EPL: Higuain chooses cursed Chelsea jersey number

New Chelsea striker Gonzalo Higuain has reportedly taken the brave decision to pick the number nine shirt.

According to SkySports, as cited on social media, the Argentine picked the number that many regard as ‘cursed’ at Stamford Bridge.

It follows a series of players being unable to perform to the highest level while wearing the number nine.

Those include Alvaro Morata and Fernando Torres in recent years, while the likes of Mateja Kezman, Hernan Crespo and Steve Sidwell have also failed to impress wearing the number.

Higuain sealed his loan move to Chelsea today after completing medicals at the club’s Cobham training ground in London.

Chelsea, who were unable to secure a deal over the line in time for the striker to face Tottenham in their League Cup semi-final on Thursday night, but the 31-year-old could well feature against Bournemouth in the Blues’ next Premier League outing.

EPL: Hazard is not a leader, says Sarri

Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri has praised Eden Hazard’s qualities as a great footballer, but says that the Belgian is ‘not a leader’.

Sarri hit the headlines last week for publicly chastising his squad after a 2-0 loss to Arsenal, claiming that his players are ‘very difficult to motivate’ and that they perhaps shouldn’t be playing at the highest level.

The Italian then went on to say that a new player, or even an ‘old head’, could be the answer to turning the Blues’ fortunes, suggesting that the club lack leadership.

When asked about Cesar Azpilicueta and David Luiz as potential leaders for the Blues, Sarri turned heads by stating Hazard is not on that list.

“He’s more of an individual player than a leader,” Sarri said. “He’s very important for us, of course, because he’s a great player. He can win a match in two minutes, sometimes one minute.

“He is one of the best in the world, but at this moment he is not a leader.”

Hazard reveals why he frustrated Mourinho, Conte at Chelsea

Chelsea playmaker, Eden Hazard, has admitted he “frustrated” Antonio Conte and Jose Mourinho during their respective reigns at Chelsea and left the two managers wanting more from him on the pitch.

Chelsea had a promising start in the Premier League this term, but their form has drastically declined and Saturday’s 2-0 defeat to Arsenal, piled yet more pressure on Sarri.

Speaking to France Football, he said: “I didn’t just frustrate Conte. In my career, I’ve frustrated all my managers and now I’m frustrating Sarri.

“I frustrated Mourinho. They all think you need to score more, do such and such more. I’ll also frustrate the next manager I have.”

EPL: Luiz reveals who to blame for Chelsea’s loss to Arsenal

Chelsea defender, David Luiz has blamed Maurizio Sarri’s men following the Blues’ 2-0 defeat by Arsenal in the Premier League encounter on Saturday.

Goals from Alexandre Lacazette and Laurent Koscielny gave Unai Emery’s side all three points against Chelsea at the Emirates.

The Brazilian blamed Chelsea players for not converting their chances in front of goal against the hosts.

Speaking on Chelsea’s 2-0 defeat to Arsenal, Luiz was quoted by Independent UK as saying at post-match: “The first 25 minutes we did not perform well, after that to control a team like Arsenal here with possession is never easy, especially in the second half we did that.

“But then after that possession and being more dangerous is two different things, so I think we had the possession but we still have to be more dangerous.”

Luiz also identified the creation and conversion of chances as areas in which Chelsea “have to improve”, adding that: “When I say that I am not talking about the strikers, I am talking about the whole team.

“The offensive phase starts with goalkeeper (Kepa Arrizabalaga), and then with us the defenders, with everybody are to blame.”

Luiz will now hope to lead Chelsea to victory when they tackle Bournemouth on Wednesday in their next Premier League fixture.

Meanwhile, Chelsea are believed to have agreed a deal with Juventus to sign striker, Gonzalo Higuain this month on loan until the end of the season.

“Morata has already agreed deal with Atletico Madrid. It seems to be a matter of finding a buyer for (Nikola) Kalinic,” Balague told BBC Radio 5 live.

“Everything else seems to be in place for Morata to abandon what feels like a nightmare.”

Morata has struggled at Stamford Bridge since joining Chelsea from Real Madrid last summer.

Petr Cech a big loss to football – Mourinho

Former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho says four-time Premier League winning goalkeeper Petr Cech will be a “big loss” to football.

The Portuguese said he is proud to have managed one of the modern game’s best goalkeepers, who announced on Tuesday he will be retiring at the end of this season.

Mourinho and Cech arrived at Chelsea in the same summer of 2004 – and won the Premier League title in their first season in England.

Cech went on to win three more titles – and the Champions League – with Chelsea, before moving across London to his current club Arsenal.

“I am honoured to have been the manager that, at such an early age, gave Petr a top Premier League number one shirt, Mourinho told Sky Sports.

“After that day, it is all about him. All about his numbers, his performances, his clean sheets, his titles and his professionalism.

“It’s a big loss for football but history can’t be deleted. Many congratulations on such an amazing career.”
