Leadership tussles: Probe Nwabunwanne, stakeholders tell Soludo

In recent times, communal crises bothering on Igweship and town union leadership tussles have been rocking various communities in Anambra State.

Some of these included, Ifite-Dunu, Nawfia, Ideani, Azia, Abacha, Oba, Ojoto and many others.

The most notorious is the alleged persistent recognition of and public fraternity by some notable officials of the State government led by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftancy Affairs, Mr Tony Collins Nwabunwanne with the court dethroned traditional ruler of Alor community, Idemili South Council of the State, -Chief Mac-Anthony Elibe Okonkwo.

This is currently rocking the peace and cohesion in the area.

Consequently, Gov Chukwuma Soludo has been called by citizens to investigate and probe the Commissioner as he was accused of having a hand in most of these crises.

He was also alleged to being key participant in their instigating, dating back to when he was an aide to former Gov. Willie Obiano on Chieftaincy and Community Affairs. Hence was presently seen as working at variance with the progress of the State and against the public interest.

The immediate past President General of Alor People’s Convention, Chief Uzoma Igbonwa while responding to a question from journalists on the tense atmosphere in the hitherto peaceful Alor community pointed out that Mac Anthony Okonkwo was formally dethroned vide an Anambra High court judgment of Feb 17, 2022. His motion for stay of execution was declined by the High Court, but surprisingly, he has continued to parade himself/passing off as, dressing as and presenting himself as a traditional ruler of Alor both in private and in public. He refused to heed to the subsisting court judgment that dethroned him and the State Attorney-General’s recent advice and legal opinion notwithstanding. However, it was doubtful if the initial certificate of Recognition issued to him has been formally withdrawn, little wonder he was going around town parading as a monarch.

It would be recalled that Alor is the country home of the former governor of the State and immediate past Minister of Labour/Employment, Senator Chris Ngige.

This unwholesome situations, Igbonwa stated, “has elicited tension, confusion, agitations, and restiveness in the community, especially among the youths.

According to the February 17, 2022 court judgment, Okonkwo was ordered to desist thenceforth from parading or presenting himself as a traditional ruler anywhere at all.

It was on the strength of this court verdict and the absence of any other impediment that the community had in 2022 elected and enthroned HRM Igwe Collins Ebelechukwu Chukwumesili as Ezediohamma 111of Alor, Igbonwa added.

Instructively, he pointed out that, “Igwe Chukwumesili was chosen from Uruezeana village in Ifite Section, the rightful and appropriate area whose turn it was to present the new Igwe, as was copiously outlined in the operational Constitution of Alor and consistent with the judgment of the High Court.”

Chief Mac-Anthony Okonkwo’s surprising illegitimate and unfortunate emergence had remained tenuous and troubled because he hail from the last and youngest Umuokwu Village of Ifite Section of Alor. It was actually a journey to nowhere which had brought nothing apart from darkness, gloom and crises to Alor since he bulldozed his way and fouled the Chieftancy selection arena, when he knows that his Umuokwu village was not in reckoning as far as the Alor Igweship stool was concerned presently, until it gets to her turn in many generations to come.

When contacted, one of the old and experienced Ichies, Ichie Ifeanyi Obiazi (Ichie Idee 111 of Alor) bemoaned “the ugly situation Okonkwo had brought upon a once sure-footed progressive Alor community.”

Referring our Correspondent to copy of the verdict of court that removed him, Ichie Obiazi expressed shock that he was still clinging to his traditional rulership claim and illusion.

Throwing more light to the conundrum, Ichie Obiazi rhetorically asked, have you ever seen it anywhere in global history where anyone mounted the throne while his father is alive. Would he be breaking kola nut for and or in the presence of his own father, as the traditional ruler? That will be opprobrious.

Mac Anthony Okonkwo’s father is very much alive and strong. It’s even under his father’s roof that his son, Mac-Anthony, is still living and carrying on as “Igwe” while the folly lasted.

