NAF to acquire additional 49 aircraft in 2 years – CAS

The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, says the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) would receive additional 49 aircrafts within  the next two years to bolster it’s  operations.

Abubakar made this known during the induction of two newly acquired Agusta 109S Trekker Helicopters as part of activities marking the 61st Anniversary of the NAF, on Friday in Abuja.

“The two helicopters being the first batch of the 12 in the order, was inducted by President Bola Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima,” NAN reports.

He said  said the 49 aircraft being expected include 10 additional A-109S trekkers, 12 AH-1 Zulu attack helicopters, 24 M-346 attack and ground attack aircraft, and three Kata 295 medium airlift aircraft.

“These acquisitions will significantly bolster our precision strike, ground attack, and air mobility capabilities, to support our counter terrorism, and counterinsurgency operations.

“The dynamic security landscape of our nation demands an agile, well-equipped and responsive Air Force capable of rapid deployment across multiple theatres.

“This reality underscores the need for continuous investments in modern platforms to bolster the Nigerian Air Force’s capacity to deliver air power across all spectrums of warfare.” he said.

He buttressed that the successful acquisition of the Agusta Westland 109 Trekker helicopter is a significant leap in our modernisation efforts,” he said.

Abubakar said NAF had from 2024 to date, received a total of nine brand-new aircraft into its inventory, comprising four C-129 attack helicopters, three King Air 360 aircraft, as well as the two Agusta 109 trekkers helicopters being inducted.

He said that upon assuming office in June 2023, he promulgated his command philosophy, aimed at transforming the NAF into an agile and resilient force that effectively meets the air power demands of national security in all operational environments.

“Since then, we have undertaken deliberate steps and instituted key initiatives to actualize this philosophy.

“Notably, we have prioritised mission-oriented force development and deliberate training.

“In this regard, eight pilots and eighteen engineers and technicians have been trained for the effective deployment of the trekker helicopters.

“Additionally, air and ground crew are currently undergoing specialized training abroad, and will in turn train more personnel locally to sustain capacity development,” he added.

The CAS said the NAF had continued to invest heavily in research and development to build a robust technical capacity to effectively maintain its sophisticated equipment.

According to him, the service is optimising strategic partnerships in artificial intelligence, unmanned aerial vehicle research and development, small arms, small arms and rocket developments, as well as radar enhancements, to further exploit technology to its advantage.

He said the NAF had recorded research and development breakthroughs, such as revalidation of the Alpha Jet aircraft ejection seats, retrofitting of unserviceable 68mm rockets, and the development of a test kit for determining the specific impulse of pyro cartridges, amongst several others.

Abubakar thanked the president for the new acquisition and assured that the newly acquired platforms woukd be optimally deployed and maintained to serve the best interests of the nation.

“Working closely with other sister services and security agencies, we remain resolute in our mission to ensure a secure, united, and prosperous Nigeria.

“Finally, on behalf of the officers, airmen, airwomen, and civilian staff of the NAF, I affirm our loyalty and unyielding commitment to upholding the Constitution and discharging our constitutional responsibilities with professionalism and patriotism,” he added.

NAF ready, alert, determined to protect Nigeria – CAS

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) remains ready, alert, and determined to protect Nigeria, every day, Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar has said.

The Chief of the Air Staff made this known at commemoration of the Nigerian Air Force 61st anniversary.

The Director of Public Relations and Information, NAF, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, in a statement on Wednesday, said the CAS gave the charge while on an operational visit to frontline troops in Katsina.

He urged the officers and men of the airforce to maintain high levels of vigilance and not lose sight of the ultimate goal of defending Nigeria and protecting its citizens.

Abubakar urged the personnel to maintain the tempo of operations and intensify their efforts until enduring peace and security were restored nationwide.

The CAS also noted that the ongoing 61st anniversary celebrations, while showcasing NAF airpower to the public, further enhance the Force’s state of readiness and proficiency.

“Nigerians can be rest assured that we remain fully committed to our constitutional mandate. We will continue to give our very best in defence of our nation.

“While significant gains have been made across all theatres of operation, the fight is far from over.

“Yes, we have achieved commendable milestones, but this is not the time to slow down. We must not rest on our oars.

”Now is the time to consolidate and intensify our air strikes against terrorists, insurgents and bandits.

“Even as we mark 61 years of dedicated service, we must give our fellow countrymen more reasons to hope, more victories that reassure them that their Air Force remains alert, ready, and determined to defeat all enemies of peace,” he stated.

The CAS also used the opportunity to interact with troops at the operational base, inspect facilities, and assess the state of deployed platforms.

He said the visit underscored his commitment to troop welfare, operational effectiveness, and frontline engagement as part of a broader strategy to restore peace and stability across troubled regions.

  • Sahel States’ withdrawal from ECOWAS placed increased burden on Nigerian military – CAS

Sahel States’ withdrawal from ECOWAS placed increased burden on Nigerian military – CAS

Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshall Hassan Abubakar, says the recent withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Niger and Mali from ECOWAS has placed more burden on the Nigerian military.

Abubakar said this at the opening of the First Quarter Meeting with Branch Chiefs, Air Officers Commanding and Commanders on Wednesday in Abuja.

