    Senate confirms ex-IG Arase as Chairman, Police Service Commission

    The Senate on Wednesday plenary confirmed President Muhammadu Buhari’s nomination of Mr. Solomon Arase as Chairman, Police Service Commission (PSC).

    Arase’s confirmation was a sequel to the consideration of a report by the Committee on Police Affairs.

    Chairman of the Committee, Sen.Jika Halliru (APC-Bauchi) presented the report.

    Haillu said Arases’ nomination was in accordance with section 154, sub-section 1 of the 1999 constitution.

    According to him, section two A and B of the Police Service Commission Establishment Act 2001, also required the President to nominate Nigerians of proven integrity as members of PSC.

    He said findings from the screening by the committee showed that Arase meets the necessary legal requirements and is affirmed by the committee to be proper person to be appointed as Chairman of PSC.

    He said the committee was satisfied and impressed on how the nominee competently answered all questions posed to him.

    Hilliru said that given qualifications and relevant experience, gained by Arase over the years, the committee recommends that the senate confirm his appointment as Chairman of PSC.

    Sen. Ajayi Borofice,(APC-Ondo), who made glowing remark on the robust academic profile and career of the nominee, described his nomination as a “round peg in round whole”.

    He said his eventual appointment would be to the benefit of the PSC as he has served in various capacities in the Nigerian police service.

    Sen.Mathew Urhoghide (PDP-Edo) commended the committee for screening of the nominee, while also commending President Muhammadu Buhari for the nomination of Arase.

    He urged the senate to expeditiously confirm the nominee given its pedigree for excellence.

    The chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo South Senatorial District, Olugbade Ojelabi is dead, aged 59.

    He died in the early hours of Monday.

    The Speaker, Oyo State House of Assembly, Adebo Ogundoyin who confirmed the death in a statement, said the news of the death is devastating and a great loss to Eruwa town.

    “This is distressing and shocking to me personally. It is a great loss to Eruwa town, Ibarapaland and our party in Oyo State.

    “I am short of words as everything seems like a dream. He was at a stakeholders meeting we held yesterday (Sunday) in Eruwa and did not show any signs of fatigue or ailment. He was active and his contributions to the meeting as usual were constructive and acutely insightful. His death is no doubt devastating.

    “I lost a kinsman as we both hail from Ward 2 in Anko, Eruwa. He was a father figure to me, a political leader and tutor and a motivator whose political experience cannot be underestimated. This is sad. Death dealt his deadly blow on us at this auspicious time when the political experience and astuteness of Hon Olugbade Ojelabi was most needed”.

    The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) says it has recovered over N117 billion between January and August 2022.

    The ICPC Chairman, Prof. Bolaji Owasanoye, made the disclosure during the commission’s defense of the 2023 budget proposal before the House of Representatives’ Committee on Anti-Corruption and Appropriation in Abuja on Thursday.

    While speaking on the 2022 budget performance, Owasanoye gave a breakdown of the recoveries to include N1.413 billion and $225,965 in ICPC/TSA recovery account and N1.264 billion cash through tax intervention.

    According to him, other recoveries include plots of land, completed buildings, vehicles, electronics and jewelries valued at N679.13 million, N2.603 billion, N81.1 million, N1.55 million, and N195,500 million, respectively.

    The ICPC boss added that the commission restrained N49.9 billion through System Study and Review intervention, N6.435 billion cash through budget tracking, N53.91 billion through ICPC advisory, and N614.2 million in other accounts.

    Apart from the recoveries, the Chairman also highlighted other accomplishments of the commission during the 2022 budget cycle to include the completion of 672 investigations as well as 565 non-petition-led investigations, securing of 15 convictions, and 538 projects tracked under Constituency and Executive Projects Tracking Initiative (CEPTI), among others.

    On his part, the chairman of the committee, Hon. Nicholas Shehu, lauded the ICPC Chairman and his board members for providing dynamic and visionary leadership, noting that their leadership style has turned around the fortunes of the commission to a vibrant and viable anti-corruption agency.

    Shehu further enjoined them not to relent but to continue to soar higher

    He, therefore, called on the Federal Government to release the remnant of the commission’s 2022 budget to enable it to accomplish its target.

    The committee chairman also urged ICPC to develop a whistleblowing mobile app so that Nigerians can take advantage of it to report acts of corruption.

    SAD: Delta Council Vice Chairman, Ighedo is dead

    The Vice Chairman of Uvwie Local Government Council in Delta State, Hon. Daniel Ighedo, has died, due to suspected cardiac arrest.

