  • Your ambition not worth blood of Edo people, Ize-Iyamu’s campaign tells Obaseki

Your ambition not worth blood of Edo people, Ize-Iyamu’s campaign tells Obaseki

The Campaign Council of Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, the Edo State All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship flagbearer, has told the state governor and People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Godwin Obaseki that his second term ambition is not worth the blood and life of citizens of the state.

Accusing the governor of been desperate of winning the September 19, governorship election, the APC governorship candidate campaign council, alleged that Obaseki has embarked on executing plans to prevent the people of the State from delivering a verdict on the four-year misrule of Obaseki at the polls with violence and other criminal acts of intimidation.

Addressing newsmen in Abuja on Friday, the deputy head of the media and publicity committee of the APC National Campaign Council, Hon. Patrick Obahiagbon said the governor and the PDP candidate have resorted to coercing the people of the state in desperation to get re-elected despite his rejection by the people.

He alleged that the governor and his party have engaged in illegal importation of dangerous arms and ammunition for thugs and criminals from neighboring PDP States, particularly Delta, with the sole aim of causing mayhem and disrupting the peaceful conduct of the election in most parts of Edo State.

According to Obahiagbon, “Less than one month to the Edo Governorship election, and with defeat staring Mr. Godwin Obaseki and his party of tax-collectors, the PDP, in the face, they have both abandoned their pretense at democracy and guided participation in the election, and brazenly embarked on the execution of their plans to prevent the people of Edo State from delivering a verdict on the four-year misrule of Obaseki at the polls on the 19th of September with violence and other criminal acts of intimidation.

“Let it be known by the whole world that the Governor of Edo State and his government, in continuation of their disregard for the rule of law, democratic ethics and constitutionalism, has intensified their illegal importation of dangerous arms and ammunition, as well as the daily recruitment and importation of notorious thugs and criminals from neighboring PDP States, particularly Delta, for the purpose of causing mayhem and disrupting the peaceful conduct of the election in most parts of Edo State.

“We have it on good authority that that the Edo State Government and members of its kitchen cabinet have drawn up a list of prominent APC leaders across Edo State that they gave targeted for maiming, physical assault, assassination, kidnapping and sponsored robbery attacks whilst also tinkering with the idea of using heavy duty trailers to orchestrate road accidents of APC leader, before or on the day of the September 19th Governorship elections.”

The campaign council said it was alarmed at the rapid multiplication of firearms in the state and the wanton violence and shooting that characterised the PDP campaign, causing residents to flee their homes upon hearing news of the outgoing Governor’s visit.

“We are alarmed at the rapid multiplication of these firearms and the now-too-common presence of violent groups with prolific ammunition who are on the march with the Edo state Governor as he campaigns from place to place and in the process terrorizing the people and leaving behind an unfortunate trail of sorrow, blood, and tears everywhere he goes for campaigns.

“Rather than excite, Mr. Governor’s campaign trail has now become a bad omen, a harbinger of evil, and a stage of wanton violence and shootings, causing residents to flee their homes upon hearing news of the outgoing Governor’s visit.”

The APC cited the violent incident on Wednesday, August 19th, in Igueben LGA where thugs allegedly hired and armed by the Edo State government, turned their guns on each other and shot an innocent citizen in the fracas that ensued.

“We are disappointed, disheartened, and extremely repulsed by the fact that a government that failed the youths and derided them at every turn has now gone ahead to place guns purchased with state resources that could have gone into empowerment schemes in the hands of some, urging them to wreak havoc and risk their lives, and those of others, in the process.

“We are equally aghast at the fact that a Governor that spent four years chasing away investors from Edo State with his tyranny, bad faith and targeted policies, and destruction of people’s legitimate properties on the account of their political views, has now committed state resources to the mobilization of thugs, cult groups, assassins, and other criminals into the state to carry out his murderous plans all in a bid to avoid a fate he sealed for himself with his incompetence and aloof disposition.”

The APC Campaign Council further alleged that “the outgoing Edo state Governor has become desperate and now willing to muzzle his way back to Government House but must Edo State become a carnage field of blood, tears, sorrows and deaths for the realization of his second term aspirations?

