Sen. Nnamani berates proponents of Interim National Govt

Sen. Chimaroke Nnamani has berated proponents of Interim National Government (ING), describing it as treasonable and an affront to sensibility of Nigerians.

Nnamani, in a statement on Thursday in Abuja said that ING was absurd and had no place in modern day democratic rule, saying that those behind the plot were enemies of Nigeria.

“The presidential election has been conducted and a winner has been declared.

“Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu will be sworn in as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on May 29, Interim government is a needless distraction.

“Asiwaju will be sworn in on May 29, and he will hit the ground running.’’

Nnamani believes that Tinubu would not deviate from his avowed commitment to the programmes of social protection, national transformation and restructuring.

He expressed optimism that a Tinubu led administration would address critical infrastructural development, youth unemployment, women empowerment and the challenges facing the girl-child.

The former governor of Enugu state predicted that a Tinubu led administration would ensure budget enhancements needed to address complex issues in health, education, social service sectors including portable drinking water and environmental sanitation.

He expressed optimism that the forthcoming administration would rejuvenate international recognitions and awareness that would attract other nations to invest in Nigeria and consequently turn the nation’s economy around.

He enjoined Nigerians across the divide to support the incoming administration which he hoped would be a government of national unity where no section of Nigeria would be marginalised or shortchanged in the scheme of things.

“Ayu’s leadership brought misfortune to PDP” -Nnamani

Former Enugu Governor, Senator Chimaroke Nnamani, has called on the national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, to vacate office forthwith, stressing that his leadership brought misfortune to the party.

Nnamani, in a statement in Abuja, noted that Ayu’s leadership has brought misfortune to the PDP because of his alleged ineptitude, greed and wickedness.

He said: “Ayu is just an unmitigated disaster. His leadership is an evil that befell the PDP. The only option left is to show him the exit door.

Ayu lacks the moral right to stay a day longer in office as National Chairman. If he still has any modicum of honour, he should quit immediately

“How can Ayu be relying on the PDP Constitution, section 57 (7), to seek refuge when he had flagrantly subverted the same section to sack key stakeholders of the party including me.”

“Section 57(7) of the PDP Constitution stipulates that “Notwithstanding any other provision relating to discipline, no executive committee at any level, except the National Executive Committee (NEC), shall entertain any question of discipline as may relate or concern a member of the National Executive Committee, Deputy Governors or members of the National Assembly.”

He recalled the Ayu-led NWC relied on the aforementioned section to expel him when it obviously lacked the power to do so pointing out that Ayu’s case now is akin to the evil that men do lives with them.

Nnamani said: “Ayu lacks the moral right to stay a day longer in office as National Chairman. If he still has any modicum of honour, he should quit immediately.

“Look at the shame he has brought on the PDP. Look at the array of key stakeholders Ayu has sacked or forced to leave the party. Except Ayu is a man without shame or honour, he has no business remaining in office.”

He urged the NEC and the Board of Trustees (BOT) of the party to wade in to show Ayu the exit door in order to save the party from complete extinction.

    BREAKING: Chimaroke Nnamani quits PDP

Sen. Chimaroke Nnamani, representing Enugu-East Senatorial District has withdrawn his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Nnamani, a former Gov. of Enugu State who announced his exit from the PDP in a statement in Abuja on Monday, expressed appreciation to his constituents for the unalloyed support over the years.

According to Nnamani, he has consulted with his associates and constituents and has decided to quit the PDP on account of irreconcilable differences with the national leadership of the party.

He said that he had moved on and hoped that his modest contributions to the development of his constituency would be the building blocks on which his successors could build on.

Nnamani thanked Nigerians, especially the ‘Ebeano’ political family and urged them to remain steadfast in the years ahead.

The former governor reaffirmed his acquaintance with the President-elect Sen. Bola Tinubu and promised to continue to partner with him.

He expressed optimism that a Tinubu-led administration would promote good governance, rule of law and human rights for the interest of all Nigerians.

Nnamani had in the build up to the 2023 general elections, insisted that he won’t rescind his decision to support the then presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Tinubu, now President-elect.

According to Nnamani, he decided to align with Tinubu, because the PDP has breached its Constitution by subverting the principle of power rotation.

Nnamani lost his reelection bid to the Senate to Labour Party (LP) candidate, Kelvin Chukwu.

The LP candidate polled 69,136 to beat Nnamani of the PDP, who scored 48, 701 votes.

Peace Accord: Party supporters attacked in Enugu, LP’s senatorial candidate feared dead

Barely three days to the election, disturbing videos showing the charred remains of campaign vehicles belonging to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP) emerged on Wednesday, few hours after the major presidential candidates and parties taking part in Saturday’s election signed a Peace Accord in Abuja.

