Representing the All Progressives Congress, Aiyedatiwa defeated Agboola Ajayi of the Peoples Democratic Party and 15 other candidates.

FG suspends evaluation, accreditation of certificates from Benin, Togo

The Federal Government has suspended the evaluation and accreditation of degree certificates from Benin and Togo Republic.

This is contained in a statement in Abuja on Tuesday by Mrs Augustina Obilor-Duru, Assistant Director, Press, Ministry of Education.

This suspension came as a result an investigative work by a journalist that led to a publication in the Daily Nigerian Newspaper on Dec. 30.

A reporter with the newspaper, Mr Umar Audu had carried out an investigation titled

“UNDERCOVER: How DAILY NIGERIAN reporter bagged Cotonou varsity degree in six weeks, participated in NYSC scheme”.

Obilor-Duru said, however, that the suspension was pending the outcome of an investigation that would involve the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the two countries.

She said that the investigation would also involve the ministries responsible for education in the two countries as well the Department of State Security Services (DSSS), and the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC).

She called on the general public to support the efforts by showing understanding and providing useful information that would assist in finding lasting solutions to prevent further occurrence.

“This report lends credence to suspicions that some Nigerians deploy nefarious means and unconscionable methods to get a Degree with the end objective of getting graduate job opportunities for which they are not qualified.

“The ministry has also commenced internal administrative processes to determine the culpability or otherwise of her staff for which applicable Public Service Rules would be applied.

“The issue of degree mills institutions, i.e institutions that exist on paper or operate in clandestine manner outside the control of regulators is a global problem that all countries grapple with.

“The ministry has been contending with the problem including illegal institutions located abroad or at home preying on unsuspecting, innocent Nigerians and some desperate Nigerians who deliberately patronise such outlets,’’ she said.

She also said that periodically, warnings had been issued by the ministry and the National Universities Commission (NUC) against such institutions adding that in some instances, reports were made to security agencies to clamp down on the perpetrators.

“The ministry will continue to review its strategy to plug any loopholes, processes and procedures and deal decisively with any conniving officials.

“The Ministry had always adopted the global standard for evaluation and accreditation of certificates of all forms which relies on receipt of the list of accredited courses and schools in all countries of the world.

“The ministry wishes to assure Nigerians and the general public that, it is already putting in place mechanisms to sanitise the education sector.

“This, including dissuading the quest for degree certificates (locally or from foreign countries) through a re-invigorated focus on inclusivity, reliance on all skill sets as directed by President Bola Tinubu,’’ she said.

She also said that the ministry was, however, committed to collaborating with stakeholders, including civil society organisations, to consistently enhance the Nigerian education system.

  • Obi carpets Tinubu, queries APC Candidate’s ancestry, certificates

Obi carpets Tinubu, queries APC Candidate’s ancestry, certificates

The presidential candidate of Labour Party, Peter Obi has slammed Bola Tinubu querying his ancestry, his credentials and questionable accomplishments.

Obi’s media office response came in the wake of an earlier dismissal of the Labour Party candidate by the coordinator of the Tinubu media office, Dele Alake.

Alake had in a media session alleged that Obi cannot name any legacy projects of his years of governing Anambra State and, therefore, cannot be compared to Tinubu.

Responding, the Obi-Datti media office lambasted him for the remarks.

It said: “Alake is certainly among those Lagosians who believe Nigeria begins and ends in Lagos and may not have crossed the River Niger in his lifetime.

“He might not have been to Anambra and had been too biased to read up the LP candidate’s records in the public domain.

“Suffice it to say that Obi’s records won him numerous awards, including ‘Governor of the Decade’ while Alake’s paymaster ruled Lagos State.

“Alake also claimed that Obi’s business is anchored on imports that destroy the economy and that he was not around when his principal struggled for democracy.

“Again, the attack dog is either mischievous or ignorant about Obi being the only chief executive of his era with the most investment of state funds that not only boosted the economy but also provided jobs, not to talk of Obi’s education policy that has taken Anambra State from number 29th to first in the school certificate performance index,” Obi said in response to the Tinubu campaign.

