Alleged fraud: Court upholds withdrawal of Orji Kalu’s university certificate

A court of appeal sitting in Owerri, the Imo State capital, has upheld the withdrawal of the Bachelors’ degree certificate of former Governor of Abia State, Senator Orji Uzo Kalu, by the Abia State University.

The presiding judge, Justice Oludotun Adefope-Okojie, on Tuesday, thereby, nullified the judgement of a high court in Isikwuato, Abia State which had restored the Bachelors’ degree certificate of the former governor.

In 2018, the Abia State University withdrew Senator Kalu’s certificate over allegations of fraud and breach of admission regulations concerning his graduation.

But the former governor later approached a state high court in Isikuato in Abia State challenging the allegations and the subsequent withdrawal of his degree by the university.

The appeal court’s decision on Tuesday was on the grounds that the state high court in Isikwuato lacked jurisdiction over the matter.

UI Registrar confirms Obaseki’s year of entry, graduation; says certificate not forged

Mr. Abayomi Ajayi, the deputy registrar, legal of the University of Ibadan on Tuesday testified in the ceritificate forgery case instituted against Governor Godwin Obaseki by the Edo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Ajayi took the witness stand and told the Federal High Court Abuja that the fact that some parts of Obaseki’s original degree certificate were missing in the photocopy he attached to his INEC form EC9 and 001 did not amount to forgery.

The witness, who was led in evidence by Mr Ken Mozia (SAN), Obaseki’s counsel, explained that Obaseki’s photocopy was incomplete due to the process of photocopying.

The witness also told the court that the university was not dealing with this allegation for the first time as the Minister of State for Education had once brought the issue before the institution.

He maintained that from the records of the university, Obaseki was admitted as student in 1976 through direct entry and that he graduated in the year 1979, during the tenure of Prof. Tekena Tamino as Vice Chancellor and S.J Okufu as Registrar.

“I will not regard the photocopy of the original certificate as forged but incomplete photocopying because the certificate of the University of Ibadan is larger than the paper upon which the photocopy was made,” Ajayi submitted.

He then went ahead to tender photocopies of various sizes of papers and their outcome when the original was not reduced.

Other documents he tendered to prove that Obaseki was a product of the university included relevant pages of the congregation for admission to degrees, award of diplomas and certificates and 31st Foundation Day Ceremony in September 1979, Obaseki’s application amongst others.

The authorities of university of Ibadan had in June last year, before a Federal High Court in Benin, cleared Obaseki of similar forgery allegations.

The institution said that Obaseki graduated from there and was accordingly awarded the degree certificate of Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Classical Studies in 1979.

Ajayi gave the evidence as Obaseki opened his defence.

    He was Obaseki’s first witness.

The second witness, Mr Charity Aguobawekhina, Chairman of the Edo State Law Reform Commission, tendered the original of Obaseki’s certificates, including the disputed BA Arts Degree in Classical Studies.

The witness who claimed to be a close associate of Obaseki, informed the court that he made the said incomplete photocopy that Obaseki attached to his nomination form that he submitted to INEC.

He added that part of the photocopy attached to form EC9 were cut off because of the largeness of the original certificate.

He also tendered the primary school certificate obtained by Obaseki in 1971, School Certificate obtained in 1973 and Higher School Certificate obtained in 1976.

Other documents were the University of Ibadan degree certificate obtained in 1979 and another Masters Degree certificate from Pace University obtained by Obaseki as his educational qualification.

All the certificates, which were original copies were admitted as exhibits by the trial judge.

Under cross examination, the witness insisted that the photocopy of the degree certificate, which had the signature of the university’s chief registrar, the date of issuance of the certificate and the name of the vice chancellor did not make the photocopy of the certificate a forged document.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) and one of its chieftains, Mr Williams Edobor, dragged Obaseki to court for allegedly forging his university certificate, which he submitted to INEC to aid his qualification for the Sept. 19, 2020 governorship election in Edo.