One of the vehicles which resembled a 14 seater Toyota Hiace bus had the name of the PDP member representing Enugu North and South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives Honourable Ofor Chukwuegbo, branded on it, while the other sienna bus had stickers of the name of LP’s Senatorial candidate for Enugu East Oyibo Chukwu.

Unconfirmed reports indicate that the eight occupants of the sienna bus were returning from a campaign held in Agbani and heading to Amuri when they were shot dead and the vehicle set on fire.

It is not immediately clear whether Chukwu was a passenger in the ill-fated vehicle, but some reports claimed he was also shot dead.

Reacting to these reports, former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria Kingsley Moghalu took to his twitter account to mourn his former classmate at the University of Nigeria.

He wrote: “What a tragedy! I’m deeply saddened. Oyibo was my classmate at the University of Nigeria (Enugu Campus) Law Faculty. Does politics have to be this desperate and violent? May his soul rest in peace. My sincere condolences to Oyibo Chukwu’s family.”

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), also condemned the attack and called on security agencies to promptly investigate the incident and ensure that the perpetrators are prosecuted.

“The Buhari administration must promptly investigate the reported killing of the Labour Party candidate for Enugu East Senatorial district, Oyibo Chukwu in Enugu while returning from a campaign trip. The perpetrators must be immediately arrested and prosecuted,” SERAP demanded.

A former governor of the state Chimaroke Nnamani, who was expelled from the PDP on February 10th for alleged anti-party activities, but had insisted he is still the party’s candidate for the Enugu East senatorial district in Saturday’s election and party supporters have also expressed shock and anger over the attacks.

Meanwhile, during the signing of the Peace Agreement, the chairman of the National Peace Committee Abdulsalami Abubakar, expressed concern about the lack of compliance by major political parties to the National Peace Accord signed in September 2022.

Abubakar noted that 44 per cent of violations were carried out by party spokespersons, while party members, presidential candidates and hard-core supporters were also found guilty of violating the Peace Agreement in varying degrees.

The new agreement signed on Wednesday, contains clauses that commit candidates and political parties to engage their supporters and ensure a violence-free electioneering process that is also devoid of other vices such as hate speech.

The Peace Accord led Abubakar’s Committee, was supported by the Nigerian government and its international partners including the European Union and the United Nations.

Expelled Nnamani remains adamant, says he is still in PDP

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has approved the expulsion of former Governor of Enugu State, Sen. Chimaroke Nnamani, and six others from the party.

The party stated this in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, in Abuja on Friday.

The six others expelled from the party, according to Ologunagba, are Chris Ogbu (Imo State), Ajijola Oladimeji (Ekiti Central), Olayinka Olalere (Ekiti Central II), Fayose John (Ekiti Central I), Akerele Oluyinka (Ekiti North I) and Emiola Adenike Jennifer (Ekiti South II).

He said that the seven members were expelled for anti-party activities and other grave offences in violation of the Constitution of the PDP (as amended in 2017).

Ologunagba said that the expulsion of Nnamani, who is currently representing Enugu Central senatorial district at the Senate, and six others was approved by the NEC at it 66th meeting on Friday.

“The decision of the NWC is sequel to the recommendation of the National Disciplinary Committee and pursuant to Sections 58 and 59 (1)(g) of the PDP Constitution (as amended in 2017).’’

Ologunagba said that the expulsion took effective from Friday, Feb. 10.

He charged all PDP members across the country to remain united and focused on the mission of the party to rescue, rebuild and redirect the nation.

Meanwhile, Nnamani, in a swift reaction, described his expulsion as a nullity, saying the NWC has no powers to suspend or expel him from the party.

Nnamani, in a letter to the party, through his Counsel, Olusegun Jolaawo, said that the NWC did not follow due process and strict compliance with the provisions of the PDP Constitution.

The counsel said that based on Articles 57(7) and 59(3) of the PDP Constitution, no organ of the party, including the NWC, has the competence to entertain any question of discipline against Nnamani.

He said only a properly constituted National Executive Committee of the party could entertain such question of discipline against him.

My expulsion a nullity, Sen. Nnamani blasts PDP

Meanwhile, Sen. Chimaroke Nnamani (PDP-Enugu) has said he is still in the PDP in spite of his purported suspension by the NWC.

Nnamani, who represents Enugu-East at the National Assembly said this in a statement on Friday in Abuja.

He said that the NWC had no powers to suspend or expel him from the party.

