  • I’ve changed the EPL – Guardiola hits back at Capello

I’ve changed the EPL – Guardiola hits back at Capello

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has hit back at his former AS Roma coach Fabio Capello.

Capello branded Guardiola “way too arrogant and presumptuous”, claiming he would refuse to compromise on tactics as he wanted to prove City could only win titles with him in charge.

In response, Guardiola said on Friday: “I listen to everything that people say about me, so be careful.”

“It’s not the first time Mr Fabio Capello has said that. I’m not good enough to ruin Italian football. A big hug to Fabio. A big hug.”

However, Guardiola then continued: “I don’t want to pretend to be, and naming again one of the big managers, one of the exceptional managers in Fabio Capello, and look arrogant, but we helped raise the bar in the Premier League.

“Teams had to go to the markets and that helps people. People want to do good, people are well organised, have good structures, good decisions, good players everywhere.

“I’ve been here when I went to Bournemouth in the beginning, and now it’s different. And when I went in the beginning in Brighton, and now it’s different. And when I went in Fulham in the beginning, and now it’s different.”

Capello backs Zidane to coach French national team

Former Real Madrid coach Fabio Capello thinks Zinedine Zidane has what it takes to manage France.

Capello was speaking to Flashscore on a wide variety of topics. Zinedine Zidane was one of the big personalities covered.

What does the legendary Italian manager think about Zizou as a coach?

“He surprised me with the skill with which he coached Real Madrid. He had the team, but it’s not enough to have the team. You have to know how to manage it, you have to know how to bring it to your side, you have to convince it to do certain things and he had the charisma that he had on the pitch, so I consider him capable of coaching the French team,” Capello said.

“The fact that he didn’t agree to go to other teams makes me realise that he could have accepted a team that was only at the top. After coaching Real Madrid, the top team could be Manchester City or Liverpool.”

  • Rafael Leao must fight against laziness – Capello

Rafael Leao must fight against laziness – Capello

Former AC Milan coach Fabio Capello says Rafael Leao risks failing to reach his potential.

Leao was benched for the start of Tuesday’s defeat at home to Napoli.

Capello told TMW: “Everything has already been said.

“A player with great qualities but a bit lazy. Laziness must be fought by making him understand that he can be a great player but if he continues like this he will remain a great unfinished player.”

On the title race, he also said: “We can’t write off Inter, but Napoli will be a tough opponent to beat. An excellent coach with excellent players who have rediscovered their desire.”

Euro 2024: Capello declares Calafiori ‘an absolute champion’

Former England manager Fabio Capello admits he’s a fan of Bologna defender Riccardo Calafiori.

The young centre-half has been a revelation for Italy at the Euros this month.

It was Calafiori who laid on the pass for Mattia Zacagni to score his last gasp equaliser in last night’s draw with Croatia. The result saw Italy qualify for the final 16.

Capello told Sky Italia afterwards: “Calafiori does some things… Everyone thinks he puts the ball centrally, instead with the outside he puts the ball over there.

“For me he is an absolute champion, I compared him to Sergio Ramos… He gave him the ball with the right force, the right measure.”

  • Barca v Napoli: The referee wasn’t 50/50 – Capello

    Barca v Napoli: The referee wasn’t 50/50 – Capello

Former England manager Fabio Capello insists Napoli deserved a penalty last night.

Napoli lost 3-1 at Barcelona to tumble out of the Champions League round of 16 4-2 on aggregate.

Capello told Sky Italia: “Napoli’s defence was too submissive, not very aggressive. With the quality of Barcelona, if you’re not careful, if you’re not on the man, they go to goal.

“Napoli’s defence was lacking. Osimhen? In the first half he went six times offside, in the second half we saw a little more but in general we saw little. Cubarsi suffered, he was never in control of his body. Barcelona’s defence is the weak point and what they don’t do is highlighted.

“I am not for penalties, I’m not for penalties, but the referee wasn’t 50/50 and the foul on Osimhen should have been sanctioned with a penalty kick.”

  • Koulibaly has no personality with Chelsea – Capello

Koulibaly has no personality with Chelsea – Capello

Former England manager, Fabio Capello has questioned Chelsea midfielder Kalidou Koulibaly’s situation at the London club.

