‘Heads should roll’: Reno Omokri reacts as murder suspect, Chidinma wins Miss Cell 2022

Lawyer and former presidential aide, Reno Omokri has criticised the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) for allowing a murder suspect, Chidinma Ojukwu, to take part in a beauty pageant organised for inmates on Tuesday, stressing that a prison facility should be a place of punishment and rehabilitation rather than fun.

Ojukwu, a 300-level Mass Communication student of the University of Lagos who emerged winner of the pageantry, is being held as the prime suspect in the murder of Super TV Chief Executive Officer, Usifo Ataga, which occurred in June last year.

“Prison is a place of punishment and rehabilitation. Once it becomes a place of fun, the purpose is defeated. How will Usifo’s family feel to see Chidinma prancing about as a beauty queen in prison? Heads should roll, except Chidinma has a prison official sugar zaddy,” Omokri said.

However, the NCoS has now responded saying that the contest was organised as part of events to mark the International Women’s Day celebration, and was open to all female inmates whether convicted or awaiting trial.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, Rotimi Oladokun denied seeing the photos but told The Nation that “the female custodial facilities commemorated International Women’s Day with inmates, various inmates without distinction or discrimination against anybody”.

BREAKING: Murder trial of Usofor Ataga stalled

Trial of an undergraduate, Chidinma Ojukwu, for the murder of Mr Usifo Ataga, Chief Executive Officer of Super TV, was on Monday stalled due to absence of a prosecution witness.

Ojukwu is standing trial before a Lagos High Court sitting at the Tarfa Tafawa Balewa Square.

She is charged with murder, stealing and forgery alongside her sister, Chioma Egbuchu, and one Adedapo Quadri.

On Monday, prosecution counsel, Mrs A. O. Oluwafemi, also Deputy Director of Lagos State Directorate Public Prosecutions, told the court that a prosecution witness, billed to testify, was not in court.

She prayed that earlier dates for continuation of hearing of the case be vacated to enable prosecution to get toxicology and Deoxyribonucleic Acid results needed for the trial.

Oluwafemi said the results were not available yet, adding that the next witness would be examined with those documents.

Justice Yetunde Adesanya consequently vacated the dates, and adjourned the proceedings until April 25 for the continuation of trial.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that at the last adjourned date, Feb. 17, an Investigative Police Officer, Insp Ibrahim Isaka, gave evidence.

Isiaka, the sixth prosecution witness, narrated how police allegedly discovered Usifo Ataga in the pool of his own blood on June 16, 2021.

The witness said that the police consequently called the Emergency Unit at Yaba General Hospital and evacuated Ataga’s corpse.

He told the court that on June 16, 2021, a case of murder was reported at his place of work, Maroko Police Station.

Isiaka testified that at 11:30 p.m. one Mrs Nkechi Mogbo came to the station and reported that a body was discovered at her short-service facility where people lodged.

He testified that Mogbo narrated to the police that the security guard at the facility informed her that the body of a man who lodged in the facility was discovered lying in the pool of his blood.

The witness said that Mogbo also told the police that a cleaner in the facility went to clean the apartment but there was no response from the people who lodged there.

He said that the security guard and the cleaner forcefully opened the door and discovered Ataga in a pool of blood.

The witness said the police, including the divisional police officer and the divisional crime officer, went to the crime scene.

Isiaka said that the police found some clothes as well as a travelling bag in the apartment and collected the items for investigation.

The three defendants were arraigned on Oct. 12 on a nine-count charge preferred by Lagos State Government.

Ojukwu and Quadri are facing the first to eight counts bordering on conspiracy, murder, stabbing, forgery, making of bank statements and stealing.

The third defendant, Egbuchu, is facing the ninth count – stealing of iPhone 7 belonging to the late Ataga.

Ojukwu and Quadri are alleged to have conspired and murdered Ataga on June 15, 2021, by stabbing him several times with a knife on the neck and chest.

The alleged murder took place at No. 19, Adewale Oshin St., Lekki Phase 1, Lagos.

The duo was also accused of committing forgery by procuring and making bank account statements purported to have been made by the deceased.

Investigative Police Officer, Insp Ibrahim Isaka, on Thursday narrated how police allegedly discovered Usifo Ataga, Chief Executive Officer of Super TV, in the pool of his blood.

