World Cup qualifier: Why Nigeria will play Central African Republic in Cameroon

The Central African Republic will host Nigeria in a World Cup qualifier in Douala, Cameroon instead of their country.

This is because of a standing order from the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

In August this year, CAF barred eight countries from hosting World Cup qualifiers.

They are: Mali, Burkina Faso, Central African Republic, Djibouti, Guinea-Bissau, Malawi, Namibia and Niger.

The decision was taken after the countries failed CAF’s venue inspections.

They will instead play their home fixtures at a neutral ground.

CAR defeated Nigeria 1-0 in the first leg and will be looking to complete a stunning double over Gernot Rohr’s men in Douala.

Sad! Peacekeeper killed in Central African Republic auto crash

A Cameroonian UN peacekeeper was killed and four others were injured in a road accident in the Central African Republic, Cameroonian authorities said late Sunday.

The accident occurred Saturday night in Boultili, a locality situated about 56 kilometres from CAR capital Bangui while the soldiers were patrolling in a UN vehicle, authorities said.

It was not immediately clear what caused the tragedy, but military sources told Xinhua the vehicle probably lost control and crashed.

The wounded were taken to a UN medical centre to receive medical attention.

The soldiers are part of a Cameroonian contingent deployed to join the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in the CAR, which started in 2014 to protect CAR civilians under the UN Charter.

MINUSCA had beefed up operational capabilities in the CAR to help maintain stability after ragtag rebel groups threatened to disrupt legislative and presidential elections.