The summer signing from Napoli started in Chelsea’s Champions League win against Milan, which were his first minutes under manager Graham Potter.

Capello told Sky Italia: “With Chelsea, he has no personality. When he has the ball at his feet, he hesitates. He doesn’t play fast, he doesn’t do what he did at Napoli.

“With Napoli he commanded, he came forward, he hit long passes, now he has the ball between his feet, he doesn’t know who to pass it to and he always plays short passes.

“He surprises me. I thought he had a great personality, and that he would be very important for Chelsea and explode straight away. And yet, in this moment, he is not himself.”

  • Allegri should never have returned to Juve – Capello

Allegri should never have returned to Juve – Capello

Fabio Capello says Max Allegri should never have returned to Juventus.

Allegri has battled to get Juve back to a winning consistency this season after his re-appointment.

Former Juve coach Capello said: “I had said that Allegri would become an umbrella, he would attract all the criticism. And so he did.

“Guilty or blameless? On the pitch, not guilty. He made a few mistakes, it took him a while to understand what to do but the path he chose for me is the best. Max always knows where to go. In the decision itself, guilty, he had an offer from Real and it was the ideal time to go to Madrid.

“Let’s say Juventus were a comfortable choice. Abroad it’s harder, you have to question yourself, discover that the players have different habits. Allegri seems a bit lazy, he has no interest in moving, he prefers to have Livorno close by.

“The team have decent values, certainly not the ones Juve are used to. Take Cuadrado and Alex Sandro. They used to give me the impression they push hard, now they don’t change their pace anymore. Of course, Cuadrado always has quality.”

  • I told Allegri not to go back to Juve – Capello

I told Allegri not to go back to Juve – Capello

Former Juventus coach Fabio Capello admits he urged Max Allegri to turn down a return to Turin.

Allegri has found a team at Juve beset with problems.

“I told him that he would have become the scapegoat for all problems,” Capello told Radio Anch’io.

“I told him not to return. Juventus have a winning DNA, but right now, you can’t see it.

“Players are not doing what they should. Everybody thinks it’s the coach’s fault, but it’s not like this, it’s not easy to turn the situation around.”

  • Mourinho a superior coach to Alex Ferguson – Capello

Mourinho a superior coach to Alex Ferguson – Capello

Fabio Capello has taken a swipe at former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Capello took aim at Ferguson while defending Jose Mourinho over his move to AS Roma.

“I have always been a Mourinho supporter. He has clear ideas, creates a team spirit and is able to drag everything out of the players. He has the result in his mind,” Capello told Corriere dello Sport.

“Roma are a very difficult club to work in, and I know that too well, so I can only wish Mourinho all the best. And that’s all I’ll say.

“Inzaghi has been at Lazio for five years and I think after that amount of time, a coach can no longer truly impart anything significant to his players.

“Let’s just put to one side the stories of England and Ferguson. The truth is that Ferguson didn’t coach that team, he just went to watch training sessions a couple of times a week and left everything else in the hands of his staff.

“Then he would arrive, talk, decide and they’d follow him. He was completely isolated from the everyday work of the training ground, though.

“The same goes for Arsene Wenger at Arsenal. In Italy, the way you coach a team is completely different and after five years, a coach has very little left to say.”

  • Capello blasts Ronaldo after Juve exit from Champions League

Capello blasts Ronaldo after Juve exit from Champions League

Cristiano Ronaldo and his Juventus team-mates have been eviscerated by Fabio Capello following the club’s Champions League exit at the hands of Porto.

Both Ronaldo and Adrien Rabiot were roundly slated for turning their backs on Oliveira’s shot, and former Juve coach Capello has blasted the Portuguese superstar following the team’s elimination on away goals.

“Cristiano Ronaldo can’t do that in a wall,” Capello fumed on Sky Sport Italia. “Whoever is in a wall should be aware that they might get hit and not be afraid of the ball. But he turned around and this is an unforgivable mistake for which there is no excuse.”

Ronaldo wasn’t the only one to be called out by Capello, with Merih Demiral having conceded the penalty that led to Porto’s first goal of the night.

“Juventus made elementary mistakes in both matches,” Capello went on. “There was some carelessness in Portugal then Demiral was naive in the penalty. That was a gift. He shouldn’t have tried to make the tackle, it was enough to stay tight.”
