For a president whose country accounts for one-quarter of the world’s 194, 470 recorded death from Coronavirus, and still counting, the utterances and actions of Donald Trump against China and the World Health Organization (WHO) cannot be dismissed with a wave of the hand. This is more so when available evidence points to utter mishandling and deliberate concealment of facts and information of the outbreak of the virus by Chinese authorities. The country’s concealment of information and clampdown on those who dared to tell the truth or tell the world what was happening aided the spread of the virus which has now destroyed many lives and world economy.

On the part of WHO, the organization was too naïve to have believed the lies from Beijing to the extent of applauding the efforts of the Chinese authorities who were merely deceiving the world about the havoc being wreaked by the virus in Wuhan and other affected areas, thereby discouraging countries which would have taken earlier precaution from doing so, or assisted with medical experts that would have helped to control the situation before it got out of hand.

Trump said the World Health Organization “failed in its basic duty and it must be held accountable”. He said the world’s health watchdog promoted China’s “disinformation” about the virus which has led to a wider outbreak. Is Trump right? Let’s check out the facts.

As reported by Laurie Garret in Foreign Policy (FP) on January 15, 2020, “as the novel Coronavirus began to spread, Beijing wasted the most critical resource to fight it: trust. With the title,” How China’s Incompetence Endangered the World,” Garrett wrote to the effect that it was the leadership in China that decided the fate of the virus and how it would spread internationally to become a genuine pandemic.

The writer queried if China’s official reports, including claims that its control efforts were succeeding and the epidemic would soon peak credible? The situation on ground was contrary to the claims being made by China. Earlier, the World Health Organization (WHO) had praised the Chinese authorities for their quick, transparent response to the newly named COVID-19, while they blundered through continued cover-ups, lies, and repression that already failed to stop the virus, but rather fanned the flames of the virus spread.

The cover-ups and the repression by the government in China of its citizens that cried out cannot be forgotten. One recalls the ophthalmologist, Li Wenliang, regarded as China’s real epidemic hero, whose death from the virus revealed the ugliest side of the Chinese “terrible effort to rewrite the history of a seemingly out-of-control epidemic.”

As Garrett wrote, Li had treated patients in December in Wuhan, where the outbreak originated, who looked like SARS cases. “‘Days later, for the so-called crime of rumormongering, Li and seven other physicians were brought before China’s security police and compelled to sign a document admitting to “spreading lies.” For days, Wuhan authorities sought to stifle Li’s voice, but even after he caught the virus while treating his patients and was confined to an intensive care unit bed, he continued to sound epidemic alarms on the BBC World Service. On Feb. 6, the once-robust 34-year-old physician died. Li’s death opened the gates of political rage across China, sparking an unprecedented outpouring of grief and outrage, denouncing the government cover-up.”

It should be noted that WHO actually fell for Chinese authority’s antics and lies without trying to find out what was actually going on. It so believed Beijing that it went to sleep for two weeks during which the virus gained a lot of ground. Things were such that there were sharp criticisms and even calls and a petition for the recall of WHO’s Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, for his meetings with Xi and other Chinese leaders and his apparent reluctance to declare the outbreak a global health emergency.

“Between early December and Jan. 19, the chief Chinese Communist Party narrative from local officials in Wuhan, the epicenter of the epidemic, was that a very small number of people connected to a local live fish and animal market had become infected with a new virus, causing a few to be hospitalized with pneumonia. Whatever the cause of the sicknesses, it was not SARS or anything like SARS. All released data conveniently suited that narrative. Anybody who, like the physician Li, hinted at facts that countered the narrative was suppressed.

After the official announcement of the new disease on New Year’s Eve, a second narrative took flight, which argued that shutting down the live animal market had effectively eliminated the spread of the disease, as there was no evidence of human-to-human spread of the virus. For two weeks, the official case numbers barely budged and even decreased to 41. The message to the Chinese people was that there was nothing to worry about, local police and health officials had stopped an outbreak, job well done—a scenario accepted by WHO.

