  • Umahi emerges Chairman of South-East Governors’ Forum

Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State has emerged as the Chairman of South-East Governors’ Forum.

Umahi was unanimously endorsed at a meeting of the forum attended by all the governors from the zone in Enugu on Sunday.

Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State, who announced this after a closed door meeting, said that the lot fell on Umahi to lead the group because Abia and Anambra had had their turns in the past.

I want to specially recognise the oldest members of this forum, Governors Rochas Okorocha of Imo and Willie Obiano of Anambra.

We have just risen from a meeting and it is my pleasure to officially introduce the chairman of the South-East Governors’ Forum in the person of Governor Dave Umahi.

He is our chairman today because Anambra and Abia have taken their turns in the past and we are moving forward from Ebonyi flank at this moment,” Ikpeazu said.

Umahi said his election was an honour to lead the forum even though he might not be the most qualified.

I want to thank my brother governors and to accept the leadership position my colleagues have pushed on me.

Not being the most qualified but they decided that I should be the chairman of the forum at a time like this. I want to thank them with all sense of humility,” Umahi said.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that this is the first time after the 2015 general elections that all the governors were meeting face to face at the forums’ meeting.

Some of the governors had in the past delegated their deputies to represent them at the meeting.

Clinton rigged Democratic Party’s chairmanship election – Trump

President Donald Trump has accused his fiercest rival at the Nov. 8 presidential election, Democratic Hillary Clinton, of rigging Saturday’s chairmanship election of the Democratic National Committee (DNC).

Democrats on Saturday elected Clinton’s long-time ally, Mr Tom Perez, as Chairman of DNC.

The election was seen as a proxy battle between Clinton and her arch challenger for the party’s presidential nomination in 2016, Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Trump said on Sunday in his tweets that Clinton rigged out Sen. Bernie Sanders’ candidate, Keith Ellison.

The race for DNC Chairman was, of course, totally ‘rigged’.

Bernie’s guy, like Bernie himself, never had a chance. Clinton demanded Perez!” Trump tweeted.

Trump had, in his congratulatory message to Perez on Saturday, said he “could not be happier for the Republican Party”.

Congratulations to Thomas Perez, who has just been named Chairman of the DNC.

I could not be happier for him, or for the Republican Party!” Trump tweeted.

Perez defeated Minnesota Rep Keith Ellison and four other candidates in a race at a time when the party is facing one of its greatest challenges in serving as a credible opposition and united check to the Republican President Trump.

The election saw Perez receiving 235 votes in the second round of voting, ahead of Sanders’ preferred candidate, Keith Ellison’s 200.

Ellison, had the support of progressives like Sanders as well as more establishment politicians like Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.

In his victory speech, however, Perez announced that he was appointing Ellison the Deputy Chair of the DNC, a move that largely calmed frayed nerves among Ellison’s group.

The move, which was accepted by Ellison, was unanimously supported.

There is no provision for the position of Deputy Chair in the party and there would be an election for the Vice Chairman later.

The election for the new DNC chairman was held following the resignation of former DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, who left the post following the 2016 DNC email leak by WikiLeaks.

Emails leaked by WikiLeaks revealed that Brazile had informed the Clinton campaign of debate questions ahead of time.

It was revealed in the email leak that Schultz showed bias against Sanders’ presidential campaign, and was succeeded as DNC chair by Donna Brazile, who served in an interim role, but ran into controversy as well.

  • Just-In: Appeal Court declares Sheriff Authentic PDP chairman

An Appeal Court sitting in Port Harcourt on Friday declared Senator Ali Modu Sheriff the substantive Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party.

In their rulings, three judges, Justice B.G. Sanga and Justice A.A. Gumel delivered judgement in favour of Senator Ali Modu faction while Justice T.S. Orji-Abadua ruled in favour of the Makarfi-led faction.

At least, four lower courts of concurrent jurisdiction had given conflicting judgements on the controversy surrounding the leadership of PDP, a development landed the matter at the Appeal Court.

In his ruling, Justice Sanga, who gave the lead judgement, said the party did not comply with its constitution in removing the executive of the PDP led by Sheriff.

Sanga maintained that a vote of confidence might be moved on any officer, but a two-month notice should be provided to the secretariat of the party, which would in turn circulate it to all members of the party.

He submitted that the PDP did not comply with the provisions of Article 47(3) of its constitution in the removal of the Sherrif-led working committee, maintaining that the national working committee was not put on notice.

According to him, “A vote of confidence may be moved on any officer, but in doing that, a two-month notice shall be provided to the secretariat of the party, which shall also be circulated.