He said that the withdrawal of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) from the existing security frameworks had disrupted the existing security frameworks in the region.

According to him, this development has direct implications for the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), which plays a crucial role in countering Boko Haram and ISWAP across Nigeria, Niger, Chad, and Cameroon.

“With AES member states opting out and Chad considering withdrawal, the MNJTF’s capacity to conduct joint operations is now significantly affected.

“As a result, the burden on the Armed Forces of Nigeria to support the MNJTF will increase, demanding a more robust, agile, and adaptive response from the Nigerian Air Force (NAF).

“Strengthening operational readiness, enhancing inter-agency coordination, and leveraging advanced air power will be critical in mitigating these evolving threats as we progress through 2025,” he said.

The CAS said that the Sahel region had continued to be a hotspot for terrorism and insurgency, with Al-Qaeda-affiliated extremist groups exploiting weak governance structures to expand their influence.

He added that the porous borders in the Lake Chad Basin, had also allowed the extremist elements to sustain their activities, posing a persistent threat to regional stability.

Abubakar said the Gulf of Guinea also remained vulnerable to maritime crimes, including piracy and illegal oil bunkering, necessitating sustained aerial surveillance and stronger regional cooperation to bolster maritime security.

According to him, addressing these challenges requires a unified approach, emphasising coordinated air operations, intelligence sharing, and strategic partnerships.

He said the meeting would provide a valuable opportunity for them to review the security landscape of Nigeria in 2024, critically assess their operational successes and challenges, and project actionable strategies for the NAF operations in 2025.

“As the senior leadership of the Nigerian Air Force, we shoulder the vital responsibility of ensuring the effective deployment of air power in support of national security objectives.

“I deeply appreciate your dedication and support so far, and I urge each of us to engage in today’s discussions with the utmost commitment, foresight, and resolve,” he added.

CAS sends fact-finding team to Zamfara

The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, has dispatched a fact-finding team to Zamfara to investigate reported incidence of civilian casualties in the recent Nigerian Air Force (NAF) airstrikes.

The Director, Public Relations and Information, NAF, AVM. Olusola Akinboyewa, made this known in a statement on Monday in Abuja.

Akinboyewa stated that the team was led by AVM Edward Gabkwet, the Director of Coordination and Cooperation (DCC) in the Civil-Military Relations branch of NAF Headquarters.

He added that the team was expected to investigate the incidence and provide detailed report for further action.

According to him, the team will liaise and interface with state and local government officials, as well as critical stakeholders, for a holistic assessment of the situation with a view to driving appropriate response.

“The CAS wishes to reiterate NAF’s commitment to the highest level of professionalism and transparency in the conduct of operations, in line with appropriate global standards.

“Our absolute value for the life and well-being of every Nigerian remains an integral part of the ethos of the service, as we sustain efforts to defeat threats to our nation’s peace, security and prosperity.

“We are also mindful of the need to maintain public trust, which is germane to our operational effectiveness.

“We enjoin stakeholders to be rest assured that NAF will continue to refine its operational procedures to ensure mission accomplishment, while protecting civilians and civilian infrastructure,” he said.

Olympic Dreams Shattered: CAS confirms suspension for Nigerian, Iraqi Athletes

The Anti-Doping Division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS ADD) confirmed today the provisional suspensions of Nigerian boxer Cynthia Temitayo Ogunsemilore and Iraqi judoka Sajjad Ghanim Sehen.

According to a statement released by CAS, Ogunsemilore was registered to compete in the Women’s Boxing 60 kg category at the Olympic Games Paris 2024.

On 25 July 2024, Ogunsemilore underwent an out-of-competition doping test, which returned an Adverse Analytical Finding (AAF) for Furosemide, a substance prohibited by WADA at all times and classified as a “Specified Substance” under S.5 Diuretics and Masking Agents of the 2024 WADA Prohibited List.

A Single Judge of the CAS ADD held a hearing with the involved parties on 28 July 2024 at 22:30 (CET) and issued a decision later the same day at 23:55 (CET), confirming the provisional suspension imposed by the IOC on 27 July 2024. This suspension will remain in effect throughout the duration of the Olympic Games Paris 2024.

Similarly, Sajjad Ghanim Sehen was registered to represent Iraq in judo at the Olympic Games Paris 2024. On 23 July 2024, Sehen underwent an out-of-competition doping test, which reported an AAF for two prohibited substances: metandienone metabolite 17b-hydroxymethyl,17a-methyl-18-norandrost-1,4,13-trien-3-one, and boldenone and its metabolite 5b-androst-1-en-17b-ol-3-one. These substances are listed as “Non-Specified Substances” under S1.1 Anabolic Androgenic Steroids of the 2024 WADA Prohibited List.

On 26 July 2024, the International Testing Agency (ITA), on behalf of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), notified Sehen of the AAF and imposed a mandatory provisional suspension with immediate effect. Sehen was informed of his procedural rights, including the right to request the B-sample counter-analysis, a provisional hearing, or an expedited final hearing. Sehen requested a provisional hearing, leading the ITA to refer the matter to the CAS ADD.

