Senegal defeat host Algeria on penalties to become CHAN champions

Algeria’s hopes of winning the African Nations Championship (CHAN) on home soil were crushed in heartbreaking fashion as they lost 5-4 on penalties to Senegal in the final on Saturday.

The Local Teranga Lions edged hosts in a very tense final at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Algiers in front of 39,120 spectators on a cold winter night.

Pape Thiaw’s outfit will look back and be proud of their performance on the night that saw them complete the treble for the West African nation in a year that has seen them lift the prestigious Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) as well as the Beach Soccer AFCON.

Both sides seemed tense in the opening minutes of the final that would see a new champion for the continental tournament that is organised for players that feature in their domestic leagues.

The tension escalated as Gabonese referee Pierre Ghislain Atcho dished out four yellow cards in the opening half hour but they both settled in well thereafter and sought to have an edge over their opponents.

Goalless at the half-time mark, both coaches Madjid Bougherra and Pape Thiaw made some changes in the second half and increased their intensity while maintaining a balanced outlook on the night.

Four minutes into the second half, Senegal defender Cheikh Sidibe tried to clear the ball away from Mokhtar Belkhither, but it bounced off him before he commenced a spirited run into the box.

But despite his timely pass to Aimen Mahious, the forward’s effort was off target as well as his resultant attempt from a corner kick.

Senegal came close to an opener in the 56th minute but Diallo’s long-range strike from outside the box went over the bar, much to the frustration of the Senegal bench who were on the edge of their seats.

Mahious made a good run into the box from the middle to pass to Zakaria Draoui and then Belkhither in the box whose shot was blocked by Ousmane Diouf as the Senegalese maintained their shape.

With the game ending goalless after regular time, extratime called for extra focus as both sides continued pressing up front but neither was successful.

In the 99th minute, Mahious played a clean through ball for Abderrahmane Ben Tahar on the left wing with the latter sending a timely high ball for Zinnedine Belaid in the box.

But his header after rising above the Senegalese defence was picked up easily by Pape Mamadou Sy who was well-positioned.

In the 105th minute, Mrezigue had his shot on target saved by the alert Sy who denied him from finding the back of the net. The game eventually went into penalties after both sides failed to score.

Elhadji Mooutarou Balde of Teungueth stepped up first for Senegal and sent his attempt into the lower corner past Alexis Guendouz who guessed right but the power on the ball was too much for him.

Akram Djahnit hesitated before making his attempt and Sy was quick to save it through the middle to find the back of the net, but Sy was off his line.

Djahnit made no mistake with his second attempt, sending it into the left corner to make it 1-1 for the hosts.

Senegal’s Moussa Ndiaye was on point through the middle past Guendouz to give the Teranga Lions a 2-1 lead before Draoui equalized with a nicely taken low shot into the right corner sending Sy the wrong way.

Moussa Kante made way to the penalty spot and as he prepared his attempt, Guendouz psyched himself up in the box.

But despite going the right way, Kante’s powerful shot was too high for him to save. Senegal took a 3-2 lead.

Soufiane Bayazid equalized for Algeria 3-3 with a powerful shot and his animated celebration was enough to show what this meant for him and his tense teammates in the center of the field.

Cheikhou Omar Ndiaye hit the crossbar to send Guendouz into celebration as he made way for Sy who went the wrong way as Youcef Laouafi sent his shot into the right corner to give Algeria a 4-3 lead.

Senegal’s poster boy Lamine Camara was calm on the assignment as his shot in the left corner sent Guendouz the wrong way to make it 4-4.

Mahious, who had scored five of Algeria’s nine goals at the tournament, stepped up with confidence and tried the Panenka but his attempt through the middle was picked up easily by Sy.

The Teranga Lions held their breaths as Ousmane Diouf found the back of the net via a sneaky shot past Guendouz who had dived into the right direction to make it 5-4 for Senegal.

The pressure was now on Algeria.

Ahmed Kendouci visibly felt it and when he missed his chance to equalize, it was tears for the home side while Senegal ran into the pitch in animated celebration of the country’s first ever CHAN title.

Meanwhile, Algeria set a new tournament record by not conceding in six games at the tournament in regular time. The final was the first game to go into extra time.

