  • Days after admitting receiving kickbacks from Buhari’s campaign, Charly Boy retracts self

The convener of “OurMumuDonDo” Movement, Charles Oputa, popularly referred to Charly Boy, has contradicted his earlier statement that he received millions of naira from President Muhammadu Buhari’s campaign team.

Charly Boy in an interview with Oak TV on Tuesday said he could not have used the song where he abused the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to get money from Festus Keyamo (SAN) spokesman of President Buhari’s campaign.

Oputa was accused by the co-convener of the movement, Deji Adeyanju, that while he was in prison for 78 days, the APC through Keyamo gave Charly Boy money.

An audio conversation was released to back Adeyanju’s claim.

Days after the allegation, Charly Boy publicly stated that he received at least N100 million from Buhari campaign as payment for his politically-charged music video that attacked PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar and the APC.

The video was uploaded on YouTube January 25.

However, hours after Charly Boy admitted that he got cash from Buhari’s campaign, Keyamo wrote on Twitter that “I’ve been having some good laugh. Whoever thinks that I would pay a penny for a song by @Areafada1 that disses both the APC and PDP must have his/her head examined.”

If the quarrelling parties want to hurt their egos by bandying phantom figures, they should let me out of it.”

However things took a different twist on Tuesday, when Charly Boy said in an interview that: “For someone to believe that I collected money in nine digits from a politician for a video clip is laughable, because even if I am Davido or Wizkid, who will pay me such amount.

Some persons are bent on denting the brand that I have built over the years, but I am not deterred because the struggle for a better Nigeria must continue, and my mouth cannot be shut.”

Charly Boy said he admitted to collecting the money earlier “to play along and understand if Adeyanju, the person who he called son will believe the rumours”.

  • How Buhari’s campaign N100m ‘bribe’ to Charly Boy is tearing ‘OurMumuDonDo’ movement apart

The social media was last week set in a frenzy when popular activist, Deji Adeyanju accused a co-convener of the ‘OurMumuDonDo’ movement Charles Oputa, popularly called Charly Boy of allegedly receiving a bribe to the tune of N100m from President Muhammadu Buhari’s campaign.

Interestingly the entertainer cum activitist Charly Boy has publicly stated that he received at least N100 million from the Buhari campaign as payment for a politically-charged music video he recorded.

The 67-year-old said Festus Keyamo, a spokesperson for the Buhari campaign, met him privately weeks before the presidential elections, and both discussed license over a music video which Charly Boy had recorded to castigate Atiku Abubakar as an unscrupulous politician who should not be trusted with power.

The entertainer also rehashed Atiku’s alleged crimes in the United States in the video uploaded on YouTube January 25.

However, the former vice president has long maintained he was not wanted in the U.S. and he demonstrated this with his first visit to America in 12 years in January as the strongest repudiation to the allegations.

Charly Boy said Keyamo, a senior lawyer, actually visited him to discuss the arrest of Deji Adeyanju, a senior member of ‘OurMumuDonDo’ who was spending weeks in a Kano prison for alleged murder, only to then hear a “new song that I was working on…where I was dissing Atiku,” Charly Boy said.

I do not care. But if you want to use my work, you pay for it,” Charly Boy recalled telling Keyamo. “Of course, he paid for it. And they paid heavy.”

The statement was extracted from a video of Charly Boy’s interview with online-based Roots TV that was widely shared on social media on Friday.

Charly Boy’s comments struck members of the community organising movement as insensitive and provocative, and they have moved swiftly to ease him out as chairman of the group.

The video surfaced barely a day after an audio leaked online in which Charly Boy was heard seemingly admitting to have received money from Keyamo. The audio was recorded by Adeyanju, but the activist said he did not leak it, even though he had shared with a few persons over the past week.

Consequently, Adeyanju renounced his membership of the ‘OurMumuDonDo’ on March 13, alleging gross misconduct, including a breach of trust, against Charly Boy.

Adeyanju was particularly incensed by Charly Boy’s affair with the Buhari campaign because he believed the administration was behind his ongoing trial for a murder case that had been dispensed 10 years ago.

Recall that the police arrested Adeyanju on December 13, locking him in Kano Central Prison on a controversial magisterial order. He was freed on bail on March 1, after the presidential election had been concluded. The activist strongly believed the police kept him in jail over fears his activism could cost President Muhammadu Buhari at the ballot box.

