JAMB respond to reports of candidates posted outside chosen examination towns

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has cautioned the public against spreading the falsehood that it assigns candidates to examination centres outside their  chosen towns.

This was contained in a statement issued to journalists in Abuja on Saturday by the Board’s Spokesperson, Dr Fabian Benjamin.

Benjamin stated that JAMB recognises the importance of convenience for candidates and ensures they sit for their examinations in locations of their choice among available CBT centres.

According to him, every candidate has the prerogative to choose their examination town, and JAMB assigns them to a centre within that town.

“It is our firm belief that some parents are continually being deceived, misled, and defrauded by their wards and some secondary school proprietors who perpetuate this falsehood.

“Let it be unequivocally clear: at the time of registration, candidates have the right to select their preferred examination town. JAMB subsequently assigns them to a centre within the selected town.

“The baseless claim that candidates are posted to towns different from their choices is erroneous, malicious, and aimed solely at tarnishing the Board’s reputation. It does not happen.

“The Board therefore challenges this false yet popular narrative by offering a handsome financial reward to anyone who can provide authentic proof of even one candidate who has been posted outside their chosen town,” he said.

Benjamin added that, to ensure transparency and to avoid “being a judge in one’s own case”, such proof should, within the next 96 hours, be sent to the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) WhatsApp number: 08056003030.

According to him, this process will ensure that an independent body can confirm the evidence, deliver the reward if appropriate, or exonerate the Board once and for all from the recurring campaign of calumny.

“Anyone who finds no fault in airlines requesting air travellers to arrive at the airport two hours before departure should equally find no fault in encouraging candidates to arrive at CBT centres 90 minutes before the commencement of examinations for preliminary verification.

“Many parents who expect candidates to spend no more than two hours for a two-hour examination are evidently unaware of the necessary preliminary processes,” he added.

Benjamin appealed to the public to grant agencies the benefit of the doubt and to trust that they exist to serve the public interest in the best possible manner.

He maintained that JAMB remains committed to the public good at all times.

“On a lighter note, another example of gullibility was demonstrated by a female UTME candidate who refused to attempt any questions during her examination this morning. This was because she was complying with her grandfather’s instruction to do nothing and wait for miraculous intervention,” he explained.

He advised candidates against harbouring superstitious and baseless dreams of reaping where they have not sown.

Lagos LG poll: Again, APC members protest alleged candidates imposition

Members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ojokoro LCDA, Lagos State, on Tuesday staged a protest over alleged imposition of candidates for the July 12 Local Government election.

Recall that a similar protest erupted at a party stakeholders’ meeting on April 14 in the same area, ending the meeting abruptly.

During Tuesday’s protest, supporters of some chairmanship aspirants in the LCDA gathered at the party secretariat, from where they marched to the council secretariat to express their grievances.

Some of the protesters chanted, “He is not part of us, no room from strangers in our LCDA”, “Elders and leaders are to build things and not destroy“, and “We want an indigenous leader to lead us, not a stranger”.

Others threw their fists in the air, chanting: “Don’t sell Ojokoro to strangers”, “Don’t give us a stranger,”We want people from within, not outsiders”.

Other protesters carried placards with various inscriptions such as ‘We don’t want it, we don’t like it, strangers cannot lead us”, “Hon. Ojelabi, the APC Chairman, save APC Ojokoro , “,No imposition ,Obasa is forcing on us, and “We demand free and fair process”.

“So many of these aspirants have been spending their hard-earned money for the party , we cannot scuttle their aspirations.,we cannot leave our house for strangers to lead.

“We are here to reject imposition. All aspirants deserve a fair contest to prove their political relevance.

“It is not fair to impose leaders on people. Our leaders should not push party members to the wall,” Akinoso-Olawaye said.

According to him, if President Bola Tinubu, a national leader of the party could present himself for party primaries at the presidential level, all aspirants should be allowed to test their popularity in primaries.

Another protest leader, Mrs Raimot Bello said that the protest was to prevent installation of an unfamiliar figure as the next council chairman, saying that would not augur well for the party.

Other protesters who spoke, including Alhaji Karimu Yusuf and Prophet Kayode, said APC leaders had concluded plans to impose a “stranger” as chairmanship candidate on the council.

Addressing the protesters, the Chairman, Ojokoro LCDA, Mr Hammed Tijani commended the protesters for being peaceful, assuring that no one would e imposed on the party .

“There is nothing like imposition. Meetings are still ongoing.

“We are all APC members and the party shall not be destroyed. I want to assure you, there is nothing like imposition, we have a lot of things we are sorting out now,” Tijani said.

Also Speaking ,the APC chairman in the council ,Mr Jelili Oseni, said:” Ojokoro will not turn into violence. Those who have worked for the party will be rewarded. There is no imposition here.”