  • Diallo magic sends Senegal into CHAN final

Diallo magic sends Senegal into CHAN final

Papa Diallo scored the lone goal as Senegal edged Madagascar 1-0 to book a place in the final of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2022 in Algiers on Tuesday night.

Diallo connected to a Mamadou Sane pass from the right to net a looping header past the Madagascar goalkeeper, Zakanirina Rakotohasimbola, who had gone off his line to score the tournament’s earliest goal in the fifth minute.

Senegal built on this momentum to control the game on both ends of the pitch as they denied Madagascar any chance of being comfortable with the ball at the Nelson Mandela Stadium.

Moussa Ndiaye, who was in fine form, sent a well-placed pass to Diallo in the box but Rakotohasimbola was in the right place at the right time to deny the Generation Foot forward.

Senegal forward Cheikh Ibra Diouf then found himself in a one-on-one situation against Rakotohasimbola, but the latter was quick to block the attempt to further frustrate Pape Diaw’s side who continued to ask questions of the Malagasy.

Malick Mbaye then stepped forward to beat Avizara Soloniaina and cut into the box and his pass to Diallo was perfect for yet another Senegal goal but Rakotohasimbola who put up a man-of-the-match performance denied him this time.

Madagascar continued to fend off the Senegalese charge in the second half and when Cheikhou Ndiaye got to a lose ball from a corner kick, Soloniaina Rajo Nirina Razafindrabearimihanta commonly known as Berajo cleared.

But his diving header hit the crossbar to save Madagascar the blushes and avoid an own goal.

In the 83rd minute, Diallo beat the Madagascar defence and even though Rakotohasimbola left his line, Diallo’s effort went over the bar.

The Barea whose attacking prowess led by Koloina and Tokinantenaina Olivier Randriatsiferana was questioned on the night as they sought rare scoring opportunities, but their efforts were not enough on the night.

Senegal held on to progress to their first ever CHAN final and they will face the hosts Algeria on Saturday at the same stadium at 1930GMT.

  • CHAN: I doff my hat to my players – Algeria coach, Bougherra

CHAN: I doff my hat to my players – Algeria coach, Bougherra

Algeria’s coach Madjid Bougherra on Sunday expressed his satisfaction with his players’ performance in the group stage of the African Nations Championship 2022 (CHAN) in Algiers.

This was after the Desert Foxes clinched a 100 percent record in the group stage after matches in Group A of the tournament they are hosting were concluded on Saturday.

The hosts sealed their third victory of the tournament at the expense of Mozambique with a slender 1-0 victory on Saturday at Nelson Mandela stadium in Algiers.

“Our players did their best to be in the quarter-finals of the competition and I raise my hat to them.

“We are currently in the quarter-finals and happy because we did not concede any goals in the three matches.

“We played well in the first half against Mozambique but they pressed us in the second and we did well to defend,” said the coach.

“We had opportunities to get into the dangerous areas but we were a bit unlucky with the final finish. It is great that we did not concede goals.

“There are some cases that we must take into account, and there are also things that we must do carefully, and I repeated several things with the players which they are gradually getting right,” he added.

Bougherra also touched on the close relationship he has built with the first team coach, Djamel Belmadi, who has been in attendance at all of Algeria’s matches in Algiers.

“Belmadi is part of our preparations and encourages our players. He has been in contact with us for a long time and I give him some reports regarding the playing system.

“He follows the players closely and the players are happy to have his support. The coach is also a close friend of mine. So, his support is really appreciated.”

Bougherra also defended his players on some of the casual mistakes made in their matches.

“It is true that in the match there are positive and negative things. Against Mozambique we focused on direct play. Everyone looks at football in their own way.

“We must respect our players who do their work and should be saluted. We are ready to listen to criticism, but we must encourage them. I know that our players are under pressure, but they have achieved three victories”.

The coach added he he was happy their next match would still be in Algiers as the support from the locals played a crucial role in their good run at the group stage.

  • CHAN: How Algeria defeated Ethiopia to book quarter-final ticket

CHAN: How Algeria defeated Ethiopia to book quarter-final ticket

Algeria cemented their Group A lead after registering their second win of the TotalEnergies African Nations Champions with a hard fought 1-0 triumph over Ethiopia at sold-out Nelson Mandela Stadium in Algiers on Tuesday evening.