“We are not only condemning, in the strongest of terms, this daily distribution of illegal arms to mobilized thugs, we demand an investigation and arrests that will be followed by swift prosecution as a mark of seriousness on the part of the security agencies to protect the integrity of the September 19 election.

“Arms proliferation has fueled insecurity in Nigeria for years and we are convinced that by clamping down on Governor Godwin Obaseki and his agents of terror, who on a daily basis are funneling state funds to the illegal acquisition and distribution of weapons, the security agencies would be laying a marker in the sand and sending a strong signal to other perpetrators of this crime that it would no longer be business as usual.

“Nothing warrants nor justify this undemocratic inclination to violence where the exchange of ideas should reign supreme. The protection of the integrity of the Edo Governorship election from the brooding and sprawling violence of Mr. Godwin Obaseki is a collective obligation that must be shared by all well-meaning citizens and groups interested in the survival of democracy and the constitutional right and freedom of the people to determine the leadership of their state and their representatives in government.”

  • Appointing Sanwo-Olu chairman of Ondo APC campaign is asking him to finance poll with Lagos funds – PDP

Appointing Sanwo-Olu chairman of Ondo APC campaign is asking him to finance poll with Lagos funds – PDP

The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has said the decision of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to appoint Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu as the chairman of its 104-member campaign council for the Ondo State governorship election is a subtle invitation for the governor to bankroll the election for its candidate, Rotimi Akeredolu who is seeking a second term in office.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports the Governor Mai Mala Buni led Caretaker National Convention Planning Committee of the APC announced Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu as the chairman of the 104-member campaign for the Ondo poll on Tuesday.

The PDP however cautioned the governor against spending state funds for the Ondo poll.

This was contained in a press statement by the Lagos PDP’s spokesperson, Gani Taofik, titled ‘Resist wasting Lagos funds on Ondo” on Wednesday.

In the statement, the party raised an alarm that there would “most likely be a diversion of Lagos funds into the APC Ondo state governorship contest”.

It alleged that making Sanwo-Olu the Chairman of APC campaign council for the Ondo election was a way of asking him to finance the election.

The statement read, “The selection of Sanwoolu as Head of the APC Ondo State Governorship campaign council cannot be for his political experience but because the APC intends to use Lagos funds to run the Ondo elections.

“The party urge the Lagos State Commissioner for Finance and the Accountant General to prepare for accountability within this period of Edo and Ondo elections.

“We will invite EFCC and also support the legal protest against this selection targeted at diverting Lagos taxes in the face of colossal infrastructure inadequacies begging for attention in the state.

“Governor Sanwoolu should show empathy to Lagosians by rejecting the Greek gift selection as head of the APC campaign council, so as to concentrate on his much-touted quest to improve the state development.

“For the PDP, the state will be further plunged into avoidable debts and infrastructure deficits if the governor delves into such party assignments obviously distractive and prodigal at this time.”

Okonjo-Iweala raises alarm: Some influential Nigerians sabotaging my campaign for WTO job

Nigeria’s former Minister of Finance and candidate for the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Dr Ngozi Okonjo- Iweala has raised the alarm that some highly placed Nigerians are making moves to sabotage her campaign for the position.

In a statement on Friday by her Media Adviser, Mr Paul Nwabuikwu, the former minister said
these persons and their cohorts are peddling outright lies and distortions designed to invent a non-existent scandal in order to paint her and her campaign in negative light.

The statement said, “It has come to our attention that there is an ongoing effort by some well-connected Nigerians to sabotage the campaign of Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as the country’s candidate for Director-General of the World Trade Organization.

“As part of this campaign, these persons and their cohorts are peddling outright lies and distortions designed to invent a non-existent ‘scandal’ in order to paint the Candidate and her campaign in negative light.

“An example of this is the effort to misrepresent the Campaign’s relationship with Mercury Communications, one of the organizations and individuals that have done voluntary, pro bono work for the Campaign.

“Against this background, the attempt by these elements to manufacture a ‘controversy’ in the local and international media by distorting the facts and creating falsehoods to link the Campaign with some of Mercury’s current or past clients to push a false impression is contemptible.”

The minister in the statement said that it is sad that the elements behind this campaign are placing their “squalid concerns above the interests of the country.”

