  • APC faring better under my chairmanship – Oshiomhole

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, on Monday, claimed that he has provided good leadership for the party.
According to him, Nigerians are appreciating APC better under his leadership.
Oshiomhole had taken over APC chairmanship from Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, who hails from the same state, Edo.
Speaking with State House correspondents after meeting President Muhammadu Buhari in the State House, Oshiomhole said that APC now has more members in the National Assembly and also controlling the leadership of the two chambers.
He also maintained that APC, under him, was able to uproot the former Senate President, Bukola Saraki and his cronies, politically.
Stressing that APC is waxing stronger, he said that the opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party is in turmoil.
He said that President Buhari was magnanimous to have nominated up to two ministers each from states that contributed less than 5% of the President’s votes in the 2019 Presidential election

  • Gbajabiamila's House C'ttee chairmanship list: A time bomb waiting to detonate

Speaker of the House, Hon Femi Gbajabiamila on Thursday released his committee list that best could be described as a time bomb waiting to detonate.

Never in the history of all the assemblies in Nigeria that a list of committee Chairmanship has been so laced with so much vendetta.
All those perceived to have voted against the Lagos politician were dumped in the garbage.
His henchmen got all the juicy committees while those in the opposition perceived to have voted against him were properly thrashed.
They were simply given graveyard committees including Hon Umar Bago the only man that dared him.
Bago was not spared and Hon John Dyegh despite dumping his speakership ambition at the last minute was made to chair an invisible committee.
Top ranking lawmakers that had acquired legislative experience over the years were made ordinary floor members.
Hon Chukwuma Oyeama, Hon Tajudeen Yusuf, Uzoma Nkem-Abonta, Kingsley Ogundu Chinda, Mark Gbillah, Solomon Maren, Rimamande Shawhulu and others were denied the opportunity to exhibit their legislative business experience.
Out of 105 committees , 82 All Progressives Congress, APC lawmakers were anointed committee chairmen.
The Peoples Democratic party, PDP got 13 while other political parties got 5.
It’s pure and simple, Gbajabiamila simply followed the instructions of his party leaders.
APC Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole had vowed before now that opposition parties will not get juicy committees.
As it is they got nothing!
His vow has been crystallized by his anointed candidate blessed by the all powerful leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.
For posterity sake let us take a cursory look at what Aminu Tambuwal and Yakubu Dogara did in their time.

In the composition of heads, Dogara’s key men clinched headship of juicy Committees such as Appropriation which was chaired by Abdulmunin Jibrin, Rima Shawulu Kwewum headed Army, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, Aviation, Zakari Mohammed, Basic Education, Chike Okafor, Healthcare Services and Aminu Shehu Shagari Federal Judiciary.

Also not left out were the core supporters of the House Leader, Rep. Femi Gbajabiamila as they were also compensated with juicy committees such as Customs headed by James Faleke, and Rufa’i Chachangi as the Vice Chairman of the committee, Sani Zoro heads the newly created Internally Displaced Persons, IDP and Garba Muhammed as the committee chairman on Solid Minerals.
There was also a balance between the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, and the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, as the ruling party APC, heads 48 Committees, PDP 45 while All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA and the Social Democratic Party, SDP got one chairmanship slot each.
In the composition, the South heads 46 Committees while the North heads 50.
The above was what transpired in the immediate past Assembly of the House of Representatives.
In 2011, Tambuwal brought both those that openly attacked him and anointed them with juicy committees.
One of the biggest beneficiaries was Dogara who initially never supported Tambuwal and he got the committee on Welfare Services.
Gbajabiamila as House minority leader even struck out names of Hon Abike Dabiri-Erewa and Hon Jumoke Okoya-Thomas because they were considered enemies.
But Tambuwal magnanimously cleared them and gave them committees.
Where is Gbajabiamila’s magnanimity in victory? How can he run a House with so many still born babies in parliamentary duties.
No attempt to even balance the composition based on Federal Character?
The House has adjourned for six weeks, this is definitely a list laced with atomic bomb.
  • JUST IN: Ex-NHRC Chairman sues commission over plan to subject staff to secrecy oath

Former Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Chidi Odinkalu has sued the commission over its alleged plan to compel its staff to subscribe to an oath of secrecy/confidentiality.
Odinkalu, in a suit he filed on Monday before the Federal High Court, Abuja argued that the policy violates the staff’s rights to freedom of expression guaranteed under the Constitution and other instruments.
The rights activist contended that the NHRC and its Executive Secretary are not empowered by any known law to direct the commission’s staff to subscribe to an oath of secrecy/confidentiality, the observance of which would violate his (the applicant’s) right to freedom of expression guaranteed under Section 39(1) of the Constitution, among other provisions.
He is praying the court to among others, declare the plan to administer the secrecy oath on the NHRC staff as unlawful and a violation of constitutionally guaranteed rights.
Odinkalu is also seeking an order of perpetual injunction, restraining the respondents from proceeding with the plan to subject staff of the NHRC to oath of secrecy/confidentiality.
Listed as respondents are the NHRC, its Executive Secretary, Anthony Ojukwu, the Nigeria Civil Service Union (NHRC branch) and its Chairman, Comrade Efem Atu.
He stated, in a supporting affidavit, that “by an internal memo or circular dated 3rd July, 2019 and signed by one Ibe Obidigwe on behalf of the 2nd respondent, the 1st and 2nd respondent, directed all Heads of Departments/Units/State Coordinators of the 1st respondent (NHRC) to distribute copies of an oath of secrecy declaration to staff of their various departments/units etc to subscribe and return same to the 1st Respondent‘s Human Resources Management Department.
“A copy of the oath of secrecy declaration document to be subscribed by the staff of the 1st respondent was attached to the said internal memo or circular dated 3rd July, 2019.
“In the desperate bid of the 1st and 2nd respondents to achieve their purpose of compelling or getting the staff of the 1st respondent to subscribe to the said oath of secrecy, had a meeting with the 3rd respondent (the Nigeria Civil Service Union (NHRC branch) on 5th July, 2019 and enlisted the cooperation of the 3rd respondent to get its members to subscribe to the said oath of secrecy.”