A solitary strike by Aimen Mahious in the second half was enough to see the hosts march on in the competition and effectively book a place in the knockout stages of the competition.

As expected, Algeria wasted no time in asserting themselves against the East Africans, who came into the clash with their heads held high following their resilient display in their opening match against Mozambique over the weekend.

While Algeria had most of the possession in the opening minutes, they could not do much to hurt Ethiopia, who did well to keep them at bay and away from the dangerous positions.

As a result, the hosts were forced to ask questions of the keeper from a distance, with the first attempt being a stinging effort by Ahmed Kendouci, who fired from a distance but found an equally alert Farid Chaal, who did well to make the save in the 21st minute.

Ethiopia almost stunned the home crowd after Chernet Beshah let fly from the edge of the box but couldn’t get enough curl on his strike that went inches wide of goal in the 25th minute.

With just seconds left to the end of the opening half, Kendouci almost found the opener after his close range header from a Mezieane Tahar cross was saved by the alert Chaal.

Coming into the second half, Algeria continued where they left off with their high pressing game and eventually broke the deadlock after a well taken corner was flicked by Chouhaib Keddad to find Aimen Mahious, who showed great improvisation to control the ball and fire home in the 52nd minute.

Mahious almost doubled his tally in the 67th minute after connecting with a brilliant cross from Zineddine Belaid but saw his effort go agonisingly wide off goal.

Chaal had to come to the rescue yet again in the 77th minute after his defence allowed Tahar some space on the edge of the box, who’s fierce shot had to be parried to safety by the keeper.

Kenean Maleko could have secured a late for his side after squandering a golden opportunity with just the keeper at his mercy following and fired straight at Fasil Welderebriel who did well to make the save and secure the victory for the hosts.

Algeria will wrap up their Group matches with a tie against a high in confidence Mozambique side who overcame Libya in the earlier fixture while Ethiopia will look to win in the final group match against a wounded Libya side who sit at the bottom of the group.

  • CHAN 2023: Five major talking points of the tournament

CHAN 2023: Five major talking points of the tournament

CHAN 2023 will get underway today in the North African nation of Algeria, with the host nation scheduled to slug it out with neighbour Algeria at the Algiers international stadium in the country’s capital.

TheNewsGuru brings you five talking points of the 2023 edition of the tournament

    ALGERIA  2023

Championnat d’Afrique des Nations (CHAN) is a CAF tournament organized yearly to promote the continent’s domestic league and by African-basedican based players.

The purpose is to organize an international competittion for African players who ply their trade in their own domestic leagues..

That means, for example, that Nigeria  can’t solicit the services of Victor Osimhen and Senegal won’t be able to call upon Chelsea’s Goalkeeper Edourd Mendy.

    CHAN 2022 POSTPONED TO 2023

You might be wondering why the 2022 CHAN is being played in January 2023.

Algeria 2022 was meant to hold last year but the tournament suffered postponement due to backlog in the international football calendar, with the CHAN being pushed back six month as a result.

Algiers’ Nelson Mandela stadium seats 40,784 and will host several important matches during the competition including the opening match and the final on 4 February.

It’s the first major football continental tournament held in Algeria in a long while and it’s long overdue.

This is the seventh edition but Algeria’s first time hosting. The country is unveiling a brand new football-specific stadium to mark the occasion.

GHANA AGAIN QUALIFIED AHEAD OF NIGERIA

After qualifying for the FIFA Men’s world Cup at Nigeria’s expense Ghana again qualified ahead of Nigeria for the 2022 tournament starting today in Algeria.

Despite a dramatic fight back from the home-based Super Eagles of Nigeria, it was not to be as the Salisu Yusuf-led side lost on penalties to the Black Galaxies of Ghana and miss out on qualification for the 2022 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN).

Ghana defeated Nigeria 5-4 on penalties in the second leg of their second round qualifying tie at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja after playing a 2-2 draw.

    WHY MORROCO PULLED OUT

Morocco are the two-time defending champions, but the North Africans will not participate at the tournament in Algeria over political row with the host nation.

Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) decided to withdraw – just one day before the opening ceremony.

