EPL: Chelsea facing disaster after Brighton defeat – Carragher

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believes fans and players will be getting frustrated at Chelsea.

The Blues were beaten 3-0 at Brighton on Friday night, leaving their hold on fourth place again looking shaky.

Carragher said: “Chelsea has been deemed in the last couple of years a project and I think the natives will be getting restless.

“(Mauricio) Pochettino had an incredible run at the end of the season. I think in terms of the numbers you have to look at, there is not going to be much difference between the seasons.

“I think it is a real worry if they aren’t getting Champions League football. They have spent big boy money and they were one of the big boys before they even spent that money.”

Carragher also said: “This idea that this project is going to take three years, the problem is that the best players won’t wait that long. You can see a frustration starting to build. Cole Palmer is good enough to compete for the biggest honours.

“Nottingham Forest are third and Chelsea have spent over a billion pounds. They are basically playing once a week. They have to get Champions League. If they don’t get Champions League it will be a disaster.”

  • What I learned from Chelsea axing – Potter

What I learned from Chelsea axing – Potter

West Ham boss Graham Potter has again revisited his sacking at Chelsea.

Potter was axed by Chelsea in April 2023 before returning to football this season with the Irons.

“At the time you can imagine I wasn’t in a good place because you are disappointed to lose your job and it hasn’t gone very well, or clearly as well as you’d like,” Potter told Football Focus.

    “It was a tough moment.”

On how he looks back at his dismissal, Potter said: “I think it makes you better, it makes you a stronger person, it makes you a better coach.

“The worst that can happen is you can lose your job and you can still be alright, you can still move forward, still have something to offer, still grow as a person.

“That bubble we’re in, it can be a little too far down the rabbit hole. Be grateful for the good and the bad, just deal with it.”

He also said of his time away from the game, “It was nice to get out of the bubble – 12 years, you can end up lacking a bit of perspective.

“To zoom out and see the world and football for what it is, and hopefully it makes you a better person and better manager.”

  • Enzo Maresca finds positives from FA Cup exit

Enzo Maresca finds positives from FA Cup exit

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca says there’s no reason to dwell on their FA Cup exit.

Chelsea were eliminated at the fourth round by Brighton last night.

But Maresca could see a positive from an early exit, insisting:  “We tried to come here and play our game.

“We had some chances at 2-1. Now we can focus on the Premier League and the Conference League.

“We always try to win games. But at the same time you have to take the consequences of the result.”

Aston Villa reach personal terms with Chelsea defender

Aston Villa have reached an agreement on personal terms with Chelsea defender Axel Disasi.

As reported by Fabrizio Romano, the two clubs have yet to finalize a transfer fee.

Villa manager Unai Emery is keen on bolstering his defense following the departure of Diego Carlos to Fenerbahce.

Disasi, who is versatile enough to play both full-back and center-back, has struggled for game time at Chelsea.

The Frenchman has managed only six Premier League appearances this season.

The French defender joined Chelsea from Monaco in 2023, but has found it difficult to secure a regular starting spot.

Villa are hopeful that Disasi’s addition will strengthen their defensive options for the Premier League and Champions League.

Khusanov should not have played against Chelsea – Guardiola

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has spokeb about handing Abdukodir Khusanov with an instant start against Chelsea on Saturday.

The new arrival from Lens was at fault for Chelsea’s opening goal, though grew into the game as City eventually won 3-1.

Guardiola said: “Khusanov should not have played; he should have taken more time. It’s not easy against Chelsea in the Premier League when you come from another country and can’t really communicate with the teammates.

“He arrived without training and still has to figure out what to do and the process around it … Imagine going through what Khusanov has experienced and what happened, ‘Oh God!’”

New City striker Omar Marmoush also said of Khusanov: “Khusanov is an exceptional player and I would like to congratulate him for his debut.”

Transfer: Borussia Dortmund turn to Chelsea outcast

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca is eager to facilitate an exit for Ben Chilwell this winter.

The left back, who is out of favor at Stamford Bridge, could be offered an escape route by Borussia Dortmund.

The German club is seeking alternatives after missing out on Chilwell’s teammate Renato Veiga, who opted for a loan move to Juventus instead.

