Why I didn’t report Super TV CEO, Ataga’s death – Chidinma

Chidinma Ojukwu, who is standing trial for the alleged murder of Super TV Chief Executive Officer, Michael Ataga has stated her reasons why she did not report the death to police.

Chidinma, a 300-level student of the University of Lagos in her defence on Monday before Justice Yetunde Adesanya at the Lagos State High Court sitting at Tafawa Balewa Square, explained that she feared being wrongly accused if she reported the crime.

“I had read of incidents where people reported crimes and ended up being accused themselves,” she said.

“I also thought of calling the gateman again while I was at the staircase of the apartment, but I ended the call out of fear.”

The defendant was also charged with stealing and forgery alongside one Adedapo Quadri and her sister, Chioma Egbuchu.

They were arraigned on October 12, 2021, on a nine-count charge preferred against her.

The defendant who opened her case on April 17, 2025, narrated the events that followed the discovery of Ataga’s lifeless body.

Chidinma gave a detailed account of her activities from June 16 to 23, 2021.

Led in evidence by her counsel, Onwuka Egwu, the defendant recounted that on June 16, 2021, she noticed that a WhatsApp message she had sent earlier to Ataga had been read and that his status was showing “online,” even though she had seen him lying motionless in a pool of blood.

She said she attempted to call his number several times, but the calls were declined. “I was confused. I asked myself if someone else had his phone,” she said.

Chidinma testified that she contacted the gateman known as Abu, who usually handled utilities at the short-let apartment.

When she asked him if he had seen Ataga, she said he replied that Ataga had left the previous day. However, the gateman later informed her that Ataga’s car was still parked at the property.

“Judging by what Abu told me, I said to myself, what have I done? I then sent a WhatsApp message to Michael saying, ‘Please forgive me. I didn’t mean to leave you in that state. I was very scared.’ After that, I was blocked from the number and couldn’t reach him again,” she said.

Chidinma stated that she had two laptops, one Macbook and one HP laptop, and on June 18, 2021, she took them to Computer Village, one for sale and the other for repair.

She said that when she got to the vendor, whom she normally purchased from, and gave him the Macbook, for sale, the vendor asked her for the receipt.

“I said it was a gift from last December 2020, and then the manager entered and asked me to unlock the Macbook laptop so that he could check very well.

“Then I unlocked the laptop, they checked whatever they wanted to check and then asked me how much I wanted to sell. I said N600,000, we negotiated then it got sold for N495,000. He then asked me to sign out of the i-cloud, I signed out and the money was transferred into my bank account, and then I took the HP laptop for repair.”

The defendant also described events on June 19 and 20, 2021, stating that she attempted to reach Ataga through SMS due to a poor network connection.

Chidinma told the court that on June 20, 2021, she spoke with her sister, Chioma (the third defendant), and invited her over.

Chioma, who was in the eastern part of the country at the time, visited her on June 22, 2021.

According to Chidinma, Chioma had misplaced her phone in April when she travelled to the East.

Since she had two phones: an iPhone 11, and an iPhone 7, she gave her an iPhone 7 Plus she had used the previous year.

She testified that she was arrested by the police on June 23, 2021.

Chidinma, who denied having Ataga’s property, claimed that one of the officers slapped her, but her father intervened.

She said they were both handcuffed and taken to the police station at Panti.

“At the DCP’s office, I told him I didn’t know about the death. I said I ran out of fear and took my things. My father was also handcuffed. The DCP said he was interfering with the officers’ work,” she recounted.

She further told the court that the police later took them to her residence, where they recovered her phones, laptop, a black disposable bag containing clothes, some documents from the apartment, and ID cards.

Chidinma alleged that she was then taken to a smaller room where her left hand was handcuffed to a chair.

She said an officer identified as Bamidele brought a blank statement form and asked her to write a statement.

“I told him I knew my rights and that a lawyer should be present. He said no lawyer was coming, and no one would be allowed to see me,” she claimed.