The plaintiffs wanted the court to disqualify Obaseki, who won the election, in the event that he was found to have forged his university degree obtained from the University of Ibadan in 1979.

Royal insubordination: Ngige’s community sacks Okonkwo, presents new monarch, an Evangelist for certification

    From Chuks Collins, Awka

Apparently taking a cue from two other communities of Aguleri Otu and Mkpunando Aguleri that have since replaced their suspended traditional rulers respectively, the people of Alor community, home of the Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige have picked and presented a new monarch to Gov Willie Obiano, for recognition and formal.

The imminent certification would then draw a curtain on the checkered brief reign of the erstwhile monarch -McAnthony Okonkwo.

Okonkwo was among the thirteen monarchs who were recently suspended by the state government for acts considered as official insubordination, hence incongruous to their high exalted office as traditional rulers.

Addressing journalists yesterday at the Government House, the President General of Alor People’s Assembly, Chief Okife Igbonwa had alleged that it wasn’t unexpected that Okonkwo would crash land in no time, because his emergence and enthronement didn’t follow due process or the community’s constitution and established tradition. It was reason Alor was embroiled in turmoil ever since his emergence, until now that the people have collectively elected her traditional ruler. The community was so incensed under him that they passed vote-of-no confidence on him seeking his summary removal but had prevailed on them to see if he would turn a new leaf. But the last straw that broke the carmel’s back came when the same Chinedu Okonkwo joined other disobedient monarch on a ill-fated journey to Abuja to desecrate the office of Gov Obiano who certified him some months ago.

Everyone that need to be involved was involved, voted their choice -Pastor Collins Ebelechukwu Chukwumesili, and consequently joyously presented him to the world.

Igbonwa early in the week led people of the community to the Anambra Government House where the new Igwe was presented in anticipation for his formal recognition and certification. He disclosed that the new monarch and people of Alor will remain very loyal to the state government.

Earlier the new monarch told our correspondent that his top priority was to restore peace, love for one another and cohesion in the community as soon as possible before embarking on massive development drive. He pointed out that the people are presently scattered and restive, that he will key into the Alor Youth Vanguard to nip youth restiveness.

Sen Ngige who witnessed the entire traditional process had expressed happiness that at last the people’s choice has mounted the saddle, contrary to the imposition of McAnthony Chinedu Okonkwo.

Chukwumesili, an established international businessman emerged tops amongst other contenders from his Uruezeani village whose turn it was to replace the late Igwe J. C Nkwoka. After his presentation and acceptance by the people, the new monarch was handed the community’s traditional staff of office (Ofor) by the Ezeofor VII of Alor, Ozor Gibson Onyekonwu. He is married with children

NYSC issues new certificate to Obaseki

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has issued a new certificate to Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki.

The new certificate was issued following an official request by him.

The governor served his father’s land in 1980 but it turned out there was an error on the certificate issued to him.

His surname was written as Obasek instead of Obaseki and this was one of the reasons cited for his disqualification by the All Progressives Congress (APC) panel which screened aspirants for the Edo 2020 primary.

The decision of the APC, however, led to his defection to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The coast is now cleared for him to seek his re-election after other PDP aspirants running against him stepped down.

Kenneth Imasuagbon, one of those who stepped aside for the governor, said he was inspired by Obaseki’s performance as the leader of Edo State.

He said Obaseki has been a “victim of godfatherism” and will help the Edo leader fight anyone who wants to “enslave” the people of the state.

However, the National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) appointed the Governor of Rivers State, H. E. Nyesom Wike, as the Chairman for Obaseki’s election campaign council on Friday.

Adamawa State Governor, Rt. Hon. Ahmadu Fintiri was appointed as Deputy Chairman of the council.

The election is scheduled for September 19, 2020.

Certificate saga: Obaseki’s case not considered on merit, says legal rep

The legal representatives to Edobor Williams & others, Shores & Savanna has said the certificate suit of Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki was never considered on merit.

According to the legal representatives, the plaintiffs withdrew the suit from the Federal High Court, Abuja, having achieved their objective of stopping the All Progressives Congress (APC) from sponsoring Governor Obaseki.