Initial response to both Adeyanju’s public denunciation of a movement with which he had been prominently identified in recent years and the leaked audio was for the warring parties to immediately reconcile for the sake of their civic group.

As of the time the audio leaked online Wednesday night, the specific amount Charly Boy allegedly received from Keyamo was left to speculation.

But with Charly Boy himself now admitting that the amount was in ‘nine figures’, sources within ‘OurMumuDonDo’ said they expected the controversy to worsen.

Already, Adebayo Raphael, a key official and facilitator of ‘OurMumuDonDo’, said in a statement on Friday night said that Charly Boy has been asked to proceed on suspension pending investigation of the controversies.

The statement accused Charly Boy of not only impugning the “credibility of the OurMumuDonDo Movement but also the myriads of conscientious and genuine activists, rights groups and civil society groups in Nigeria.”

Charly Boy was asked to immediately recuse himself as chairman of the group due to his “amoral and illicit dealings”, failure of which “shall leave us with no other option but to ask members of the public to cease any further dealing and interface with you,” amongst other lawful steps to force compliance.

The group was founded to agitate for a better Nigeria in which citizens can boast of equal dignity. It has held several protests, some of which drew police crackdown.

The group was largely deemed coordinated and united, until an undisclosed but huge financial grant was released to the members by a foreign non-governmental organisation. The money was to bolster civic engagement by the group, but crisis broke out following allegations that Charly Boy was not accountable or transparent in the management of the fund.

Adeyanju had reportedly complained about Charly Boy’s handling of the fund prior to his arrest and extended detention in Kano. This was later cited as the primary reason why Charly Boy did not openly agitate for Adeyanju’s release, and reportedly missed all the protests held by members of the group and other activists to free Adeyanju.

Charly Boy has maintained no wrongdoing in the controversy, and threatened to release details that would indict Adeyanju.

Keyamo who admitted meeting with Charly however maintained that everything that transpired between them was private and in furtherance of their relationship of over 25 years.

How and where the ‘OurMumuDonDo’ controvercy will remains a matter of time and public interest.

In his reaction, Charly Boy congratulated the President, adding that he is not a fan but he gives him accolades because he and his cabal understands the cabal politics of Nigeria.

  • I will lead protest if INEC shifts elections again – CharlyBoy

Maverick activist, Charly Boy, has said that he will lead a peaceful protest to the headquarters of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) if the agency shifts the Presidential and National Assembly elections on Saturday.

Charly Boy said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Abuja.

NAN recalls that Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the INEC Chairman, early on Saturday, Feb 16, announced the postponement of the polls to Feb 23 because of “logistics and operational problems”.

The Commission also shifted the state Governorship and legislative elections as well as Council polls in the Federal Capital Territory from March 2 to March 9.

However, reactions have continued to trail the action of the electoral umpire with many Nigerians, especially political players, calling for the resignation of the chairman.

Charly Boy, the Convener of Ourmumudondo Movement, however, noted that he saw the inability of Nigeria to hold the polls on the scheduled date as ‘an act of God’.

He however warned that any further shift of the elections, especially the presidential poll, would be protested by his group.

“I want to believe that what happened on Saturday is some kind of divine intervention, no matter how much things have become so politicised in our environment.

“However, if there is another postponement, we will go to INEC office to tell us what is happening and whether they are truly independent or not.

“Unless they want to set fire on an already tensed situation in the country, I see no reason why INEC should postpone the elections again.

“Nigerian politicians are very desperate to get and hold unto power and it is part of my nationalistic engagement to speak against mindless political criminality in the polity, “he said.

Charly Boy urged Nigerians, especially the youth, to come out and vote for leaders of their choice in all the elections.

The 68 -year-old activist, who described himself as the ‘President of all frustrated Nigerians’, however, expressed disappointment that the youth failed to rally support for young candidates to realise the “Not Too Young To Run” dream.

He explained that they had earlier initiated the Presidential Aspirants Coming Together, a coalition of young Nigerians vying for office of president, to produce and rally support for one candidate.

“It is my duty to encourage every young Nigerian to come together to form a formidable front to enable them take power from the recycled leaders.

