2023: INEC clears Umahi, 79 others for NASS elections in Ebonyi

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Tuesday published the list of 80 successful candidates, including Gov. David Umahi, for the 2023 National Assembly elections in Ebonyi.

The state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr Joseph Chukwu, disclosed this at a news briefing at the INEC headquarters on Tuesday in Abakaliki.

Chukwu said that the list had been displayed at the state headquarters and INEC Offices in the 13 Local Government Areas of the state.

He said that the commission cleared 32 presidential and vice presidential candidates from the 18 registered political parties for the 2023 poll.

He said the display of the list of cleard candidates was in compliance with section 32 (1) of the Electoral Act.

The section provides that the names of candidates sponsored by political parties shall be published 150 days before the election.

A breakdown of the list showed 29 Senatorial and 51 House Representatives candidates from the three senatorial districts and six federal constituencies of Ebonyi.

Gov. Dave Umahi made the senatorial list as the candidate of the All Progressives Congress for Ebonyi South.

Reps probe alleged imposition of multiple fees on JAMB candidates

The House of Representatives is to investigate alleged imposition of multiple processing and administration fees by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), and its accredited agents on candidates

The resolution followed the adoption of a motion by Rep. Sergius Ogun (PDP-Edo), at plenary on Wednesday, in Abuja.

In his motion, Ogun said section 88(1) and (2) of the constitution empowers the National Assembly to conduct investigations into the activities of any authority executing or administering laws.

He said that JAMB was established to control the conduct of matriculation examinations for candidates seeking admission into Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges of Education in Nigeria.

He added that in recent times, in addition to the registration fees for the examination, all sorts of processing and administrative fees were imposed on JAMB examination candidates.

He noted that for every other service, apart from the JAMB registration provided in relation to the examination, an administrative fee is imposed by JAMB.

Ogun added that this does not include the Computer Based Test (CTB), centre service charge collected by JAMB accredited CBT centers.

He listed some of the charges to include: Application for transfer N7,000, change of admission letter with registration number N5,000 and application for correction of dataN2,500.

Other charges according to him include: Printing of JAMB Result Slip N1,000, printing of JAMB admission letter N1,000, change of Institution/Course N2,500 and retrieving of JAMB Registration Number N1,000.

He said that by virtue of its establishment, JAMB remained an examination conducting body and not primarily a revenue generating organ of the Federal Government.

Ogun said that JAMB candidates who were not privileged to afford the charges suffered undue hardships and ultimately lost out from taking the examination.

The lawmaker said that the majority of the candidates dwell in villages, often without CBT accredited centres and as such, would have to travel long distances.

He said that by this, they often incur additional transportation costs in order to register for the examination or carry out a JAMB related service offered only in a CBT Centre.

The House therefore mandated the Committee on Tertiary Education and Services to investigate multiple processing and administrative fees by JAMB.

The House asked the committee to report back within four weeks for further legislative action.

PDP screens 33 candidates for national chairmanship, other positions

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has screened 33 candidates seeking election into the office of the national chairman and other various positions in the party’s national convention.

The aspirants were examined on Wednesday in Abuja by the screening committee led by a former Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Mohammed Adoke.

According to him, the committee hopes to finish the exercise within a day to enable enough time for the appeal committee to do its job.

Adoke, who is also a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), vowed that the committee would not succumb to external influence to force an aspirant out or in for the contest.

The PDP governorship candidate in Ondo State and SAN, Eyitayo Jegede, is the deputy chairman of the committee.

The screening exercise took place a week after PDP leaders from the North held a consensus meeting ahead of the party’s national convention scheduled to hold on October 30 and 31.

The meeting held on Wednesday last week at the Bauchi State Governor’s Lodge in Abuja was convened to trim down the number of candidates contesting in the convention.

Former Senate President Iyorchia Ayu had emerged as a consensus candidate for the chairmanship position when party leaders in the north-central region previously held a similar meeting.

On September 9, the PDP National Executive Committee (NEC) set up a national zoning committee to zone national offices to be contested by all party members.

The mandate of the committee, however, did not include zoning of the offices of the president, vice president, as well as other executive and legislative offices in the country.

Three weeks after it was inaugurated, the committee announced that the next PDP national chairman should come from the North, where that the current offices being held by officers in the South should swap places with the offices currently in the North.

According to it, this is in line with the PDP Constitution on zoning and rotation of party and national offices in the interest of justice, equity, and fairness.

The recommendations of the committee were later ratified by the PDP’s NEC.

Tinubu denies endorsing candidates for Lagos LG chairmanship, councillorship seats

The National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, has denied the claim that he has endorsed any candidate for the forthcoming local government election in Lagos State.