She further alleged that Bamidele threatened her, saying her family members, including her 10-year-old sister, could be detained if she did not cooperate.

“Because of what he said, I started writing,” she said.

After writing her statement, Ojukwu said Bamidele tore it up and demanded a new version.

He allegedly showed her graphic images from the crime scene and claimed that a robe recovered from the apartment was used to tie the deceased’s hands, an allegation she denied.

“I told him I couldn’t have tied Michael up. He was a huge man,” she said.

How police tracked Chidinma after death of Super TV CEO – Witness

A prosecution witness, DSP Olusegun Bamidele, on Monday told a Lagos High Court sitting at Tafawa Balewa Square, that Chidinma Ojukwu charged with murder of Mr Usifo Ataga, was tracked through her phone.

Bamidele is the ninth prosecution witness in the trial of Ojukwu for murder of Ataga, Chief Executive Officer of Super TV.

Ojukwu is charged with murder, stealing, and forgery alongside her sister, Chioma Egbuchu, and one Adedapo Quadri.

    They all pleaded not guilty.

Bamidele said that the Intelligence and Tactical Unit of the State Criminal Investigating Department (SCID) Yaba, tracked Ojukwu down at No. 57, Akinwunmi St., Alagomeji, Yaba.

Bamidele, who serves at the Homicide Section of the SCID, gave evidence at the resumed trial of Ojukwu.

He was led in evidence by Lagos State Director for Public Prosecutions, Mrs A. O. Oluwafemi.

He narrated how the case was allegedly transferred from Maroko Police Station to his department at the SCID.

He said that the case was transferred and assigned to his team on June 17, 2021, with a suspect, one Nkechi Mogbo, the owner of the apartment where the alleged murder occurred.

The witness said that the Investigating Police Officer (IPO) from Maroko Police Station told him how a complaint about a body with a mark of violence was brought to the station.

Bamidele said that the IPO also informed him that he took pictures and made video recordings which were transferred into his Infinix Hot 4.

The witness testified that after receiving the complaint from the IPO, he visited the scene of alleged crime alongside the IPO and Mogbo.

“We met the security guard who took us into the apartment, and I observed that there were bloodstains on the floor, the bed was ruffled with blood stains on the pillow and duvet.

“The IPO also took me to Yaba General Hospital mortuary to see the body, and I observed that there were stab wounds on the body, including injury on his head and knees.

“I also saw that the two wrists had marks indicating that they were tied,” Bamidele said.

The witness said that he interacted with Mogbo who informed him that, on June 13, a phone call came from one Jewel, who requested for a room at her short-service apartment.

He also said that the security guard at the apartment told him how the body of the deceased was discovered at the apartment where the said Jewel lodged with the deceased.

Bamidele also said that the security guard at the apartment gave him a phone number which the said Jewel used in calling him while at the apartment.

“After getting the information from the security guard, we engaged a tracking team.

“The trackers with the intelligent and tactical unit, tracked one Chidinma Adaora Ojukwu, down at No. 57, Akinwunmi St., Alagomeji Yaba,” he said.

The witness also told the court that the statements of the owner of the apartment and the security were all taken and he identified the statements which were already in court as exhibits.

He also said that the pictures and videos in his phone were downloaded into a disc by an information technology expert in his office.

At this point, prosecution counsel prayed for an adjournment to enable the prosecution to bring the video for viewing and to tender it in evidence.

Earlier, an Access Bank account officer to the deceased, Mr Toafeek Lawal, gave evidence as the eighth prosecution witness.

He gave evidence on the Naira account statements of the deceased, starting from April 1, 2021, to August 31, 2021.

He said that there were, however, no transactions on the account from June 19, 2021 to August 31, 2021.

He said that immediately the bank learnt of the death of Ataga, it placed a Post No Debit on the account to stop any debit from being effected on the account.

He said that money was transferred from Ataga’s account on June 16, and the transaction were done through USSD platform to his other account.

He said that the deceased operated two accounts with the bank which were a Naira account and a domiciliary account.

