Chelsea boosts European hopes after thrashing West Ham

Chelsea kept up their electric goalscoring form at home and boosted their hopes of European football with a 5-0 thrashing of West Ham on Sunday.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side have now scored 22 times in their last six Premier League games at Stamford Bridge.

There was a fluency to their attacking play that could well have yielded substantially more than the goals they put past the hapless visitors on Sunday.

Chelsea were three up at the break with Cole Palmer netted the 21st league goal of his debut season in West London, steering a loose ball into the corner, thereafter Conor Gallagher volleyed home.

Noni Madueke headed the third near the end of an excellent first half, before Nicolas Jackson took his tally for the season to 13 in the league with a brace after the interval.

Chelsea climbed to seventh after recording back-to-back league wins for the first time since January, and there is increasingly the feeling that, after a difficult start, the players are responding to their head coach’s methods.

For David Moyes’ Hammers, this was a calamitous display, eliminated from Europe and now all but out of the race to qualify again next year,

It was hard to avoid a sense of a promising season petering out as the Chelsea goals flew past Alphonse Areola and their players came to look more and more dejected.

“First half we didn’t try to play. We didn’t push forward when we come out. We tried to play in the second half but there was not that confidence today.

“We have to take a look back a this game and bounce back better at the weekend.”

On their top-four chances, van de Ven added: “It will be difficult. I don’t want to look up to the Champions League after this game, it was not a good performance from us and it is important we play a good game on Sunday.”

Women’s Champions League: Barcelona beat Chelsea 2-1 on aggregate to reach fourth consecutive final

Barcelona femini on Saturday reached their fourth Women’s Champions League final with a controversial 2-0 win against Chelsea in the semi-final second leg.

Barcelona overturned a 1-0 first leg deficit, Jonatan Giraldez’s side took the lead through Ballon d’Or winner Aitana Bonmati at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea’s Kadeisha Buchanan was sent off in the second half for a contentious second booking.

And Fridolina Rolfo wrapped up Barcelona’s 2-1 aggregate victory with a debatable penalty.

It will be Barca’s fourth successive final berth as they look to lift the trophy for the third time.

“We are very happy. We deserved the victory. The first leg we were not better than the opponent. Today we created more clear chances,” Giraldez said.

“The connection with the players is amazing. I’m proud of them. I’m really happy to get another final. It’s special.”

Chelsea’s first-leg victory last week is the only defeat Barca have suffered this season, ending the club’s five-year unbeaten record on home turf.

But Blues boss Emma Hayes, who leaves to take charge of the USA women’s national team at the of this season, said Chelsea would have to produce a perfect display to overcome “the best team in the world” again in the rematch.

Chelsea were unable to rise to the challenge and their wait for a first Champions League crown goes on.

They have now lost to Barca in successive Champions League semi-finals after being beaten by the Spanish club in the 2021 final.

EPL: Pochettino slams VAR after Chelsea’s 2-2 draw with Aston Villa

Mauricio Pochettino the Chelsea manager  has slammed Video Assistant Referee shortly after Chelsea drew 2-2 with Aston Villa on Saturday night.

The Blues conceded two goals in the first half but came back fighting hard to restore parity in the second half of the encounter.

Chelsea defender, Alex Disasi thought he had headed in the winner, but VAR intervened and the goal was ruled out.

The result leaves Chelsea in 9th place with 48 points.

Speaking after the game, Pochettino said: “Two different things: the referee said it was a foul and disallowed the goal and then went to the VAR to confirm.

“The referee is unbelievable and it’s ridiculous. It is difficult to accept these types of things; in the semi-final [FA Cup against Man City] two weeks ago it was handball and it was no penalty; the referee, he didn’t check it.

“It is painful as it has damaged English football and I think Villa players and their fans didn’t understand why the goal was disallowed.

“They said it was foul and if you see the challenge, what happens if we go into every single challenge like this, it is going to be a foul and we wouldn’t finish the game with 11 [players].

“We can talk about the performance or the decision – it is damaging the game.”
