  • CAN condemns killings of Catholic, Baptist clerics in Abuja, Kaduna

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) on Wednesday condoled with the leaderships of the Roman Catholic Church and the Nigerian Baptist Convention over the demise of the two clerics.

The President, Rev Samson Ayokunle in a statement signed by Pastor Adebayo Oladeji, Special Assistant, Media and Communications to the CAN president, in Abuja condemned their killings.

Ayokunle said the clerics were killed by some unknown gunmen in Abuja and Kaduna State.

He added that the late Rev. Fr. Michael Akawu, was reportedly shot dead by identified gunmen in Gwagwalada, Abuja, while shopping on Aug. 18.

“Few hours later, on Sunday, August 19, at about 1.00 a.m, according to informed sources, some hoodlums suspected to be Fulani terrorists attacked Nasara Baptist Church in Guguwa near Rigasa in Kaduna.

“The suspected terrorists shot dead Rev. Hosea Akuchi and took away his wife, Mrs Talatu Akuchi.

“Her whereabouts remain unknown and the criminals have demanded for the sum of five million naira for her release,” he said.

Ayokunle said that Akawu, was ordained as priest on Feb. 4, 2017 by the Archbishop of Abuja, the Most Revd. John Cardinal Onayeikan and was the first FCT indigenous Catholic priest to be ordained.

The CAN president prayed to God to comfort and console the Roman Catholic Church in Nigeria and the Nigerian Baptist Convention, the churches where they were serving with their immediate families.

He, however, called on the Nigeria Police and other relevant security agencies to do whatever it takes to bring the culprits to book and rescue the widow of the late Rev. Akuchi as soon as practicable.

“We once again call on our security agencies to be more proactive and invest more on intelligence gathering with a view to preventing many of these crimes that are being committed before their watches undetected,” he stressed.

The cleric noted with pains and disappointment the state of insecurity across the country, adding that the Federal Government should work hard to improve security in the country.

According to him, nowhere is safe and secured, as terrorists, rampaging Fulani herdsmen, killer bandits, armed robbers, kidnappers and other hoodlums were operating unchecked.

He said that the security agencies seemed busy with elections and forgot that leaders were elected to rule over the living souls.

“Nigeria’s security situation is reprehensible, unacceptable and condemnable. We once again call on President Muhammadu Buhari to work on the security system of the country.

“Let there be a visible improvement in our security system, as the governed are not satisfied with their performances in ensuring security of lives and property.

The CAN president again called on the Police to arrest all assailants that were responsible for these evil acts.

“Enough of the senseless killings, these killings must stop in the country,’’ he warned.

  • 2019: CAN declares nationwide three-day prayer programme

The leadership of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) on Tuesday declared a three-day prayer to be observed in all churches.

This followed the political drama unfolding in the country.

The development, CAN said, was becoming embarrassing and constituting threat to democracy.

A statement by the Special Assistant (Media & Communications) to the CAN President, Pastor Adebayo Oladeji: said: “The prayer is for divine protection for our nation and democracy.

“We request all bloc chairmen, zonal chairmen, state chairmen, local and all church leaders to mobilise our members nationwide for a three-day prayer from August 27 to 29 to seek the face of God concerning the social and political state of our nation and for peaceful conduct of 2019 elections.

“We are to pray that God should frustrate the efforts of evil men among our politicians and to prevent them from being elected into any office in 2019.

“We should pray for peaceful co-existence and an end to bloodshed and violence caused by suspected herdsmen, bandits, ritual killers, robbers and other hoodlums.

“We should pray that God should guide our leaders aright. We should pray for the release of Leah Sharibu and the remaining Chibok girls, together with those in the captivity of insurgents throughout the nation. We should pray for economic prosperity of the nation.

“We should pray for unity and mutual respect for one another.”

  • Lagos denies plans to place religious leaders on salary

The Lagos State Government on Tuesday debunked viral report on the social media suggesting that it was planning to commence paying salary to religious leaders in the State, saying the claim was totally untrue and misleading.