    Ighedo, it was gathered died Tuesday morning from suspected cardiac arrest.

    Multiple sources confirmed the sad development saying it was a big loss to Uvwie Kingdom.

    “Daniel Ighedo was a young promising politician in Uvwie land. He was one of those the kingdom was looking up to in the political development of our land.

    ” He would be greatly missed for his immense and untiring efforts in ensuring peace in Ekpan,” said a prominent leader from the area who craved anonymity.

    As a grassroots politician, Ighedo until his emergence as Vice to the incumbent chairman of Uvwie Local Government Council, Hon. Ramson Onoyake, was the member representing Delta Central in the Delta State Waste Management Board.

    Ighedo who hails from Ekpan community was major backer of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

    Former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Vincent Ogbulafor is dead.

    He died on Thursday night, according to family sources who said on Friday that- ‘‘Dede Ukwu, Hon. Vin. Ogbulafor passed on last night. He died in Canada,’

    Ogbulafor was very influential during his time as PDP boss.

    He became PDP national chairman on March 8, 2008 and started his tenure on a controversial note with his comments, saying he did not worry if Nigeria became a one-party state.

    Committee of Vice-Chancellors gets new chairman

    The Committee of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Federal Universities (CVCNU) has elected the Vice-Chancellor of University of Benin, Prof. Lilian Salami as its chairman.

    This is contained in a statement signed by its Secretary General, Prof. Yakubu Ochefu, in Abuja on Thursday.

    Ochefu said that the new chairman was unanimously elected at its virtual/physical meeting held at its secretariat in Abuja.

    He said that the Vice-Chancellor of Bayero University, Kano, Prof. Sagir Abbas was also elected as the Alternate Chairman.

    Ochefu said that the secretariat wishes the two members of the Executive Board of the Committee success as they take over the mantle of leadership.

    Recall that until the election of Salami, she was the Alternate Chairman to Prof.

    Sulyman Abdulkareem, who will be completing his tenure as the Vice-Chancellor, University of Ilorin on Oct. 15

    With the election, she becomes the second female Vice-Chancellor to head the Committee of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Federal Universities.

    APC executives pass vote of no confidence on Chairman

    The Adamawa State executive committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has passed a vote of no confidence on the state chairman, Alhaji Ibrahim Bilal, over gross misconduct.

    A statement signed by the executives in Yola stated that the action followed the failure of the chairman to respond to some allegations of gross misconduct leveled against him as provided for in the constitution.

    “We, the undersigned members of the state executive committee of the APC in Adamawa have passed a vote of no confidence on the chairman, Alhaji Ibrahim Bilal, over gross misconduct.

    “On the 26 Aug.,  25 members of the state executive committee, issued a formal complaint to three executive officers of the party over constitutional violations which constitute gross misconduct in line with the spirit of fair hearing as provided by the constitution.

    “The persons involved are the chairman of the party, Alhaji Ibrahim Bilal, the secretary, Mr Raymond Chidama and the treasurer,  Alhaji Yahya Hammanjulde.

    “They were given seven-day grace to respond to the allegations which elapsed on Thursday.”

    According to the acting Chairman, Mr Samaíla Tadawus, the secretary and the treasurer acknowledged receipt of the petition and promised to respond soon, while Bilal refused to respond.

    He added, ”there are a plethora of petitions at the secretariat addressed to the chairman, but he hadn’t sat down at the secretariat for a second for over two months making the petitions to remain unaddressed.
    ‘That forced some of the complainants to leave the party.

    “As a result of this gross failure, it was resolved that article 21.5 (vi) of the party’s constitution should be invoked.

    ”This vested in us with the powers to pass a vote of no confidence on him.”

    Reacting,  Bilal debunked his impeachment, saying that he remains the party chairman as only the National Working Committee of the APC, reserves the power to remove an elected chairman of the party.

    “I still remain APC party chairman in Adamawa. This needs to be restated so as not to mislead the uninformed.

    ”Only the National Working Committee, of the APC, reserves the power in a dispute or crisis to remove an elected chairman of the party.

    “Our party guidelines are clear on this issue,” Bilal declared.

    He stated he was  encouraged by the ”outpouring of goodwill from party stakeholders who have said these grave desecration of the rule of law will never be allowed to prevail. ”

    He thanked all APC faithful’s in the state, who have called to express their solidarity to him.

    Bilal added: ”I want to reassure our party stakeholders to disregard the actions of motley crowd, of lies within, acting the script of the opposition to plunge the party into crisis.