The witness was cross-examined by Ojukwu’s counsel, Mr Onwuka Egwu.

Egwu asked the witness to confirm that in a USSD mode of transfer, the password would be exclusive to the owner of the account.

The witness answered that the password was meant to be exclusive unless the owner decided otherwise.

Egwu also asked the witness to confirm how many payments were made to the first defendant during the period the statement covered.

The witness answered that it was only once.

Justice Yetunde Adesanya adjourned the case until May 10 for continuation of trial.

How Super TV boss was stabbed 7 times on the neck – Witness

Co-founder of Super Network Limited (owners of Super TV), Mr. Raman Obiorah Saliu, on Monday, told a Lagos High Court sitting at the Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) that a total of seven multiple stabs was found on the neck of the Chief Executive Officer of Super TV, Usifo Ataga.

Testifying in the trial of a 300 level Mass Communication student of the University of Lagos, Chidinma Ojukwu, who is suspected to have killed Ataga, Saliu said apart from the stabs on Ataga’s neck, there was one to the stomach and several on the two sides of the ribs and the left ventricular to the chest.
Saliu, who broke down in tears while testifying before Justice Yetunde Adesanya, said apart from the stabs on Ataga’s neck, there was one to the stomach and several on the two sides of the ribs and the left ventricular to the chest.

Led in evidence by the Deputy Director of Public Prosecution, Mrs Adenike Oluwafemi, Saliu broke down in tears while testifying before Justice Yetunde Adesanya.

According to Saliu, the deceased was tied up, on both hands and legs like a ram waiting to be slaughtered.

Saliu, who is also a network engineer, programmer, and developer, testified as the fifth prosecution witness in the case. He told the court that he met the late Usifo Ataga 10 years ago in the course of building the Super TV App.

He explained that he was introduced to Ataga by a friend, Mr Bisi Osuneye, who is also late. He added that when Ataga came into the project as an investor, he became a co-founder by adding so many ideas and they started working on the project until his demise last year June.

The witness also stated that as Chief Executive Officer of Super TV, Ataga usually convene management meetings on Mondays and Executive (EXCO) meetings on Tuesdays and they sometimes meet virtually using Microsoft link.

HOW I BECAME AWARE OF ATAGA’S DEATH

Narrating how he came to hear about his death, Saliu said that he got a call from Ataga on Monday 14, June 2021, that he was having stomach pain and he subsequently advised the Super TV boss to take his drugs and get some rest.
He said that much later, he needed to reach Ataga, in relation to some tasks and so he started to call him the next day from about 11am.

Saliu narrated, “I started calling him, he didn’t pick his calls neither did he return my message. I was surprised because the only thing he wants to hear is the billing App, with MTN, which is working now.

“Michael (Ataga) didn’t pick his calls, everybody started reaching out to me because the only way they can get him is through me and the only way they can reach me is through him; he still did not pick up my calls, this was about 3:30pm, on June 15, 2021.

“Then I got a WhatsApp message from him, after reading the message, I said to myself this is not Michael, talking to me. The message read ” I saw your missed call, I took some drugs that made me sleeping.’ The construction of that message was not Michael, because Michael was very fluent in English.

“I knew that was not Micheal’s typing and it was someone else but I sent him a screenshot of the billing system in the Super TV App, that it’s working and his response to me was ok, great, that was when I knew something was happening because Michael will jump up, pick up his phone, and call me immediately. So, I went outside to take fresh air and I started thinking where he could have been now that he is not picking up my calls.

“I called Gambo, he is a driver and personal assistant (PA) to Michael. I asked him, did you receive any call from Micheal? He said no that he has also been calling him too because he needed to pick up his clothes from the laundry that he was traveling with to Abuja.

“Gambo said he got a WhatsApp message, that was between 5 to 6pm, on June 15, 2021, then we started thinking of what could have happened to him. Another of Micheal’s friend, Okwuedo, who lives with us at Victoria Garden City (VGC), also asked of his whereabouts, I told him I got a WhatsApp message from Michael. So, Okwuedo said let him see the message, immediately he saw it, he said this is not Michael’s typing.