Commissioner for Home Affairs, Mr. Abdulateef Abdulhakeem who made the clarification while speaking on a television programme monitored in Lagos, said there was no iota of truth in the said report, and urged members of the public to disregard it in its entirety.

He said: “The clear position is that the Lagos State Government is not intending to employ Imams and Pastors. There is no such plan and there is no willingness on our part to delve into a private realm.

“What exists in Lagos State is that there is a symbiotic relationship between the Lagos State Government and faith-based organizations and it is a mutually beneficial relationship which has contributed to the growth and development of the State,” Abdulhakeem said.

In the said report, Abdulhakeem was quoted as saying that the State Government would soon place religious leaders on the State salary structure to encourage them to use their Pulpit and the Minbar to re-orientate citizenry to shun corruption and immorality.

Clarifying his statement, the Commissioner said: “I must have been misunderstood or misquoted. We were at a forum where we were trying to encourage religious leaders to be advocates against corruption because religious leaders have millions of adherents and they enjoy the allegiance of millions of followers and we expect them to use the Pulpit and the Minbar to advocate for good governance and selflessness so that they can influence their members positively.

“In Lagos State, one of the remarkable successes of the present administration is that we have cutting-edge approaches to relating with religious leaders and that is why Lagos remains the most peaceful and most religious crisis-free State in the federation inspite of our cosmopolitan nature.”

Already, the Commissioner said a structured approach had been put in place to relate with religious leaders in the State through the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) which consists of people nominated by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and the Muslim Community across the 57 Local Councils in the State.

According to him, “We have them at the State level; they meet regularly in the Home Affairs and instead of leaving them as dysfunctional silos, we ensure that there is an integrated approach.

“They meet regularly to interact on religious issues and the Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode has even further decentralized that whereby over 700 of them were appointed based on their nominations and they are volunteers who are not paid anything. They come together to nip religious crisis at the bud,” he said.

He added that the general approach of the State Government to religion was that of rule of law, good governance, constitutional democracy and more than anything, the observance and preservation of the fundamental human rights of Lagosians to freely practice their religion.

“Section 38 of the Constitution is very clear and explicit that every person is entitled to freedom of thought, conscience and religion including the freedom to change your religion and the freedom to either alone or in community with others practice, manifest and propagate your religion. Clearly, that is unequivocally telling you that religion is a private affair as far as the Lagos State Government is concerned,” Abdulhakeem said.

Responding to a question on why the State Government was yet to implement a Court of Appeal judgment on the use of Hijab by school girls, Abdulhakeem said being a government which firmly believes in rule of law, the State Government was awaiting the pronouncement of the Supreme Court on the matter which, he said, was already before the apex court.

On taxes, the Commissioner said though religious institutions were exempted according to the State laws, but any religious body which engages in commercial activities was liable to pay tax.

“Religious institutions are not taxable under the Lagos laws but where religious institutions engage in business transactions like schools and so on, then such are liable to pay taxes but as far as the institution is concerned, it is exempted from paying tax.

“Also, those who convert their buildings into Mosque to avoid paying taxes, we have made it abundantly clear that you are not allowed to convert residential premises into religious centres. So, people should just respect God the way the Lagos State Government has respected God and do not come under that arena to avoid payment of taxes,” he said.

Besides, the Commissioner said the State Government had already embarked on massive enlightenment and re-orientation against noise pollution by religious leaders, but any resident who is affected by such should however report either through the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) or the Ministry of Home Affairs for action.

  • Killings: CAN cancels nationwide protest

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), has postponed until further notice its planned public protest slated for July 11, 2018.

It said it did so due to some circumstances beyond its control.

CAN President, Rev. Samson Ayokunle made the announcement in a statement signed by Pastor Adebayo Oladeji , his Special Assistant, Media and Communication.

However, Ayokunle said the three-day prayer and fasting would hold as scheduled from July 9 to 11, 2018 in all churches and state chapters of CAN.

He disclosed that the church and denominational leaders would come to the National Christian Centre together with the National Executive Committee (NEC), of CAN on the July 11 at 10am to pray to God for the nation.

