Lawan gives details as Osinbajo meets APC Senate caucus

Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, says the National Assembly caucus of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is working hard to ensure the party retains power in 2023.

Lawan spoke with State House correspondents on Tuesday after the breaking of Ramadan fast hosted by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo for the Senate caucus of the 9th Assembly.

Lawan said the vice-president briefed the caucus about his intention to run for the office of the president in 2023 and caucus members wished him well.

Osinbajo had in a video posted online on Monday, declared his interest to run in the 2023 presidential election.

“We had dinner with the vice-president to break the fast and thereafter, we had a brief interaction on our government and the vice-president’s declaration to run for the president’s office.

“Naturally, the vice-president told us he had expressed his interest and that he needed to consult with the Senate APC caucus.

“He wanted us to hear from his mouth and that we did, and he was seeking our support in whatever way we can at the appropriate time, and we wished the vice-president good luck in this endeavour.

“Let me assure everyone that the Senate APC caucus and indeed, the National Assembly caucus of the APC will continue to work very hard for our great party the APC, to continue to provide services to Nigerians.

“We shall also work hard to ensure that by 2023, the next administration is an APC administration at the federal and states levels by the Grace of God,’’ Lawan said.

Impeachment: House Caucus move against Buhari Constitutional – PDP

…says call was a direct reflection of the mood of Nigerians

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) asserts that the call by its caucus in the House of Representatives asking Nigerians to direct their representatives, across party lines, to commence impeachment process against President Muhammadu Buhari is constitutional and democratic.

TheNewsGuru.com, (TNG) recalls that the PDP caucus had on Saturday issued a statement asking constituents across Nigeria to ask their representatives across party lines to demand for President Muhamnadu Buhari’s impeachment.

This development didn’t go down well with the House leadership that Immediately issued a statement attacking the author of the the statement using unprintable graffiti.

Apparently reacting to the lacklustre statement, the party through its Publicity Scribe, Kola Oligbondiyan states that the call is a direct reflection of the mood and desires of the Nigerian people, given President Buhari, manifest failure in all spheres of governance and particularly in failing to provide an effective leadership that can guarantee the security of our nation and rescue our economy, which has collapsed in his hands.

As a party, the PDP had always called on our federal legislators in the House of Representatives and the Senate, irrespective of political affiliations, to stand on the side of the people by deploying the legislative instruments provided in the 1999 Constitution (as amended) to rescue the ship of state.

The Buhari administration had already accepted failure as reflected in the declaration by one of its officials, that the nation is now at the mercy of bandits and terrorists, a development that signals that it has outlived its usefulness.

President Buhari is elected by the people; his stay in office is also dependent on the people as vested on them by the Constitution, through their elected representatives in the National Assembly.

The PDP therefore urges Nigerians to eschew all primordial sentiments and stand for the nation at this critical time.

Reps PDP caucus frowns at Police role in Edo Assembly crisis

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) caucus in the House of Representatives has frowned at the roles allegedly played by the police in the crisis rocking the Edo State House of Assembly.

The caucus in a statement by its leader, Kingsley Chinda, on Sunday, wondered why the police would allegedly escort some members -elect of the Edo Assembly to meet in an undisclosed location, where they purportedly impeached the speaker, Frank Okiye

The caucus noted that the attempt to impeach Okiye “through the back door”, as a desecration of the institution of the legislature and as affront on the people of the state.

According to the opposition lawmakers, “the men who were accompanied by the policemen are believed to be members elect whose seats were declared vacant and the action is still a subject of ligation.

“By the provisions of Section 52 and 53 of the Constitution, a member-elect must first be sworn in by the Speaker at a properly convened seating of the House and only the presiding officer is vested with the powers to convene the House.”

The caucus added that “without going into the merit of the matter in litigation, we simply state that no proper seating of any Assembly can be convened, except by the Presiding Officer through the Clerk of the House.

“Thus the purported seating of the Edo State House of Assembly under the protection and supervision of the Nigerian Police is an act of political desperation and a call to anarchy.

“This action is very likely to push Nigeria to the pristine old days, whereby the military and anti democratic forces held sway, and lead to serious crisis that could cause the collapse of democracy in the country.”
