  • Catholic church bans members from attending Fr. Mbaka’s Adoration Ministry

Catholics nationwide have been told not to attend Rev. Fr. Mbaka’s Adoration Ministry located in Enugu, Southeast Nigeria.

This statement was made by the Catholic Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Bishop Calistus Onaga on Friday evening in Enugu. state.

This is connected to Fr. Mbaka’s outburst against a Presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi of the Labour Party.

Recall that Mbaka had given a message where he said Peter Obi can never be president because he’s too stingy.

In a letter he personally signed, addressed to ‘All the Clergy, Religious and Lay Faithful in the Catholic Diocese of Enugu’, Bishop Onaga banned them from having anything to do with the Adoration Ministry.

He said in the letter that Mbaka having refused to heed to the Church’s persistent directives, “and in fulfillment of my pastoral duties as the Chief Shepherd”, “I hereby prohibit all Catholics (clergy, religious and lay faithful) henceforth from attending all religious and liturgical activities of the Cathooic Adoration Ministry until the due canonical process initiated by the Diocese is concluded.”

While noting that his decision was based on the fact that Mbaka’s teaching and utterances were not consistent with the teachings of the Catholic Church, he enjoined “all Christian faithful to keep praying for Fr. Mbaka.”

Vatican discloses uses of Pope’s fund for first time

The Vatican, on Thursday, issued the first detailed disclosure of the Pope’s main fund in an attempt to boost the confidence of the faithful in how their charitable contributions were used.

The Peter’s Pence fund, whose aim was to help the Pope run the Church, was made up of income from a collection taken up in Roman Catholic dioceses around the world once a year, individual contributions and inheritances, and bequests.

According to the “Annual Disclosure” for 2021, contributions amounted to 46.9 million euros.

Compared to previously released figures, this was down more than 15 percent over 2020, which was down 18 percent over 2019. That followed a 23 percent reduction between 2015 and 2019, according to the disclosure.

Disbursements from the fund totalled 65.3 million euros, leaving a deficit of 18.4 million euros which was covered by other Vatican income.

The Vatican’s economy minister, Father Antonio Guerrero, had said the slump in 2020-2021 was due to the COVID-19 pandemic when many churches were closed.

Many Catholics, however, said they had stopped contributing because of Vatican financial scandals such as one surrounding the purchase of a building in London, an investment at the centre of an ongoing corruption trial.

Guerrero said the finances of the Vatican had to be a “glass house”, adding the faithful have a “right to know how we use resources”.

Significantly, the disclosure for the first time, detailed how the money was spent.

About 55.5 million euros were used to help defray the costs of running Vatican departments, its embassies around the world, its communications structure and to help local churches.

About 10 million euros from Peter’s Pence went to 157 direct assistance projects, including those to help the poor, children, elderly and victims of natural disasters and war.

According to the disclosure, most of the projects were in Africa and Asia.

The disclosure gave details of some of the direct assistance projects, such as one constructing a building for young people in Haiti and another ending online sexual exploitation and trafficking of children in the Philippines.

The changes in transparency regarding Peter’s Pence stemmed from a decree by Pope Francis in December 2020.

The Vatican had been facing a series of issues some of which were clerical abuse and its handling, the new translation of the Roman Missal, the Bishop Bill Morris affair, the reining in of Caritas, the censure in the United States of the group representing religious sisters and of the work of two women theologians.

Some pressing issues also included the silencing of prominent Irish priests and the cleaning out of the Irish College in Rome, the public disquiet expressed by clergy in Austria and Ireland, the sacking of the head of the Vatican Bank, the steady leaking of confidential Roman documents.

On May 12, a former Harford County church priest was sentenced to 22 years in federal prison for coercing a boy, a parishioner to engage in sexual activities with him for nearly two years.

Fernando Cristancho was ordained as a Roman Catholic priest in Colombia, South America, in 1985, before moving to Alexandria, where he worked as an assistant priest from 1994 to 1997.

Pope Francis appeared in public for first time on wheel chair

Pope Francis, who suffered from pain in his knee, used a wheelchair for the first time at a public event on Thursday.

The 85-year-old was wheeled into the Paul VI hall at the Vatican for a meeting of a Catholic organisation of sisters and nuns, according to an AFP journalist.

He used a wheelchair after an operation on his colon last summer, but this was the first time he has been pictured in one at an event open to the media.

Francis has been suffering for months with pain in his right knee, cancelling numerous engagements, and in recent days has struggled to walk.

On Wednesday, he had to be helped out of his chair by an assistant at the weekly audience in St Peter’s Square.

Although sources have disclosed that the pope has chronic arthritis, the Vatican has not said officially what the problem is.

The pope himself has also spoken of an injured ligament in his knee.