  • Akwa Ibom guber: APC demands resignation of Tribunal chairman

The All Progressives Congress(APC) in Akwa Ibom has called for the resignation of Hon. Justice Jennifer Mbalamen Ijohor, who is the chairman Panel of 2 in charge of National and State House of Assembly Election Petition Tribunal in the state.
The APC observed that Hon. Justice Ijohor is the wife of Professor Anthony Ijohor, the Secretary to the Benue state government as well as strong stalwart of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP), who also served as special adviser to Governor Samuel Ortom.
State chairman of the party, Mr. Ini Okopido in a press conference Saturday at the party secretariat Uyo alleged that there was a clear conflict of interest in her work as chairman of the tribunal.
”Akwa Ibom State Chapter of the APC has established that Hon. Justice Jennifer Mbalamen Ijohor, who is the Chairman of Panel 2, National and State House of Assembly Election Petition in Akwa Ibom State, has a strong family relationship with a PDP stalwart, and so, there is a clear conflict of interest in her work as the Chairman of the Tribunal.
”In deed, we can say categorically that the Hon. Justice cannot discharge her duties as objectively as we would expect.
”We know for a fact that the husband to Hon. Justice Jennifer Ijohor, Prof. Anthony Ijohor, SAN, is the Secretary to the Benue State Government under a PDP governor. Prof Ijohor is a strong PDP stalwart in Benue State. Before he was appointed SSG, Prof Ijohor was an Adviser to the PDP Government of Governor Ortom.
”He (Prof Ijiohor) holds very strong and critical views about the APC. It is not farfetched if these sentiments are shared between husband and wife.
”Gentlemen of the Press, you will recall that it was only last month that the President of the Court of Appeal, Hon. Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa recused herself from presiding over the Presidential Election Petition Panel for the reason that her husband is an APC member”, Okopido said.
The APC state chairman alleged that Hon. Justice Jennifer Ijohor as chairman of the tribunal has shown clear bias against the APC in the election petition matters brought before the tribunal hence the need for her to resign.
”We have three major reasons to believe that Hon. Justice Jennifer Ijohor’s conflict of interest has become a burden for her, and so she has not been discharging her duties at the Tribunal objectively.
”One, the Petition number EPT/AKS/HR/08/2019 between Edidiong Efiong Idiong & APC (Petitioners) and Emmanuel Ukpong-Udo, PDP & INEC (Respondents) in respect of Ikono/Ini Federal House of Representatives was struck out on the strength of interlocutory injunction application. This was despite spirited arguments by Counsel to the Petitioners drawing the Panel’s attention to the relevant sections of the Law to persuade the Panel.
”Similarly, the Petition Number EPT/AKS/HR/03/2019 between Hon. Ekerete Ekpenyong & APC (Petitioners) and Hon. Michael Enyong, PDP & INEC (Respondents) for Uyo/Ibesikpo Asutan/Uruan/Nsit Atai Federal Constituency was denied the amendments sought by the Petitioners at the pre hearing stage by the Hon. Justice Ijohor on the flimsy excuse that the name of the federal constituency was not written in full.
”Our lawyers’ spirited arguments to have that amended were turned down. Such amendments are being routinely granted by other Panels and indeed regular Courts. Of course, we have appealed these judgement.
”Another reason we believe that the Hon. Justice is biased against the APC and its candidates is rooted in the public statements and tweets of Henry Ijohor, who is the only son to the Hon. Justice. In his various statements and public communication, Henry has indicated more than a passing interest in the petitions filed at the various tribunals, particularly those in Akwa Ibom and Rivers State. In his tweet of 21st March, 2019, sent out at 8.24pm, Henry said: “The judges and lawyers handling Rivers and Akwa Ibom elections petitions have to be experienced. On the surface it’s obv ious they’ll (sic) be a lot of pressure on them and a lot of work to be done” @BarrHenryIjohor.
”We therefore request the Hon. Justice Ijohor to do the right thing and recuse herself from the Election Petition Tribunal in Akwa Ibom”, he said.
The party also raised the alarm that its witnesses at the tribunals are being threatened and intimidated by persons suspected to be members of the PDP.
”Last month, APC witness, Mr. Tiebet Joshua reported to the Panel 1 of the National Assembly Tribunal that Engr. Chris Ekpenyong, who is the Respondent in the case at the Tribunal, had personally called him and threatened to kill him if he testified for Senator Godswill Akpabio, the Petitioner. And early this week, Dr. Ita Udosen, the Deputy Chairman of our Party in the State, received a phone call in which the caller threatened to trail and deal with him.
”This was in the day he appeared in the Witness Box for his Party and governorship candidate. Dr. Udosen had reported this threat to our Legal Team, who then reported it to the Tribunal. In addition, the Deputy Chairman has formally reported the matter to the security agencies.
”Gentlemen, we believe that these threats are the tactics of the PDP and its members who are now embarrassed as the Tribunals are listening to, and seeing evidence of, the revelations of their ungodly practices during the elections.
”We call on the Security agencies to track down these criminals and bring them to justice. As a Party, we will never be cowed or intimidated by unscrupulous politicians and their collaborators at INEC”, he said.
