Just In: PDP suspends chairman, deputy

Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has ratified the suspension of its Chairman, Pastor Philip Aivoji and his deputy, Mr Tai Benedict, pending the outcome of court cases.

Aivoji and Benedict were suspended respectively by their ward executives on April 14 over an alleged gross violation of the party’s Constitution.

The party’s Publicity Secretary in Lagos State, Alhaji Hakeem Amode, stated on Tuesday in Lagos that the State Working Committee reached the resolution after appraising the outcome of 2023 general elections.

He stated that at a meeting held on Tuesday, the committee deliberated on saving the soul of the main opposition party in the state.

He added that the committee consequently confirmed Lagos PDP Vice-Chairman (West Senatorial District), Chief Sunday Olaifa, as acting chairman, pending the outcome of court cases.

He stated also that the committee settled for Olaifa being the vice-chairman from the suspended chairman’s senatorial district.

Amode stated that the committee also constituted a seven-man disciplinary committee to look into all matters affecting the suspended officials.

Members of the disciplinary committee are Chief Abayomi Kuye (Chairman), Mrs Esther Egbi (Secretary), Alhaji Isiaka Shodiya, Princess M.A Coker, Messrs Kayode Ariwayo, Femi Oluokun and Segun Oriyomi.

Amode added that the post-election disciplinary committee was expected to revert to the State Working Committee one week from the date of its constitution.

Members of the State Working Committee at the meeting were Olaifa, Mr Agboola Akinpelu (Youth Leader), Mr Ismail Olatunji (State Auditor) and Mr Adio Salami (State Organising Secretary) and Amode.

“The five members in attendance constitute the majority of the nine members in the State Working Committee out of the original 14 members that can take the decision.

“Three of the original 14 members had decamped to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), thereby reducing the membership of the State Working Committee to 11.

“The embattled chairman and his deputy were part of the 11 remaining members and since they can’t adjudicate in their own case, only nine members were left to take decisions.

Some Lagos PDP leaders abandoned the party’s governorship candidate, Dr Abdul-Azeez Adediran, on the eve of the March 18 gubernatorial election to support either the Labour Party (LP) or the ruling APC.

The development was believed to have contributed to Adediran coming a distant third behind the winner, Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of APC and the first runner up, Mr Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour of the LP.

Crisis is also rocking PDP at the national level with the suspension of its national chairman, Dr Iyorchia Ayu, shortly after the Feb. 25 and March 18 general elections.

Guber Polls: Hoodlums kill Ebonyi PDP chair, Peter Nweke

Peter Nweke the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Ezza North Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, has given up the ghost.

Nweke died after sustaining injuries from an attack by hoodlums suspected to be political thugs of opposition during the Gubernatorial and Assembly elections on Saturday.

Onome Onovwakpoyeya, the Police spokesperson in Ebonyi, confirmed the death of Nweke on Sunday.

According to Onovwakpoyeya, Nweke was beaten up and rushed to the hospital unconscious where he was later pronounced dead by a doctor.

She further disclosed that the Police has launched an investigation into incidents leading up to the party Chieftain’s death, with a view to arresting and prosecuting those responsible.

  • SAD! APC National Welfare Officer is dead

SAD! APC National Welfare Officer is dead

The National Welfare Secretary of the All Progressives Congress and a member of the National Working Committee, Friday Nwosu is dead.

Nwosu, a chieftain of the party, once contested Abia State governorship election on the platform of Peoples Democratic Party before defecting to the ruling APC.

The late legal icon was said to have been admitted in an undisclosed health facility in the Federal Capital Territory before he was discharged on Wednesday.

Nwosu reportedly went back to the same hospital for a routine check up on Thursday where a source confirmed that he relapsed and had to be rushed into the intensive care unit where he gave up the ghost.

“His death has jolted all the NWC members including the National Chairman of the APC, Abdullahi Adamu. I am sure the secretariat will release an official report tomorrow morning(today),” the source said.

As of the time of filing this report, his remains had been deposited at the mortuary.

Effort to reach the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Felix Morka, for reaction proved abortive.

However, the demise of the national welfare officer was reported via the official Twitter handle of the APC at about 8.20 pm on Thursday.

The statement read, “RIP SIR F.N. NWOSU. Words are not enough to describe the monumental loss brought by the passing of the party’s National Welfare Secretary, Sir Friday Nwosu, on the APC family. May his soul rest in peace.”

