2023 FIFA Women’s WC: Oshoala, Ordega rue misses as Super Falcons play goalless with Canada

Nigeria’s Super Falcons early this morning drew goalless with current Olympic champions Canada to open group play at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The world’s all-time leading international scorer Christine Sinclair failed to convert a penalty for Canada in the encounter as both teams settled for a point each.

The referee pointed to the spot after Sinclair was clipped in the Nigerian box on a dribbling move early in the second half. With regular penalty taker Jessie Fleming on the bench carrying an injury, Sinclair stepped up herself and watched Nigerian goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie make the sure-handed stop.

Ranked number 7 in the world, the Canadians were the favorites against No. 40-Nigeria, but they couldn’t get many clear looks during the match as the Nigerians defended stoutly, often with last-ditch emergency defending that proved effective. The penalty could have been the turning point for Canada.

Nigeria enjoyed several positive spells in the game and caused the Canadians more than a few headaches. Canada defenders made key plays and ‘keeper Kailen Sheridan came up with a couple of stops of her own to keep the Super Falcons at bay.

Francesca Ordega and Asisat Oshoala had few chances to put the game to bed but they weren’t converted.

However, in the other group B encounter co-hosts Australia defeated Republic of Ireland by a lone goal to go top of the group.

Super Falcons will face Australia on Tuesday for the second group B encounter.

  • Canada announces new immigration measures to strengthen family reunification

Canada announces new immigration measures to strengthen family reunification

The Canadian government has  announced a new measure to speed up the approval of family reunification applications, after the UK government banned students from Nigeria and other foreign countries on study visas from bringing their families into the country.

Announcing the development, Canadian immigration minister, Sean Fraser explained that the new measures were put in place to strengthen family reunification in Canada.

The Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, joined by the Honourable Hedy Fry, Member of Parliament for Vancouver Centre, said  the new measures is  to strengthen family reunification, including faster temporary resident visa (TRV) processing times for spousal applicants new and dedicated processing tools for spousal TRV applicants.

He also  announced faster temporary resident visa (TRV) processing and more considerate application measures so that families can be together sooner while they wait for their permanent residence to be finalized. Going forward, most of these applications will be processed within 30 days, and applicants will benefit from processing measures specific to their circumstances as spouses and dependants. Many applications have already been processed using these new tools. Within this cohort of applicants, we have seen an approval rate of 93%.

Once in Canada, newcomers often seek jobs to support themselves and their families. That is why Canada has also made open work permits available for spousal applicants and their dependent children who reside with their sponsor in Canada and have temporary resident status. Spouses, partners and dependants are now able to apply for and receive an open work permit as soon as they submit a complete permanent residence application under the spouse or common-law partner in Canada class (SPCLC) or other family class programs.

Fraser further announced that spousal applicants, along with other open work permit holders, whose open work permits expire between August 1 and the end of 2023, will be able to extend their work permits for an additional 18 months. A similar option was recently offered to many with expiring post-graduation work permits.

“Family reunification through immigration is not only a matter of compassion; it is a fundamental pillar of Canadian society. Today’s announcement is a mandate commitment to help build inclusive and resilient communities. We are supporting Canadians and newcomers by reuniting families faster, and also allowing them to work and support themselves more quickly once they’re here. By doing so, Canada is helping newcomers achieve their true potential, while also strengthening Canada’s economy and social fabric.”

The Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship stressed that: “Family reunification lies at the heart of building vibrant and inclusive communities. In Vancouver, we know that when families are united, they become stable, put down roots and begin to build a future. Our city thrives. This unwavering commitment to bringing loved ones together fuels our collective spirit and enriches the tapestry of our diverse neighbourhoods.

“Today’s emphasis on family reunification amplifies Vancouver’s strength, resilience, and compassion as we create a city where every individual feels a sense of belonging, and every family can flourish.”

Recall that the British government banned foreign students including Nigerians from bringing family members to the country as a part of the new plan to cut immigration numbers.

Guber Polls: DJ Switch laments inhumane treatment meted out to Igbos

Canada based Nigerian  disc jockey, Obianuju Catherine Udeh, professionally known as DJ Switch, has expressed disastisfaction   over the treatment meted out to Igbo in Lagos State.

The Igbo suffered open rejection in Lagos State and were publicly stopped from casting their votes in the presence of security agencies.