In all these community crises, our investigations disclosed that it’s people of Nwabunwanne’s ilk that provided the offensive manure that nourishes such festering malady all over the state.

However, apparently reacting to the legal counsel of the State’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Okonkwo, through one Emeka Ikegwuogu as his spokesman, at a press conference in Awka at the weekend insisted that he “remains the authentic traditional ruler of Alor”.

More so, in a letter to the immediate past President General of Alor(Igbonwa), dated August 22,2023, the State’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice had cautioned Okonkwo and those prodding him on to be guided by the court verdict in Suit HID/354/2019, save and until contrary is established. “In the interim, Mac-Anthony Chinedu Elibe Okonkwo is not the Igwe of Alor, and he must stop disturbing the peace of Alor community with his childish behaviour. No reasonable Alor man or woman pays Mac-Anthony any attention. For him, Alor Igweship stool is a business venture and he must not rule Alor people by force”.

The State’s Chief law officer also pointed out that, “Having been satisfied that the judgment and orders delivered in the suit are the extant and subsisting orders of the court between the parties and on the same subject matter, save and until the contrary is established, Mr Mac Anthony Chinedu Okonkwo should not conduct or superintendent over the new yam festival scheduled on Saturday, August 5, 2023 in the purported capacity of traditional ruler of Alor town is unlawful and against the public peace of the town, therefore he is restrained from doing so to avoid total breakdown of law and order in the community.”

It needs highlighting here too that Alor community cannot in anyway be seen as inconsequential, having produced a State Governor, Senator, Ministers, incumbent Clerk of the Senate, Senior Advocates of Nigeria, Judges, Magistrates, and top business moguls in different areas of discipline, members of the State Assembly and different top government appointees at the Federal and State levels.

Prof. Elo Onyeka, a respectable indigene of Alor, wondered why none of the distinguished well-read citizens was in the motley crowd of Okonkwo’s praise singing press conference.

While blaming these communal crises on Nwabunwanne who was alleged to be sitting on most official letters concerning these communities and Chieftancy issues, Chief Max Oruche from Ifite-Dunu community accused Mr. Nwabunwanne of being too young, inexperienced and immature for the office he occupies, and evidently not sound in the general customs and tradition of most communities in the State and/or working against Gov. Soludo’s vision for democracy to thrive in Anambra communities.

Nwabunwanne in reaction to the leadership/rulership crises ravaging the State, especially as he was accused of instigating some blamed those who never liked his rising profile and face. But vowed to overcome all their antics and come out without any blemish.

Records revealed that while trying to paper the heavily cracked walls of the traditional rulership/community leadership mess he allegedly actively participated in during the immediate past administration of Chief Willie Obiano, -Nwabunwanne was visibly attacking Soludo’s efforts and the hope for reelection later 2024, as he is creating enemies for Gov. Soludo.

This should be a wake up call for the governor to x-ray Nwabunwanne’s activities and some other officials who have become heavy baggage to the administration.

Minimum wage: Nigeria workers living in denial – Gov. Soludo

Anambra Governor, Prof. Charles Soludo, said that the N30,000 national minimum wage for Nigerian workers is grossly insufficient to sustain the average worker and his family.

Soludo stated this while addressing the state workers during the 2023 May Day celebration held at Dr Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka, on Monday.

According to him, “paying N30,000 national minimum wage to Nigerian workers is subjecting them to living in denial.

“I say this because the amount cannot afford a bag of 50kg rice, let alone other domestic problems staring families on the face on daily basis,” he said.

The governor who was responding to the litany of challenges reeled out by the chairmen of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and his Trade Union Congress (TUC) counterpart, said he recently raised the salaries of workers by 10 per cent to cushion the effects of inflation on workers.

He said that as an expert in economics, he was aware of inflation in our economy which had made workers to be in serious pains given what they earn as salaries.

Soludo used the medium to direct the state workers to end the Monday sit-at-home which he noted was becoming a cheating on government.

