    24-year-old former 400m world junior champion dies in car crash

    Abdalelah Haroun, a Sudan-born sprinter who represented Qatar, has died in a car crash aged 24, track and field governing body World Athletics said on Saturday.

    Haroun was a former world junior champion over 400 metres and took bronze in the discipline at the 2017 world championships in London.

    He also won gold at the 2018 Asian Games and 2015 Asian athletics championships, in addition to indoor silver in 2016.

    Haroun gained eligibility for Qatar in 2015 and is one of several African-born athletes who have switched allegiance to race for the Gulf state.

    Radio presenter, one other die in Osun auto crash

    The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Osun on Monday confirmed the death of two persons, including a radio presenter, in an auto crash on Ilesa-Ile-Ife expressway.

    Mrs Kudirat Ibrahim, the Osun FRSC Sector Commander, told newsmen in Osogbo that the accident involving a luxury bus and a car occured opposite Old Sazo Oil station, Ilesa at 3:05 a.m. on Monday.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) learnt that the radio presenter with a private station in Ilesa was on his way to work in his Peugeot car when the accident occurred

    He was said to have been with two others in the car, one of whom also died in the accident.

    The sector commander said the injured person had been taken to Wesley Guild Hospital, Ilesa, for treatment.

    She said, “The accident occurred on Monday morning at 3:05 a.m. involving a luxury bus with registration number LND 322XY and a Peugeot 406 with registration number SMK 312 GQ.

    “About 54 persons were involved in the incident which led to the death of two persons while one person sustained injury.

    “The deceased have been taken to a morgue in Ilesa, while the only victim with severe injury has been rushed to Wesley Guild Hospital in Ilesa for further treatment.”

    Ibrahim said the accident was as a result of speeding by the drivers of the vehicles.

    She advised road users to always minimise speed on highways and obey traffic rules.

    Ibrahim, however, said normalcy had been restored on the route where the accident occured.

    Tiger Woods is in surgery after suffering “multiple leg injuries” in a car crash in Los Angeles, California.

    The LA County Sheriff’s Department said that it “responded to a single-vehicle rollover” accident in which the “vehicle sustained major damage”.

    American Woods, 45, had to be “extricated from the wreck” by firefighters and paramedics before being taken to hospital.

    In a statement to Golf Digest, Woods’ agent Mark Steinberg said: “He is currently in surgery and we thank you for your privacy and support.”

    Woman dies, three children injured in Osun car crash

    The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has said that one woman died while three children sustained various degree of injuries in a road accident on Gbogan -Ibadan highway on Thursday.

    The FRSC Sector Commander in Osun, Mrs Kudirat Ibrahim, disclosed this in a statement by the command spokeswoman, Mrs Agnes Ogungbemi in Osogbo.

    Ibrahim attributed the cause of the accident to dangerous driving and speeding without adherence to road traffic regulations by the motorists involved.

    According to her, the accident occurred on Gbongan -Ibadan highway, 23km away from Sasa bridge, Ikire, Osun State.

    She explained that the mishap involved a private car- Ash Toyota Corolla with registration number FKJ627EY which collided with a White DAF Truck with registration number XC606MKA.

    The commander said that the three children, who sustained various degree of injuries and shock, were given first aid treatment by the FRSC Ambulance team.

    Ibrahim said that the body of the woman has been deposited at the mortuary in OAU Teaching Hospital Ile Ife.

    “All items found in the vehicles were handed over to the Nigerian Police Force Ikire.

    “The items include a black bag containing some personal effects, a brown suitcase, food items and a black purse containing a driver’s licence, first Bank ATM card and a sum of N18,610,” Ibrahim said .

    She explained that a private car- Ash Toyota Corolla with registration number FKJ627EY and a White DAF Truck with registration number XC606MKA had a collision involving the six persons leading to one death.

    The sector commander called on road users to comply with road safety regulations to avoid any unwanted situations which may lead to death.

    Ibrahim, however, said safety on highways was a shared responsibilities which must not be left in the hands of the corps alone , adding that everyone must be self conscious while using the road.

    Former South African footballer dies in car crash

    Tributes have been pouring in for the South African footballer, Anele Ngcongca, who died in a car accident in Kwazulu-Natal on Monday morning at the age of 33.

    He died after moving from Mamelodi Sundowns club to AmaZulu.

    In a joint statement, the clubs confirmed the tragic news.

    “AmaZulu Football Club and Mamelodi Sundowns FC are saddened to learn of the tragic passing of former Bafana Bafana player, Anele Ngcongca.

    ”On Monday (23 November 2020) morning reports surfaced that a South African footballer had lost his life in a car accident in KwaZulu Natal.’’

    “We are saddened to learn of the tragic passing of Anele Ngcongca. We extend our deepest condolences to Ngcongca’s family,’’ said the statement.

    The clubs asked for privacy to be afforded to his family during this period.

    Ngcongca was part of South Africa’s squad that played at the 2010 FIFA World Cup and earned over 50 caps for the national team.

    His former Belgium club KRC Genk, where he played 279 matches paid tribute to Ngcongca too.

    His former teammate at Genk Kevin, De Bruyne, also sent his condolences on social media.

    Belgium and Real Madrid goal keeper Thibaut Courtois tweeted his tribute, “Sad to hear former Genkie Anele is no longer with us.