Isiaka, the sixth prosecution witness, testified in the trial of Chidinma Ojukwu for alleged murder of Ataga, before a Lagos High Court sitting at Tafawa Balewa Square.

The witness said that the police consequently called the emergency Unit at Yaba General Hospital and evacuated Ataga’s corpse.

Ojukwu is standing trial alongside her sister, Chioma Egbuchu, and one Adedapo Quadri, for alleged murder, stealing and forgery.

Isiaka, who said he had worked as a police personnel for 28 years, told the court that on June 16, 2021, a case of murder was reported at his place of work, Maroko Police Station.

According to him, at 11:30 p.m., one Mrs Nkechi Mogbo, came to the station and reported that a body was discovered at her short-service facility where people lodged.

He said that the security guard and the cleaner forcefully opened the door and discovered Ataga in the pool of blood.

The witness said the police including the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) and the Divisional Crime Officer (DCO) went to the crime scene.

“The DPO immediately called the Emergency Unit at Yaba General Hospital, the hospital came and evacuated the corpse.

“The following morning, June 17, the commissioner of police advised that the case be transferred to the Homicide Section, Panti,” Isiaka said.

He said that a police team from Panti asked him to follow the team to the crime scene and he did.

Isiaka said that the police found some clothes and a travelling bag in the apartment and collected the items for investigation.

He said that he wrote a statement and handed the case file to the police at Panti.

Prosecution counsel, Mrs A. O. Oluwafemi, also Deputy Director of Lagos State Directorate Public Prosecutions, sought to tender the witness’s statement as evidence but Quadri’s counsel, Mr Babatunde Busari, objected.

Busari said that the statement was extrajudicial (a statement made outside the court) and, therefore, not admissible.

He cited some Supreme Court and Appeal Court decisions to support his objection.

Other defence counsel, Mr Onwuka Egwu for Ojukwu, and Mr O. A. Ogunsanya for Egbuchu, did not object to tendering of the statement.

Justice Yetunde Adesanya, however, overruled the objection, saying that it failed.

After the ruling, counsel to Ojukwu, cross-examined the witness during which he testified that the case was assigned to him by a charge room officer.

He added that he carried out his investigations subject to instructions given to him by the DPO and DCO.

After the cross-examination, Justice Adesanya adjourned the case until Feb. 21 for continuation of trial.

The three defendants were arraigned on Oct. 12 on a nine-count charge preferred against them by Lagos State Government.

Ojukwu and Quadri are facing the first to eight counts bordering on conspiracy, murder, stabbing, forgery, making of bank statements and stealing.

The third defendant, Egbuchu, is facing the ninth count of stealing iPhone 7 belonging to the late Ataga.

The first and second defendants were alleged to have conspired and murdered Ataga on June 15, 2021, by stabbing him severally with a knife on the neck and chest.

The alleged murder took place at No. 19, Adewale Oshin St., Lekki Phase 1, Lagos.

The duo was also accused of committing forgery by procuring and making bank account statements purported to have been made by the deceased.

Murder of Super TV CEO: Trial of Chidinma stalled

Trial of Chidinma Ojukwu charged with murder of the Super TV Chief Executive Officer, Usifo Ataga, was on Monday stalled due to prosecution witness’s lack of composure.

Ojukwu, a third year Mass Communication student of the University of Lagos, is standing trial before a Lagos High Court.

The undergraduate is facing trial along with her sister, Chioma Egbuchu, and one Adedapo Quadri.

On Monday, Lagos State counsel, Mr Yusuf Sule, told the court that the fourth prosecution witness arrived at the court from Asaba in the morning and was not composed to testify.

“We will be asking for an adjournment till tomorrow, Nov. 30, to enable the witness to settle down,” he said.

Ojukwu’s counsel, Mr Onwuka Egwu, did not object to the application.

Quadri’s counsel, Mr Babatunde Busari, also did not oppose the application but said that prosecution should have called other witnesses.

Egbuchu’s counsel, Mr O.A. Ogunsanya, submitted that the adjournment would be in the interest of justice.

Justice Yetunde Adesanya consequently granted the oral application and adjourned the case until Tuesday for continuation of trial.

At the last adjourned date, a businessman and the third prosecution witness, Mr Ifeoluwa Oluwo, testified that he bought the late Ataga’s Apple MacBook laptop from Ojukwu, for N495, 000.

The witness said that he bought the laptop from Ojukwu on June 18, after negotiations.