Throughout those two vital weeks—time when aggressive control efforts might have stopped the outbreak—the virus was spreading completely independently from the animal market. Throughout those two vital weeks—time when aggressive control efforts might have stopped the outbreak—the virus was spreading completely independently from the animal market, as it had been since at least mid-December. Throughout December and early January, about half of the coronavirus cases in Wuhan were entirely independent of the animal market, and the epidemic was doubling in size weekly. Researchers at Imperial College London reckoned that 1,723 people in Wuhan were infected by Jan. 12, Garrett wrote. Continuing, he said:

“As international anxiety, doubting the containment narrative, grew, and evidence of human-to-human transmission of the virus became undeniable, Xi took steps to flush out information. Around the same time, a high-level CCP committee posted a WeChat message (later deleted) that denounced functionaries and bureaucrats who might be suppressing epidemic information, warning, ‘Whoever deliberately delays or conceals reporting for the sake of their own interests will be forever nailed to history’s pillar of shame.’

Not surprisingly, the official narrative suddenly changed, as did the tally of cases and deaths, quadrupling to 198 cases on Jan. 19. In the new narrative, the animal market was no longer mentioned, and Wuhan’s leaders poked fingers of blame at one another for pushing the prior story and put huge sections of the city of 11 million on lockdown,” wrote Garrett.

This should be an eye-opener to those who think that China did well at the onset of the virus. It should also prove that Donald Trump is justified in blaming China and WHO for what the world is currently going through, especially when one remembers that while covering up and deceiving the world, China was even blaming US for its plight.

The decision by Trump to temporarily halt US funding to WHO over its handling of the Coronavirus pandemic should, therefore, be seen as an expression of anger at those who are responsible for the devastation that COVID-19 is wreaking on the world. Trump had presented the freezing of US funding to the WHO as a direct response to what he claims was the organization’s slow reaction in raising the alarm over the global threat from the coronavirus and being too “China-centric” in its response.

Though not funding WHO may not be the best at this time, outright condemnation of Trump’s action cannot pass the test of fairness and accountability. Trump remains a lone voice in a world that the forces of darkness are striving hard to take full control.

All the world leaders and even some of his fellow countrymen have condemned his action in very strong terms. But that does not detract from the truth. Trump is already immune to sharp criticisms, and being misunderstood. But he continues to do what he believes is right.

The US President has even said that his government was trying to determine whether the coronavirus emanated from a lab in Wuhan, in central China. But WHO has maintained that the virus came from animal origin.

“All available evidence suggests the virus has an animal origin and is not manipulated or constructed virus in a lab or somewhere else,” WHO spokeswoman, Fadela Chaib, said at a press briefing in Geneva. “It is probable, likely that the virus is of animal origin.” She maintained.

Of all the vituperations and criticisms that poured in following Trump’s withdrawal of the WHO funding, the only sane words were spoken by Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison. Morrison said he sympathized with Trump’s criticisms of the WHO, especially its support of reopening China’s “wet markets” where freshly slaughtered animals are sold and where the outbreak first appeared in the city of Wuhan late last year.

“But that said, the WHO also as an organization does a lot of important work including here in our region in the Pacific and we work closely with them,” Morrison said. We are not going to throw the baby out with the bathwater here, but they are also not immune from criticism and immune from doing things better.”

I quite agree with Scott Morrison. We cannot throw the baby away with the bathwater. It is already a bad situation, and the world should be united in finding a solution. The approach to Trump’s decision should be appeal for him to see reason why halting funding to the World Health Organization is not wise at this critical moment, at the peak of the fight against the pandemic, instead of demonizing him or calling him names. Withdrawal of funding for WHO and condemnation of Trump –none of them is helpful to a world already in a hopeless situation.

  • 72 Nigerians awaiting evacuation in China test positive

Seventy-two Nigerians awaiting evacuation in Guangzhou city, Guangdong Province of China have tested positive for the coronavirus disease.