Nnamani, also a former governor of Enugu State said the NWC did not follow due process in suspending him from the party as it was not in compliance with the provisions of the PDP Constitution.

“The NWC lack powers to suspend or expel me from the party as a member of the National Assembly,” he said.

Nnamani said that he was neither invited nor given the opportunity to be heard before the decision against him was taken.

He said that going by article 57(6) of the PDP constitution, the NWC lacks the requisite powers to entertain any question of discipline against him to the extent of suspending or expelling him from the party.

Nnamani said the proceeding and decision reached at the NWC meeting on 20 Jan was both illegal and a nullity and urged the party to reconsider the action.

”Your proposed disciplinary hearing of Feb. 8 is wholly erected on illegality and your committee equally has no powers under the Constitution of the party to invite me for the purpose of entertaining any disciplinary matter against me,” Nnamani said.

  • Why I’m supporting Tinubu for president – PDP senator Nnamani

Why I’m supporting Tinubu for president – PDP senator Nnamani

Chimaroke Nnamani, senator representing Enugu East Senatorial District has given the reason for supporting the opposition party, APC’s presidential candidate Asiwaju Bola Tinubu in the upcoming election in February.

The Enugu senator noted PDP’s refusal to comply with its party constitution gave him the room to exercise his right of freedom of choice and association for supporting Tinubu.

Nnamani, who is seeking re-election for the Enugu East senatorial seat on the platform of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) was on January 20 suspended by the leadership of the PDP for alleged anti-party activities.

But, in a statement, yesterday, the former Enugu State governor derided the PDP, describing his suspension “penkelemesi” (peculiar mess) that will collapse in no time.

Nnamani said: “My decision to pitch tent with Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu was necessitated by the PDP’s refusal to comply with its own constitution to wit; those key political offices should at all times be rotated between the South and North to guarantee harmony, peace, fairness, equity, and justice.

“As it is now, there is no fairness, justice and equity in the PDP because both the presidential candidate and the national chairman are from the same region. I am only exercising my right of freedom of choice and association. On this score, I stand with Tinubu.” Senator Nnamani urged the leadership of the PDP to put its house in order, insisting that his suspension by the party lacked both moral and constitutional backing.

  • Why I’m aligning with Tinubu – Chimaroke Nnamani

Why I’m aligning with Tinubu – Chimaroke Nnamani

Sen. Chimaroke Nnamani, says he decided to align with Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, because the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has breached its Constitution, by subverting the principle of power rotation.

Nnamani said this in a statement on Sunday in Abuja.

He said the PDP’s constitution prescribed that key political offices be rotated between the North and the south to ensure equity, justice and fairness.

”Conscious of the need to share and rotate key political offices among the diverse people of our country, the PDP constitution clearly stated that it shall adhere at all times to the policy of the rotation and zoning of the party and public elective offices in pursuance of the principle of equity , justice and fairness.

“Even when the PDP national Chairman Iyorchia Ayu made a firm commitment to step down should a Northerner emerge as presidential candidate for 2023 election, the leadership jettisoned the constitutional provision and turned the logic upside down.

“Recalled that the PDP in 2019 allowed the North to contest the primaries for the presidency in Port Harcourt , Rivers in which Atiku Abubakar clinched the ticket and contested the election.

“It was expected that in 2023, the PDP in a corresponding manner allows the South to contest for the plum position, but the party in its decision open the contest for both the Northern and Southern aspirants.

“In a twist of events and political maneuvering Atiku Abubakar got the ticket again,” Nnamani said.

He added: “The outcome of the presidential primaries infuriated southern PDP faithful including the G.5 Governors who insist on respecting the North/ South rotation principle.”

Nnamani said the action of the PDP amounted to injustice and lack of equity, saying that it was morally wrong to leave power in the north after President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure in 2023.

The former governor of Enugu State said that Buhari in recognition of the North and South power rotation created a window for political balancing that enabled Tinubu to emerge as APC presidential candidate.

“Having critically examined the situation , I found Bola Tinubu as the preferred candidate from the south to foot the bill in 2023,” he said.

  • 2023: Why Nigerian youths need Bola Tinubu – Sen Nnamani

2023: Why Nigerian youths need Bola Tinubu – Sen Nnamani

Sen. Chimaroke Nnamani (APC-Enugu) has adduced reasons Nigerian youths should see All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Candidate, Bola Tinubu, as the preferred option.

Nnamani said  that Tinubu, on assumption of office in 1999, embarked on series of sustainable policies towards addressing the high unemployment rate, and youth issues in 1999.

According to Nnamani in his series of tweets, #Citi_ Boy series, noted that “Lagos state at the period saw a significant influx of youths looking for better livelihood .