“In more than a year now, workers in Anambra and other states in the South-East no longer work on Mondays and this has made it for them to work for 70/80 per cent monthly, while they receive their monies 100 per cent.

“This can no longer continue because it is like it has become a convenient excuse and we must get our state back on track,” he said.

Soludo said, under his watch, any worker who retires must get his or her retirement benefits.

He also assured that he would continue to pay monthly salaries in addition to other projects.

He told the labour leaders that the option available for him to implement the enhanced wages being clamoured for was for the government to reduce the workforce by half.

Soludo who commended the state workers for their commitment appealed to them to do more as he will ensure that they get better welfare once the state revenue increased.

Earlier, Humphrey Nwafor and Chris Ogbonna, both NLC and TUC state chairmen, respectively, had in their separate addresses listed challenges facing workers in the state.

They maintained that wages received by Anambra workers cannot feed them and their families, while appealing that those due for promotions should be promoted.

  • Soludo mourns as Anambra ex-Gov, Mbadinuju dies at 78

Former Governor of Anambra, Dr Chinwoke Mbadinuju, is dead, a family source has announced.

The deceased son, Cheta, said their patriarch died on Saturday at the National Hospital, Abuja at 78.

Cheta announced the death on behalf of the family in a statement issued in Awka and made available to newsmen on Tuesday.

He stated: “With heavy heart, but utmost gratitude to God for a life well spent, we announce the passing of our father, grandfather, uncle, friend and associate, Dr. Chinwoke Mbadinuju, a former governor of Anambra and elder statesman.

“At this trying time, we pray for God’s grace and mercy upon him and those he left behind to mourn him.

“His funeral arrangements will be announced in due course by the family,” Cheta added.

In a reaction, Gov. Chukwuma Soludo commiserated with the deceased family, Uli Community of Ihiala Local Government Area and entire people of Anambra over the loss.

In a statement signed by Christian Aburime, his Press Secretary, Soludo said the late ‘Odera’, as he was fondly called, would be remembered for signing the Law that created the Anambra Vigilance Service, Anambra State University, Uli, among other legacy projects.

He urged the family to ensure it sustained his good legacies and prayed God to grant his soul eternal repose.

Mbadinuju was Anambra’s governor from 1999 to 2003.

  • Gov Soludo asked to reveal details of MoU with EEDC

Gov Soludo asked to reveal details of MoU with EEDC

Onitsha Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (ONICCIMA) has urged Gov. Chukwuma Soludo to explain details of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), on 24 hours power supply in Anambra.

On March 25, Soludo signed an MoU between the state government and Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), to ensure that power supply in the state was available 24 hours a day and seven days a week.

The chamber’s President, Chief Kevin Obieri, called for the clarification in a statement made available to newsmen on Monday.

Obieri stated that the chamber was concerned that there was no detailed information regarding the MoU and its broad implications for the business community in Onitsha and the entire state.

He lamented that there was no information on when the partnership would commence and whether the projections were in a month, a year’s time or towards the end of the administration’s tenure.

“While the chamber continues to support Gov. Soludo’s developmental strides in the state, we strongly feel that the government should do well to sensitise the business community to the MoU.

“Beyond payment of bills by users, are there other cost implications? If any, will the cost be borne by the state or wholly transferred to the public or subsidised?

“If the cost is to be borne by the state, what are the implications to the state’s finances, especially as the nation is currently grappling with record inflation?

“With a struggling economy, businesses trying to stay afloat and people living on a knife’s edge, it will help that people are aware of the full details of the MoU, so that necessary adjustments can be made, ” he said.

Obieri stated that as of March 21, the total National Power Generation was 4,670 megawatts out of which 365 megawatts was assigned to EEDC which provides distribution for the whole of the Southeast.

“The obvious question then is, how feasible is the provision of 24/7 electricity when the allocation to EEDC is quite minute to satisfy the whole of Southeast?