The results of the tests conducted on 56 Nigerians, which were released on Tuesday, indicated that the affected individuals were asymptomatic, raising concern that they might have infected other people.

It was learnt that that 16 Nigerians had earlier tested positive for the virus, bringing the total number to 72.

The Chinese authorities explained that 65 persons who had contact with the positive cases were being traced.

The Foreign Affairs Office of Guangzhou Municipal People’s Government disclosed this in a note verbale (diplomatic correspondence) to the Nigerian Consulate in Guangzhou dated April 22, 2020.

The note, which was also copied to the Nigerian Embassy in China, as well as the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria, indicated that 16 Nigerians had earlier been confirmed positive.

The correspondence sighted by our correspondent on Wednesday read in part, “According to the data by the Guangzhou Municipal Health Commission on April 21, there are currently 16 confirmed cases and 56 positive test cases among Nigerian citizens in Guangzhou, as well as 65 cases of contact.

“We invite the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in Guangzhou to supervise Nigerian citizens in Guangzhou so they can abide by the law of the People’s Republic of China on the prevention and control of infectious diseases.”

  • U.S. State sues China over COVID-19 pandemic

U.S. State sues China over COVID-19 pandemic

The state of Missouri in America has become the first state to sue the Chinese government over the Coronavirus.

The lawsuit seeks to hold the Chinese government officially responsible for “deceit, concealment and inaction”.

The lawsuit, filed in federal court by the state’s top lawyer, alleges Chinese officials are “responsible for the enormous death, suffering, and economic losses they inflicted on the world, including Missourians”.

It added that the Chinese government lied to the world about the danger and contagious nature of COVID-19, silenced whistleblowers, and did little to stop the spread of the disease.

The lawsuit also accuses the Chinese government of making the pandemic worse by “hoarding” masks and other personal protective equipment.

U.S. President Donald Trump, initially lavished praise on China and his counterpart Xi Jinping for the official response to the outbreak, which has since spread worldwide to infect more than 2.5 million people.

But he and other senior U.S. officials have also referred to it as the “Chinese virus” and in recent days have ramped up their rhetoric.

China is already facing similar lawsuits filed in U.S. courts on behalf of U.S. business owners.

International law experts believe that efforts in U.S. courts to hold China liable for the virus would probably fail.

A professor of international law at the University of Chicago, Tom Ginsburg a legal doctrine called sovereign immunity offers foreign governments broad protection from being sued in U.S. courts.

In Beijing, foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said China’s response was not under the jurisdiction of U.S. courts, adding that it had provided updates on the outbreak to the United States since Jan. 3.

“Such abuse of litigation is not conducive to the epidemic response at home in the United States and also runs counter to international cooperation,” Geng told a daily briefing on Wednesday, speaking about Missouri’s move.

“What the United States should do is refute and reject such abuse of litigation.”

Trump initially downplayed the seriousness of the virus, which has killed more than 43,000 people in the United States, out of nearly 800,000 infections, by Tuesday.

  • Chinese lab chief says Wuhan institute not source of coronavirus

Yuan Zhiming, the head of the Institute of Virology in the Chinese city of Wuhan has rejected allegations by the U.S. that the novel coronavirus could have originated in his laboratory.

“There’s no way this virus came out from us,” Yuan said in an interview with state television, the English-language transcript of which was published by Chinese media on Sunday.

“We clearly know what kind of virus research is going on in the institute and how the institute manages viruses and samples,” he added.

More generally, he said, “there is no evidence to prove that the virus has artificial or synthetic traces.”

None of the laboratory staff had been infected with the coronavirus, the director said, adding that he understood why people had jumped to conclusions about his institute in Wuhan, the city where the pandemic originated.

“But it’s bad when some are deliberately trying to mislead people,” added Yuan.

“I know it’s impossible. This is entirely based on speculation,” said.