The singer is  surprised that the Igbos were subjected to inhumane treatment during the Guber polls in the just concluded elections in Lagos state.

The 2023 Lagos State gubernatorial election was marred by a high level of violence and intimidation.

Some of the attacks on voters and electoral materials were carried out right in front of the security personnel.

Before and during the polls thugs were used to threaten, create fears and force residents to either vote for a particular political party or not to bother casting their votes at all.

Video clips of police officers being compromised are flying around on social media. The police had even described as a mere joke, the threat issued to non-indigenes of Lagos by the State’s Parks Management Committee Chairman, Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo.

“I am really sorry to my Igbo brothers and sisters!” The Enugu-born DJ said.

“Truly. You are not the only tribe in the SW but how you’ve all been demonized is so heartbreaking

“APC is a shame Nigeria police shame, Nigeria is a shame. Shame… shame!

Stand strong everyone… stand strong,” she wrote.

  • FIFA confirms U.S., Mexico, Canada automatically in 2026 World Cup

FIFA confirms U.S., Mexico, Canada automatically in 2026 World Cup

The men’s national football team of the U.S., along with those of Mexico and Canada, will automatically qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals.

The three countries won the right to host the World Cup in a united North American bid.

FIFA historically has given host nations the right to play in the World Cup without going through the usual qualification tournaments.

But this is the first time FIFA had to set aside three host bids, with the tournament billed to expand from 32 teams to 48 in 2026.

Another three berths will now be awarded to CONCACAF nations via qualifying.

FIFA released a statement on Tuesday saying: “In addition, the FIFA Council confirmed that, in line with the long-standing tradition of having all hosts competing at the FIFA World Cup, as well as sporting and operational considerations, the hosts of the FIFA World Cup 2026, namely Canada, Mexico and the USA, will qualify automatically for the final round of the competition.

“Their slots will therefore be deducted from the overall allocation of six assigned to CONCACAF.”

While the U.S. and Mexico tend to qualify for most World Cups, it was good news for Canada.

Their men’s national team broke a 36-year drought between World Cup appearances when it qualified for Qatar in 2022.

Canada however lost all three of its group-stage matches.

The FIFA Council also determined its time-table for bidding for the right to host the 2030 World Cup, saying it will make its decision next year.

That meeting will be separate from FIFA’s meeting to select a host for the 2027 Women’s World Cup, which will be held first, earlier in 2024.

There are three confirmed bids for 2030 hosting duties.

These are a South American joint bid featuring Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay and Chile; a Spain-Portugal joint bid that added war-torn Ukraine last year; and a lone-country bid from Morocco.

APC set to counter falsehood against Tinubu

The All Progressives Congress (APC), Canada Chapter, has declared its readiness to counter false claims directed at the party and its presidential candidate, Sen. Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The party revealed this in a statement by the chapter’s Chairman, Mr Omololu Apata, on Tuesday in Akure.

Omololu explained that, apart from contributing financially and materially to the party, the APC, Canada chapter, would confront issues of maligning the character of APC’s presidential candidate.

“There’s so much at stake in the forthcoming elections. It is not surprising therefore that in desperation, some people have turned social media to the harbinger of slander and blackmail.

“A committee will be set up to counter any lies or misinformation toward our principal candidate with facts that will invalidate their tissue of lies,” he said.

He said that the party would harness roles that technology would play in ensuring victory for the APC candidate.

“We know our candidate is very keen on the use of technology as a vehicle for economic and social transformation of society.

“We are very hopeful that he will be able to join us for this very important presentation,” he stated.

Omololu lauded the party’s members in Canada for their dedication and steadfastness over the years.

According to him, it is time to come together to support the party and its presidential candidate who has what it takes to take Nigeria to where it truly belongs in the comity of nations.

“Luckily, our chapter can boast of diverse but dedicated members who are also very resourceful.

“After the 2023 elections and with our principal as the president, APC Canada hopes to play a significant role in deepening the existing bilateral relationship between Nigeria and Canada.

“Canada is a world powerhouse economically. It is a country to which nature has been so kind and generous.

“Canadians have also utilised those natural resources to an enviable global success,” he stated.

Omololu said that there were a lot that both countries could  share in critical economic areas such as agriculture, extractive resources, engineering and technology.
