  • Man City defeat Chelsea on penalties to win Carabao Cup

Manchester City won the Carabao Cup in a penalty-shoot out at Wembley after Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga defied manager Maurizio Sarri’s attempt to substitute him.

City claimed the first major trophy in their four-pronged assault on silverware but this stale final, which was goalless after extra-time, will be remembered for an almost unprecedented challenge to Sarri’s authority by Arrizabalaga.

The £71m Spanish keeper, Chelsea’s club record signing, had been struggling with cramp in the closing stages of extra-time and Sarri decided to send on substitute Willy Caballero, who saved three penalties in a shootout to help Manchester City win this trophy against Liverpool in 2016.

Arrizabalaga refused to come off and Sarri backed down in a rage, looking as if he would walk down the tunnel and then having to be restrained by Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger at the final whistle.

Sarri’s position was utterly undermined and the Italian’s misery was complete when City won the shootout, with Raheem Sterling scoring the winning penalty.

Ilkay Gundogan, Sergio Aguero and Bernardo Silva scored from the spot for City and even though Arrizabalaga saved from Leroy Sane it was to no avail.

Jorginho’s spot kick was saved by Ederson and David Luiz hit the post as Chelsea were sunk, despite Cesar Azplicueta, Emerson and Eden Hazard converting their kicks.

Manchester City retained the trophy but Arrizabalaga’s insubordination will be the headline story.

  • Carabao Cup: Man City through to final with 10-0 aggregate win

Carabao Cup: Man City through to final with 10-0 aggregate win

Manchester City reached the Carabao Cup final after completing a 10-0 aggregate win over League One Burton in their semi-final.

The tie was already over after City’s remarkable 9-0 first-leg win but Pep Guardiola still named several first-team stars in a weakened line-up.

Sergio Aguero scored the only goal of the night from Riyad Mahrez’s pass after good play from Kevin de Bruyne.

Burton did have chances with Will Miller’s shot cleared off the line.

EFL Cup holders City will face either Chelsea or Tottenham in the Wembley final on Sunday, 24 February.

Spurs lead 1-0 going into Thursday’s semi-final second leg against the Blues at Stamford Bridge.

  • Tottenham face Chelsea in Carabao Cup semi-finals

Tottenham face Chelsea in Carabao Cup semi-finals

Tottenham Hotspur must overcome another London rival to reach the Carabao Cup final match after being drawn against Chelsea in the last four on Wednesday.

Third tier Burton Albion will take on holders Manchester City however, in a pairing which comparatively looks like a mismatch.

Tottenham, who beat fierce local foes Arsenal 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium to reach the semis, have also met London clubs Watford and West Ham in this year’s competition.

“A very difficult draw, another London derby,” Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino told Sky Sports.

“We shall see. Chelsea are a great team but we are excited. To be in the semi-final is fantastic for us.”

Chelsea booked their spot in the last four with a 1-0 win over Bournemouth, thanks to Eden Hazard’s deflected winner.

Burton reached the semi-finals for the first time in their history after Nigel Clough’s side beat Middlesbrough 1-0 on Tuesday.

They face the daunting prospect of trying to stop English Premier League champions Manchester City, who beat Leicester City on penalty kicks to reach the last four.

The two-legged ties will be played in the weeks of Jan. 7 and Jan. 21.

  • Liverpool drawn at home to Chelsea in Carabao Cup

Eight-time winners Liverpool have been drawn at home to Chelsea in the third round of the Carabao Cup.

Holders Manchester City face a trip to League One Oxford United, while Manchester United are at home to Frank Lampard’s Derby County.

Arsenal, runners-up last season, take on London rivals Brentford and Tottenham will host Watford.

League Two Macclesfield, the lowest ranked side left in the competition, are away at Premier League West Ham.

Tottenham’s tie with Watford could be played almost 50 miles away from Wembley at MK Dons’ Stadium MK.

The national stadium, where Spurs are playing home games while their new ground is built, is unavailable during third round week.

“As a result of both our new stadium and Wembley being unavailable during this week, we have applied to the EFL board for special dispensation to play this tie at Stadium MK,” said a Spurs statement.

“We appreciate that Stadium MK may not be an ideal destination for every fan to get to on a weekday evening, however the club felt it would not be beneficial to request a reverse of the fixture as it would have resulted in no more than a 10% allocation of tickets for our supporters at the venue of our opponents.”