  • INEC publishes final list of candidates for Ondo gov poll

INEC publishes final list of candidates for Ondo gov poll

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has published the final list of candidates and their running mates for Nov. 16 Ondo State governorship election.

Mr Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, disclosed this in a statement issued  in Abuja on Thursday.

According to him ,personal particulars of the candidates and their running mates have been published at INEC state and local government offices in Ondo State.

Olumekun said that in line with the provision of Section 33 of the Electoral Act 2022, two political parties, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and the Social Democratic Party (SDP) conducted fresh primaries to replace their earlier nominated candidates and their running mates by the deadline of June 10.

He also disclosed that five parties; the African Action Congress (AAC), the Action Democratic Party (ADP), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) and the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), replaced their running mates only.

“Overall, 17 political parties are fielding candidates for the election. No political party has nominated a female candidate while one candidate nominated by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is a person with disability (a paraplegic).

“The final list also gives the breakdown of the candidates by age and academic qualifications.

“The list has been published at our office in Akure and also uploaded to our website and social media platforms for public information,” he said.

Olumekun said that with the conclusion of the nomination process, political parties were now permitted to start public  campaigns from Wednesday (June 19) till the midnight of  Nov. 14.

“As parties commence this critical phase of the election, the commission once again reminds candidates, agents and their supporters of the provision of the law and the Commission’s guidelines governing such activity.

“For emphasis, parties shall conduct their campaigns with civility and decorum devoid of inciting language, violence, voter inducement and other infractions in accordance with the provisions of Section 92-97 of the Electoral Act 2022,” Olumekun said.

  • JAMB reschedules exams for 24,535 candidates

JAMB reschedules exams for 24,535 candidates

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) says a supplementary 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) for 24,535 candidates has been scheduled for Saturday, June 22, 2024 for some candidates.

This is disclosed in a statement to newsmen in Abuja on Sunday by the Board’s spokesperson, Dr Fabian Benjamin.

Benjamin said the rescheduled examination, taking place two weeks from now, would give affected candidates adequate time to prepare for the exercise.

He said the candidates include those from Kwara State College of Arabic and Islamic Legal Studies (CAILS) and the Kwara State University (KWASU), on the CAILS-KWASU Diploma programme.

Others are some 20,550 of the candidates whose results were up till now under investigation and 2,702 of candidates whose fingers could not be verified who were given the benefit of doubts to sit for the 2024 UTME.

He said the remaining 322 candidates have been migrated to the category of candidates under examination misconduct as a prima-facie case had clearly been established that those who had registered were not those who appeared for the examination.

He said that the number of examination misconduct had also increased by 322 to 431.

Benjamin added that the board had released additional 3,921 outstanding 2024 UTME results.

“The Board has painstakingly analysed the process and conduct of the 2024 UTME in some centres where there are strong proofs of substantial non-compliance with the Board’s standards.

“Consequently, 24,535 candidates have been rescheduled to retake the examination in their chosen examination towns on Saturday, June 22, 2024.

“Meanwhile, 3,921 outstanding 2024 UTME results that had been cleared have now been released.

“Therefore, concerned candidates are urged to check their results from Saturday, June 1, 2024 by sending RESULT to 55019 or 66019 to ascertain their status as those cleared would have their results while those rescheduled would be told that they had been rescheduled,” he said.

He urged the rescheduled candidates to print their supplementary examination notification slip from Tuesday, June 4, 2024 to ascertain their designated examination centres.

He said the additional 3,921 released results brought the total results released so far to 1,883,350.

He, however, said this notice did not concern candidates whose results had earlier been released.

He added that candidates with prima facie case(s) of examination misconduct would be further interrogated to establish their culpability after which appropriate measures would be taken on them and announced.

He also said the Board after yielding to pleas of many stakeholders and authorities for the extension of the 2024 Direct Entry (DE) registration had decided to bring the DE registration to a close on Monday, June 17, 2024.

Benjamin said in order to facilitate the wrap-up of the registration, it had expanded the DE registration points beyond the Professional Registration Centres (PRCs) owned by JAMB.

“The states where there is upsurge of prospective DE candidates as: Lagos State: -(a) JAMB PRC, No 11, Ojora Road, Ikoyi Lagos; (b) JAMB PRC, No 35-37, Isheri Road, Ogba, Ikeja Lagos, (c) ETC Nig. Ltd, 229, JKK House Ikorodu, Road, Ilupeju.

“Oyo State:- (a) JAMB PTC, JAMB Zonal Office, Quarters 845, Agodi G.R.A, Ibadan, Oyo State; (b) Federal College of Education (FCE) Special, CBT Centre, Oyo; (c) JAMB PTC, Igboho.

“Kwara State: (a) JAMB PTC, National Headquarters Annex, After Oyun Bridge, Old Jebba Road, Ilorin, Kwara State; (b) University of Ilorin CBT Centre, Mini Campus.