“Okwuedo and Gambo went to few places where they thought he could be. So, I went back to the office and on Wednesday 16, June 2021, I asked Gambo if they found him, he said no. I then called his cook at Banana Island, that was when I knew that he left home since Sunday 13, June 2021.

“I was keeping calm because he was going to Abuja on Thursday for his 50th birthday. I told myself that wherever he was, I knew that he would come and meet me, and we would go to the airport, stay with the girls (Michael’s daughters) and his wife for his 50th birthday. They were actually waiting for him; they were planning a surprise birthday party for him.

“So, I started suspecting something was wrong because he was supposed to come to VGC on the 15th, but he didn’t. I had to raise an alarm that I don’t know where Michael was.

“My last WhatsApp message to Michael on June 16, 2021, was at 10:30am and the message read ‘Bro, where are you? I am worried, my BP is rising.” The message was read, no response, I started getting calls from his family wanting to wish him happy 50th birthday.

“Calls started coming in, I did not really know what to say. How can I say I’m looking for a 50-year-old man? To me, it didn’t make any sense. I wanted to go and make a complaint at the VGC police station of a missing person, when at about 6:33 to 6:35am on Thursday, 17 June 2021, I got a call from Mrs Brenda Ataga, who happens to be his wife and the wife said where is Usifo?

“I had to tell her the truth that I have been looking for Michael since Tuesday. She was a bit upset with me that I was looking for someone since on Tuesday and I did nothing about it. I tried to explain to her that I was trying to make a complaint, 10 minutes later she called back and said Michael’s phones were traced to the University of Lagos, UNILAG Guest House.

“I didn’t take my bath; I just grabbed my car key and I started driving to UNILAG. A friend called me, and I told him I was driving to UNILAG. He asked how I knew Usifo was in UNILAG, I mentioned that the information came from Brenda.

“Mrs Brenda Ataga also called me and said there is a team of policemen that will meet me at UNILAG, to conduct the search. I got to UNILAG before them, so I went to the security and told them I was looking for a black Range Rover and they directed me to the guest house.

“The police joined me with two of his friends and staff (member) from my office. Mrs Ataga called me and was giving me the GPS coordinate from where the direction of the phone is. While going through Yaba, I got a call from our GTBank account officer, whom I asked to help me trace Michael’s transactions, so that I can know where exactly he is.

“He told me that Michael made transactions on Sunday and Monday. The Sunday transaction was to a lady Mrs Nkechi Mogbo, the owner of the service apartment (where the deceased was murdered). The account officer also said that the transaction that was made on Monday was to a Sterling Bank with the name Chidinma Ojukwu Adora. The account officer asked me what was happening, I said today is his birthday and I have been looking for him since Tuesday.

“So, I told him that since the owner of the service apartment uses GTB, he should send me her number, and he did. The police said I should give the number to Brenda so that it will not distract from our search of Michael.

“Only for Brenda to later call and tell me that Michael is dead. I fainted; it took the police to resuscitate me. When I was a bit okay, I called her and asked how? She said she called the number I sent to her, and the owner of the apartment said somebody was murdered that she should show his means of Identification if it was the person we were looking for.

“So, Brenda shared her husband’s picture to the woman and the owner of the service apartment said this person was murdered here and she is on her way to the police station at Maroko, so Brenda asked me to meet Mrs Nkechi Mogbo, at Panti.

“I met her with some of Michael’s friends at Panti, and we went to the scene of the incident where Michael was murdered. I didn’t want to believe that Michael was dead, I saw Michael’s belongings that the police brought out and we were not allowed inside.

“When I got to the mortuary, I saw Michael’s body, Michael was killed like a chicken, I saw a very big cut at the back of his neck. The wickedness, for me, is that the day I was with Michael’s corpse; they were still taking money from his account, that was 17 June 2021, exactly the day he was 50 years old.