“The way the (Sheriff) executive on May 21, 2016, showed that the party’s constitution was not complied with.”

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the PDP has been enmeshed in leadership crisis following the inauguration of the Sen Ahmed Makarfi-led National Caretaker Committee in May 2016.

The party had inaugurated the committee following the alleged expiration of the tenure of its embattled factional National Chairman, Sen Ali Modu Sheriff.

However, spokesperson of the Makarfi-led National Caretaker Committee, Dayo Adeyeye in his reaction to the judgement, said ‘it is fight to finish’

  • Plateau State University suspends SSANU Chairman, Secretary

The Plateau State University, Bokkos has suspended the Chairman and Secretary of the varsity’s chapter of the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU), Messrs Timnan Rimdap and Dusu Sambo Yaro.

The suspension letters, dated Jan. 27 and signed by Mr Amos Mallo, the university’s Registrar, indicated that the suspension was for three months during which they would receive only half of their basic salaries.

Timnan is the Head of the ICT unit, while Yaro is in the academic planning unit.

The letters barred them from entering the university’s premises during the period “except with the express permission of the Vice-Chancellor, Registrar or Acting Chief Security Officer”.

The officers were directed to hand over their duties and Identity Cards to the most senior officers in their departments.

A copy of Timnan’s suspension letter indicated that he was fired after management felt dissatisfied with his response to queries bordering on SSANU issues and alleged absence from duty.

The letter accused him of “insubordination, lack of respect to constituted authority and attempting to tarnish the image of the university through falsehood and misrepresentation of facts”.

Sources from the Registry traced the development to the inauguration, on Nov. 23, of the school’s chapter of SSANU, by the union’s national body, and the subsequent request for members’ check-off dues by the Timnan-led interrim executive committee.

The Vice Chancellor declined the request for the dues, and insisted that he would only recognise the body after it had been registered by the school.

Copies of numerous letters, between the management and SSANU, showed that while the former insisted on registering, before recognising every trade union, the later argued that the registration of trade unions was the sole responsibility of the Registrar of Trade Unions.

In one of such letters, SSANU quoted section 3 (1) of the Trade Unions Act 2004, as conferring that privilege only on the office of the Registrar of Trade Unions in the Federal Ministry of Employment, Labour and Productivity.

“The National President of SSANU – a registered trade union – has granted approval for the establishment of a branch thereof in Plateau State University and the recognition of the union by an employer is obligatory,” SSANU argued.

SSANU, therefore, declared that it was “unnecessary and unconstitutional to have another registration with the university”.

But management, in a memo dated Jan. 10, insisted on the registration of all trade unions so as to monitor their activities, and directed unions, intending to operate in the school, to forward a list of officials, constitution and current membership list, for registration with the university.

It followed that up by specifically requesting minutes of the meeting where SSANU members agreed to the 2 per deduction on their salaries as check-off dues, and finally ruled that only individuals could write, granting permission to management, to tamper with their wages.

The university management, meanwhile, frowned at the tone of letters to it, and direct text messages to the Vice Chancellor, which it considered disrespectful, and accused Timnan and the union of using unpalatable language.

Contacted, Prof. Doknan Sheni, the university’s Vice Chancellor, said that the suspension had nothing to do with SSANU or a desire to stiffle the union.

“No one will refuse to pay check-off dues; but we wanted to be sure that he (Timnan) was representing the union and had members’ mandate to deduct the check-off dues.

“We asked him to produce minutes of congress meetings and, specifically, where they agreed that monies be deducted. We also wanted to know if SSANU mandated all the write-ups sent to management.

“Instead of providing the information, Timnan was blackmailing the management and the Vice Chancellor.

“The Registrar of the school is a senior member of SSANU; he has denied ever attending any congress meeting where deductions were endorsed,” Sheni said.

Sheni also accused Timnan of “just disappearing from school without permission”, and described that as a “grievous offence”.

Reacting to his suspension, Timnan expressed shock over management’s action, and wondered why he would be suspended without any prior warning, as stipulated in the university’s conditions of service.

“The law says that one can only be suspended after two warnings; in my case, I have never been given a verbal, much less written warning,” he said.

He said that the suspension was a “gross violation of our rights to freedom of association,” and opined that the intention was to “intimidate members of SSANU”.

“There is nothing in the trade union act that makes it mandatory for the union to submit its minutes to any employer because the union is an independent body, but SSANU has submitted minutes of four congress meetings to the management,” he added.

According to him, the minutes confirmed that members indeed gave their consent to the deduction of dues.

“Such deductions are even a requirement of both SSANU constitution and the trade union act 2004,” he said.