    “I want to urge every party member to remain calm as I remain the chairman of the APC in Adamawa.

    ”By Allah’s grace,  I will serve out the remainder of my tenure, and lead  our party to victory, come next year’s general elections.

    Meanwhile, Sen. Ilesha Abbo (APC-Adamawa North), has cautioned stakeholders of the party against instigating crisis in it.

    Mr Abbo, made this known in a statement in Yola on Tuesday. saying, ” the party was heading for victory not internal wranglings.”

    He described the current crisis rocking the party as ”baseless, saddening, unfounded and unfortunate.”

    Abbo, who pledged support to the leadership of the incumbent chairman, stressed the need for unity and understanding within the party.

    “We won’t allow moles to destroy the party and we are solidly behind the leadership of Bilal.

    “As politicians, we should always deploy political solutions to political problems, not envy and hate capable of destroying the party,” he urged. (

    Ahead 2023 General election campaigns the leadership of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has warmed her members against indulging in campaigning for candidates of other political parties under whatever guise.

    The warning which was widely circulated, copy of which was made available to journalists in Awka from the Anambra State chairman of APGA, Sir Nobert Obi, and to all the State working committee members and all the Local government area and Ward chairmen of the party was dated Aug 18, 2022 ref APGA/AN/08/60.

    The chairman said that his attention had been drawn to several unwholesome activities of certain members of the party (APGA) who are campaigning for candidates of other political parties.

    He therefore noted that, “You may wish to know that it is wrong for any member to campaign, solicit votes, or attend any activity organized by other political parties or their candidates other than our great party APGA.

    “Such development is considered anti-party activity and an act of indiscipline in breach of Article 21, General Code of Conduct of our great party.

    “There are several cases of members belonging to WhatsApp, Facebook and other social media platforms that promote and campaign for candidates of other political parties. Not a few even go as far as sharing posts that promote candidates who are not APGA members”, the chairman further pointed out.

    The Chairman emphasized that such action is inimical to the overall interest of APGA which has the intention to sweep the 2023 general elections especially in Anambra’s State where the party has fielded candidates for all the National and State Assembly elections.

    Sir Nobert declared that such activity shall be visited with severe disciplinary action as enunciated in Sec 22 of APGA Constitution.

    Many supporters of the All Progressives Congress APC in Kebbi state have left the party for the Peoples Democratic Party PDP.

    Those who left the APC are mostly from the Kebbi South Senatorial district of the state.
    They include a former Deputy Governor, Alhaji Ibrahim K Aliyu, Alhaji Atiku Alaramma Warra APC Zonal Vice Chairman Kebbi South, and former Secretary to the State Government, Abubakar Ummar among others.

    The defectors said they joined the PDP due to bad governance in the state as there was no development put in place by the present administration

    They promised to work for the party to ensure its success in the 2023 general elections.

    At the PDP headquarters in Birnin Kebbi, defectors from Yauri, Shanga, Ngaski and Danko Wassagu local government areas were received by the PDP state executives.

    Receiving the new members, on Thursday the state PDP Chairman, Alhaji Usman Bello Suru, assured to treat them with fairness and equality.

    At the ceremony, brooms were equally set on fire by the PDP supporters.

    Suspected herdsmen kidnap Edo APC chairman

    Gunmen suspected to be herdsmen have kidnapped Godwin Aigbogun, the chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ugu Ward, Orhionmwon Local Government Area of Edo State.

    It was gathered that Aigbogun, 54, was kidnapped on Monday, July 18, at Ologbo-nugu Community on his way from the farm.

    The assailants were said to have stormed out of the bush and forced the victim’s vehicle to a halt at gunpoint and whisked him away to unknown destination.

    Spokesperson of the command, Jennifer Iwegbu, who confirmed the development said that the police has received a report of the kidnap of the APC chieftain from the former Edo State Publicity Secretary of the party, Comrade Godwin Erhahon of Ologbo-unu village in Orhionmwon LGA.

    Iwegbu said that on receipt of the information, a team of operatives from the command’s cack team, Anti-Kidnapping and Cyber Crime Unit swung into action, mobilised to the scene and embarked on aggressive bush combing with the aim of rescuing the victim unhurt and possible arrest or killing of the suspected kidnappers.

    She added that while the detectives are establishing the location of the kidnappers, the Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, Mr Abutu Yaro enjoined the people to remain calm so that police efforts to rescue the victim and possible arrest of the kidnappers would not be jeopardized.