“There were subsequent USSD transactions on his account until Brenda and I decided to close the account. I started tracking Chidinma, I started looking at Michael’s calls from 9mobile and MTN, Chidinma was calling him with a WhatsApp number.

“I traced the money that was transferred by Michael to Chidinma’s Sterling Bank and I supplied all the information to the police at Panti. Around 1am, on June 23, 2021, on a Wednesday, I got a message from Panti, that Chidinma has been arrested.

“Michael’s iPhone came with an original Apple pouch, when the police recovered the iPhone from Chidinma, it was replaced with a N1000 pouch; Michael’s laptop was also recovered. There were two iPhones, one iPhone 11 and one iPhone 7 or 8, was also recovered; I was told by the police that she gave the other iPhone to her sister,” Saliu recounted as he broke down in tears.

He further stated that there was a restaurant at Lekki – Angle Villa Restaurant that the deceased made a transaction on June 13.

“I shared the information with Michael’s friends, and they proceeded to Angle Villa, to confirm if a transaction was actually made. They confirmed that Michael came so we requested CCTV footage to know if he went alone, but we discovered that he came with Chidinma.

“The police at Panti took the video and I was surprised to see the CCTV footage all over the social media.”
During cross-examination by the counsel to Chidinma, Onwuka Egwu, the witness said he had no idea who handed the CCTV footage video to the police.

He said that the CCTV footage was trending prior to the arrest of Chidinma.

Justice Adesanya, in her ruling, adjourned until February 17 for the continuation of the trial.

Super TV CEO, Ataga’s body found in mortuary on birthday

Mr Rotimi Albert, a prosecution witness in the trial of Chidinma Ojukwu charged with murder of Super TV Chief Executive Officer, Usifo Ataga, has said that Ataga’s family found his body in a mortuary on his birthday.

Albert testified on Tuesday as the fourth prosecution witness.

He gave evidence before a Lagos High Court sitting at Tafawa Balewa Square.

He narrated how Ataga’s family and friends allegedly searched for him and found his body in a mortuary.

Ojukwu, an undergraduate, is facing trial alongside her sister, Chioma Egbuchu, and one Adedapo Quadri.

Albert, who introduced himself as a longtime schoolmate and friend of Ataga, said he wanted to call him on June 17, his birthday, to send birthday wishes to him.

Albert said that a friend had called him on June 16 and asked if he had seen or heard from Ataga.

He said that the friend told him on phone that no one had heard from Ataga since June 13.

The witness said he tried calling the deceased on phone, adding that his phone rang but there was no answer so he sent a WhatsApp message which delivered.

Albert said he observed that the deceased’s phone was active on WhatsApp.

“I was surprised when he didn’t return my calls nor reply my messages.

“I started calling other friends to ask if anyone had seen him; even his siblings abroad called me to ask about his whereabouts. I told them I was also worried.

“His wife and other family members were also looking for him because they were supposed to celebrate his birthday with him in Abuja,” he said.

The witness told the court that the wife of the deceased reported to the police about the worry.

He said that the phone of the deceased was tracked and it was noticed that the phone was last used at the University of Lagos’s Guest House.

According to him, on June 17, he and a friend went to the guest house to search for Ataga’s vehicle but the vehicle was not there.

He said that phone tracker also indicated that the phone was used at Aladimeji area of Lagos.

Albert said the tracking became difficult because the movement kept changing.

“In the course of all these, we got a call that Usifo is deceased and in a mortuary.

“We therefore went to Panti Police Station; there, we found out that the police had already visited the crime scene.

“After going to the crime scene, the police told us to go to the mortuary to identify the body; we went and confirmed it was Usifo Ataga.

“At the mortuary, I observed that he was assaulted with multiple stabbed wounds on his neck, abdomen, his side and leg.

“I also observed that his ribs had rope marks and deep indentations. That was how I got to know that my friend is deceased,” the witness said.

The witness was led in evidence by the Lagos State Director for Public Prosecutions, Mrs Adeyinka Adeyemi.