Recall that the leadership of CAN had declared July 9 to 11 as National Day of prayers and fasting programme against the killings across the country.

The association also called on all Nigerians, both within and outside the country to take part in the programme.

The association said the decision was hinged on the willful and persistent killings of fellow citizens in general and Christians in particular, mostly in Plateau and Benue states where mass burial has become the norm.

CAN is worried, disturbed and disappointed that despite all the clarion calls on President Muhammadu Buhari to re-organise his security team by replacing all the security chiefs, he has consistently not responded to such calls,” the association said.

  • Killings: Again, CAN plans protest across Nigeria

Killings: Again, CAN plans protest across Nigeria

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) says it is organising a three-day prayer and fasting to seek God’s intervention for an end to the growing rate of killings across the country.

In a statement from the media assistant to the CAN President, Adebayo Oladeji, the association said it will also embark on a peaceful protest across the country on July 11 to register its dissatisfaction with the spate of killings.

“The leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has declared July 9-11, 2018 as national days of prayers and fasting against unwarranted killings in the land and calls on all well-meaning Nigerians, both within and outside the country, to join Christians on 11 July, 2018 for a peaceful protest against the killings.

“CAN’s decision is hinged on wilful and persistent killings of fellow citizens in general and Christians in particular nationwide and mostly in Plateau and Benue where mass burial has become the norm without any positive response from the country’s security agencies.”

The statement also expressed what the association’s disappointment over the failure of President Muhammadu Buhari to restructure the leadership of Nigeria’s security sector.

“CAN is worried, disturbed and disappointed that despite all the clarion calls on President Muhammadu Buhari to re-organise his security team by replacing all the security chiefs, he has consistently turned a deaf ear to such calls. From all indications, the President seems to be satisfied with their poor performance and the attendant problems that have led to avoidable loss of lives and property.

“We call on all Christians in the country and in the Diaspora to participate in the three-day prayers and fasting programme for God to end all the senseless, unwarranted, and selected killings in the country. If the government has failed us, we are very sure that Our God will never fail.

“All National Executive Committee’s members of CAN, the Church and Denominational leaders have been invited to participate in a peaceful protest march to both the National Assembly and the State House to impress on the government to see the need to effectively stop the unprecedented killings.

“CAN has also directed its leadership at the state and local government levels to organise the same Peaceful Protest March to the Government House and the Local government headquarters respectively on 11 July. We are to tell the government; enough is enough. We appeal to our members to be law-abiding before, during and after the protest.”

  • Buhari’s aide lambasts CAN, demeans Nigerian journalists

Buhari’s aide lambasts CAN, demeans Nigerian journalists

Social Media Aide to President Muhammadu Buhari, Lauretta Onochie, on Monday referred to the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) as Cankerworm Association of Nigeria.

She alludes that the association that embodies the totality of Christians in Nigeria is not in talking terms with their God.

    Read full statement:

This piece has nothing to do with the millions of Christians in Nigeria who Love the Lord with their whole hearts and their neighbours as themselves, as commanded by our Lord, Jesus Christ.

On June 16, 2018, lost in the euphoria of Nigeria versus Croatia match at the on-going FIFA World cup tournament in faraway Russia was the cheering news that the Nigeria Police had nabbed the five suspected killers of two Rev Fathers in Benue.

Their names were given as follows: Manga Husseini, David Akenawe, Agada Tsesaa, Tarza Orvanya and Ngyohov Shin.

The mostly sleeping Nigerian media, for reason explained to the nation by one of our veteran journalists, did not consider it “Breaking News”. They did not even do their usual “Cut and paste”.

This is a bid to demarket President Muhammadu Buhari, a man elected to salvage a nation that it’s ruination was backed by unrighteous men parading themselves as Christians. The CAN of worms that reap from the bloody trade that is going on in our nation, did not deem it fit to pat the security operatives on the back.

Why would they? The Cankerworm Association of Nigeria, previously known as “Christian” Association of Nigeria, had achieved its aim, using the blood of two innocent Catholic Priests, to bring back the Catholic Church to their unrighteous fold. The lives of those two innocent Priests, were pawns in the desperate game by certain evil former Landlords of our nation, who are in bed with the demonic Cankerworms and purveyor of hate messages and fake news.