Relations between Morocco and Algeria have been strained for many decades – due largely to the twists and turns of several different disputes over territory – but in August 2021, when Algeria broke off diplomatic ties entirely, it also closed its airspace to Moroccan aircraft.

Last month, on 27 December, FRMF president and budget minister delegate Fouzi Lekjaa announced that unless the team could land directly in host city Constantine, where they would be playing their matches, on board a Royal Air Maroc flight, the Atlas Lions would pull out.

A stand-off ensued, with neither nation willing to budge. Caf also remained silent on the issue, which eventually worsened the crisis.

It was the FRMF who finally broke cover on 12 January, releasing a statement that said: “The Moroccan national team is unable to travel to Constantine (Algeria) to play the 7th edition of the African Nations Championship and defend its title insofar as the final authorisation of the Royal Air Maroc (RAM) flight, official carrier of the Moroccan football team, from Rabat to Constantine has not been confirmed.”

The ramifications of the withdrawal are yet to be announced but Caf’s rulebook seems to suggest Morocco could be banned from the next CHAN.

    UGANDAN AND LIBYA TOO

Uganda and Libya also threatened to withdraw from the 2023 edition of  CHAN with a few days to go although not for political and legal reasons, their own excuse was largely financial reasons  but their respective issues were resolved and the rest of the teams are expected to compete.

After increasing the number of participating teams to 18 the withdrawal of Morocco at the dying minute has again altered the formation and the settings of the tournament.

Now, CAF is expected to rejig its format in the tournament to give room for a smooth process in the tournament.

  • Morocco withdraw from CHAN, blame Algeria

Morocco withdraw from CHAN, blame Algeria

Morocco will not take part in the 2022 African Nations Championship (CHAN) being held in Algeria, the Moroccan football federation said on Thursday.

This was after the Algerian government rejected Morocco’s request for the team to fly there directly on Morocco’s national airline.

Algeria closed its airspace to Moroccan aircraft in 2021 after it unilaterally severed diplomatic ties with its North African neighbour.

Morocco are the current title-holders of CHAN, which is for players under the age of 23 who still play in African countries.

The tournament starts on Friday and finishes on Feb. 4.

The football authorities in Rabat had written to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to say Morocco would only take part if its team could take a direct flight to Algeria with Royal Air Maroc.

Morocco’s senior national team last month became the first from an African country to reach the World Cup semi-finals, raising the global profile of Moroccan football.

Algeria and Morocco are at odds over a range of issues, including the future of Western Sahara, a territory Morocco regards as its own but where Algeria backs an armed independence movement.

  • Nigeria vs Ghana: It wasn’t easy beating Eagles – Coach

Nigeria vs Ghana: It wasn’t easy beating Eagles – Coach

Bismark Kobby-Mensah, the Assistant Coach of Ghana’s Black Galaxies, on Saturday said his team did not have it easy beating Nigeria to qualify for the 2022 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

Nigeria’s Super Eagles team B failed to qualify for the 2022 CHAN after losing 4-5 to Ghana via a penalty kicks shootout. The CHAN qualifying final round second leg match played at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja saw Nigeria scoring two goals to level 2-2 on goals aggregate.

Ghana won the first leg in Cape Coast 2-0 on Sunday, and opted for a contain-and-counter strategy in Abuja. However, two well-taken second half goals by Muhammed Zulkifilu and Chijioke Akuneto drew the fixture level and meant the lottery of penalty kicks would decide the winners.

Substitute Maurice Chukwu saw his penalty kick (Nigera’s third) hit the crossbar in the shootout to hand Ghana the ticket to January’s 7th CHAN finals in Algeria.

Kobby-Mensah who spoke to newsmen during a post-match conference expressed joy at his team’s victory, admitting however that it was a very difficult match against Nigeria.

“It’s a great feeling because for some years now we have not been able to qualify. Coming here and playing against Nigeria, even though we took a good lead from the first leg, which was not a commanding one, wasn’t easy. This is because we know Nigeria are a very good side.

“So, coming here we knew it was always going to be difficult and it was indeed a pulsating encounter. However, I think that we gave some easy goals away. But at the end of the day, we just wanted to qualify and we have done just that and we are all happy,” he said.