After his examination-in-chief, the witness was cross-examined by Ojukwu’s counsel, Mr Onwuka Egwu, and he said he was not the one checking and tracking the deceased’s phone and his bank transactions but a mutual friend.

The witness said that he made a statement at the police station which was tendered by defence counsel, and it was admitted as evidence.

Counsel to the second defendant (Quadri) and third defendant (Egbuchu), Mr Babatunde Busari and Mr A. O. Ogunsanya, respectively, said they did not have any questions for the witness.

The prosecutor, however, asked for an adjournment to enable him to bring more evidence.

Justice Yetunde Adesanya, consequently, adjourned the case until Feb. 14 for continuation of trial.

NAN reports that the three defendants were arraigned on Oct. 12 on a nine-count charge preferred by Lagos State Government.

Ojukwu and Quadri are facing the first to eight counts bordering on conspiracy, murder, stabbing, forgery, making of bank statements and stealing.

Egbuchu is facing the ninth count of stealing iPhone 7 belonging to Ataga.

The first and second defendants were alleged to have conspired and murdered Ataga on June 15, by stabbing him severally with a knife on the neck and chest.

The alleged murder took place at No. 19, Adewale Oshin St., Lekki Phase 1, Lagos.

The duo was also accused of committing forgery by procuring and making bank account statements purported to have been made by the deceased.

Mr Ifeoluwa confirmed that as dealers in buying and selling of phones, laptops and other accessories, the first defendant came to resell on June 18, 2021, a Macbook pro.

He also explained that after conducting due diligence on the items, he asked her to put in her password to access it, which she did and unlocked it.

He said further that he asked if she had a receipt of purchase for the laptop and if the laptop is for her? According to him, she replied that it was a gift from her boyfriend and that she has two laptops, so she needs to sell one to pay some bills.

He added that Chidinma asked for N600,000 but they were able to negotiate N495,000 and only after the forms were filled and documents were in his possession was the bank transfer made.

Abubakar Mohammed, the security guard at the apartment where Mr Usifo Ataga, Super TV Chief Executive Officer was murdered has said he was the person who discovered the corpse of the victim.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Mohammed made this known on Tuesday while testifying before a Lagos High Court sitting at the Tafawa Balewa Square.

Mohammed gave evidence as the second prosecution witness in the trial of an undergraduate, Chidinma Ojukwu (first defendant), and two others, for Ataga’s murder.

Ojukwu is facing trial along with her sister, Chioma Egbuchu, and one Adedapo Quadri.

At the resumed hearing, the witness narrated to the court how the defendant logged at the apartment where he worked as security man on Sunday June 13.

According to him, his employer, Mrs Nkechi Mogbo, informed him of a client who had contacted her for an apartment.

He said when the defendant showed up, he took her to inspect the place and later gave her the keys to the apartment when his employer gave him the instructions to do so.

Mohammed further narrated how Mr Usifo Ataga (victim) came to the apartment later in the night the same June 13.

The witness said the victim drove in, in a dark coloured Range Rover SUV and was allowed into the premises when the defendant came out of the gate and said “he is my person”.

He also said that the defendant and the victim went out that night and came back at about 11:30p.m.

“The defendant asked me to open the gate so that the victim would park his vehicle inside the premises which I did.

“On Tuesday night by 8p.m., the defendant came out and entered an Uber car and went out. I stayed outside till 12a.m, waiting for her to return but she didn’t, so I went to bed.

“On Wednesday, the vehicle that collects refuse came so I told the cleaner (named Confidence) to bring out all the dustbin from the apartment.

“Confidence came back and told me that the door at the defendant’s apartment was open, I went there, called out the man (victim) but there was no answer.

“I tried to push the door but something was blocking it, I peeped through the narrow opening and saw the victim’s dead body on the floor.

“My employer called me talking about another client whose rent has expired, I then told her about the incident,” the witness narrated.

The witness also narrated how his employer informed the police and how he was taken to the police station to make his statements.

He also told the court that while the defendant was at the apartment, she called him one night with a new number and not the private number she usually called with.