Asked about the theory during an interview on U.S. broadcaster CBS, Deborah Birx, a top public health official on the coronavirus, downplayed the possibility.

“I don’t have any evidence that it was a laboratory accident,” Birx said, while cautioning that the origins of the virus were still shrouded in mystery.

“We are still a long way from figuring it out. We know it originated in China. We just don’t know how and where,” she added.

The comments come a day after U.S. President Donald Trump said the U.S. was investigating whether the virus could have originated in the Wuhan lab.

“It seems to make sense,” he told reporters at a daily briefing at the White House.

Scientists have doubted whether the coronavirus could have come from a lab.

The first infections with the coronavirus were linked with an animal market in Wuhan.

Experts believe the virus comes from bats and might also have been spread via another host animal.

  • Covid-19: The powerlessness of power – Udeme Nana

    By Udeme Nana

At the last count , the mighty queen of England, Her Royal Majesty, Queen Elizabeth 11 , her 71- year- old first son, Prince Charles and the Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, the man who dragged Great Britain out of Europe got infected by coronavirus disease – 19, an unseen fatal protein cooked in China.

The United States of America, in all its wealth and glory is thoroughly shaken and damaged economically . Italians have never seen anything like this horror of mass burials in peace time and to add salt to injury, COVID – 19 struck first at the Vatican, the seat of the Pope, a mortal reputed to be the “representative of the Lord Jesus Christ on Earth”!

Did the Lord Jesus Christ stop diseases , calm the sea and raise the dead ?
Yes , but has anyone presently on Earth risen to such a challenge successfully ?
    Not to my knowledge !.

That is an indication of the powerlessness of power.

The high streets of first world countries including Germany and France have become desolate. The private jets and yatchs of top billionaires are moored and holiday hot spots are empty.

The suites in bespoke hospitality facilities lie without patrons. In one word, the world has been shut down all on account of COVID – 19, the pandemic which this columnist chose to call the white death given how it has ravaged and impacted more in geographical areas which hitherto christened and painted every bad thing and occurrence in black colour. In their twisted world view, the son of God and Saviour of the world, the Lord Jesus Christ is white skinned while Lucifer , nicknamed Satan is ugly and black. Those racists ignore the fact that both were Angels in the same realm before the fall as the Bible clearly informs.

COVID – 19 is therefore a leveller , just like the social media has levelled the height of everyone in the world.
The pandemic has also caused a rude awakening by turning drastically, the focus to sectors which wielders of temporary power unfortunately took for granted. Until now, politicians held power, they carressed and worshipped it, they made people to perceive them as life and death but in the wake of COVID – 19 , every house of parliament, every chamber , red , green or paintless has been deserted.Political mountaintops have become plainland and COVID – 19 is having a hearty laugh.

Even those who wear long ecclesiastical caps and luzurious robes have become terribly exposed as mere men and women who lack the power they claimed to possess before now.It would take another edition to make effort at reviewing some lessons but this piece is to highlight the futility of acting “powerful” in any stead because such a stance is futile. Since political power seems to have failed in the wake of this raging pandemic , it is pertinent to urge world authorities and the people to return to the old saying that “health is wealth” and deploy funds to the health sector for a total overhaul and update of infrastructure because methinks COVID – 19 is just a :toss for start”, a drop and if it rains further, it would pour as a deluge.

Health professionals, from the least in the ranks to experienced Consultants should be adequately remunerated , and relevant work tools provided for them because as soldiers at the frontline of wars of this nature, they are vulnerable. Another critical concern is the need for insurance for such important personnel in the society. They are the ones who have the “power” to fight and they have to be energised, all round, to go out there and fight passionately without looking back.
Why does a country like Nigeria care more about the powerless politicians in the society with all manner of allowances when those who have the power to fight even invisible diseases earn peanuts and are treated wretchedly.