On allegations that he absented himself from duty without permission, Timnan said that he was sick for three days, and later had to write his examinations at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi.

“I applied for annual leave so as to use the time to attend to my health and write the examinations, but the leave was not approved,” he said.

  • EFCC invades OSOPADEC, whisks away chairman, three others

EFCC invades OSOPADEC, whisks away chairman, three others

Officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC on Wednesday invaded the Secretariat of the Ondo State Oil producing Area and Development Commission (OSOPADEC) Oba-Ile, Akure North Local Government whisking away the chairman, Pastor Johnson Ogunyemi and three others.

Other arrested officials include; Dr. Dele Durojaye, Secretary of the commission, Sola Orisamoluwa and the Director of Finance, Vincent Ikuomola.

Officials of the EFCC, who stormed the office around 12pm were said to have locked the main gate leading to the secretariat and headed straight to the office of the chairman.

This was done in order to prevent people moving in or coming out of the office.

The officials of the EFCC however spent about three hours in the offices of the four officials of the commission before leaving with them in a coaster bus and two hilux vans.

It was gathered that the anti-graft commission officials, however, left with some files and documents with the four officers of OSOPADEC.

Workers of the commission were seen gathering in groups discussing the arrest of the principal officers in hush tones.

One of the workers who spoke on condition of anonymity said the arrest of the OSOPADEC officials might not be unconnected with the failure of the commission to pay students bursary in the last two or three years.

He also said the arrest might be traced to the financial mismanagement of the officials of the commission.

However, another staff of the commission linked the arrest of the OSOPADEC officials to a petition by interested stakeholders seeking for explanation on the commission’s spendings in the last eight years.

He said “the Commission had failed to render its financial activities to the public in the last eight years and this might be one of the petitions against the commission before the EFCC,” the staff said.

  • Alleged Corruption: Buhari removes Lawal as committee chairman, appoints Osinbajo

Following alleged involvement in different cases of bribery and corruption and the continuous public outcry for the his probe, President Muhammadu Buhari has removed Secretary to the State Government, Eng. Babachir Lawal as the chairman of a Presidential Committee on the Reconstruction of Federal Government Boards of Parastatals, Agencies and Commissions.

The president has however appointed Vice President Yemi Osinbajo as the chair of the committee, while the chairman of the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agencies (NDLEA) Muhammad Mustapha Abdallah was appointed head of secretariat.

“The SGF is no longer in charge of that responsibility, for obvious reasons,” a source spoke on condition of anonymity said

It was gathered that Abdallah-led team now meets frequently at Wuse II, Abuja, and “s working vigorously and will soon conclude its work after which it will submit its report to Mr President.

President Buhari has begun the search for a new SGF following the indictment of Lawal by the Nigerian Senate.

The upper chamber of the National Assembly accused Lawal of corruption in the award of contracts at the Presidential Initiative on North East (PINE).

Buhari, in his New Year message, noted that his “government is aware of some mistakes and wrongdoings in handling the affairs of IDPs. We are taking measures to correct those mistakes and punish the culprits”.

Recall that Buhari in October, 2015 constituted an eight-member committee, headed by Babachir, to compile names of prospective appointees into federal government boards, parastatals and agencies.

Members of the committee included Alhaji Mai Mala Buni (northeast), Alhaji Zakari Ede (northcentral), Alhaji Inuwa Abdulkadir (northwest), Chief Hillard Etagbo Eta (south-south), Chief Pius Akinyelure (southwest), Chief Emmanuel Eneukwe (southeast) and Mr. Gideon Sammani, a senior special assistant to the president as secretary.

The committee, however, had disagreements over certain issues in November.

Buhari, in a response, directed Osinbajo to meet stakeholders including the Senate President Bukola Saraki, House of Representatives Speaker, Yakubu Dogara, Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) Chairman Abdulaziz Yari, APC Governors Forum Chairman Rochas Okorocha and representatives of the governors in each of the six geopolitical zones.

The governors nominated were: Jibrilla Bindow (northeast), Atiku Bagudu (northwest), Simon Lalong (northcentral), Rochas Okorocha (southeast), Adams Oshiomhole (south-south), and Akinwumi Ambode (southwest).

They committee swung into action and reviewed names of the prospective appointees collated by the SGF from the 36 states and FCT which was reportedly done without recourse to governors and other stakeholders of the APC.

The SGF was accused of not treating the issue of board appointments with levity.

He allegedly failed to carry members of the APC Presidential Campaign Council along while refusing to consult governors, a development that set them against Buhari.

President Buhari is expected to make appointments into no fewer than 500 parastatals this year (2017).