It was in the hey days of the Jonathan administration. Sin was in vogue. Corruption was the currency of trade for the association of partakers of stolen funds otherwise and regretably known as Christian Association of Nigeria. It was very fashionable to commit atrocities and be honoured with a front seat in church and a title.

But the Catholic Church in Nigeria would have none of it. The Catholic Bishops decided to quit the unholy organisation CAN, as there was no more christianty in the Christian Association of Nigeria. They cited poor leadership and POLITICISATION of the association.

The Catholics further went on to add that some attitudes, utterances and actions of the national leadership of CAN which in their opinion negate the concept of the foundation of the association and the desire of Our Lord Jesus Christ, made it imposible for them to continue in the same organisation as unrighteous people.

And then, as if in answered prayer for the Catholics, Nigerians rallied round Muhammadu Buhari, a man of honour and integrity, sacking the government that fed the greed of the CAN of worms who constantly received stolen funds meant to make the lives of Nigerians better and easier.

This made the Tape worms very unhappy. Tgey began to plot to bring vack the Catholic Church to their fold. Their silence was deafening when IPOB tried to destabilise the country. So when IPOB suddenly dumped Christianity for Judaism, watchers alleged that the Worms had not been able to meet their financial obligations to IPOB.

I am a bible Student and EVERYTHING I do, is guided by my belief in ONE God as supported by the Christian Holy book, the Bible. Any Association that attaches “Christian” to its name, must be built on what Jesus Christ taught us. But the criminal merchants are in bed with criminal elements in our today’s opposition, as they were with the Looting government of PDP that ran our nation aground under you know who. They have now managed to drag the Catholic Church into their pig sty to wallow in their mud. But it won’t last because the Catholics would see through the unrighteous smokescreen and flee from CAN. Again.

I have not seen where Jesus preached hatred the way the Nigerian worms do. He taught us to LOVE even those that do not love us. Preaching hate in their coven is a direct insult and disobedience to the teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ.

But such criminals, existed in His days and Jesus did not mince words in labelling them appropriately. He called them BROOD OF VIPERS. He also called them WHITE-WASHED GRAVEYARDS harbouring dead men’s bones. What is the difference between then and now? Oh I know. The Temple keepers of those days, trekked or rode on donkeys. Today, it’s Private jets bought with funds stolen from Government coffers and donated in form of Tithes and offerings to the Worms. Abomination unto the Lord!

He also chased them from the temple saying they had turned His Father’s house into a den of THIEVES and TRADERS. It’s very true today. The report was made of a woman who retired from the Civil Service and a Tithe of N60m was received from her. Stolen funds. We got our money back. Many of them are now finding it difficult to maintain their high profile life styles since President Buhari turned off the taps.

I think I was being diplomatic by calling them CAN of worms. We need to define what sort of worms They are. They are CAN of Tapeworms. Parasites! Sucking for free, the blood of their ignorant followers in addition to scamming corrupt political leaders.

With all the stolen resources available to them, they can afford to find out the truth. But their aim is not to find the truth. Evidence abound that Aides of the political friends of the Tapeworms are the ones on a killing spree, in the name of herdsmen and some of them are already in custody. They have conveniently looked away when the police, in response to the petition of the Benue state Governor, invited his predecessor for questioning. They have said nothing regarding the arrest by the Police of the killers of the two Catholic Priests in Benue State.

EVERY LIFE MATTERS. So what sort of a Christian would be silent when over 1000 Fulanis were massacred but amplifies the killing of 70 people massacred in Benue? Thankfully, we have many Christian preachers, real Christians, across the nation who do not preach the same hate sermons churned out by the “Christian” Association of Nigeria.

Profiles of those arrested show that they are MOSTLY from the warring ethnic groups. So why are the Tapeworms speading lies and instigating hate across the nation? The answer is not farfetched. They want to have another access to federal government funds, meant for the development of our nation thereby shortchanging the people of Nigeria. So they reckon that demarketing the anti corruption champion of Africa, Pres. Muhammadu Okechukwu Buhari, will again, throw the National treasury at their feet.