The coach recalled that the team’s head coach Annor Walker had predicted prior to the second leg encounter that it was going to be difficult for Nigeria to turn things around. He noted that their strategy was to defend very deep and catch the Super Eagles on the counter.

“Yes, we defended well and struggled at the latter stages of the game. But, at the end of the day, we wanted to qualify and we have done that. Football is like that sometimes, but what is important is the end result. The end result in this case is that Ghana have taken their place in Algeria,” Kobby-Mensah said.

Also, Gladson Awako, the Ghanaian team’s captain, noted that it was not easy right from the onset and throughout the preparation period, adding that his team really deserved to qualify.

“I believe we really worked hard for this and deserve to be in the 2022 CHAN tournament. It’s been eight years now that we have not been able to qualify for this particular tournament. But we spoke to ourselves as a group and promised to work on our mentality and go ahead to change the narrative.

“We worked so hard and I think we have achieved what we planned. I am very happy to be leading this victorious team. It’s not about me alone, but it is a teamwork. We did this together with the technical crew, the management, as well as our football federation,” he said.

  • Nigeria vs Ghana: Eagles coach, Salisu Yusuf shuns post-match conference

Nigeria vs Ghana: Eagles coach, Salisu Yusuf shuns post-match conference

Super Eagles B team Coach Salisu Yusuf on Saturday failed to show up for the usual post-match news conference at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.

This followed the Eagles’ loss to Ghana’s Black Galaxies in an African Nations Championship (CHAN) second leg qualifier in Abuja.

Nigeria’s Super Eagles B team were on Saturday knocked out of the 2022 CHAN qualifying race after losing 4-5 to Ghana via penalty shootout.

The CHAN qualifier second leg match, played at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium Abuja, saw the hard-fighting Eagles score two unreplied goals to level goal aggregate at 2-2.

Ghana had won the first leg in Cape Coast 2-0 on Sunday, and opted for a contain-and-counter strategy in Abuja.

However, two well-taken second half goals by Muhammed Zulkifilu and Chijioke Akuneto drew the fixture level and meant the lottery of penalties would decide the winner.

Unfortunately, substitute Morice Chukwu saw his penalty kick (Nigera’s third) hit the crossbar in the shootout to hand Ghana the ticket to next year’s 7th CHAN finals.

Immediately after match, the newsmen present headed for the Media Centre for the post-match conference and spoke to the Ghanaian coach and the team’s captain who were the first to show up.

Afterwards, it was the turn of Coach Yusuf and his team captain but unfortunately, they refused to show up
as stakeholders waited endlessly at the center to no avail.

It was later announced that coach Yusuf had stormed out of the stadium in anger immediately after the match.

  • Algeria 2023: Black Galaxies eliminate Nigeria from CHAN race

Algeria 2023: Black Galaxies eliminate Nigeria from CHAN race

The Super Eagles B came pretty close but eventually lost out on penalties after a flaming battle with the Black Galaxies of Ghana ended in penalty shoout-out heartache at the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja on Saturday evening.

Ghana won the first leg in Cape Coast 2-0 courtesy of a penalty kick award early in the second half and a late goal scored on the counter, and opted for a contain-and-counter strategy in Nigeria’s administrative capital. The plan worked for large swathes of an encounter dominated by the Eagles B, but two well-taken second half goals by Muhammed Zulkifilu and Chijioke Akuneto drew the fixture level and meant the lottery of penalties would decide the winner.

Substitute Morice Chukwu crashed his kick, Nigera’s third, against the crossbar in the shootout to hand Ghana the ticket to be at next year’s 7th African Nations Championship finals. He was the only one who failed to score from the spot as Ghana won 5-4.

Nigeria created a hatful of chances in a ferocious first half, but Babatunde Bello’s long-range shots either failed to find target or were punched away by goalkeeper Ibrahim Danladi, and free headers presented to Valentine Odoh and Zulkifilu were wasted.

The introduction of Akuneto in the second half brought more urgency to Nigeria’s game, and the Eagles B shot ahead in the 77th minute after Zulkifilu connected home gloriously from a pull-out.

With the seconds running out, in the fourth minute of time-added-on, Akuneto powered home after a corner kick was flicked into his path by Samuel Amadi.