In a statement on Sunday, he faulted the allegations of a plot to influence the party’s primaries, saying they were targeted to hurt the party.

Tinubu noted that the APC Governance Advisory Council in Lagos met on Friday last week to discuss ways to ensure the fairness of the primaries for the poll.

“Asiwaju Bola Tinubu would like it to be known, by way of this statement, that he has no preferred candidates for the upcoming local government primaries.

“He has no intention to endorse any of the people contesting for the party nomination in any election, whether for chairmanship or councillorship positions,” the statement said.

It added, “On this matter, Asiwaju believes he can speak for the rest of the GAC regarding their belief in the impartiality and transparency of the internal party process.

“Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and the other GAC leaders seek a free, fair, and transparent process in which the candidates who emerge are those who gather the most support among the party rank and file. Only in this manner, do we best prepare ourselves for the general election.”

According to Tinubu, the integrity of the primary process is of the highest priority for the APC and all efforts must be geared towards the realisation of a free, fair, and transparent process.

To this end, he said party officials were obligated to establish the necessary arrangements to ensure orderly, peaceful, free, and fair primaries.

The APC leader added that the officials have been empowered to deal appropriately with any who might attempt to undermine or otherwise try to inject impair the party primaries, stressing the need for the party to adopt a policy of no tolerance.

He advised aspirants to embrace consensus wherever possible in order to reduce tension and avoid discord and in-fighting within the party.

“However, where consensus is not possible, fair and clean primaries must be held so that party members have a chance to choose the candidate they want from among the competing aspirants.

“All aspirants, however, must realise that only one person can win any given contest. While we encourage everyone to compete with zeal and energy, we encourage all aspirants and party members to respect the results of our primaries,” the statement said.

It added, “Once the primaries end, we must unite as a party so that we win the general elections thereby ensuring the continuity of progressive governance at the local government level throughout the state.

“In this vein, Asiwaju appeals to party leaders in all the local governments to allow democracy to flourish. He urges them to do everything humanly possible to protect and promote the democratic process.”

It goes also to show that Anambra has an abundance of human capital that can be leveraged upon to build a stable economy.

” I have to appreciate that the quality of aspirants we have today is quite commendable, which goes to show that democracy is strong and active in Anambra state. But integrity, character, courage, consistency and experience must be deeply considered before the choice of who will be the next governor is made. It’s very important… “,he emphasized.

  • Oyo LG polls: OYSIEC cancels nomination fee, to refund candidates

Oyo LG polls: OYSIEC cancels nomination fee, to refund candidates

The Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) has cancelled the nomination fee imposed on candidates for the May 22, local government elections in the state.

The commission also declared readiness to refund those it already collected.

The cancellation is contained in a statement signed by the Electoral Commissioner, Voter Education and Publicity, Prince Afeez Adeniyi, and made available to newsmen on Saturday in Ibadan.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that the commission had in its guidelines stipulated a nomination fee of N250,000 for chairmanship candidates and N50,000 for councillorship candidates.

The commission had also released the names of qualified Chairmanship and Councillorship candidates of 17 political parties who signified their intentions to participate in the May 22, local government elections.

However, concerning the issue of nomination fees, some political parties rejected the payment of nomination fees on the ground that such could disenfranchise some who were willing to exercise their rights.

The commission said that its attention was drawn to an order of Oyo State High Court in Suit No.I/177/2004: National Conscience party Vs OYSIEC and Another.

“The order delivered on March 18, 2004 to the effect that sections 10 (b) (e) and (f) of the State Independent Electoral Commission Law of Oyo State contravened sections 7 (4), 106 and 107 of the Constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999(as amended).

“In the circumstance, the commission hereby cancels payment of nomination fees of N50,000 for Councillorship candidates and N250,000 for chairmanship candidates as stated on time-table and guidelines for the election.

“This action is necessary since the Constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria takes precedence over any law or bylaws,’’ it said.

The OYSIEC enjoined all political parties that had signified intention to participate in the elections to submit names of their party agents in the polling units, wards and collation centres.

It enjoined them to submit the names at OYSIEC offices to the 33 local government councils of Oyo State on or before the close of work on Tuesday, May 19, for necessary actions on the part of the commission.

The OYSIEC reaffirmed that elections would take place in the 33 constitutionally recognised local governments in the state from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on May 22.

It added that there would be restrictions of human and vehicular movements throughout the time of the election.

The commission enjoined all eligible voters to turn out en masse on May 22, for the elections assuring them that their votes would count.

The OYSIEC said that the May 22, date for the elections as announced by the commission remained intact.

TNG reports that the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state had also written to OYSIEC for the postponement of the election to allow its candidates participate in the electoral process.