She added, “We urge all well-meaning Nigerians to ignore this condemnable effort.

“Dr Okonjo-Iweala is humbled that her campaign is progressing in the right direction and that her candidacy has been embraced by many Nigerians, including a growing number of spirited volunteers.”

While appreciating the strong show of support by both the Presidency and Nigerians, despite the efforts of the persons engaged in this negative exercise, Okonjo-Iweala assured that she would continue to do her best to make her candidacy count for the country.

Meanwhile, Mercury on Friday also issued a statement denying receiving the campaign contract of Okonjo-Iweala for the WTO job.

“Mercury does not and has never had a contract to represent Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala’s campaign for WTO. Her campaign team is comprised of volunteers.
A small number of Mercury employees are volunteering to help Dr Ngozi in her campaign for WTO Director General. She is not a client of our firm and the campaign has never had a contract with Mercury. An administrative error was made when the staff volunteered, leading to a precautionary LDA registration. This was cancelled because it was unnecessary,” the statement said.

  • Edo 2020: Campaigns have started officially – INEC

Edo 2020: Campaigns have started officially – INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it has lifted the ban on campaigns by political parties ahead of the Sept. 19 governorship election the state.

Mr Timidi Wariowei, the INEC Head of Voter Education in Edo, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Benin that the campaigns officially commenced on June 21.

Wariowei said: “Campaigns have officially started in the state. Campaigns starts 90 days to election and it started on June 21.”

Wariowei also disclosed that the office had taken delivery of some non-sensitive materials and distributed same to the 18 local government areas of the state.

“The reason we distributed materials early is because the office we are occupying now has a small storage capacity.

“The storage facility cannot accommodate all the materials, so as the materials come we dispatch to our local government offices.

“The non-sensitive materials we have received so far are not complete so as they come in batches we distribute because of lack of space to keep them,” he said.

According to Wariowei, the total registered voters as at 2019 is 2,210,534, while uncollected PVCs stands at 483,868.

NAN reports that INEC has cleared and displayed list of candidates of 14 registered political parties, including the All Progressives Party and Peoples Democratic Party being the major contenders, ahead of the polls.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, has said he reserves the right to contest for Senate or presidency in 2023.

Ngige made the remark while dismissing reports that he was interested in contesting for the Anambra governorship election billed for next year.

He spoke in his hometown of Alor, Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State, on Sunday.

Ngige, who was a former one term governor of the state, however, declared that he has no interest in becoming governor because he’s on a national assignment as Minister.

Biden wins more delegates in Big Tuesday, consolidates lead

By Dayo Benson Editor Politics,Law/Human Rights

Democratic Presidential primaries front runner, former Vice President Joe Biden, Tuesday night consolidated his delegates lead in the Big Tuesday primaries which featured six states, with Michigan’s 125 delegates as the biggest prize.

The former Vice President swept Michigan, Mississippi and Missouri states in early results to widen the gap between him and closest rival Senator Bernie Sanders. Biden was ahead with 96 delegates after the March 3 Super Tuesday primaries which gave him 10 out of the 14 States.

Mississippi has 68 delegates, Missouri 36, Idaho, North Dakota and Washington State were the other states involved in the primaries.

A total of 365 delegates were at stake Tuesday night.

Interestingly, Sanders won Michigan in 2016, when he ran against former Secretary Hilary Clinton.

However, Democrats lost Michigan to the Republicans in the 2016 presidential election. The state was one of the three swing states which gave President Donald Trump victory at the polls.

Speaking to supporters in Philadelphia, Biden said “For those who have been counted out, those who have been knocked out, this is your campaign, join us, we need you.”

He thanked Sanders and his supporters for their tireless energy, even as he urged them to join him in the quest to unite the Democrats and defeat Trump.

He acknowledged other candidates who have endorsed him, saying that “we are few steps away from White House.”

He promised that the United States would rejoin the Paris Climate agreement , to show the world that America could be taken for its words.

Biden had shot into early lead at the Super Tuesday Democratic Presidential primaries held in 14 states and a United States territory. Former Mayor Pete Buttigieg and Senator Amy Klobuchar’s endorsements of Biden added momentum to his campaign.