“It is a bit sad that we could not realise that this time around but I urge people to vote who they like because that will form the basis of how we transit in 2023.

“ APC and PDP are like the devil and the deep blue sea and I do not want any youth to vote for them, whether one is lesser evil or not, evil is evil.

“With that, we would know who are popular candidates among the young breed and we shall know and keep records of the number of votes they can muster,” he said.

Charly Boy stressed that young people needed to achieve a paradigm shift in Nigeria’s political history and urged them to be united in common struggle for a better Nigeria.

He lamented that Nigerian youths were being deprived of opportunities in the midst of plenty because of bad leadership over the years.

“There is no need an average Nigerian should be angry, my people need to be free from the grip of bad leadership.

“However, I know that the cycle of evil is winding up and we want to see that it happens finally in 2023,” he said.

  • Charlyboy weds wife in church after 40 years

Charlyboy weds wife in church after 40 years

Nigerian showbiz maestro and rights activist, Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charlyboy, has formally walked his American wife, Diane, down the aisle after 40 years of marriage.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the marriage produced three children.

Charlyboy and Diane exchanged marriage vows on Saturday evening at the Chapel of Sisters of Jesus the Redeemer Catholic Church in Gwarimpa, Abuja.

The low-keyed wedding was officiated by the outspoken Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Dioceses, Bishop Mathew Kukah, and had in attendance close friends and relatives of the couple, including the aged mother of Charlyboy.

The Archbishop of Abuja Catholic Diocese, Cardinal John Onaiyekan, was also in attendance among some other clergymen.

The couple exchanged the “I do” vows amidst cheers from the congregation.

They thereafter signed the marriage register.

Onaiyekan, in his exhortation, hailed the couple for staying together for over four decades.

He, however, urged them to be committed to their marriage vows by showing mutual love, understanding and respect for each other.

”I specially congratulate Charles and his wife for this Godly decision, and I pray God to keep them together.”

Charlyboy told NAN on the sidelines that he and his wife decided to wed in church to honour his aged mother who had been ‘pleading that we do the right thing’.

He told NAN that he got married as a teenager in 1974, and secured divorced after the union produced one child.

He noted that the Catholic Church observed a strict marital doctrine.

”This is not that kind of marriage with fanfare; I am doing it to please my aged mother and meet certain demands of the society.

”She has been pleading that we do the right thing, saying this is the woman I have been living with for 40 years.

”We have been following through with the process of annulment of my last marriage, and my former wife who has since remarried cooperated very well, and then in 2017, the marriage was formally annulled.

”My mother actually got the wife for me at the age of 19 because I was a little rascally with women as a young man; she thinks it would curb my sexual excesses,” he said.

Charlyboy, who is 67 years, has nine children from different women, and has 16 grandchildren.

He has, however, always regarded Diane as the mother of all his children. (NAN)

  • Charly Boy to stage catholic wedding after 40 years with wife

Charly Boy to stage catholic wedding after 40 years with wife

Controversial Nigerian entertainer and activist, Charly Boy is set to walk his wife, Lady Diane down the aisle in Abuja for formal exchange of marital vows.

The wedding will take place at the chapel of the Sisters of Jesus the Redeemer, Catholic Church , in Gwarimpa Estate, where he resides.

The ceremony which holds today, Saturday December 15, will be officiated by the opinionated Catholic clergy, Bishop Mathew Hassan Kukah. The wedding will have in attendance family members and close associates of the couple.

Charly Boy revealed that he hopes to convince his wife to ride with him in a tricycle to and from the church to emphasize the low-key nature of the ceremony.

The entertainer was first married to Stella at a Catholic Church in Onitsha in 1974. The relationship produced one child. The Catholic Church observes a strict marital doctrine which demands that couples who contracted a marriage on the church must petition the Catholic Pontiff for an annulment if they wish to opt out of the union.

According to Oputa, “We have been following through with the process of annulment for sometime. My former wife who has since remarried cooperated very well.

“She had no objection. The reason I put forward for the annulment was that I was underage. My mother actually got the wife for me at the age of 19 because I a little rascally with women. “Getting me married at that age was supposed to curb my sexual excesses.

Amazingly, Charly Boy’s mother is once again the reason he is contracting a formal marriage to Lady Diane, who has three children for him.