Nwosu’s last official assignment before the presidential and National Assembly elections was a press conference he held on February 10 where he appealed to former Minister of State for Mines and Steel Development, Uche Ogah, and other disgruntled stakeholders to reconcile with Abia governorship candidate, Ikechi Emenike, to wrestle the state from the Peoples Democratic Party.

Ogah, who was also a governorship aspirant, had challenged the judgment of the Court of Appeal in Abuja which upturned his candidature.

Delivering judgment on Ogah’s appeal, a five-member panel of the Supreme Court, in a unanimous decision delivered by Tijanni Abubakar, held that the former minister’s appeal was devoid of merit.

The judgment has brought a bad blood between Ogah and Emenike’s supporters, a situation the ruling party feared could make them lose the governorship election in the state.

Addressing journalists, the APC National Welfare Secretary, Nwosu, appealed to the warring parties to sheath their sword and work for the victory of the party in the state.

This was even as he begged Ogah to collapse his political structure and work together for Emenike.

  • INEC should be headed by an engineer – NSE

INEC should be headed by an engineer – NSE

The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) has called on government to ensure that the person to head the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should be an engineer if the country must achieve sustainable development.

Mr Tasiu Gidari-Wudil, President of NSE said this on Saturday at a news conference organised by the society for the commemoration of the World Engineering Day (WED) in Abuja.

The theme of the 2023 World Engineering Day is “Engineering Innovations for a More Resilient World”.

In  2020, March 4, was officially designated as the World Engineering Day (WED) for Sustainable Development.

The date was approved by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) as a special international day to celebrate Engineers and the works of Engineering every year.

Gidari-Wudil speaking at the occasion said if the Government would strive the person who should head  INEC as its chairman should be an engineer.

“70 per cent of the operations of INEC is logistics, that is industrial engineering, the operations; election now is ICT based, technology based, so if you are going to bring a professor of political science or history most of the questions in this field he cannot answer.

“But if you bring an engineer he will use his experience, am sure most of the commissioners are not engineers, so when you talking of logistics and tracing, I can tell you if you put an engineer he will be geo-tagging every ballot box.

“So, if really government is ready to solve problems let them put square pegs in square holes, there are more than 40 fields of engineering, so if you want things to work don’t be afraid to put the right professionals in the right places.

“What we are saying is that the in-coming government should be mindful of this if they want to develop this country. In every political party there are engineers. People with the right competences should put in places,” Gadari-Wudil said.

Recall that at the recently concluded 2023 Presidential and National Assembly Elections, many of the challenges that faced the commission was due to the late arrival of sensitive materials and INEC personnel coupled with failure of the BIVAS machine.

The NSE president also used the occasion to call for full implementation of the Presidential Executive Order 5, which according to him, certain critical sections of the Executive Order are not being fully implemented.

Speaking on the recent building collapse in Gwarimpa, FCT, he said there was an urgent need to establish responsible Building Engineering Practice and Governance.

“The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) views with severe dismay and as a national disgrace, the recent collapse of a 3-storey building on 6th Avenue, Gwarimpa District, Abuja.

“This unfortunate incidence is the latest in the unmitigated trends of shameful and avoidable building collapse incidences across Nigeria, which have resulted in humongous deaths and maiming of innocent Nigerians.

“These disasters are outcomes of ineffective compliance, breakdown of regulatory control, official negligence and failure to stamp out building design and construction incompetence and quackery.

“It is the NSE’s well-considered view that henceforth, a determined precedence should be set for deterrence and as part of the healing balm for victims of this disaster by fully implementing the reports of the investigations.”

Gadari-Wudil speaking further, said NSE was spear-heading the adaptation of curricula and teaching methods to ensure that engineering professionals and students are innovative, and developing skills.

He added that training programmes were being created and developed to up-skill and re-skill NSE members to meet the demands of the 4th Industrial Revolution (4IR).

The news conference also  witnessed the inauguration of the new President of the Nigerian University Engineering Students Association, and a tour of a mini exhibition of products of indigenous innovations by engineers.

One of such products was the Hybrid Solar Power Trainer designed and constructed by engineers in National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI).

    The objectives of WED include  creating awareness about the World Engineering Day as an important international day for achieving sustainable development by governments, civil society, industry, and the public;

To increase awareness of Engineering, its impact on modern life, and that it is crucial to advance the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) among other objectives.