The former Vice President won Virginia which has 91 delegates, North Carolina which has 110 delegates, the third largest in the country and Texas which has 228 delegates. Alabama with 52 delegates also went to Biden as well as Oklahoma. Biden also won Tennessee, Minnesota, Arkansas, and Massachusetts. Senator Bernie Sanders won Vermont, Colorado, Utah and California.

A total of 1,344 delegates are at stake in the contest. A total of 1,991 delegates are required before a candidate can emerge as the Nominee at the Democratic National Convention. California has the largest delegates 415, followed by Texas with 228 delegates.

Sanders did not make any statement on the disappointing results and the way forward for his campaign.

  • There is a sponsored campaign against JAMB – Oloyede

Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, Registrar, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), said that he was sure of a sponsored campaign against the efforts of the board.
Oloyede said this on Thursday in Abuja while presenting another suspect to newsmen, Kokowa Cletus, a 20-year-old, who allegedly falsified his Unified Tertiary Admissions Examination (UTME) result.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the board had on June 24, presented a 19-year-old Adah Eche, who allegedly falsified his UTME result, yet wrote a letter of complaint to the board for presenting him with two results.
The registrar frowned at the fraudulent trend, saying that it was unfortunate that the board was making efforts to serve the public yet it was being discouraged by detractors.
“This is especially when cases that were meant to be investigated were not appropriately done.
“We believe that there is an organised and sponsored campaign against JAMB for whatever reason.
“We have no apology, but will want the public, who might be misinformed to always know the situation at hand and the gravity of what we do.
“This campaign going on against JAMB is done by people who knowingly or unknowingly, are inadvertently employed to do this.
“At the appropriate time, we will come out to tell the people what is really going on but there is a personal war, you will see that soon,’’ he said.
He noted that many of such campaigns were done through complaints of the board issuing out double results to candidates who sat for the 2019/20 UTME among other complains.
Oloyede said that some of the people who make the claims are aware of the Nigerian factor where most accusations were not properly investigated before undergoing public judgements.
The registrar said instead they preferred to go elsewhere to cry foul instead of approaching the board.
He said Cletus was invited to the board’s headquarters from Bayelsa, after he wrote a complaint to the board for issuing him two results and subsequently he was apprehended.
“He came with his uncle who fortunately, is an army officer and we investigated the matter together before the members of the board.
“He presented two results; one was 206 and the other was 162.
“We found details of transactions on his phone between him and the syndicate, including a video on how to process result upgrade and negotiations were made on the phone too.
“There was also a screenshot of an imposition result of 206, yet, he had the guts to claim that JAMB sent him two results while we also discovered that he checked the results 15 times via `55109’, Oloyede added.
The registrar explained that the suspect did not know that once a result has been checked, a copy was being sent to the candidate, another was copied back to the board with the date and time of check.
He also narrated how the father of the suspect had written a letter to the board, expressing disappointment at the board’s incompetence.
Oloyede quoted the letter as saying, “your inability in swift response to address the issue has led to my son’s forfeiture of his Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) admission opportunity.
“However, am craving your indulgence to quickly rectify the result in affirmative to enable him have a good chance for the second choice of the institution.’’
The registrar said that the board would stop at nothing to expose the syndicates working against it, noting that about 80 of such cases were already being prosecuted nationwide.
He assured that others would be apprehended in no time, adding that the board would have to focus on admissions process for now.
According to him, the suspect’s result will not be cancelled but be invalidated, while he will be handed over to the police to face the law.
The suspect told newsmen that his parents would be disappointed at his actions.
He said that he did not believe his original result was a reflection of his performance and so, decided to approach the board for a proof.
This, he explained, was because he thought he did better than 162 as the UTME questions he answered were not so difficult believing that the second result is not his.
“Someone sent an mail to me saying that they can upgrade my result, so I asked them to send me a proof that they could do it and they sent me 206.
“The person now asked me to pay N10,000 but I told him I didn’t have that kind of money, he then promised to make things hard for me.
“When I checked later via `55109’, I got 162, then I decided to complain to JAMB to know if my scores were actually changed or not,’’ he said.
Cletus said that he knew upgrading scores was a criminal offence and did not expect the syndicate to be successful, yet he believed that it was JAMB that sent the 206 result to him and wanted to be sure.

