  • Plateau PDP suspends chairman, deputy over alleged missing funds

The internal crisis rocking the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Plateau state on Wednesday led to the suspension of the chairman and his deputy by the state working committee.

All has not been well with the party’s internal structure since it lost the governorship contest to the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC).

While briefing newsmen at the party secretariat in Jos, publicity secretary of the party Hon John Akans said: “The Plateau state chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has suspended its Chairman, Hon. Damishi Sango, Deputy Chairman, Hon. Amos Gombi Goyol over alleged diversion of Presidential campaign funds and N9.8 million meant for Internally Displaced Persons during the 2019 general elections”

Akans revealed the suspension of the principal officers has the backing of 16 members of the State Working Committee of the party.

Akans said the suspension takes immediate effect.

Akans who read the letter of suspension to journalists in said the Party’s vice chairman, Northern Zone, Hon. Chris Hassan has taken over the leadership of the party as acting chairman pending conclusion of the disciplinary committee’s investigation of the alleged funds.

“The Party Chairman Hon. Damishi Sango and his Deputy Hon. Amos Gombi Goyol have been suspended based on the reasons the resources send to the State for Presidential elections were not accounted for by the Chairman aided by the Deputy Chairman.

“The chairman concealed the amount sent by the Presidential Campaign Committee and created a fraudulent unseen template used as sharing formula unknown to the State Party structure.

“About N5 million raised and saved by the party to help Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) to help relieve their pains were also not accounted for up till this moment.

“No mention has been made of the said funds and it is worthy to note that the Deputy Chairman is the chairman Committee on IDPs for the party.

“Also, about N4.8 million meant for PDP Plateau State retreat was equally not accounted for by the Chairman and the Deputy Chairman.”

Akans said the party was plunged into confusion during the general elections due to the highhandedness of the chairman and Deputy Chairman of the party who disregarded advice from party’s elders and critical stakeholders.

In a swift reaction, Sango said he was not aware of all the allegations raised by the party.

He expressed surprise he was betrayed by people he considered close to him in the party.

“I am not aware that I have been suspended, I have not seen any letter to that effect.

“I am surprised that I was betrayed by people I considered close to me in the party.

“There was a State Campaign Council, which the Governorship candidate, Sen. Jeremiah Useni was part of it. All money was disbursed by the campaign council.”

  • Why Senate could not confirm Magu as substantive EFCC chair – Saraki

Why Senate could not confirm Magu as substantive EFCC chair – Saraki

Senate President Bukola Saraki Monday explained the controversial refusal of the Senate to confirm Mr. Ibrahim Magu as the substantive chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Saraki said that Magu’s appointment may have been confirmed but for the failure of the Presidency to explore the established channel of lobby.

Besides, he said that “political solution” should have been applied after the Senate rejected nomination twice.

The Senate President spoke at the orientation programme organised for Senators-elect and House of Representatives members-elect ahead of the inauguration of Ninth National Assembly in Abuja.

Saraki attempted to parry questions on why the National Assembly did not go to court for a definite pronouncement on the failed confirmation of Magu’s appointment as EFCC’s substantive chairman.

He was forced to respond when the question was asked repeatedly.

Saraki said that it is left to the Executive arm of government to find a replacement of any ministerial nominee rejected by the Senate.

Talking specifically on Magu’s nomination, he said that there was no doubt that the Senate has the power to confirm or reject his nomination.

On why the Senate did not go to court for a pronouncement on whether the Senate has the power to confirm the EFCC chairman, he said that there were over 12 court cases pending on the issue.

Saraki, who said that some of the cases had been pending in court for over two years, added that he cannot explain why the cases have not been decided.

He, however, noted that “in cases like the EFCC chairman, there is always the need for political solution and dialogue to solve such issue. But to say whether the Senate has the power to confirm, the Senate has power to confirm. The power of confirmation is there even in America which we copy.

When the Executive makes appointment, there is issue of lobby. This is why we want a particular nominee. It is done even in America.”

On the election of presiding officers of the Ninth National Assembly, Saraki advised senators-elect and members-elect that they should be in the chamber on the day of inauguration.

He insisted that the inauguration and election of presiding officers only take place on the floor of the two chambers of the National Assembly.

The Clerk to the National Assembly, Mohammed Sani-Omolori, who opened the orientation, gave an overview of the National Assembly, including structure, functions and inter-parliamentary relations.

In the course of his presentation, Sani-Omolori said that one of the functions of the Senate is the confirmation of nominees from the executive arm of government.

The power of confirmation of nominees prompted questions on the confirmation of Magu and why he is still serving as Acting Chairman of EFCC when he was denied confirmation.

Sani-Omolori said that he was not in a position to answer political questions and referred the question on Magu to Saraki.

Saraki noted that the options are that the President can lobby the legislature or present someone else at the event of rejection of a nominee.

Saraki said: “The point I am making is that we should not make too much news on the process of electing a presiding officers. What is important is for the members of the Senate to decide who is the best to lead them so that they can have stability.”

On non-confirmation of Magu, Saraki said: “The truth really is that the issue of confirmation whether ministerial or other appointments, is done by the entire Senate. Generally, we have an unwritten practice that we would get the input of senators from the state where the appointee hails from before we start the screening process in the Senate. By the powers of the Senate, if such a nominee is rejected, then it is upon the executive to find a new replacement. The issue really is that the Senate has the powers to reject a ministerial nominee.

In the case of the appointment of the chairman of the EFCC, the powers of the Senate are very clear in the constitution. For any nominee, we are guided by the constitution. It is an appointment made by Mr. President, subject to the confirmation of the Senate, which means the Senate has the powers to either say yes or say no.