He told the court that it was after the sale of the laptop that he saw Ojukwu’s face on social media regarding the alleged murder and, therefore kept the transaction documents well.

The three defendants were arraigned on Oct. 12 on a nine-count charge preferred by Lagos State Government.

Ojukwu and Quadri are facing the first to eight counts of the charge which border on conspiracy, murder, stabbing, forgery, making of bank statements and stealing.

The third defendant, Egbuchu, is facing the ninth count which is stealing of iPhone 7 belonging to Ataga.

JUST IN: Chidinma, one other suspect plead not guilty to Super TV CEO, Usifo Ataga’s murder

Chidinma Ojukwu has pleaded not guilty to the murder of Super TV CEO, Usifo Ataga.

The 22-year-old did so on Tuesday when she and one Adedapo Quadri, who are the key suspects in the murder case were arraigned before Justice Yetunde Adesanya of the Lagos State High Court sitting at the Tafawa Balewa Square.

Both suspects pleaded not guilty to eight counts bordering on the offences of murder, forgery and stealing.

Chidinma’s sister, Egbuchu Chioma, was also arraigned, as an iPhone 7 belonging to the late Ataga, was said to have been recovered from her.

Chioma, however, pleaded not guilty to the 9th count of being in possession of the stolen property.

They are being prosecuted by the Lagos State Department of Public Prosecution, Mrs Olayinka Adeyemi.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG recalls that when Chidinma was arrested on June 24, she had initially admitted to killing Usifo after his lifeless body was found in a pool of blood with multiple stab wounds at a hotel in the Lekki area of Lagos.

But contrary to her initial statements that she had stabbed Ataga in self-defense, the 22-year-old later in an interview in July, denied having anything to do with his death.

She explained that while they were lodged together in the short-let apartment, she briefly stepped out to buy some things only to return to his lifeless body.

“As I was leaving the apartment, he stood up to lock the door. When I came back, I knocked but there was no response. Then I opened the door and realized it wasn’t locked,” Chidinma said.

“The duvet was on the floor and pillows. The couch was facing the door and the bed was stained with blood and the floor where he was. Music was on, the TV was on. The room was in disarray like someone broke in.

“Then I saw him on the floor, I didn’t know what to do. I was afraid. I thought if I raised an alarm I would be arrested because we were the only people in the room”.

Also speaking in the interview, a cousin of the deceased said the state in which he later found the corpse was very questionable. According to him, the extent of the stab wounds as well as the way Ataga’s hands were tied, was so bad that the act could not have been done by Chidinma alone.

She, on the other hand, claimed that the only reason she initially took responsibility for the incident was that it was just both of them in the room and she felt that no one would believe her story.

“I never had anything to do with his death. I didn’t involve anybody. I don’t know who must have come into the apartment. Definitely, somebody did but I don’t who the person is. I don’t know what happened when I left to buy food,” she said.

I didn’t kill Super TV CEO — UNILAG student makes fresh confession

Chidinma Ojukwu, the 21-year-old student of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), has debunked killing Usifo Ataga, Super TV CEO — a few weeks after claiming responsibility for his demise.

TheNewsGuru recalls that Chidinma had last month confessed to stabbing Ataga “twice on the neck side” while she was being paraded by the Lagos state police command.

The student had claimed that the businessman had forcefully had sex with her the first time but a dispute ensued after he attempted it again.

“I threw the knife to the bed and he was going for it but I also went for it. He dragged the knife with me and it broke and he fell on the floor,” she had said.

However in a shocking new interview with Crime Fighters, Chidinma said she admitted to killing Ataga at the time because of pressure and the fact that nobody believed her.

The student also claimed that she had met the deceased in a pool of his own blood when she returned from where she had gone to get food and drugs for the pair.

Chidinma noted that the fear of being arrested by the police informed her decision not to report the matter before she left the apartment for her house.

“I didn’t involve anybody. I don’t know who must have come into the apartment. Definitely, somebody did that but I don’t know who that person is. I don’t know what happened when I left the room to buy food. Because of what I did after by not alerting the police and also withdrawing money from his account, I feel guilty for what happened but I did not kill him,” she said.

“I believe someone knew where we were and waited till I left before they entered. Due to pressure and insistence of the security operatives that nobody entered the room apart from the two, I resolved that since no one believed me, let me just take the blame.”

Chidinma also said that nobody is influencing her claim as alleged in some quarters, explaining that she has not communicated with anyone from her family since her arrest.

