Why Super Cup triumph so special – Chelsea chief

Chelsea technical chief Petr Cech has singled out the European Super Cup victory over Villarreal as epitomising the squad’s team spirit.

He wrote for chelseafc.com: “When thinking about my own highlights, I can’t look past the obvious ones. What stands out is the Champions League final and the Super Cup. The Champions League final was really hard, but we scored and saw the game through, which was hugely satisfying. We really deserved to win the Champions League on the back of every game and every round we negotiated.

“We won the group, and then in every knockout round we were the better team. That was what was special. It felt like we were unbeatable in that competition.

“The one thing that really showed the solidarity and strength of the group was the Super Cup. With all the difficulties of not being able to have a normal pre-season, people come back at different times and really late, some players got a chance to be part of the team and show what they can do.

“The special moment was the shoot-out when we swapped the goalkeepers. That’s not an easy thing to do, but it showed the respect and solidarity of each member of the squad. Everybody matters, everybody is important, and everybody sticks together.”

Lampard hails Cech influence on Chelsea summer transfer success

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has paid tribute to football chief Petr Cech for his work in the market this year.

Lampard praised his relationship with former team-mate and Chelsea. performance director Cech, who has helped to build a rejuvenated Blues squad following £253million worth of investment this summer.

The Chelsea manager said: “That will only ever be decided by the owner and the only thing I can do is look at what’s in front of me and at that minute. Since I came in here, the relationship I have with Petr Cech has been a huge strength for me. I get on so well with him and, hopefully, we work well together.

“I said before I would love to do this job as long as possible but I’m also very aware it will be based on results. At the minute, I think we’re working towards something and people are getting very excited and mentioning us being in a title race this year.

“I always saw it as a longer plan than that and it might take until next year for us to really challenge, because of the signings, because of the bedding-in process. What we’re doing at the moment, it’s really getting people excited, but I know we need to be consistent throughout the season.”

  • Ozil out of Arsenal’s Premier League squad, Cech in surprise return at Chelsea

Ozil out of Arsenal’s Premier League squad, Cech in surprise return at Chelsea

Arsenal’s out-of-favour midfielder Mesut Ozil was left out of their 25-man English Premier League (EPL) squad list for the 2020/2021 season released on Tuesday.

This has further increased the likelihood that he has played his last game for the north London club.

Ozil, who is under contract with Arsenal until June 2021 and earns a reported 350,000 pounds (452,830 dollars) per week, has not played for Mikel Arteta’s side this season.

The 32-year-old German playmaker, who last played for Arsenal in March, was also axed from their 2020/2021 Europa League squad earlier this month.

Arteta had said last month that his team are “evolving” and that Ozil would find it difficult to find a place in the squad, casting doubts over his future at the club.

Defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos was also left out of Arsenal’s Premier League squad after he too was excluded from the Europa League squad.

Elsewhere, Chelsea named Petr Cech, who played for the club from 2004 to 2015 and currently works as technical advisor at Stamford Bridge, as emergency goalkeeper cover amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Cech had retired as a player in May 2019 after playing for Arsenal in their Europa League final defeat by Chelsea.

“We don’t want to risk having a difficulty with finishing a game. Although this is just an emergency option and the likelihood is very small, we want to be safe,” Cech said via his representatives.

“The manager, Frank Lampard, decides on who gets nominated and who does not.

“In the end, we agreed and it was actually also his idea that since I train with the team, it will make sense to put me in for some emergency situation.”

Manchester United excluded defender Phil Jones and goalkeeper Sergio Romero from their squad, while Danny Rose was left out by Tottenham Hotspur.

This was after he failed to secure a move to a second-tier Championship club on transfer deadline day.

EPL leaders Everton dropped winger Yannick Bolasie after the 31-year-old failed to make the matchday squad this season, having last played for the Toffees in May 2018.

Premier League clubs can register 25 first team players over the age of 21, of whom a minimum of eight should be home-grown.

A “homegrown” player is defined by the Premier League as a player of any nationality who is 21 or older on Jan. 1, 2021.

Such a player must have spent three years between the ages of 16 and 21 at an English league team.

Werner admits ‘crazy’ being around Lampard, Cech

Chelsea striker Timo Werner admits he has a hard time keeping his cool when surrounded by club legends.

The German arrived from RB Leipzig in the summer for a £47.5 million fee.

The 24-year-old has started the season impressively, playing as a striker and off the left wing.

And Werner admits when he interacts with manager Frank Lampard and technical director Petr Cech, he finds it tough to stop getting starstruck.

“As a child, you don’t see much of the teams in the Premier League but you see them in the Champions League, so you see Chelsea, Manchester United,” he told Three UK.

“These were the clubs in my youth that won a lot so maybe [Cristiano] Ronaldo or when you are here, you hear [about Didier] Drogba and also Frank Lampard the manager, they have a lot of legends in the club here.

“When you come here and see they are working for the club, you see them and you were like a child like 10 or something, you see Ashley Cole, Lampard or Petr Cech you think ‘it’s crazy, I’m here now with them!’ It’s a lot of fun.”