Mohammed said when the body was discovered, he stored that particular number on his phone and checked it on WhatsApp.

The witness said he discovered that the profile picture on that phone was the defendant’s own, he screen shot the picture.

According to him, he changed his own profile picture and sent a WhatsApp message to the defendant, after which the defendant removed her profile picture.

Mohammed said he gave the information to his employer.

He also narrated how the defendant called him with a private number asking him about the victim’s car.

Mohammed said: “Immediately I noticed she was the one calling, I asked why she has not returned since she went out, she answered that she went for a meeting and will be back”.

Mohammed was led in evidence by the prosecution counsel, Mrs Adeyinka Adeyemi, who is the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

However, due to time, the Judge, Justice Yetunde Adesanya, adjourned the case until Wednesday for cross examination.

The three defendants were arraigned on Oct. 12 on a nine-count charge preferred against them by Lagos State Government.

Ojukwu and Quadri are facing the first to eight counts bordering on conspiracy, murder, stabbing, forgery, making of bank statements and stealing.

The third defendant, Egbuchu, is facing the ninth count of stealing iPhone 7 belonging to the late Ataga.

The first and second defendants were alleged to have conspired and murdered Ataga on June 15, 2021, by stabbing him severally with a knife on the neck and chest.

The alleged murder took place at No. 19, Adewale Oshin St., Lekki Phase 1, Lagos.

The duo were also accused of committing forgery by procuring and making bank account statements purported to have been made by the deceased.

Super TV CEO murder: How Chidinma booked apartment where Ataga was killed – Apartment’s owner

The owner of the apartment where Mr Usifo Ataga, Super TV Chief Executive Officer, was allegedly murdered, on Monday said that she neither met Ataga nor his alleged murderers before the incident.

Nkechi Mogbo testified before a Lagos High Court sitting at the Tafawa Balewa Square.

She was being being cross-examined as the first prosecution witness in the trial of an undergraduate, Chidinma Ojukwu (first defendant), and two others for Ataga’s murder.

Ojukwu is facing trial along with her sister, Chioma Egbuchu, and one Adedapo Quadri.

Mogbo was cross-examined by Ojukwu’s counsel, Mr Onwuka Egwu.

On Nov. 11, the witness told the court that she operated a fully-furnished self-service apartment like a normal house with cable television subscription, a 24-hour power supply and a well-equipped kitchen.

Mogbo also narrated to the court how Ojukwu booked and lodged in the apartment with `a friend’, including how the body of Ataga was discovered at the apartment.

At the resumed trial on Monday, still said that Ojukwu informed her while booking for the apartment, adding that she told her that she would be lodging with a friend.

Mogbo said she could not collect Ojukwu’s International Passport for identification before lodging her because the defendant told her that her passport was with the Nigeria Immigration Service for purposes of COVID-19 isolation.

The witness said she did not ask for vaccination certificate because, “I didn’t think it was in my capacity to request for it’’.

“I was not previleged to know if she was a Nigerian due to the name (Jewel) and the foreign phone number she used while booking for the apartment,” Mogbo added.

The witness also said that when the payment for the apartment was made with Ataga’s name, she did not raise an eyebrow because payment could be made by a friend or family member.

She said that Ojukwu sent the receipt of the payment through WhatsApp.

“I did not know who the initiator of the payment was; the defendant sent to me the proof of payment less than a minute after the payment was made; so, there was nothing to arouse any suspicion.

“If I did, I would have called the person for further clarification.

“I had no idea who the lady (defendant) was. I never met her before. I had no idea the reason she lodged at the apartment except what I was told.

“I was only running a business just like any other hardworking Nigerian,” the witness said.

The witness also testified that the guest at the apartment adjacent to where the alleged murder occurred, had indicated a week earlier of his intention to leave the premises on June 17.

Mogbo denied being the one that informed the guest to leave the premises after the incident occurred.

The witness said that it was when the police asked her to give information about the building that she mentioned about the other guests at the apartment.