    “ Being one of the most enthusiastic players I have ever met, I’ll always remember your smile and will carry your positive mindset with me.

    “We’ll miss you deeply, my friend. My thoughts go out to your family.’’

    Ngcongca was held in high regard in Belgium where he spent a decade paying his trade.

    Samuel Eto’o survives ghastly car crash in Cameroon

    Former Cameroon captain Samuel Eto’o has escaped uninjured from a car crash on Sunday.

    The 39-year-old was travelling between Douala and Bafoussam in Cameroon when the 4×4 he was travelling in was involved in a head-on collision with a bus.

    The front end of the 4×4 was badly damaged but fortunately no-one was injured.

    A spokesman for Eto’o, Frank Happi, told BBC Sport Africa that the former Barcelona star had no injuries after visiting a hospital for a check-up.

    Eto’o decided against pressing charges against the driver, who had initially tried absconding from the scene before being apprehended and taken to a police station.

    Instead of taking legal action, there is video footage of Eto’o talking to the driver and urging him to drive more carefully.

    Hip-Hop Legend Eric B loses 28-year-old daughter in car crash

    Legendary producer, Eric B, has lost his daughter, Erica Barrier, who died after sustaining serious injuries in a car accident on Monday, March 16, in Connecticut.

    According to an Instagram post from Sister 2 Sister’s publisher Jamie Foster Brown, Barrier suffered a broken neck and spine and was admitted into the intensive care unit at Connecticut’s Hartford Hospital

    Foster Brown wrote on IG: “Twenty Eight year old, Erica Supreme Barrier, the daughter of music legend Eric Barrier ( Eric B) is in extreme critical condition this morning after a horrific car crash in Connecticut. This after an 18 wheeler rolled over her vehicle at approximately 1am in Hartford. Investigators are still piecing together the exact cause of the crash. Barrier is suffering from severe neck and spine fractures, among her many life threatening injuries, confirmed Eric B’s longtime publicist Alvina Alston.

    The family is at her bedside and asking for your prayers”

    Brown later confirmed in a second post that Barrier had tragically passed away on Monday evening, March 16.

    Brown wrote: “It is with profound sadness and disbelief that we announce the untimely passing of our beloved Erica Supreme Barrier on Monday 3-16-2020 at 6:18pm EST, states Alvina Alston, Eric B’s Publicist.

    “She fought a valiant fight, however we TRUST GOD & HIS ultimate decision to bring her home.
    We want to sincerely thank everyone from around the world for the outpouring of support and love during this difficult time.

    “Please continue to keep our family in prayer as we now prepare to lay Erica to rest. This was an unfortunate vehicular accident that claimed her life however, and it’s also crucial that we pray for the other driver involved. Our hearts also go out to him and his family as we hold no ill will in our hearts for those involved.

    “Again, we accept GOD’s will and want to sincerely thank the good samaritans, first responders and impeccable medical staff who cared for our daughter at Hartford Hospital, Hartford CT.” Says Eric B.

    Guingamp striker Nathael Julan has died after being involved in a car crash following training on Friday.

    Reports said the accident happened in Pordic, Brittany, around 15:00 GMT.

    Frenchman Julan, 23, began his career at Le Havre in Ligue 1 and made 11 senior appearances for Guingamp.

    “Guingamp is in mourning,” a club statement read. “On this tragic day, all the members of the club join together to send their sad condolences to Nathael’s family.”

    Guingamp, who play in the French second tier and are currently on a winter break, have cancelled a friendly against Concarneau scheduled for Saturday.

    Antonio Reyes car traveling at over 135mph – police

    Former Arsenal and Spain forward Jose Antonio Reyes was driving at more than 135 miles per hour when his car crashed, Spanish police have confirmed.

    Reyes’ funeral took place in his hometown of Utrera on Monday following the fatal accident on Saturday.

    The 35-year-old was registered with Segunda Division outfit Extremadura at the time of his death, having signed a short-term deal earlier this year.

    A statement from former club Sevilla which announced Reyes’ death said his cousin, Jonathan Reyes, also died in the crash on the A-376.

    The Guardia Civil confirmed to the Press Association on Tuesday evening that an investigation into the incident was continuing, with speeding the “main cause” if not yet ruled the only factor. They said the former Arsenal man had been the driver of the car.

    “The speed limit in the area is 120kph. We can confirm it (the speed of the vehicle) was the main cause of the accident,” a Guardia Civil spokesman said.

    “Our investigation remains open, we do not know if there are more causes of the accident. But right now we can confirm that the main (cause) was the speeding, it was more than 220kmph.”

    At Reyes’ funeral, his coffin was draped in the flag of Sevilla, where the forward came through the ranks before returning in 2012 to win three Europa League titles under current Arsenal boss Unai Emery.

    Former Aston Villa defender Samuel dies in car crash

    Former Aston Villa and Bolton defender Jlloyd Samuel has died in a car accident at the age of 37.

    Aston Villa tweeted: “We are deeply saddened to hear of the death of our former player Jlloyd Samuel at the age of just 37 in a car accident.

    “Our players will wear black armbands as a mark of respect tonight and our thoughts are with his friends and family at this very difficult time.”