“If Alake is current, he should not have celebrated Asiwaju’s role in the democracy struggle because it has been diminished since it was revealed that he lobbied to be made a minister in late Sani Abacha’s government and only joined NADECO after he was rejected by the junta.

“However, Alake gave out one fact that the Media Office agrees with: indeed, Obi cannot be compared to Alake’s candidate.

“Yes, they are not comparable; Obi is highly verifiable, but Alake’s man is not; Obi has an origin; Alake’s has none; Obi has educational credentials; his counterpart has affidavits; Obi is hale and hearty and ready to face the challenge of leading Nigeria, the other candidate acts by proxy; Alake’s man says it’s his turn to rule Nigeria, Obi says it’s the turn of Nigerians to take back their country” Obi said in reference to issues around the certificates of Tinubu.

“Indeed, there is no basis for comparison between the two. We are in sympathy with these attack dogs who need to keep attacking the man they claim has no structure and is just a social media wave instead of selling their structured candidate. All they seek is to mention Obi to be able to trend.

“The Obi-Datti tag team is in the market with their content which is resonating with Nigerians, let Alake’s enter the stage and sell himself, never again will anybody become Nigeria’s President through fake and unsubstantiated packaging.”

Obi who arrived California on Monday for an engagement with the Nigerian community is about his most poignant response to any of his rivals so far.

UNN denies fixing deadline for collection of certificates

The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has denied fixing a deadline for the collection of degree and diploma certificates.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports UNN made this known in a statement released on Tuesday by Dr. Okwun Omeaku-Chief (Dr), Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the institution.

“While we encourage our graduates to come for their certificates, we urge the general public to disregard the deadline stipulated in the fake circular.

“The University has commenced the process of shutting down the fake accounts used by merchants of falsehood to deceive unsuspecting members of the public”.

Two pastors land in prison for brainwashing congregation to disown parents, burn certificates

An Ilorin Magistrates’ Court, on Thursday, remanded two pastors: Olumide Peter and Jasulayomi Adetola, for allegedly brainwashing their congregation to disown their biological parents and burn their certificates.

The defendants were charged with criminal conspiracy, unlawful assembly, wrongful confinement and putting persons in fear of injury in order to commit extortion.

The Magistrate, Ibrahim Dasuki, ordered the defendants to be remanded in Oke-Kura Correctional Centre, Ilorin.

He, thereafter, adjourned the case till Jan. 28, for further mention.
Earlier, Counsel to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Mr Ajide Kehinde, said that two children and four adults, who were reportedly abducted by the pastors, were rescued by the corps.

He said that the defendants, who are pastors at Evidence of Christ Fellowship International Church, Agbo-Oba, Ilorin, kicked against Western education, claiming that it was a sin and that any certificate acquired through it was evil.

Kehinde said that the pastors had been extorting money from international organisations by sending recorded videos of the children, claiming that they were victims of natural disasters and internally-displaced persons.

Kehinde said further investigation revealed that the pastors kicked against Western education, urging its congregation to see it as ungodly.

He said that the offences were contrary to Sections 96, 100, 260 and 293 of the Penal Code Law.

The counsel prayed the court to remand the defendants on the basis that one of them was still at large.

He said that releasing the defendants on bail might jeopardise efforts to carry out proper investigation into the matter.

The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against them.

  • Edo 2020: PDP threatens Oshiomhole over Obaseki’s certificates

Edo 2020: PDP threatens Oshiomhole over Obaseki’s certificates

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on Saturday threatened to set up an inquiry into the incident that led to the fire outbreak that razed the Ministry of Education, Iyaro, Benin, in 2011/2012.

Chief Dan Orbih, Chairman of the PDP Edo governorship election campaign council handed down the threat during the party’s ward-to-ward combined campaign rally for Wards one and two, Oredo Local Government Area.

Orbih said that the worrisome incident occured during former Gov. Adams Oshiomhole under questionable circumstances adding “those who live in glass houses should not throw stones.”