For crying out loud, education of the citizenry is also very vital. It takes an educated lot to understand and obey simple instructions meant for ones wellbeing. On the other hand, poorly educated persons would continue to carry on , thumping their chest saying ” there is nothing there” even when they hear about the death tally , see the line up of coffins in Italy and the empty streets in better developed countries.
At a time like this, when the powerlessness of the political class and so many other sectors become real, healthcare and education show up as king. The two sectors with sustainable power in the world.
A word , they say, is enough for the wise.

  • COVID-19: IBB urges FG to learn from experiences of China, Taiwan

Former Military President, Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida, IBB, on Sunday urged Nigerians to benefit from the experiences of China, Taiwan and other countries in the fight against Coronavirus (COVID-19).

IBB made this remark while reacting to the latest figures of COVID-19 cases in Nigeria.

The total number of Coronavirus cases in Nigeria increased to 318, according to NCDC.

In a statement signed by IBB and made available to journalist in Minna, the 78-year-old also commended the efforts made by the governments at all levels to curb the spread of the disease.

He said the political commitment demonstrated by the federal and state governments in efforts to manage the spread of the scourge across the country was commendable.

“Although the numbers keep rising, the situation is still being kept at manageable levels within the limits of our health care system,” IBB said.

“We have lessons and experiences of China, Taiwan, and other countries to benefit from,” he said.

“There is no room for blame game now but concerted support by all Nigerians in the ongoing fight against the spread of the disease.

  • Maltreatment of Nigerians: We don’t discriminate against foreigners, China replies FG

The Chinese Government has replied Nigeria over accusation of maltreating Nigerians in China.

The government said it did not discriminate against nationals of any country but treats foreigners living in the country the same way as its citizens.

Series of videos emanating from social media suggested that Chinese authorities were maltreating Nigerians in their country.

A tweet by the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria on its Twitter handle @china_emb_ng on Friday, quoted the Chinese Foreign Ministry as saying that the Chinese government was averse to discrimination against foreigners.

The embassy tweeted this after the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila met with its Ambassador to Nigeria, Zhou Pingjian on the disturbing allegation of ill treatment of Nigerians in China.

The Speaker had said that the maltreatment of Nigerians living in China negated the ideals of the cordial relationship between both countries.

The embassy, quoting the Chinese Foreign Minister, Zhao Lijian said: “China and African countries are united more than ever, demonstrating brotherhood in times of adversity.

“We treat all foreign nationals equally in China.

“We reject differential treatment, and we have zero tolerance for discrimination.”

In a statement on April 9, the foreign ministry said in response to questions bordering on the same allegation, that China was even now focusing on helping African countries overcome the coronavirus.

“Since the COVID-19 outbreak, China and African countries have been supporting each other in fighting the pandemic.

“We won’t forget the support voiced and provided by African countries and their people when we were at the most crucial stage of the fight.

“Now we are closely following the situation in Africa. The Chinese government and people are doing our best to help them,” Zhao said.

“We hope foreign citizens in China will continue to fully understand and cooperate with China’s epidemic control measures to prevent risks and protect the health and safety of themselves and others.

“That is their way of contributing to the final victory over the epidemic,” he added.

FG summons Chinese Ambassador over alleged maltreatment of Nigerians in China

The Federal Government has summoned the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Zhou Pingjian over reports of maltreatment in China.

Nigerians in China who had travelled there for business purposes a few days before the federal government announced a lockdown are accusing Chinese authorities of maltreatment, just as they said the Nigerian government did not care about their plight.

A Nigerian returnee in the wake of the outbreak of Coronavirus (COVID-19) who preferred anonymity had said that some of his friends in China were going through a lot of stigmatisation from the Chinese.

However, Foreign Affairs Minister of Nigeria, Geoffrey Onyeama met with Pingjian on Thursday to discuss the issue of maltreatment of Nigerians in China.

Onyeama, on his twitter handle said expressed the concern of the Nigerian government over the allegations of maltreatment.