“No one is influencing my statements. I have not spoken to anyone since my arrest, not even my relation or anybody close to me,” she added.

She also claimed that her decision to withdraw money from Ataga’s account after his death was because the deceased had promised her the amount before the unfortunate incident.

“I just withdrew the money because he had already promised me, it’s not like I had anything to do with his death. I don’t have anything to do with his death,” she added.

But reacting, Hakeem Odumosu, the Lagos police commissioner, likened her new stance to an “afterthought.”

The CP said the command will leave no stone unturned to unravel the actual circumstances that led to Ataga’s death and bring those behind his murder to book.

Super TV CEO: Why police freed suspect’s father —Lagos CP

The Lagos State Police Command has released the father of 21-year-old student of the University of Lagos, who purportedly stabbed the Chief Executive Officer of Super TV, Usifo Ataga, to death.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Hakeem Odumosu, in a chat with Punch said the suspect’s father and one Nkechi Mogbo, have been released on bail.

It was gathered that Chidinma Ojukwu’s father was detained for hampering his daughter’s arrest at their residence in the Alagomeji area of the state.

Before Chidinma’s arrest, Mogbo had been in police custody after findings showed that she operated the service apartment where the University of Lagos undergraduate allegedly killed Ataga.

The suspect, while being paraded at the command headquarters in Ikeja on Thursday, confessed to have committed the crime.

Odumosu said though investigation was uncompleted, an order had been given for Mogbo’s release on bail, adding that Chidinma’s father had also been released.

He stated that Chidinma’s account of how she committed the crime exonerated her father and Mogbo.

Odumosu said, “Chidinma’s statement exonerated her father as she said that he was not aware of the incident. We released him. Also, the lady in our custody, one Mrs Nkechi Mogbo, who leased the flat from the property owner and used it for a service apartment, has been released on bail.

“After Magbo was arrested, she assisted the police because of the information she gave us. Now that we got the principal suspect, and the fact that the principal suspect confessed that she singularly committed the act, and equally went further to explain that she never met Nkechi Mogbo, but that she only phoned her and that they transacted all the business online, I have ordered her release on bail while we continue our investigation.

“However, if any other thing during the investigation points to her, bail is not the end of the case and we will bring her back.”

Super TV CEO: Suspect’s father detained, lecturers, classmates surprised

Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested the father Chidinma Ojukwu, who allegedly stabbed the Chief Executive Officer of Super TV, Usifo Ataga, to death.

A top police source, who pleaded anonymity because he was not authorized to speak on the matter, told in a chat with Punch noted that the suspect and her father were arrested at their residence, No. 57 Akinwunmi Street, Alagomeji, Yaba, on Wednesday.

The source said the father was arrested for protesting Chidinma’s arrest and for becoming violent with policemen, who went to apprehend her.

The source added that the man did not believe that his daughter committed any crime until she confessed on Thursday, adding that he was being apprehended at the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Panti, Yaba.

“She (Chidinma) stays with her dad. Her dad and mom don’t live together. Her father was arrested on Wednesday, because he resisted his daughter’s arrest. He never believed that his daughter committed any crime until Thursday. He is at Panti as we speak, but he was not paraded today (Thursday),” the source stated.

TheNewsGuru reports that Chidinma, who claimed to be a 300-level student in the Department of Mass Communication, University of Lagos, confessed to stabbing Ataga to death while being paraded at the state police command headquarters, Ikeja,.

A lecturer in the department, who spoke on condition of anonymity said, “I know her (Chidinma) because of her beauty and innocent look. She is an introvert to the core.

“Left for her striking beauty, she is not likely to be noticed by anyone, because she doesn’t talk in class.”

One of the peers, who spoke on condition of anonymity said, “Yes, she (Chidinma) is a 300-level part time student of Mass Communication. I know her, but we are not on talking terms; she doesn’t interact with many people. She is a recluse.

“She is a cool girl, who comes for lectures and leave afterwards; she has few friends, who she talks to. I don’t really know much about her.”

Another student said he had not seen her in the current semester, adding that their lectures could not hold on Thursday as the lecturers did not turn up.

“I have not seen her this semester since we resumed on May 10. We were supposed to have lectures today, but the lecturers did not come. Likewise, her issue has been a major topic on our WhatsApp platform; it was a chaotic debate as members took sides,” he said.