In a statement, the representatives threatened that the plaintiffs would take further steps after the nominations of all the parties are concluded and the names of their candidates submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The statement reads: “Obaseki’s certificate suit was voluntarily withdrawn by APC members who filed the suit.

“The suit No FHC/ABJ/CS /553/20; Edobor Williams and others vs APC & Obaseki was 29/6/2020 withdrawn from the Federal High Court, Abuja, by the plaintiffs who are APC members.

“It would be recalled that the plaintiffs were opposed to APC nominating Godwin Obaseki as its gubernatorial candidate for the September 19, Governorship Election for Edo State on account of Mr. Obaseki’s inconsistent educational history, false credentials and forged Affidavit.

“These were the same reasons for which APC eventually disqualified Godwin Obaseki from participating in the APC Gubernatorial primaries of 22/6/2020 to the satisfaction of the plaintiffs.

“The plaintiffs voluntarily filed a Notice of Discontinuance of the said suit having achieved their objective of stopping APC from sponsoring Godwin Obaseki. The public MUST TAKE NOTICE that the case was never considered on merit.

“Plaintiffs would take further steps after the nominations of all the parties are concluded and the names of their candidates submitted to INEC”.

Edo 2020: What we will do differently to confirm authenticity of Obaseki’s certificates – PDP

Anthony Aziegbemi, Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party in Edo State, has stated that Obaseki’s certificates will be investigated.

Aziegbemi stated this while reacting to the circumstances that lead to the defection of Obaseki from the All Progressives Congress.

Obaseki, who joined the PDP on Friday, left the APC after he was disqualified by the committees inaugurated by the National Chairman of the party and his political adversary, Adams Oshiomhole.

According to the APC committees, Obaseki was disqualified over multiple inconsistencies in his presented academic certificates, including a Higher School Leaving Certificate the Governor claimed to have obtained from an Institute of Continuing Education in Benin City, Edo State.

Obaseki’s NYSC certificate was also faulted.

However, Aziegbemi said APC’s action was a clear case of ‘vindictiveness of the highest order.’

He, however, noted that his party will set up a strong team to investigate his certificates.

He said: “I am sure you saw the sham called a screening committee which the other party had? It was a clear case of ‘vindictiveness of the highest order’ and there was no need for it to happen in the first instance. The PDP will set up a very powerful team to look at those papers. I suspect that the screening process of the other party (APC) was more of vindictiveness. They were not fair to him, but we will not do that. We will be transparent and investigative.”

However, the PDP postponed its primaries from June 23 to 25 to accommodate the verification process and other activities.

Edo 2020: Obaseki disqualified by someone without certificate – Wike

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has reacted to the disqualification of Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, from contesting in the All Progressives Congress’ primaries slated for June 22.

In a tweet on Monday, Wike, mocked the APC national chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, whom he did not mention by name but referred to with the certificate saga which sprang up days leading to Obaseki’s disqualification.

This is coming less than 24 hours after Wike hosted Obaseki on Sunday in Port Harcourt.

Wike tweeted; “Obaseki was disqualified by someone who doesn’t have a certificate, what an irony!”

He further wrote; “The Governor’s Forum has become a voiceless beggarly group.”

Obaseki, who is seeking a second term in office, was on June 12 disqualified from partaking in the party’s primary over discrepancies in names on his certificates and for dragging the party to court which was in violation of party rules.

Following his unwillingness to appeal his disqualification, Obaseki says he will make his next move public after consulting with his supporters and meeting President Muhammadu Buhari.

  • Obaseki finally reacts to certificate forgery allegation as APC commences probe

Obaseki finally reacts to certificate forgery allegation as APC commences probe

Edo state Governo, Godwin Obaseki has refuted the allegations that he forged his university certificate.

Obaseki spoke during a meeting with ward leaders in Oredo local government area of the state.

A suit was filed against the governor over allegations of certificate forgery.