He said that if the former National Chairman of the All Progressive Congress (APC), and the immediate past governor of the state fails to stop talking about the educational qualification of the PDP candidate, he would personally sponsor an independent judicial enquiry into the fire outbreak.

He also said that no man could truncate the two terms of eight years tenure of its candidate, Gov. Godwin Obaseki, adding that since the return to democracy, successive governments in the state had done two terms of interrupted eight years.

He noted that the tenure of Obaseki would not be an exception, adding that this was even more so because of the achievements of the present administration in the state.

He stressed that what the administration had achieved in four years was far greater and much more than what the immediate past administration achieved in eight years.

He explained that the administration had among other achievements completed projects abandoned for more than 45 years.

He further said that the eligible voters in the state should not be intimidated by the threat to unleash “human lions and tigers” during the election, saying the lions and tigers should find their way to the zoo.

Meanwhile, Obaseki has said that the Sept. 19, polls would strengthen the bond of unity of citizens of the state.

Obaseki noted that Edo had always been united and the unity had always reflected even during elections to choose the state governor.

He noted that he was optimistic that citizens of the state would not allow one man to disrupt the unity of the state.

He called on the electorate to rise up and stand together against divisive forces whose agenda was to cause disunity and chaos in the state.

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has asked foreign-trained graduates with questionable degrees from institutions in Benin Republic and some other African countries who have not been issued Certificates of National Service to visit the headquarters of the scheme for further scrutiny.

The NYSC made this known in a statement on Friday in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

The organisation asked the foreign-trained graduates concerned to report at the NYSC headquarters on Monday in Abuja.

“Foreign-trained Ex-Corps Members who participated in the recently concluded 2018 Batch C, Stream l Service Year with questionable degrees from Universities in Benin Republic and some other African Countries, and have not been issued Certificate of National Service (CNS) to present themselves for further scrutiny.

“Those concerned are to report at NYSC National Directorate HQ, Abuja from Monday 14th October, 2019,” the statement said.

  • Osun uncovers 769 civil servants working with forged certificates

Osun uncovers 769 civil servants working with forged certificates

The Osun Government on Friday said it has discovered 769 workers in the state’s civil service who were working with fake and forged school certificates.

Mr. Adelani Baderinwa, who is supervising the Information and Strategy Ministry, said in a statement that the discovery was made after five years of screening carried out by a consultancy firm employed by the state government.

A consultancy firm, The Captain Consultants, engaged five years ago by the state government to verify the results and other necessary documents of the workers in the state, has completed its assignment and submitted its report.

The screening of the workers’ credentials came on the heels of controversies and reported forgery of results which some of the workers allegedly used to secure job in the Osun civil service.

At the commencement of the screening exercise in 2015, all the civil servants in the state were asked to submit their credentials in their personal files from which the Captain Consultants firm got access to their results and begun the verification exercise.

Each and every result submitted by each of the workers was verified in their various secondary schools, post secondary schools and tertiary institutions.

Some of the workers who were suspected to have forged/fake results were summoned by the firm and asked to present original results or go to their various schools for either attestation or re-confirmation.

The firm, on its own, approached the schools for ‘confirmation of results’ of the affected workers for which they were obliged.

The verification process uncovered serious certificate infraction on the part of some of the workers across Ministries, Departments and Agencies of the government.

In some cases, as discovered in the verification process, some of the affected workers used another person’s result, while some forged their secondary and post secondary schools results to secure job in the civil service.

In the case of some people employed as drivers in the service, it was discovered that they forged the ‘O’Level results they submitted for their appointment.

However, the firm in its report recommended that some of the civil servants caught in the certificate infraction be pardoned, while some should not be pardoned.

Recommended for pardon are 102 drivers and 30 other workers who are to be pardoned on compassionate ground. A total of 586 workers are not pardoned, while the case of some 51 workers are still pending.

While the exercise was on, some of the workers who were cleared and pardoned were receiving their salary, while those that are yet to be pardoned have their salary suspended.

A complete list of all the workers involved in the certificate infraction has been pasted at the Ministry of Information and Strategy, Civil Service Commission and Local Government Service Commission.

Affected workers should check their names in the aforementioned places,” he said.