We have had governments in this nation – the good, the bad and the ugly. At no time have we had one that shamelessly peddled religion as a weapon of governance as the government under Pres. Jonathan. We had never seen one that had openly pitched its peace-loving citizens against each other on religious basis using the now frustrated CAN of Tapeworms. It is being alleged openly that many members of the leadership of Christian Association of Nigeria CAN, are some of the most corrupt and rotten leaders in Nigeria. That’s to the credit of the Dr. Goodluck Jonathan’s administration that elevated them above the law and stuffed their mouths full of stolen funds. Have we forgotten a private jet, $15m and South Africa? No we haven’t.

These worms, Tapeworms, need to borrow a leaf from many Christian preachers of righteousness across the nation. These are men and women of goodwill, ordained in righteousness and are preachers of nothing but peace, love and understanding. Now let me educate the rest who have been belligerent towards others in our nation who worshìp OUR God in a different way.

It is God who chooses what family everyone is born into. Consequently, and by implication, He chooses the religion we all inherit. He wanted me to be a Christian so He caused me to be born into a Christian family. He wanted Gov. Nasir Elrufai to be a Muslim, so he was born into a Muslim family. We both relate as brother and sister. So do most Christians and Muslims across the nation. Religion nor ethnicity does not come into play because we are children of the same God and citizens of the same nation, NIGERIA.

The attitude of many pretenders to Christianity is de-marketing Christianity to the point that Islam is now the fastest growing religion on earth. (Ntor! Ask Google). This is in spite of the fact that ISIS and Boko Haram, are doing to Islam what CAN is doing to Christianity.

It was perfectly fine for a so called Christian President to attend Organisation Of Islamic Conference (OIC), and bring it’s benefits to Nigeria. (I suspect they may have looted those benefits). But totally an Islamisation agenda of the Buhari Administration for Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi to take advantage of the SUKUK interest -free loans for the development of his native Enugu State.

In Germany, there’s a Christian political party. This morbid hatred for a righteous man, is enough to propel these religious merchants and bigots to register a political Party. Religious and tribal bigotry are not going to hand them political power. It’s not going to give them what they crave, which is, unfettered access to our national treasury for the purpose of looting.

Until they become a registered political party, until they cease to be demonic and irresponsible in their utterances, until they repent and become Christians, their words are nothing but noise and hate speech. Until then, they do not represent Christians nor speak for us. Until then, they are a brood of vipers and a CAN of Tapeworms.

    God bless Nigeria.

    Lauretta Onochie.

  • Musa Asake’s family rejects CAN’s participation, assistance in late Gen Sec’s burial

Musa Asake’s family rejects CAN’s participation, assistance in late Gen Sec’s burial

The family of the late General Secretary of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Dr. Musa Asake, has written to the Christian body rejecting its offer to assist with the burial of the clergy.

The rejection came barely a day after CAN had set up a burial committee chaired by Rev. Stephen Adegbite “to organise a befitting farewell” for its late General Secretary.

Although it was not immediately clear if he had returned to Nigeria, the President of CAN, Dr. Samson Ayokunle, was said to have travelled to Philadelphia, United States of America, few hours after the death of Asake was made public.

A source in CAN stated that few hours after the death of Asake, some senior officers of CAN reportedly asked his Personal Assistant to surrender the keys to his (Asake’s) office.

Since his death, speculations had been rife that a serious succession dispute was imminent.

The family of Asake conveyed their feelings in a terse letter dated May 23 2018, and signed by the first son of the deceased, Aminchi Musa Asake.

The letter addressed to the Assistant General Secretary of CAN, Joseph Bade Daramola, was obtained on Saturday.

He said, “I received your letter dated May 22, 2018. I want to thank the Christian Association of Nigeria for reaching out to my family and wanting to commiserate with us on the passing on of my father. You have been so generous as to offer us assistance with the planning of his burial, even planning a service of songs and a commendation service. But at this point, I must ask CAN to stop, we do not need your assistance.