He said Tinubu recognised that it would have been disastrous if left unattended, and therefore launched waves of reforms that re-invigorated the economy.

He said Tinubu ensured that the vast majority of the working population, who were primarily youths, were employed.

He stated that Tinubu also established the anti-drug misuse campaign initiative to inform adolescents about the risks associated with illicit drugs use, pointing out that pervasive drug abuse epidemic had successfully destroyed many young people.

Nnamani said Lagos State under Tinubu, distributed over one million Naira in grants to each of the registered voluntary youth organisations, as tokens of appreciation for their helpful efforts at reorientation and to encourage them to be more productive.

“Tinubu also increased the annual funding for the rehabilitation agencies to over N3 million and subsequently created youth centres to participate in educational and recreational activities.”

According to him, Tinubu’s administration spent N14 million and N4 million respectively, to renovate the Onikan youth centre on Lagos Island and the Akinwunmi Youth Centre in Ikeja, while recreational facilities that had been abandoned for years were renovated.

Nnamani pointed out that the Akowonjo Open Space received a total investment of N7 million whereas the long-abandoned Igbogbo Open Space in Ikorodu was completely rehabilitated.

“Vocational training centers were developed by Tinubu’s administration in March 2003 to rehabilitate hoodlums, neighborhood boys, and the homeless who were desirous of making a turning point in their lives.”

He said Tinubu achieveed this by economically empowering them through training in professions like carpentry, shoemaking, hair dressing and tie-and-dye.

He said the vocational centres project, which Tinubu launched in November 2005, also received the international millennium award for sustaining human development.

He said youth self-employment and population education programmes were launched, explaining that the major goal was to build powerful youth organizations that launched SMEs that provided income for young people and inspired many others.

Nnamani stated that a free education initiative for all Lagos State public schools was also introduced by Tinubu in 2000, which included free registration for the WAEC and NECO exams.

Tinubu, he noted, also “set up six job registration centres for all unemployed persons looking for meaningful employment or business opportunities.

“Along with that, he founded the LASU Information, Communication, and Technology Centre (ICT).

“This welfare Programme did not exclude the homeless nor illicit drug users.

” More than 300,000 of these Nigerians received succor in the Rehabilitation and Training Centre in Majidun, the Okooba Destitute Camp, and the Rehabilitation and Skills Acquisition Centre in Tekunle Island.”

As governor, he said Tinubu provided small and medium-sized farmers in Lagos State with agricultural inputs valued at N150 million through the Lagos State Agricultural Micro-credit Scheme in an effort to increase food production.

He said Tinubu continued by establishing additional state ministries, like the Ministry of Youth and Social Development, to deal with issues affecting young people.

This, he said, resulted in the implementation of private sector involvement with various areas like refuse management, which added an extra 25,000 jobs.

In 1999, Nnamani said Tinubu launched a low-income housing programme for low- and middle-income earners with his confident commercial perspective.

This is part of measures to ensure that families living in these residences had enough discretionary income after paying low rents to sustain themselves and ameliorate poverty.

  • Senator Nnamani bares mind on sit-at-home order in South East

Senator Nnamani bares mind on sit-at-home order in South East

Senator Chimaroke Nnamani, (PDP-Enugu), Chairman, Senate Committee on Cooperation and Integration in Africa, has called for an end to the ‘sit-at-home’ order, by the proscribed IPOB in the South East.

Nnamani, who made the call in a statement he issued to newsmen, on Sunday, in Abuja, noted that the order had brought the economy and social life in the region to its knees.

The one time governor of Enugu, also condemned the attack on citizens who went about their legitimate businesses, on account of the sit -at- home order.

The lawmaker said the trinity of the Igbo character was defined by hard work, adding that the sit-at-home was antithetical to this trait and a betrayal of Igbo interest.

He then called on those behind the order to discontinue forthwith, following the continuous damage to the economy and psyche of the Igbo people.

”Most of our people live on daily income. Think of the market women who depend on daily earnings to feed their families. Think of students writing external examinations being denied access to the venues.

”How does enslaving our people, denial of means of livelihood, add value to our quest for equity and justice? If others reject us, should we also reject ourselves?

”It stands to reason that this sit-at-home cannot be a way forward .We cannot abandon ourselves.

”In our struggle for equity and justice in the Nigerian federation, we cannot inadvertently inflict more injuries on ourselves by this sit-at-home order,” he stated.

Nnamani, therefore, urged all men and women of goodwill to prevail on the protagonists of the sit-at-home order, to restore normalcy in the region.

He added that with tenacity of purpose and determination, the quest for equity and justice would be realised and not with violence.