She confirmed that it was at a deputy commissioner of police’s office that she identified the defendant through a picture on her phone.

Mogbo also said it was the True Caller App on her phone that brought out the name (Chidinma Onah) which the defendant used in registering the private number she had called her (Mogbo) with earlier.

She also said that the defendant did not inform her that she would vacate the premises for her friend when she asked and paid for additional two days.

“When the body was found, my security guard called the defendant, she only said that she went for a meeting and would be back,” Mogbo said.

After the cross-examination, prosecution counsel, Mrs Adeyinka Adeyemi who is the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions, told the court that she had no re-examination.

Justice Yetunde Adesanya adjourned the case until Nov.16 for continuation of trial.

Chidinma transferred N50,000 for apartment from Ataga’s account after demise – Owner

Nkechi Mogbo, the owner of the short service apartment used by the murdered Chief Executive Officer of Super TV, Michael Ataga, has told the court how he rented her apartment.

A 300-level Mass Communication student of the University of Lagos, Chidinma Ojukwu, was accused of murdering the 50-year-old man.

TheNewsGuru reports that Chidinma and two others, Adedapo Quadri and Chioma Egbuchu, are undergoing trial before Justice Yetunde Adesanya of the Lagos State High Court sitting at the Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos State.

Mogbo, while testifying on Thursday, told the court that she had a self-service apartment rented out for short service accommodation.

She said, “The apartment is fully furnished with cable TV, 24-hour power services, and a well-equipped kitchen. Couples and people from out of town who come in for weddings regularly book the apartment online or through referrals from agents.”

The witness, while being led in evidence in chief by the Director of Public Prosecutions, Mrs Adeyinka Adeyemi, said, “On June 13, around 4pm, a lady called me on the telephone with a private number and requested for the apartment. The lady requested to see the apartment to ensure that the facilities were up to the standard she needed.”

The witness said after visiting the apartment, the lady, through WhatsApp message, confirmed that she would take the apartment for three days.

The witness stated that Chidinma “left the service apartment before the day she was supposed to leave.”

Mogbo added, “She mentioned that her name was Jewel and I forwarded payment details, thereafter, she sent proof of payment of N125,000, to my WhatsApp.

“The payment was made through a commercial bank account of one Mr Micheal Usifo, and my name as recipient.”

She further told the court that after two days, on June 15 around 5.30pm, Chidinma sent another message to her WhatsApp, stating that her friend would stay for two more days.

The witness added that the payment was made from Ataga’s GTB account, adding that later, when she called her security guard for another issue, the guard told her that “a body was found on the ground of the apartment.”

“I tried to reach the lady on the telephone, but she cut the call. She then sent a message to me that she was in a meeting.

“I sent a message that the payment which was made in the morning wasn’t credited to me,” the witness said.

She stated that Chidinma replied that her friend would make another payment, adding that few minutes later, she got another N50,000 from Ataga’s account.

“After a couple of hours, I sent her a message that I have received the initial payment of N50,000 and that I have given the security man the extra N50,000 for her to pick it up.

“She didn’t come; she sent a message that she would use it to pay for two more days for her friend. I reported the incident at the Maroko Police Station,” the witness said.

Mogbo then told the court that she was taken to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Bureau in Panti, Yaba, where she spent seven days in custody to help police do a proper investigation.

She said she could not initially identify Chidinma when she was brought to the station, adding that it was with the aid of a picture she got from her phone that she was able to identify the suspect.

She also stated that her conversations with the first defendant were done through WhatsApp.

The DPP tendered the printed copy of the WhatsApp conversation as evidence.

However, the first defendant’s counsel, Mr Onwuka Egbu, objected to the admissibility of the document.

He said, “It is a public document which must be certified before it can be used as evidence.”

Justice Adesanya overruled Egbu and admitted the document as evidence.

Egbu then asked the court for an adjournment to enable him to study the documents, as well as to prepare for the cross-examination of the witness.

The judge adjourned the case till November, 15, 2021.