He told Italian daily Corriere della Sera in an interview published Tuesday that he would undergo an “intervention with infiltration”.

Vatican sources said, this involved the injection of anti-inflammatories into the joint, adding that no surgical intervention was currently planned.

He told a newspaper in Argentina in April that he was treating his knee pain by putting ice on it and taking some painkillers.

Priest sentenced to 12 years in prison for child sex abuse

A German Catholic priest was sentenced to 12 years in prison by a Cologne court for sexually abusing children.

The 70-year-old has also been ordered to pay damages to joint plaintiffs of €5,000 ($5,587), €10,000 and €35,000.

The prosecution had been seeking a prison sentence of 13 years for the man; his defence a maximum of eight years.

The indictment of the pedophiles priest detailed allegations of abuse in 118 cases.

He was said to have abused children and adolescents over many years, his youngest victim was a 9-year-old girl.

The priest forced children to engage in sexual intercourse, oral sex and many other sexual acts.

Other victims came forward over the course of the trial, whereupon the charges were extended and the priest was remanded in custody.

The court was convinced that he could re-offend.

The conviction came at a time of intense scrutiny for the German Catholic Church, after a recent independent report detailed decades of alleged sexual abuse and misconduct in the Munich Archdiocese.

The Cologne archdiocese’s handling of this latest case was also criticized over the course of the trial.

Leading members of the archdiocese were supposedly made aware of the allegations and rumours but the offender was nonetheless allowed to be alone with children on repeated occasions.

The archdiocese even paid his legal fees at one point when he was facing investigation, that probe was initially dropped when the priest’s nieces rescinded their allegations against him.

Cologne archdiocese officials denied any responsibility in the trial.

“We have acted consistently,’’ Stefan Heße, the archbishop of Hamburg and former head of personnel in Cologne, said in his testimony.

He, however, cautioned members and residents of the area against taking the laws into their hands following the abduction.

  • Catholic church not against African culture – Priest

Catholic church not against African culture – Priest

Rev. Fr. Albert Ikpenwa, Rector, Bigard Memorial Seminary (BMS), Enugu, says that the Catholic Church is not against the good aspects of African culture but promotes it for a better understanding of the society.

Ikpenwa told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Enugu that the church engages itself sometimes in cultural activities as a way to promote Nigerian culture among the youths and let them know that the church is not against it.

He noted that the school would be organising cultural festival on Nov. 26 to showcase the cultural heritage of different people in Nigeria.

Ikpenwa regretted that youths allowed westernisation to influence them against their own culture but urged them to uphold those cultural values Africans are known for.

“The knowledge of our culture makes us to be our brother’s keeper, protecting one another and ensuring sacredness of lives as well as respect for elders.

“We expect the youths to come and to experience our attitude to culture on Nov. 26,” Ikpenwa said.
He, however, added that the church promotes culture which is contrary to the view of many that church came to destroy it.

According to him, the church is only against what is bad in our culture such as idol worshiping, human sacrifices and other harmful traditional practices, adding that the message of Christ takes root in all culture.

The clergyman noted that people of various races are already practicing their culture before the church came to transform it for better.

“As we know that Christianity started with Israel (Jews), then, to Rome, Roman culture accepted church and transformed their culture by removing everything that is bad in it.

“It came to Africa and tried also to transform African culture but people misunderstood it thinking it came to do away with it.

“Church transforms culture by making the gospel of Christ rooted in it and that is why we are organising cultural activities to tell our people that we are not against it,” he said.

Ikpenwa added that the festival would last for three days with symposium, drama, dance and proverbs that depict Nigerian culture.

“Here, we train Catholic priests and if they understand the culture of the people they are posted to, they would teach them good aspect of our culture.

“It is not only in Africa that we have evil culture, Romans have culture whereby people were being sacrificed to their idols and gods but when Christianity came, they stopped it,” he said.

  • Nigeria vs Twitter: Buhari has made Nigeria living hell for citizens – Cardinal Okogie

Nigeria vs Twitter: Buhari has made Nigeria living hell for citizens – Cardinal Okogie

Former Catholic Archbishop of the Lagos Diocese, Cardinal Anthony Okogie has insisted that President Muhammadu Buhari has made the country a ‘living hell for Nigerians’.

Okogie said Buhari was responsible for the worsening economic and political situation in Nigeria.

He maintained that Nigeria was currently worse than Buhari met it in 2015 when he assumed power.

The former Catholic Archbishop stated this in a statement he issued yesterday titled, ‘Cardinal Okogie: Life at 85.’

Okogie said after failing and refusing to accept responsibility, the Federal Government was clamping down on Twitter and Nigerians using the micro-blogging site.

Okogie urged the Buhari administration to retrace its steps to avoid anarchy.