“This is not that kind of marriage with fanfare. I am doing it to please my aged mother. She has been pleading that we do the right thing.

“This is a woman I have been living with for 40 years. We know each other well. This is about obedience to certain demands of the society.

“People wonder how I am able to live with one woman all these years. It is not that we do not have misunderstanding.

“Marriage is successful when you are able to manage your incompatibility. I saw my parents quarrel, reconcile, kiss and hold hands again. These are the values that have guided me my relationship”, he said.

  • Court orders Police to pay Charly Boy N50m damages

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has ordered the Nigeria Police Force, IGP and the FCT Commissioner of Police to pay N50m to Charles Oputa, a.k.a Charly Boy, the convener of ‘OurMumuDonDo’ movement.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Justice John Tsoho awarded the amount on Monday while delivering judgment in a fundamental rights suit brought against the Police by Charly Boy.
He said the sum was a compensation for the violation of his rights to dignity of the human person, freedom of expression, peaceful assembly and association.
Tsoho added that the Police should publish an apology to Charly Boy in two national newspapers.
NAN recalls that in a suit filed on March 29, Charly Boy had accused the Police and their officers of harassing him and members of the OurMumuDonDo campaign during the #ResumeOrResign protests.
Charly Boy, through his lawyer, Mr. Inibehe Effiong, argued that the Police attacked the group during a peaceful demonstration at the Unity Fountain in Abuja.
He asked the court to determine whether the “use of water cannons, teargas canisters and wild Police dogs to harass him and members of his group during the said peaceful protest on August 8, 2017 was constitutional.”
He argued that the act was an infringement on his fundamental rights, freedom of expression, peaceful assembly and association as enshrined in sections 34, 39, and 40 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).
Charly Boy, therefore, prayed the court to make a compelling order on the FCT Police and their commissioner to publish a public apology to him in five national newspapers.
He also demanded that payment of the sum of N100 million as general damages be awarded to the applicant as well as direct that N400 million be paid as exemplary damages by the Police.
Delivering judgment on the case marked as Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/343/2018, Justice Tsoho held that there was no evidence that miscreants invaded or stormed the premises of the protest as alleged by the police.
On whether the Applicant was entitled to stage the protest, the court held that protest is a constitutionally-guaranteed right, provided it is done peacefully.
“The Respondents (the Police) need not exercise an uncommon aggression and mayhem to ward off alleged miscreants.
“The law is that the court has the right to grant redress to anyone whose right is violated and the applicant is entitled to a remedy.
“Relief four is granted and the respondents are ordered to publish an apology to the applicant in two national newspapers for violating his fundamental rights.
“The sum of N50m is awarded against the respondents as general and exemplary damages,’’ Tsoho ruled.
Reacting to the judgment, Charly Boy’s counsel, Effiong, described it as “a resounding victory for democracy, freedom of expression and peaceful assembly in the country.”
“This judgment sends unequivocal message to the Nigerian Police that they have no power to stop or disrupt peaceful protests by Nigerians.
“The Police, by this judgment, cannot invent flimsy excuses to stop citizens from exercising their fundamental rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.
“I am highly elated by this victory for democracy,’’ Effiong said.

Charly Boy debunks planning soldier’s arrest

Nigerian singer and activist, Charly Boy has reacted to the claims made by a Nigerian soldier who revealed that he was responsible for his arrest, which lasted 36 days.
In a chat with Punch, Charly Boy said that although he posted the video, which was suggested to him by a friend because of the message it passed across, he never denied reposting the video, as he never had any contact with the soldier.
In the post on his Instagram page, the solider, known as Emmy benison, noted that Charly Boy denied reposting the controversial video and blamed the entertainer for his arrest.
He said, “This man (Charly Boy) is nothing but a liar. He claims to be fighting for justice but he is afraid to stand for what he is fighting for. I was arrested and locked up for 36 days because of this man.
“I reached out to him and he denied ever posting my video. I had respect for you as a man of integrity but you failed me sir,” he added.
Narrating what happened, Charly Boy said, “I’ve never met such soldier in my life, I remember uploading a video of a soldier, which I got from someone. I reposted the video because I thought it was odd for a solider to be so critical about the government. I don’t know him personally and I don’t know anything about his arrest.”