A Single Judge of the CAS ADD held a hearing on 28 July 2024 at 11:00 (CET) and issued a decision later that day at 20:00 (CET), confirming the provisional suspension imposed by the IOC on 26 July 2024.

Olympics 2024: Jamaican athlete drags Federation to CAS

Even though the 2024 Olympic Games is billed to get underway on Friday in Paris, the global event has already began in other areas.

One of such is in the area of matters related to representation, with the Ad hoc Division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) already registering its first arbitration procedure.

Ms Nayoka Clunis of Jamaica who was qualified and selected has taken the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) to CAS.

She was to represent Jamaica in the hammer throw competition at the Olympic Games Paris 2024, but eventually her name was not submitted by the JAAA to World Athletics (WA).

Ms Clunis now seeks a decision from the CAS Ad hoc Division directing that she be included on the appropriate list to participate in the hammer throw competition at the Olympic Games.

A panel of arbitrators has already been appointed to decide this dispute, composed of Dr. Annabelle Bennett of Australia as President, Ms Carine Dupeyron of France and Ms Kristen Thorsness of U.S.

It will hold a hearing with the parties on Saturday, with its decision expected to be issued on Sunday.

The 2024 Olympic Games is billed for July 26 to Aug. 11.

  • CAS clears Tobi Amusan for Paris Olympics

CAS clears Tobi Amusan for Paris Olympics

Nigeria’s 100m hurdles world record holder, Tobi Amusan has been cleared to run in the 2024 Paris Olympics Games.

The  Court Arbitration of Sports (CAS)  dismissed the appeals filed by World Athletics (WA) and by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) against the decision to clear her of a doping offence.

In July 2023, Amusan was charged by WA for  committing an Anti-Doping Rule Violation (ADRV), under Rule 2.4 WA ADR following three alleged whereabouts failures within a 12-month period.

Meanwhile, Amusan challenged the decision, and the World Athletics Disciplinary Tribunal (WADT) in August 2023, considered that Amusan did not violate Rule 2.4 of the WA Anti-Doping Rules (WA ADR) and that no period of ineligibility should be . imposed on the Athlete.

CAS in a statement on Friday, however upheld the decision of WADT.

“In their respective appeal to CAS, WA and WADA had sought the imposition of a two-year period of ineligibility.

“The CAS Panel held a hearing on  Jan. 19. Having deliberated, the CAS Panel has issued its decision today dismissing both appeals.

“The CAS Panel unanimously acknowledged that the Athlete committed two filing failures but did not confirm the existence of a missed test, alleged by WA and WADA which would have been the third whereabouts failure committed within a 12-month period.

“Accordingly, the CAS Panel concluded that the Athlete did not commit an ADRV and that the Challenged Decision should be confirmed,” CAS noted.

Doping: Jubilation in Amusan’s camp as CAS clears her of violations

World record holder, Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan has been cleared to compete at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, starting  next month, July.

The Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) has dismissed appeals by the World Athletics (WA) and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) against the women’s 100-metre hurdles world record holder.

The CAS agreed with an earlier verdict by the World Athletics Disciplinary Tribunal (WADT) that found Amusan not guilty of any anti-doping rule violations.

It would be recalled that the hurdler was suspended last year by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) for missing  drug tests three times within a 12-month period.

The body asked for  a two-year period of ineligibility for Amusan.

However, the suspension was upturned by the AIU, which allowed her to run at the 2023 World Athletics Championship.

CAS verdict on Friday marks the end of a legal process that began with the WADT’s initial decision on August 17, 2023.

  • Embrace the changing character of war, CAS urges personnel

Embrace the changing character of war, CAS urges personnel

The Chief of Air the Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, says the changes in the character of warfare must be embraced by members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria if they are to sustain the successes being achieved in the various theatres of operation.

Abubakar said this during the virtual operations briefing by the various Air Component Commanders and Air Officers Commanding on Monday.

This is contained in a statement by the Director of Public Relations and Information, NAF, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, on Monday in Abuja.

The CAS quoted a renowned air power theorist, Gen. Guilio Douhet, as saying, “victory smiles upon those who anticipate the changes in the character of war, not upon those who wait to adapt themselves after the change occurs”.

According to him, “despite the operational challenges we face, we are making good progress. We must, however, be aware that as we progress, the enemy will also try to adapt to evade our strategy.

“So, in keeping them on their toes, we must continue to think ahead and anticipate their next move,” he said.

Abubakar reiterated the need for all operational commanders to continually foster a culture of discipline, integrity and remain ever vigilant in the face of emerging threats.

He said their commitment to the defence of the nation remained steadfast, assuring that the military would continue to protect the country, deter potential adversaries and ensure the safety of lives and properties of citizenry.

He commended them for the numerous successes recorded across all the theatres of operation, leading to the elimination of key terrorists’ figures, especially in the preceding week and called on them to sustain the momentum and leave no room for errors.

“Air operations across the various theatres have witnessed commendable level of successes with key terrorist kingpins among those neutralised.

“The need to sustain the momentum of these operational successes remains at the front burner of all interfaces between the CAS and the air component commanders,” he said.