Nigerian govt not doing enough, war not the way – Archbishop Onaiyekan

He also berated the Buhari-led administration over its ban of Twitter in Nigeria.

The Federal government had suspended Twitter claiming that some Nigerians were using the platform for activities against the country’s existence.

Lai Mohammed, the Minister of Information and Culture had disclosed this in Abuja recently.

However, Okogie accused the Federal Government of throwing tantrums whenever it is criticized.

The statement partly read, “A country fails when instead of reassuring its citizens by actions and policies that the future is secure, it becomes a case of most people planning to flee the country to other climes where their governments are truly functioning. Such is practically our case today. One whose house is on fire should not take to the streets dancing.

“While it is true that our problems did not start under this administration, they seem to have worsened economically and politically in these past six years.

“The sad part is that there is no articulate coordinated response from the government to stem these downward trends, apart from the usual ‘playing the ostrich’ and throwing tantrums when they are criticised, like the rather hasty suspension of Twitter.”

  • CAN praises Pope Francis for rejecting same-sex marriage

CAN praises Pope Francis for rejecting same-sex marriage

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) on Tuesday praised Pope Francis for rejecting same-sex marriage and standing by the Bible, which it described as superior to any civilisation.

In a statement issued in Abuja by its General Secretary, Mr Joseph Daramola, CAN said that the pope’s decision was godly and timely.

“ We agree with the pope that the godly and timely decision is not intended to be a form of unjust discrimination but rather a reminder of the truth of the liturgical rite.

”Our joy knew no bounds when we learnt that the decision of the Vatican’s Doctrinal Office, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, rejecting the same-sex union or marriage was endorsed by Pope Francis,” CAN said.

According to the association, the decision is the position of the Bible as stated in Genesis 9:20-27, Genesis 19:1-11, Leviticus 18:22, 20:13, Romans 1:18-32, 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, and 1 Timothy 1:10.

”Whatever law that contradicts these passages of the Bible is totally unacceptable, reprehensible and must be rejected.

“Even the practice is accursed to the animals, we wonder why normal human beings will be practising it, we condemn it in strong terms.

”We totally agree with the Vatican that, what is to be blessed needs to be “objectively and positively ordered to receive and express the grace, according to the designs of God inscribed in creation, and fully revealed by Christ the Lord.

“For this reason, it is not licit to impart a blessing on relationships, or partnerships, even stable, that involve sexual activity outside of marriage.

The association called on governments, especially in Africa, which endorsed same-sex marriage, to retreat.

“We commend the Nigerian Government for resisting the pressure to reverse its anti-same-sex policy and law,” CAN said.

  • Quit notice: Catholic reacts to presidency’s stand on threats against Kukah

Quit notice: Catholic reacts to presidency’s stand on threats against Kukah

The Order of The Knights of Saint Mulumba Nigeria (KSM) has condemned the stance of the Federal Government on the ‘Apologize or quit Sokoto’ threat issued to the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Hassan Kukah, by the Muslim Solidarity Forum.

KSM argued that the statement issued by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu is but: “a sleight underhand rebuke of the Catholic Cleric instead of his traducers.”

The Christian body insisted that the statement was a slap on the wrist for Bishop Kukah’s: “traducers whose ill-advised and unfortunate threat negates the spirit of the Nigerian Constitution and unity of the nation.”

According to a statement signed on Saturday in Abuja by its Supreme Knight Sir Diamond Ovueraye, KSM a revered association of distinguished Catholic men and Ladies noted that the security of lives and properties is a prime responsibility of the government.

Ovueraye lamented that the tongue in cheek slant of the statement is capable of emboldening the group into perpetrating acts that will be inimical to public safety.

He noted with dismay that while Shehu’s statement riled on the Bishop it was deftly apologetic and patronising to a group that apparently demonstrated scant regards to the nation’s grundnum which guarantees freedom of movement and the inalienable right of every Nigerian to live in any part of the country without let or hindrance.

Ovueraye noted that a few days earlier the Federal Government had through the Minister of information and National Orientation, Alhaji Lai Muhammed, reacted: “vigorously to Kukah’s Christmas day Homily warranting further elucidation from the revered Bishop.”

He, therefore, implored the government to always be dispassionate in assessing what it considers criticism and to always take in good faith: “constructive criticisms of its stewardship.”

“In the light of the needless furore that the Federal government reaction to Bishop Kukah’s Christmas day Homily had generated, Ovueraye tasked the government to ensure that nothing untoward happens to Bishop Kukah and all others who because of their love for Nigeria speak up when they see things going wrong.

“Let us demonstrate that irrespective of differences in tribe, religion and culture, we are all Nigerians. We must all look out for one another and contribute to building a virile nation which we will be proud of,” KSM added.