    “Osun State: (a) JAMB PTC, behind Technical College WAEC Road, Alekuwodo, Osogbo, Osun State;

    (b) JAMB PTC, Block Y (Commercial) OSPDC, Oroki Estate, Service Area, Ilobu Road, Osogbo, Osun State; (c) JAMB PTC, Gbongon.

“It is our belief that all eligible candidates would take advantage of this opportunity to register as no further extension would be entertained,” he explained.

He, therefore, said that the previously announced criteria for DE registration remained unchanged.

On CAILS-KWASU Diploma, he said the Board had agreed to conduct a special registration exercise for the 3,633 prospective candidates, who did not participate in the 2024 UTME.

He said they did not participate in the examination based on the assumption that they would be accommodated in the 2024 DE exercise.

He advised these candidates to register at any of the approved CBT centres in Kwara, Oyo or Osun State within the next one week (ending on Monday, June 10, 2024) to register for the UTME.

He stressed that 469 others among this category of UTME candidates, who had already taken the 2024 UTME need not retake the examination as the one they had already taken suffices.

He said this concession was to ensure that, while standards were being maintained, efforts were in place to support and promote the aspirations of qualified and willing candidates even if it required bending over backwards.

  • 1.94m students sit for 2024 JAMB – Registrar

1.94m students sit for 2024 JAMB – Registrar

The Registrar, Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof Ishaq Oloyede, says no fewer than 1.94 million candidates are projected to sit for the 2024 examinations in the country.

Oloyede said this on Wednesday in Kaduna, while inspecting Computer Based Test (CBT) centres in the state amidst the ongoing JAMB examinations.

He added that at the end of the examination today, there would be less than 100,000 candidates remaining in Lagos, Benue and other states in the country.

Oloyede explained that the pace at which JAMB cleared candidates and captured biometrics made the exercise faster.

He noted this was part of JAMB’s re-engineering process towards ensuring hitch-free exercise.

“Even today, I have seen something which we need to improve on, but most importantly, we have done so many things in the background to make the exercise faster, more efficient and better. We have increased the level of automation,” he said.

The Registrar frowned at examination cheaters, saying “It does not pay”.

He said that most of the problems JAMB faced were impersonation.

He specifically said most of the cases were candidates who have double National Identification Number (NIN), adding that JAMB would take up the issue with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).

“The important thing is that we are ahead of the impersonators, we have arrested a father writing examinations for his son, the kind of parenting in this generation is uncalled for, I wonder what the father will tell the son if they are locked up in the same cell.

“We now have the facilities to check all sorts of impersonation and other malpractices,” he said.

The registrar, however, thanked parents for their support, recalling that in previous years; they were seen loitering around examination centres disturbing.

“There is no report this year of parents intruding, except one state. In that state, they felt since the first session failed, their children should not continue with the second or other sessions.

“Out of the country’s 775 centres, those who failed were not up to 20, and only one failed. Less than 30 of the centres failed at the first session because of ill preparation.

“When such things happen, the candidates should stay aside for the next session to move because questions are designed individually for a candidate,” he said.

The National Examination Council, (NECO) has reiterated that results of candidates from states that are indebted to it  are being withheld.

The Registrar and Chief Executive of NECO, Prof. Dantani Wushishi, disclosed this on Tuesday while announcing the June/July 2023 SSCE examination results.

But he failed to reveal the identity of the states that are owing the examinations body.

Wushishi called on the states to expedite action in settling the debt, warning that the Council will not release the results of their students until the debts are liquidated.

“It is the money we use for the running of the Council. They should please pay up. We will not release the results of candidates from these states,” he said.

Wushishi noted that the poor performance of some states is a call to “look inwards to review their education sector and look also at all sectors of the education”.

Recall that 61 per cent of the candidates scored five credits, including English and Mathematics.

Appeal Court upturns judgement sacking all Rivers APC candidates

An Appeal Court sitting in Port Harcourt on Thursday, upturned a judgement of the Federal High Court presided over by Justice Emmanuel Obile which sacked all the candidates of the All Progressives Congress in the 2023 elections.

The APC and its candidates had approached the Appeal Court to challenge a judgement of Justice Obile in the matter filed by one George Orlu and 5 others.

The three-man panel of the appeal in its judgment delivered by the lead judge, Justice Muhammed Lawal Shuaibu said George Orlu and 5 others did not exhaust the internal party mechanisms before instituting the suit.

The court also held that the respondents in the Appeal did not participate in the congress of the APC and therefore did not have any cause for the action.

The panel said it was inconceivable for the Federal High Court Judge not to have joined the candidates of APC who are interested parties in the suit.

Justice Lawal Shuaibu also said the nomination of delegates and political parties issues are internal party affairs and that the Federal High Court lacked the jurisdiction to entertain the suit in the first place.

The panel awarded the sum of N500,000 against the respondents in the appeal.