“Even experts have insisted that Southeast requires a minimum of 10,000 megawatts of electricity for a steady power supply.

“More critical is that EEDC is only a distribution company, not a generation company and can only distribute what is released to it by the GENCOS.

“They cannot control or guarantee a 24/7 power supply. These are many questions begging for answers here,” he said.

The Chamber’s President said that a steady electricity supply in Anambra was the single most critical factor to kick-start and galvanize the much publicised industrialisation of the state.

According to him, steady electricity will transform the economic equation of businesses and boost the disposable income of the citizenry while propelling the revenue generation capacity of the state.

“This is why every pronouncement regarding achieving this laudable aim must be well considered while any impediment to the realisation of this objective must be addressed quickly.

“To this end, the business community as well as the general public await to hear a well-articulated process-flow and details of the MoU signed on their behalf to dispell needless speculations and rumours.

“We hope that the state government, through the relevant ministries, will expand its sensitisation and awareness campaign on this critical agreement, “Obieri stated.

  • Soludo’s aide debunks alleged plot to eliminate Peter Obi

Soludo’s aide debunks alleged plot to eliminate Peter Obi

Mr Chris Aburime, the Press Secretary to Anambra Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, says the governor is not after Mr Peter Obi, a former governor in the state and presidential candidate of the Labour Party.

Aburime spoke on Monday in Awka, while reacting to a viral message on social media, which alleged that Soludo had been contracted to eliminate Obi for a fee.

He said that Soludo was the father of Anambra by his position and will not plot or collude to harm any lawful citizen of the state, including Obi.

The message, titled “Hold Soludo Responsible If Anything Happens To Peter Obi,” said Soludo’s hatred for Peter Obi and everything he stands for is becoming glaring as things unfold.

“Yesterday, a Helicopter entered Awka by 1:30am and took Soludo to a secret meeting at Government House, Owerri. The agenda of the meeting is Peter Obi and how to stop him physically, politically and otherwise.

“Soludo was given five million dollars in 100 dollar bills for the hatchet job and Soludo promised to eliminate Peter Obi…,” it said.

But Aburime dismissed the piece as infantile, mischievous, unnecessarily inflammatory and figment of the imagination of the author.

He said Soludo in spite of political leaning was a brother and friend of Peter Obi and would not think of hurting him or any other person for political reasons.

According to him, Soludo is the father of all and he has a good heart towards everybody. I am surprised that people can concoct this type of blackmail against him.

“I want to state categorically that there is no iota of truth in that write up, he did not go to Owerri and he was not offered any sum of money to harm anyone, not even his brother Mr Peter Obi an illustrious son of Anambra.

“Soludo wishes Obi well, he appreciates Anambra voters for supporting him massively, of course, he predicted his victory in Anambra and remember, there was no form of violence or electoral malfeasance in Anambra, that speaks a lot about the peaceful nature of Soludo,” he said.

Aburime said there was no benefit either personal or general for anybody who wished to create animosity between two national human capital assets and great sons Anambra through mischief.

He said the development, protection of lives and property and sustainable progress of Anambra should be the bigger picture occupying the minds of supporters than the personal interest of their supporters.

Aburime called on Anambra electorate to come out en masse on March 11, and vote for candidates of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) for the State House of Assembly the way they supported Obi for stability and progress in Anambra.

Soludo, who expressed his condolences in a statement signed by Mr Christian Aburime, his Press Secretary, said Obiozor was a great diplomat and a solid intellectual in the diplomatic circles

He described the passing on as a big loss to the people of Imo State, Igbo race, the Nigerian nation and the world at large.

Soludo noted that as a professor and diplomat who was the Nigerian Ambassador to the United States at a time, Obiozor truly impacted the world around him as a leader and would therefore be solely missed.

“On behalf of my family, the government and good people of Anambra State, I commiserate with the Obiozor’s family and the government of Imo State over the irreparable loss,” he stated.