According to Football Insider, Chilwell, who has been told he has no future at Chelsea, is not in demand due to his £190K-a-week wages.

Chelsea may need to subsidize his wages, similar to the arrangement with Raheem Sterling at Arsenal.

Veiga, who joined Chelsea six months ago, sought more first-team football, prompting his move to Juve.

Chelsea boss Maresca approves midfielder sale

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca is looking to replace midfielder Cesar Casadei, who is expected to leave Stamford Bridge this month.

Several Serie A clubs are interested in Casadei, with Lazio already making an £11.5 million bid, per Gianluca Di Marzio.

Since joining Chelsea in 2023, Casadei has made only 17 appearances and had loan spells at Reading and Leicester City.

To fill the gap in the squad, Chelsea is pushing to sign Hellas Verona’s Reda Belahyane for £12.6 million.

Belahyane has made 20 appearances in Serie A this season, contributing two assists.

  • EPL: Chelsea exposed our problems – Wolves boss

EPL: Chelsea exposed our problems – Wolves boss

Wolves manager Vitor Pereira had no complaints after their defeat at Chelsea on Monday night.

Tosin Adarabioyo, Marc Cucurella and Noni Madueke struck the goals for Chelsea, with Matt Doherty scoring for Wolves on halftime.

Pereira said: “We faced a strong team with players that one against one can create chances. We started the game not in the way that I like. We defended too much in the low block.

“We concede two goals in set pieces and a goal that we cannot concede. We need to improve tactical maturity.

“The worst moment of our game is when we are defending in the last third. When we are defending in front of our box, this is a problem for us.”

Chelsea boss Maresca admits Sancho surprised him, advises Madueke

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca admits he’s delighted with the impact Jadon Sancho this season.

Sancho is on-loan at Chelsea this season from Manchester United.

Ahead of tonight’s clash with Bournemouth, Maresca said: “For me he’s doing very well. I am quite surprised with Jadon, because I knew Jadon already (from seeing him at his previous clubs) and I know what I expected from him, but in terms of being consistent, he’s doing very well.

“Apart from a short part of the season when he had some problems, when he was out ill, then for the rest he has been very good.

“I expected him to do well, but for all the players doing well for a long period is not easy, and he has been doing well for a long period already. He’s doing well, now he just needs to continue going in that way.”

On fellow winger Noni Madueke, Maresca stated: “It is not only from Noni, from all the squad.

“There are players who are doing that, like Moi (Caicedo) who since we started has been doing well. Almost all of them are doing well, but it’s not just about Noni, it’s about all the players. In the moment that they can be consistent, it is better for the team.

“I consider Noni to be one of our best players, to be honest, but because of that we want our best players to be in the right way always. No switching off, no some days that they can drop.

“It is the other way and he is doing very good with us, knowing that during a season it is normal that for some moments players are not 100 per cent. But it is not just about Noni, it is about all the players.”

  • Why we don’t judge Nicolas Jackson – Maresca

Why we don’t judge Nicolas Jackson – Maresca

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca defended his under-fire forward Nicolas Jackson.

The striker hasn’t scored in almost a month for the Premier League side, who are experiencing a dip in form.

As the Blues look to take on Bournemouth in the league on Tuesday, Maresca was asked about Jackson’s form and confidence.

He stated: “Just to continue to work in the way he is working. As you said, he scored many goals at the beginning of the season. Now, there are games where he is not scoring but we are completely happy with Nicolas.

“We don’t judge Nicolas just because of the goals. We judge Nicolas for different kinds of things and as I said already, I spoke with Nicolas a few days ago. Last year I think he scored 14 or 15 goals in the Premier League without penalties. (Erling) Haaland, penalty, (Mohamed) Salah, penalty, Cole Palmer, penalty.

“If you score 14 or 15 goals in the Premier League and you have four or five penalties, no more than that, then in the end it is 20 goals for a striker. This year, he scored already nine or 10 goals. For Nicolas, he is doing well, he is scoring goals with us without penalties and that is not normal for a No.9. Normally No.9s have penalties. We are completely happy with Nicolas.

“For sure, he is going to score goals. Also he is a bit unlucky because in those games he didn’t score, he had great chances to score. Sometimes you will score but he has to continue in the same way.”