The plaintiffs alleged that the governor forged his bachelor of arts (B.A.) certificate in classical studies from the University of Ibadan and prayed the court to disqualify him from contesting the forthcoming gubernatorial election in the state.

Chris Ogiemwonyi, one of the governorship aspirants under the platform of the All Progressive Congress, also alleged that Obaseki was foisted on the state in 2016.

But reacting to the allegations, Obaseki wondered how he could have forged a certificate from the University of Ibadan, adding that he would never cover up issues regarding his certificates.

He also said he won the 2016 elections including that of his ward, saying the documented election results are available for scrutiny.

He said the governorship election will be a turning point in the history of the state, promising that his administration will be an inclusive one if he is reelected.

“I am just going round to say thank you to my people for their support so far. I am assuring them that I will continue my good work in the state.

“When people come out to lie that I didn’t win my ward during the last election, they forget that election results are documented.

“They say I forged my certificate. How can you forge the certificate of the University of Ibadan? I am not like those that burn buildings to cover up their certificate issues.

“We have been practising democracy for 21 years now. We cannot continue to behave the same way. This time, we will change the narrative.

“This will be a government of the people by the people and for the people. It will not be a government of the people by a few people.”

Meanwhile, All Progressives Congress (APC) has expressed its resolve to probe into the genuineness of relevant documents including the educational certificates of Governor Godwin Obaseki and five others for the party’s June 22, 2020 gubernatorial Primary Election in Edo state.

The six aspirants, who have bought, completed and submitted the party’s expression of interest and nomination forms are Osagie Ize-Iyamu, Godwin Obaseki, Dr. Pius Odubu, Engr. Chris Ogiemwonyi, Osaro Obazee and Matthew Aigbuhuenze Iduoriyekemwen.

APC, in a statement by its national publicity secretary, Malam Lanre Issa-Onilu, explained that the decision was aimed at ensuring due diligence and transparency in the screening exercise.

Disqualification saga: APC adopts public screening of credentials of Edo guber candidates

In a smart move to avoid a repeat of the Bayelsa scenario, the All Progressives Congress (APC) is to subject credentials submitted by the six aspirants seeking for the party’s governorship ticket in Edo State for the September 19 governorship election to public verification.

This will be followed by the final scrutiny by a yet to be constituted screening panel by the party.

The six governorship aspirants to be screened for the Party’s June 22, 2020 Primary Election to elect the party’s Edo state governorship candidate are Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, Godwin Obaseki, Rt. Hon. Dr. Pius Odubu, Engr. Chris Ogiemwonyi, Hon. Osaro Obazee and Hon. Matthew Aigbuhuenze Iduoriyekemwen.

This novel approach to screening of aspirants for the party’s ticket for elective offices was contained in a statement issued in Abuja on Friday by the National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu.

According to the party: “In our bid to ensure due diligence and transparency in the screening exercise and learning from our recent shocking experiences, we are determined to avoid any lapses in the process. Therefore, we are making the submitted information and documents of the governorship aspirants available to our party members and the public for verification of claims and to support the screening panel with information or any objection to the claims contained in the submission by the aspirants.

“Consequently, the various submissions will be displayed at the Party’s National Secretariat in Abuja and in Benin City, the Edo State capital from Monday 8th to Tuesday 9th June, 2020 for claims and objections.”

The party then invited party members and members of the public to assist the screening committee by scrutinizing the information, credentials and documents provided by the governorship aspirants and avail the Screening Committee of counter and correct information, if applicable.

The party had earlier released its time table and schedule of activities for the conduct of the 2020 Governorship Primary Elections in Edo States in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) guidelines.

With the sales and submission of Expression of Interest and Nomination forms completed, the publication of claims and objections is slated for Monday 8th and Tuesday 9th June, 2020 while the screening panel has Wednesday 10 and Thursday 11, June, 2020 to scrutinise the credentials of the aspirants and the screening appeal holds on Friday 12, June, 2020.

The party’s primary election will hold on Monday 22nd June, 2020, while the election appeal has been slated for Wednesday June 24, 2020.