In a situation where the Senate rejects, it is up to the executive at that time to send in a replacement or in some cases, when we have appointment rejected and the executive will re-present before the Senate but if the senators again, took a decision to reject the nominee, the appointment stands rejected.

On getting judicial interpretations of their roles, there are 17 cases in court that have been on now for two years and for one reason or the other, those cases have not moved. I cannot explain what happened. They are cases that have to deal with asking the courts to give judicial interpretations to who has the powers to do one thing or the other. I am sure by the time the judiciary gives the interpretations, there is no doubt about it that it will be clear that it is the Senate that has the powers

In things like this in a democracy, there must be a political solution, there must be dialogue. I think that is the most important thing. The Senate has the power of confirmation. It is how to manage those issues that are the challenges. There will be many like that in the Ninth Assembly. The question is how the executive and the legislators will work together and find a solution. It is how the relationship between the two arms of government.

There is also a wrong perception that the leadership of the Senate has those powers. The powers of the presiding officers are in the members. It is the members that decide the leadership of the National Assembly. Most of the decisions especially confirmation, are usually taken by the members. In other countries, the executive there are seen to be lobbying the legislators. When they have a candidate, they will go and lobby to get in their preferred choice appointed.”

Kano supplementary election is “do or die” for us – APC Chairman

A video has gone viral showing the Kano State chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Abbas, describing the supplementary governorship election in the state as a “do or die.”

In the short video, the party chairman also assures supporters his party would provide maximum protection for its members even if it means ensuring the dismissal of police officers who try to restore order.

Dressed in a white Kaftan and a white cap, Mr Abbas sat on a plastic chair in a house presumed to be his residence. Surrounding him were youth applauding his remarks.

Speaking in Hausa, he said his listeners should stand against any opposition that comes their way during the elections.

There is every possibility that you can be arrested. But let me tell you; before you get to the police station we will make sure you are released and the police that arrested you will likely lose his job.

We are going to give you every protection that is required. This election is a matter of do or die for us. We must win this election,” Mr Abbas said.

Check revealed that the video was uploaded on the internet on March 13.

Recall that Kano State is among the six states where the governorship elections were declared inconclusive. Others are Plateau, Adamawa, Sokoto and Bauchi states. Before the declaration in Kano, the PDP was leading the APC in the governorship election in the state.

Before the announcement of the election result, the deputy governor of Kano State, Nasir Gawuna, and the commissioner in charge of local government and chieftaincy affairs, Sule Garo, were arrested for trying to disrupt the announcement of the results.

The two officials were arrested some minutes after 2 a.m. Monday after they arrived at the venue of the state collation centre and began to disrupt the process.

Their action led to a halt in the announcement of results at the centre after some youth suspected to be supporters of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) tried to attack the two officials.

The police later released Gawuna without charges as he enjoys constitutional immunity from prosecution based on the office he holds.

The Kano police spokesperson later claimed the deputy governor was not arrested and was only rescued from the mob.

  • AAU suspends ASUU chairman over alleged sexual assault

Authorities of the Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma have suspended the institution’s chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Prof. Monday Igbafen over alleged sexual harassment.

Prof. Igbafen who is an Associate Professor in the Department of Philosophy was alleged to have been threatening female students with marks for sex.

A press statement signed by the university’s spokesman, Mr. Edward Aihevba, said the suspension followed the arraignment of Prof. Igbafen before the Senior Staff Disciplinary Committee (SSDC) on allegations of gross misconduct bordering on sexual harassment and threat of marks for sex.

Aihevba said Prof. Igbafen has earlier been found culpable and indicted by an investigative panel of the University for the Offence of sexual harassment.

He said a family of a female victim had threatened to drag the institution before the ICPC if it failed to bring Prof. Igbafen to book.

According to the statement, “On receipt of the petition, the university management asked for his comments. His response was found unsatisfactory. He was therefore arraigned before the SSDC.

As due process demands, he has been suspended from the university pending the determination of the allegation leveled against him.

He is therefore not allowed to participate or involved in any university duties or functions except those related to SSDC during the period of his suspension.”

Responding, Prof. Igbafen said he would expose the Vice Chancellor, Professor Ignacious Onimawo, to the world that blackmail does not work within the university.

Prof. Igbafen said the suspension was part of a grand plan to intimidate ASUU chapter of the university.

He said the VC has a personal vendetta against him.

According to him, “It is a grand plot that will fail. The VC is desperate because he has so many things to hide. He is looking for a weak ASUU to manipulate.

That petition was written against two of us when I was a Lecturer II in 2011. I answered it that my hands are clean. Is that why he is denying me of my promotion?

All these things are plot to destabilise the Union. It is a cheap blackmail. The VC is desperate to decimate ASUU. I know he is behind all the petitions against me.

  • DSS arrests former PDP chairman

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kaduna State on Monday said operatives of Directorate of State Services (DSS) have arrested the party’s former chairman, Alhaji Yaro Makama.

The State Publicity Secretary of the party, Abraham Catoh, confirmed the arrest in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kaduna.

The arrest of the former chairman is coming about 72 hours after the Spokesperson of the party’s state campaign council, Ben Bako was arrested over alleged inciting and hate speech during a campaign rally.

Catoh alleged that Makama was invited to the State Police Command, from where he was whisked away to an unknown destination by the DSS operatives.

The party”s spokesman said there were no details as to why he was arrested, but added that, Makama was invited by the security agents for questioning about two weeks ago but was released.

He said there was no information yet about Makama’s whereabouts, adding “they have taken him away a couple of hours ago to an undisclosed location.”

Samuel Aruwan, Senior Special Assistant to Gov. Nasiru El-Rufai, had denied the PDP allegation, saying the security agents did not need the State Government to teach them their statutory responsibility.