The family has taken an independent decision that we will be solely responsible for the burial of our father, late Rev. Dr. Musa Asake. We have already set up an independent committee and will proceed accordingly with our plans. Thank you.”

When contacted, the Special Assistant to the President of CAN, (Media and Communications), Adebayo Oladeji, directed our correspondent to Daramola, saying he had not seen the letter.

Efforts to get Daramola for response had been unsuccessful.

Asake, according to the committee set up by his family, will be buried on Friday June 8 2018.

He died in Abuja on Friday, May 11 2018 at the aged 66.

  • Dapchi: Leah Sharibu must not die in Boko Haram’s custody, CAN warns FG

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) on Friday said the President Muhammadu Buhari led federal government must step up efforts to secure the release of the lone Christian girl, Leah Sharibu in Boko Haram’s custody.

The religious body warned that there may be religious war in Nigeria should Leah die in the terrorist’s captivity.

The Special Assistant (Media and Communications) to CAN President, Adebayo Oladeji, who spoke in an interview with The Punch said CAN would not stop to agitate for the release of the schoolgirl, adding that her death could spell doom for the country as she was being detained because of her religious inclination.

Oladeji said, “Recently, CAN called out its members to demand for her release. We have addressed a press conference calling for her release. At every opportunity any church leader has to speak to the public, they demand her release.

We are doing a lot of things we cannot be disclosing to the public. Our concern includes the silence of the media and the civil society organisations thinking Leah Sharibu is a CAN affair. How many editorials have been written about her plight?

He added, “CAN will not cease the agitation for the release of all the abductees, including Leah Sharibu. Let all and sundry rise up against the failure of the security agencies and ask President Muhammadu Buhari to wake up from his slumber before the terrorists and herdsmen finish the country.

Leah Sharibu must not die. Her death, God forbids, can spell doom for Nigeria. It can give an open invitation to religious war because Leah is being detained purely because of her religion.”

Similarly, the Pentecostal Christian Association, which is the umbrella body that coordinates the activities of pentecostal, evangelical and charismatic ministries, churches and associations, described the country’s peace as hinged on Sharibu’s safety. Its National Publicity Secretary, Bishop Emmah Isong, said, “We can tell you that the peace of this country hangs on the Federal Government’s promise to secure the release of Leah Sharibu. She has become an ambassador of Christianity to the Republic of Boko Haram and we are demanding that she returns home safely to her parents.

All Nigerian youths are waiting to see what the Federal Government will do. Our constitution, which requires the government to be a protector of lives and property, will be called to question if Leah is not released. We do hope that with our prayers and the concern of all Nigerians, including Christians and Muslims, Leah would be released very soon by the grace of God.

Recall that Sharibu was among the 111 girls abducted by Boko Haram on February 19 in Dapchi, Yobe State. The insurgents had since returned 105 of the girls, but refused to release Leah on the ground that she refused to renounce her Christian faith, while five of the girls were said to have died.

The Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, had on Wednesday said efforts were on to ensure the release of Sharibu, noting that she would not be abandoned by the Federal Government.

APC finally issues membership card to Adeosun

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has officially issued Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun her party member card.

TheNewsGuru reports Adeosun picked up the membership card of the APC on Saturday at the party’s secretariat in Abeokuta, Ogun State where she partook in the ward congress.

“I was pleased by the turnout and conduct of yesterday’s Ward Congress. Every now and then we have to take time out from Abuja to visit our wards and get involved in what’s going on at the grassroots,” she said.

Explaining why she is just receiving her membership card, Adeosun said: “I’ve been a committed member of the APC since inception; so picking my membership card yesterday was a mere formality, for those who might be wondering.

“Before then I was a member of the ACN; which I joined when I was appointed Commissioner for Finance in Ogun State in 2011”.

Meanwhile, the finance minister had earlier said “There’s no doubt that the APC Administration of President Muhammadu Buhari has the best interests of Nigeria at heart.

“We’re working really hard to turn things around. The signs are there that Nigeria is going to make it, we just have to continue working hard,” she stated.
