Femi Kuti didn’t attack Charly Boy on social media- Lawyer declares

Afrobeat musician, Femi Kuti has released a statement negating reports that he attacked Charly Boy over the latter’s decision to support his daughter coming out as a lesbian.

According to a statement released by the revered musician, through his lawyer, the purported post did not come from him.

The statement also said all his social media accounts are verified and as such, the said post being linked to him could only be accredited to the “malicious intent on the part of the author.”

    Read the full statement below:

Our attention has been brought to a post which was published on the Linda Ikeji platform on Sunday 22nd of July 2018. The post which is attached here alleged that our client Femi Kuti “took to Instagram to slam CharlyBoy for his newfound role as a gay rights activist”.

While the post has since been deleted, due to outcry from members of the public who pointed out the error in the handle she was quoting as Mr Kuti’s, we will like to state that at no time did our client make any statements about Mr Charles “Charly Boy” Oputa on his social media accounts or on any other platform.

Mr Kuti’s handles on social media are all verified and there was no way the purported handle could have been mistaken for his unless there was malicious intent on the part of the author.

For the records, we would like to also state that:

    1. Our client Femi Kuti respects individual freedoms and will never impose his beliefs on others or ridicule them for expressing theirs. He also respects Mr Oputa as a fellow creative and for his activities in speaking out for the under-represented and disenfranchised.
    2. We demand that an apology is issued to our client on the Linda Ikeji blog by the author of the post, as this issue has caused him emotional distress. Especially during a time when he is on tour flying the flag of Nigerian Afrobeat music in the United States.
    3. In this age of social media, members of the media should ensure that they take extra precautions before sharing stories or news which have the potential to cause injury to the reputation of others. It is important that we do not sacrifice our decency as humans on the altar of viral news and website clicks.

We trust that the Linda Ikeji organization will let wise counsel prevail.

    Thank you very much.

He returned for an exclusive meeting with Reverend Tom on Tuesday 27th February, in the company of some members of his group. Overwhelmed by the expression of Christ’s love, he appreciated our man of God, Reverend Dr. Chris Oyakhilome for his passion for Youth Development and Nation Building, as Reverend Tom highlighted the impact of the InnerCity Mission, Future Africa Leaders’ Foundation, Campus Ministry, Global Youth Leaders’ Forum and ReachOut Nigeria Campaign.

It opened his eyes to new and more effective ways to channel his passion.

Reverend Tom then ministered to him privately, and he gloriously accepted Christ and was born again. In his new found joy, he requested that Reverend Tom also prays for his group members. He beamed with smiles as Reverend Tom announced to them, ‘CHARLY BOY IS BORN AGAIN!’ The news was received with joy and excitement, and Reverend Tom also went ahead to lead members of his group to Christ. He also gave them our ministry materials, and presented Charly Boy with a LoveWorld Plus decoder for his home.

What a glaring sign that our prayers have been answered! The Lord is doing great wonders in our midst. There is no limit to the length of the Master’s love…it can reach the farthest soul, even those perceived as ‘unreachable’. It is certainly the month of CHANGE! Glory to God!?

  • Fuel scarcity: Charlyboy leads peaceful protest to NNPC headquarters

Charles Oputa, a.k.a Charlyboy, on Wednesday, led the `Our Mumu Don Do’ group, on a peaceful protest to the headquarters of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) over lingering fuel scarcity across the country.

‘Our Mumu Don Do ’is a non-political coalition of Nigerians from all backgrounds that advocates national reawakening towards holding leaders responsible and ensuring good governance at all levels.

The group said the protest was necessary for the NNPC and other stakeholders in the petroleum sector to know that Nigerians were tired of the fuel predicament.

Charlyboy who spoke on behalf of the group, noted that the lingering fuel scarcity has brought untold hardship on Nigerians, as most stations have remained shut or still with long vehicular queues.

“For over three months, Nigerians have endured agonizing fuel scarcity crisis, which has caused a hike in the prices of commodities, cost of transportation and wastage of man-hours spent on queues daily at petrol stations.

“The lingering fuel scarcity has now brought untold hardship on the ordinary Nigerian people who may not be able to hold those in charge responsible.

“We at the Our Mumu Don Do Movement have decided to ensure that the President, the NNPC and other stakeholders in the oil sector are compelled to find a lasting solution to this current crisis.

“Let them do something urgently to abate the sufferings of Nigerians, not just in Abuja alone, but across the country,” he said.

Leaders of some other Civil Society Groups also joined the Our Mumu Don Do peaceful protest to the NNPC headquarters.

Ariyo Dare-Atoye of the Coalition in Defence of Nigerian Democracy, said Nigerians across different states were buying fuel at exorbitant prices, far above the official pump price of N145 per litre.

“It is unacceptable that government and its agents would to `normalise’ the scarcity, while Nigerians are buying fuel at cut-throat prices in different states.

“It is the duty of leaders to take responsibility and serve the interest of the people, no matter what it takes, and that is what we are demanding from the NNPC and leaders at all levels,” he said.

Also, Mr Deji Adeyanju of the Concerned Nigerians urged the NNPC to apply inclusive approach in addressing the fuel challenge.

“The Federal Republic of Nigeria is not limited to Abuja, as millions of citizens are still struggling to get fuel at exorbitant prices in different parts of the country.

“If the situation appeared insurmountable, then the NNPC should convene stakeholders meeting for ideas on how to collectively stop this lingering challenge facing Nigerians,” he said.

The group therefore handed a letter containing its grievances and demands, addressed to the Group Managing Director of the NNPC, Maikanti Baru.

Head of Group Public Affairs Division of the Corporation, Ndu Ughamadu, who received the letter on behalf of the GMD, commended the group for its genuine concern towards the welfare of Nigerians.

He therefore assured the group that their demands would be looked into accordingly, and added that the Corporation was doing everything possible within its reach to ensure that fuel was always available for Nigerians.

He however attributed the lingering shortages of fuel to ‘leakages’, adding that many marketers were diverting fuel meant for local consumption to other neighbouring countries.

“The NNPC has remained the sole importer of fuel, as well as local refining, and it has effectively done this to meet the daily demand of the products.

“However, the activities of smugglers who divert the product meant for one place to another, and even take them to neighbouring countries, has been a major challenge,” he noted.