Burnley, who are also entering the competition at the third round stage, are away to League One Burton Albion.

There are four all-Premier League ties in total, with Everton at home to Southampton.

    Third round draw

    West Brom v Crystal Palace

    Arsenal v Brentford

    Burton Albion v Burnley

    Wycombe v Norwich

    Oxford United v Man City

    West Ham v Macclesfield

    Millwall v Fulham

    Liverpool v Chelsea

    Bournemouth v Blackburn

    Preston v Middlesbrough

    Wolves v Leicester

    Tottenham v Watford

    Blackpool v QPR

    Everton v Southampton

    Man Utd v Derby

  • Late drama as Forest knock Newcastle out of Carabao Cup

Nottingham Forest knocked Premier League Newcastle out of the Carabao Cup for the second consecutive season after a dramatic finale.

Championship outfit Forest took the lead in the second minute when former Newcastle striker Daryl Murphy nodded in Sam Byram’s cross from close range.

Newcastle equalised in the second of six minutes of injury time when Salomon Rondon angled in a powerful low shot.

But two minutes later Matty Cash fired home before Gil Dias’ late chip.

Forest met Newcastle at the same stage of competition last season and claimed a thrilling 3-2 victory at St James’ Park.

The conclusion to this match was just as enthralling as Forest deservedly secured their place in the third round.

Aitor Karanka’s side had taken the lead when on-loan West Ham full-back Byram crossed for Murphy at the near post.

Murphy, who scored six times in 18 appearances in all competitions for Newcastle, escaped his marker and glanced a header past Newcastle goalkeeper Karl Darlow.

Murphy almost had a second five minutes into the second half when Darlow fumbled a shot from Dias, only for Federico Fernandez to make a brilliant last-ditch block.

Darlow, a former Forest player, made a crucial save just after the hour mark when he pawed away an audacious chip from Joao Carvalho.

Forest seems to be cruising to the finish only for substitute Rondon to equalise with clinical finish – Newcastle’s only attempt on target in the match – after a clever pass from Ayoze Perez.

However, Forest hit back when Darlow parried Dias’ shot and Cash arrived in the penalty area to slide the ball home.

Newcastle then had claim for a penalty when Luke Steele grappled with Perez inside the box but referee Jeremy Simpson waved play on.

The impressive Dias then caught Newcastle on the counter and superbly chipped Darlow to seal the victory.

  • Arsene Wenger concern as Giroud injury sours victory

Manager Arsene Wenger says Arsenal cannot afford further injuries over the busy Christmas period after striker Olivier Giroud suffered a hamstring problem in their Carabao Cup quarter-final win over West Ham.

Wenger, who made 11 changes from the weekend triumph over Newcastle, saw his side struggle to break down the defensively resolute visitors in the first half.

But England forward Danny Welbeck broke West Ham’s resistance just before the break, turning in Mathieu Debuchy’s header across goal as the hosts stayed on course for a first League Cup win since 1993.

The Gunners’ night was soured by the loss of Giroud to an injury that could rule him out for three weeks, while Francis Coquelin also limped out of the match late on.

With Arsenal embarking on a run of 10 games in 36 days, Wenger admitted the loss of Giroud had come as a blow.

“It is very demanding, especially because we already have a tough schedule behind us,” he said. “We have to sit down and analyse what we can do.

“What is very worrying is when you start to lose players, like Giroud tonight. After, you cannot afford to lose another one. I have to look how I can manage the schedule.

“When you look at our fixtures in January and February, you cannot imagine we will always play with the same players in every game.

“Will I change from Premier League game to Premier League or only in the Carabao Cup? I don’t know yet – I have to look at the fixtures to see what I do.”

West Ham boss David Moyes also named a much-changed side but they failed to click in attack, with the belated introductions of Andy Carroll, Diafra Sakho and Marko Arnautovic unable to undo the home defence.

Neither Joe Hart, restored to the West Ham side for the rested Adrian, nor Arsenal’s second-choice goalkeeper David Ospina were forced into much action in what was a disjointed contest.

Moyes’ side had been content to sit back and try to catch Arsenal on the counter during a low-quality first half, but even with the attacking changes they could not muster a single shot on target.