  • Days after admitting receiving kickbacks from Buhari’s campaign, Charly Boy retracts self

The convener of “OurMumuDonDo” Movement, Charles Oputa, popularly referred to Charly Boy, has contradicted his earlier statement that he received millions of naira from President Muhammadu Buhari’s campaign team.

Charly Boy in an interview with Oak TV on Tuesday said he could not have used the song where he abused the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to get money from Festus Keyamo (SAN) spokesman of President Buhari’s campaign.

Oputa was accused by the co-convener of the movement, Deji Adeyanju, that while he was in prison for 78 days, the APC through Keyamo gave Charly Boy money.

An audio conversation was released to back Adeyanju’s claim.

Days after the allegation, Charly Boy publicly stated that he received at least N100 million from Buhari campaign as payment for his politically-charged music video that attacked PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar and the APC.

The video was uploaded on YouTube January 25.

However, hours after Charly Boy admitted that he got cash from Buhari’s campaign, Keyamo wrote on Twitter that “I’ve been having some good laugh. Whoever thinks that I would pay a penny for a song by @Areafada1 that disses both the APC and PDP must have his/her head examined.”

If the quarrelling parties want to hurt their egos by bandying phantom figures, they should let me out of it.”

However things took a different twist on Tuesday, when Charly Boy said in an interview that: “For someone to believe that I collected money in nine digits from a politician for a video clip is laughable, because even if I am Davido or Wizkid, who will pay me such amount.

Some persons are bent on denting the brand that I have built over the years, but I am not deterred because the struggle for a better Nigeria must continue, and my mouth cannot be shut.”

Charly Boy said he admitted to collecting the money earlier “to play along and understand if Adeyanju, the person who he called son will believe the rumours”.

Excess campaign spending: Court fixes date for judgement on Buhari, Atiku’s disqualification

The Federal High Court, Abuja, has adjourned until May 7, a suit seeking the disqualification of President Muhammadu Buhari and the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar from the presidential election over alleged excess spending on campaigns.

The presidential candidate of the National Rescue Movement, Mr Usman Ibrahim-Alhaji dragged the duo to court alleging that they both spent over N1 billion each on campaign expenses in the presidential elections.

Ibrahim-Alhaji prayed the court to invoke Section 91(2) of the Electoral Act, 2010 to nullify the participation of Buhari and Atiku in the February 23 presidential election for allegedly violating the Electoral Act 2010.

The plaintiff through his counsel, Mr Ezekiel Ofou alleged that by spending over N1 billion each, Buhari and Atiku had violated the electoral law and were liable to be removed as contestants in the election.

At the resumed hearing on Tuesday, Ofou informed the court that he had served the processes on Buhari and Atiku through substituted means as was ordered by the court on March 5.

He, however, acknowledged that even though they were yet to respond, according to the law, they had up till 30 days within which to respond.

  • 2019 Elections: Irate youths boo Buhari, stone Oshiomhole at Ogun APC presidential rally

    By Gabriel Okoro

All does not seem to be well with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) even as the 2019 general elections is less than a week away.

This became obvious during President Muhammadu Buhari’s rally on Monday in Abeokuta, Ogun State. The rally broadcast live by the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) showed some stoning and booing the president while he addresses the crowd.

President Buhari while addressing the crowd adviced them to vote in their rightful candidate in the 2019 gubernatorial election.

Shortly after his advice, the president shouted APC. However, this does seemed to go well with the crowd as they resorted to throwing object at the president.

The party chairman, Adams Oshiomhole was also not spared when he was invited to the podium for his speech. As he began to speak, persons suspected to be hoodlums started throwing stones at him and one of the stones flew in the direction where the President was sitting.

Men of the State Services hurriedly protected him and other dignitaries while the national anthem was on to round off the campaign for the day.

Recall that the Ogun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has been divided following the break up of a serving lawmaker representing Egbado South and Ipokia federal constituency of Ogun State, Mr.Adekunle Akinlade from the party to the Alliance Peoples Movement APM after he was denied the Governorship ticket.

The APM has been gathering support for president Muhammadu Buhari in the upcoming presidential election but refused to align with the APC in Ogun state.
