Carabao Cup: Arsenal beat Liverpool to reach quarter-finals

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta believes his side took a “step forward” by beating Liverpool on penalties to reach the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.

After a goalless 90 minutes at Anfield, Gunners goalkeeper Bernd Leno saved two penalties in the shootout before Joe Willock scored the winning spot-kick.

“We still have lots to learn but we are on the right path,” the Spaniard said.

“It is the third time in about eight weeks we have played against the best team in Europe, in my opinion, and it is a step forward for my team.

“We want to treat every competition as an opportunity to win a trophy, we have to do that for the club we represent and we will do that.”

The teams produced a 5-5 thriller at Anfield before last season’s penalty shootout, won by Liverpool, but this was a considerably less exciting match.

Both sides struggled for fluency after making numerous changes from their Premier League meeting on Monday.

But after Divock Origi and Harry Wilson saw efforts saved by Leno, Willock converted the decisive penalty.

Arsenal will now host Manchester City in the last eight, with all ties to be played in the week commencing 21 December.

Carabao Cup: Man Utd cruise to last eight

Manchester United beat Brighton for the second time in four days, with Paul Pogba scoring a free-kick to help seal their progress to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.

On Saturday, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side needed a dramatic late penalty, awarded via VAR after the full-time whistle had blown, to beat the Seagulls 3-2 in a game packed with incident.

This was a less frantic and fun affair, played out by largely second-string sides and in periods of torrential rain.

And it was settled in far more routine fashion, with midfielder Scott McTominay finding space in the box to head home Juan Mata’s free-kick from close range in the first half.

Having sent on both Pogba and Marcus Rashford, Mata then sealed the result with a cool finish from inside the box after he was found by a neat flick from Donny van de Beek.

Pogba added the garnish with a direct set-piece that found the top corner via a deflection.

It was an otherwise even game for large periods, with chances for both sides.

Odion Ighalo hit the side-netting from an angle after taking the ball around home goalkeeper Jason Steele, while Leandro Trossard drew a superb save from Dean Henderson in the United net with a shot from close range.

Carabao Cup: Tottenham beat Chelsea on penalties

Mason Mount missed the crucial spot-kick as Tottenham edged past Chelsea on penalties after a 1-1 draw to reach the Carabao Cup fifth round.

A total of nine penalties had been converted before Mount stepped up to take the 10th, but the England midfielder’s effort clipped the post and went wide.

Chelsea had dominated the first half and new signing Timo Werner netted his first goal for the club with a clinical finish into the bottom corner.

Spurs responded well after the break and debutant Sergio Reguilon’s side-footed effort from inside the area was pushed over the crossbar by Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, who was also making his first appearance for his new club.

Jose Mourinho’s side got their rewards seven minutes from time when Spaniard Reguilon’s cross sailed through to the back post for Erik Lamela to coolly convert from six yards.

With no extra time played, the match went straight to penalties and Mount was the only player to miss.

Carabao Cup: Solskjaer explains Pogba captaincy snub

Manchester United manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, has explained why he took the decision to hand the captain’s armband to Axel Tuanzebe on Wednesday, not Paul Pogba.

Tuanzebe was given the honour in Wednesday’s Carabao Cup third-round clash at home against Rochdale.

The 21-year-old defender has admitted his surprise at being passed the armband, with the likes of World Cup winner Pogba in the same starting XI, but Solskjaer wanted to mix things up.

Solskjaer told talkSPORT: “Axel is a captain in the making, he’s a leader – why not give to young kids?

“We know we can give it to Sergio [Romero] and we can give it to Paul, that’s no problem and they’ve been captains before.

“But it was Axel today and how does he handle it? He was absolutely fine, he enjoyed it.

“It’s just a way of telling him that we trust him.”

Kieran Tierney made his debut for Arsenal and young striker Gabriel Martinelli scored twice as they thumped Nottingham Forest 5-0 in the third round of the Carabao Cup.

Martinelli opened the scoring on his starting debut for the club in the first half, and Rob Holding headed home a second after the break before late strikes from Joe Willock and Reiss Nelson. Martinelli then added his second in stoppage time.

Forest shocked Arsenal in the FA Cup when the met in the third round at the start of 2018, but there would be no surprise result on their first-ever trip to the Emirates Stadium.

  • Carabao Cup: Tottenham stunned by League Two side

Carabao Cup: Tottenham stunned by League Two side

League Two Colchester United produced a huge upset as they beat Premier League Tottenham on penalties to reach the Carabao Cup fourth round.

The Essex side – the lowest-ranked team left in the competition – frustrated last year’s semi-finalists throughout the 90 minutes and won a dramatic shootout after Christian Eriksen and Lucas Moura missed from the spot.

After Eriksen’s first kick of the shootout was saved by Dean Gerken, the hosts looked to have wasted their advantage when Jevani Brown tried an audacious ‘Panenka’ effort, which was so weak that Paulo Gazzaniga was able to abort his dive, stand up and punch the ball to safety.

But when Moura smashed Tottenham’s fifth effort against the bar, Tom Lapslie stepped up to send Colchester into the last 16 for the first time in 44 years and prompt wild celebrations.
