REVEALED: Arsenal players backed Arteta on axing Aubameyang

Arsenal’s players backed manager Mikel Arteta’s handling of former captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang antics last season.

Arteta’s decision to strip now Barcelona striker Aubameyang of the Arsenal captaincy was backed by the Gunners squad – with some players even commending the Spaniard for making such a bold call.

In a new clip from the latest set of episodes from ‘All or Nothing: Arsenal’ – which will be released on Thursday – the Arsenal squad’s reaction to learning Aubameyang had been stripped of the captaincy has been revealed for the first time.

And the reaction of Mohamed Elneny and Rob Holding proves that the Gunners squad were on board with Arteta’s tough stance on Aubameyang.

Elneny asks Holding: “What happened with Auba yesterday?” to which the centre-half replies: “He want to Paris yesterday then came home and the boss wanted him back…”

Surprised by the timing of Aubameyang’s trip, Elneny responds: “One day before?” with Holding replying: “Yeah one day before and he came back the next day and then was late for training. He had permission to go there, because it was something to do with his mum – he had to go see his mum – but then he didn’t get back in time, didn’t listen to him [Arteta] and do the correct thing.”

Both were in agreement over Arteta’s big decision, with Elneny quipping: “The boss had balls,” with Holding in agreement: “Yeah the boss had b***s, eh?”

EPL: Club captains to decide on “taking the knee” this season

Club captains in the English Premier League (EPL) will meet again this week to decide on whether to continue taking the knee before matches during the upcoming season.

The anti-racism gesture has been a regular feature of English football since the summer of 2020 and was viewed as a crucial symbol in the sport’s fight against discrimination.

Its importance has been regularly debated and certain clubs, most recently Championship sides Bristol City and Swansea, last week decided to stop taking the knee.

A meeting between the 20 Premier League captains took place on Thursday with the topic of whether to keep taking the knee debated.

But, after a wide variety of views, no final decision has been made and another get-together is pencilled in for this week.

The Premier League are understood to be happy to support the players in whatever choice they decide.

But a decision is expected imminently with the top-flight set to get underway on Friday when Crystal Palace host Arsenal.

What will definitely return during the upcoming term is players walking out together again and able to shake hands or fist bump.

The coronavirus pandemic saw shaking hands stopped in a bid to prevent the spread of the virus.

But now it will be part of the pre-match ritual again.

Terrorists allegedly kidnap Army Captain, 13 soldiers in Abuja

Gunmen suspected to be terrorists have reportedly abducted a Captain of the Nigerian Army and 13 soldiers in Abuja.

This is just as the Army has launched a search party for the Captain, who was the Commanding Officer of the 13 soldiers.

    The gunmen according to reports
attempted to attack the Nigerian Law School in Bwari but the attempt was foiled following the timely intervention by security operatives.

It was gathered on Tuesday that the Nigerian Army has launched a search party for the Captain, who was the Commanding Officer of the 13 soldiers.

Recall that the troops of the Elite Guards Brigade foiled an attack by terrorists on the Nigerian Law School in Bwari.

A military signal had revealed that the gunmen on Sunday ambushed the soldiers who were on routine patrol of the area.

The troops were said to have successfully repelled the terrorists.

A military source revealed on Tuesday morning that the Commanding Officer, simply identified as Captain Samuel and 13 soldiers were still missing in the aftermath of the operation and a search party had been launched for them.

He said, “Thirteen soldiers with their Commanding Officer, Capt. Samuel who manned the military checkpoint at Bwari – Abuja, are missing after responding to a distress call of the kidnapping of some locals by a suspected Ansanru terrorist group last Sunday.

“The terrorists had earlier on Friday kidnapped many locals from the Zuma community close to Veritas University, a Catholic University located in Bwari and demanded N500,000 ransom from each of their victims.

The problem started when a member of a vigilante group in the community, who was later killed by the terrorists group yesterday alerted the soldiers of this development.

“The military responded swiftly, only for their response to become fatal as we saw many soldiers with bullet wounds being evacuated from the scene of the attack, and heavy movement of military equipment like MRAP (Mine Resistant Ambush Protected) Armoured Tanks and the military response team around Bwari for the past 3 days for a suspected cleanup operation.”

The source added, “As at the time of this report, the military is still in vigorous search of the Captain and his 13 other soldiers in the rocky terrain of Bwari; they have neither found them nor their dead bodies.

“When the wife of the military officer, Capt. Samuel, who is heavily pregnant, checked on her husband yesterday since she couldn’t reach him on the phone, some top military officers convinced her that her husband was on special duty and he is safe.

“It is important to note that Bwari suburb had witnessed large movements of over hundreds of people suspected to be Fulani herdsmen on over 300 motorbikes a day last year and alarm was raised, but the authority said that there was no cause for fear, that those people were on a legitimate movement. Since last year, kidnappings, killings and other violent crimes have risen to apogee in Bwari and its environs.

  • Why Sterling should become Chelsea’s captain – Sinclair

Why Sterling should become Chelsea’s captain – Sinclair

Former QPR star Trevor Sinclair says Raheem Sterling should take the Chelsea captaincy.

Chelsea are likely to be seeking a new captain as Cesar Azpilicueta pushes to leave for Barcelona.

Sinclair told talkSPORT: “I think Sterling should go in at Chelsea and become the captain.

“If you look at it, he’s vice-captain of England and the only person who you can say has more experience than him is Thiago Silva and he’s getting on.

“You can’t build your team around someone who might be leaving at the end of the season.

“Everyone looks up to him. You hear young players all the time talking about how Sterling did this and how he helped them with that.

“I think he could go in and be a great captain for Chelsea. He could lead that team to something very special.”

He also described Sterling as “a winner, and somebody who never gives up.”

Sinclair added: “Chelsea are desperate for an out-and-out winger.

“They’ve got a lot of No.10s and very ‘samey’ players, but with Sterling you know what you’re getting – a player who will get chalk on his heels, get players in a one-on-one situation, take them on and get crosses and shots into the box.”

Arteta reveals players reaction as Aubameyang stripped of Arsenal captaincy

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta says the players accept the decision to strip Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang of the captaincy.

The decision was announced this morning and Arteta addressed the media in the afternoon.

He said, “It is the right decision in the interests of the football, It was a personal conversation, face to face and he had to accept the decision. We have the leadership group and the different players nominated to be captain, we will follow that, it is an unpleasant situation and it is not the situation to take any rash decision.