The death of Obiozor was announced by Imo State Government on Dec. 28. He died at the age of 80 years.

    Obiozor’s death shocking – Ikpeazu

Ikpeazu made this known in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Onyebuchi Ememanka, and made available to newsmen in Umuahia on Thursday.

He described the octogenarian as “a ranking member of the global academic community”.

He further described him as “a world acclaimed Professor of International Relations and a diplomat of the finest grade”.

The governor said that his death robbed Igbo nation of one of its most illustrious sons.

According to him, the deceased was one of the most powerful men of Igbo extraction at the global diplomatic level.

He maintained that his death had dealt a huge blow on Ndigbo, which is still grappling with issues around leadership and her place in Nigeria.

“Prof. Obiozor would be deeply missed,” he stated.

He added that posterity would judge him favourably, considering that he left indelible footprints on the sands of time.

Also, Prof. Damain Opata, the Chairman of Ohaneze Ndigbo in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State, described Obiozor’s demise as a great loss to South-East and the country.

“I received the death of our national president with shock, surprise and sadness,” Opata said.

He further said that the incident had denied Ndigbo and Nigeria a great leader and global career diplomat.

“The death of Obiozor is not only a great loss to Ndigbo but to the country and world.

“It’s indisputable that the country and the international community will miss the immense intellectual contributions and wise counsels of Obiozor on national and global issues.

The professor emeritus from the Department of English and Literary studies, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, said that Obiozor “would be remembered for his commitment to uniting Nigeria beyond geo-political consideration”.

These were contained in a statement made available to journalists by the governor’s Press Secretary, Christian Aburime, on Saturday.

  • 2023 Presidency: Doyin Okupe lists states Obi will win

2023 Presidency: Doyin Okupe lists states Obi will win

The Director-General of the Peter Obi Presidential Campaign Council, Doyin Okupe  has predicted the number of States his Principal Peter Obi will win in next year’s election.

Okupe reacting to Anambra’s governor’s analysis of the  Labour Party presidential candidate’s stance in 2023 election in the country noted that the LP Candidate will win convincingly in many states.

Okupe noted that Obi will get 25% votes in four states.

Although there are over 15 presidential candidates battling for the Aso Rock hot seat, Peter Obi of LP, Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and not forgetting Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigerian Peoples Party, NNPP, have taken the front row.

Recall that Soludo said that Obi would not win the election but merely playing drama with the contest.

In the scathing assessment of Obi’s presidential ambition, Soludo said that the LP’s flagbearer was just putting the Igbos in a more precarious situation in the country.

However, in his reaction titled ‘Soludo’s ludicrous lies’, Doyin said, “Soludo: ‘Obi will score 25% in 4 States only.’

    “Fact check on candidates: Tinubu will win 6 States of the SW & 3 States in NE;

    “Atiku: win in 6 States of NW & 3 States in NE;

“Obi will win all 5 States of SE, all 6 States of SS, 4 States of NC & 25% in 6 States of SW.”

Soludo’s son Ozonna counters him, says Obi is the best candidate

Anambra state governor’s son, Ozonna Soludo has countered his father by endorsing the candidacy of Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

Ozonna posited that Peter Obi is the best candidate for 2023 election, thereby negating his father’s stance on Obi.

Ozonna, Governor Soludo’s son, said he does not want to be dragged into politics, but prefers Obi to other candidates.

The 28-year-old UK-based artiste made this known via his Facebook page where he criticized his father for opposing Peter Obi.

Earlier governor Soludo had attacked Obi in a write -up where he explained reasons Obi is not the best man for the job.

While also throwing shades at Obi’s claim of making huge savings for Anambra State during his tenure, Soludo also said that governments exist to save lives and not to save money.

Ozonna said Peter Obi is the best candidate despite his father’s stance.

He wrote “I am not an extension of anybody. I have my own opinions and have always said I think Peter is the best candidate. All this has nothing to do with me”.
