China’s Wuhan, source of coronavirus, lifts final restrictions

Wuhan, the Chinese metropolis at the origin of the current coronavirus pandemic, is due this week to lift the final restrictions after more than two and a half months of stringent lockdown.

From midnight on Wednesday, (1600 GMT on Tuesday) traffic is set to return to normal.

Flights are also due to resume, cars will be able to leave the city again and people can travel by train, on condition that they are healthy and have had no recent contact with infected patients.

The resumption of normal life in the city of 11 million people is seen as an important signal for China that the worst of the crisis is over.

The novel strain of coronavirus jumped from an unknown animal species to the human population in Wuhan in December.

Of the more than 80,000 officially registered cases in China, 50,000 were in Wuhan alone.

The metropolis accounts for more than 2,500 of the country’s 3,300 listed Covid-19 deaths.

Observers believe that many cases have not been included in those numbers, however.

China reports 55 new coronavirus cases, prepares for entry ban

China has reported 55 new coronavirus infections and five deaths over the past day, as the country prepares to shut its borders to most foreigners in an effort to curb imported cases of the virus.

According to the National Health Commission, all but one of the new cases reported on Friday were found among travellers returning from abroad.

China on Thursday said it would suspend the entry of foreign nationals holding valid visas and resident permits in a move to curb the number of imported cases of the coronavirus.

The ban becomes effective on Saturday.

Also on Thursday, the government said it would severely limit both outbound and inbound international flights.

According to the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), each Chinese and foreign airline will be able to operate only one international flight per week between China and any given country.

Each flight should not exceed 75 per cent of passenger capacity.

The measure becomes effective on Sunday, the administration said.

So far, China has reported a total of 81,340 coronavirus infections including 3,292 deaths and 74,588 recoveries.

  • COVID-19 Pandemic: China should be penalised for inflicting untold pains, hardships on people – Toke Makinwa

Popular OAP, Toke Makinwa is angry at China for being responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic currently raging the world.

The show host and actress says the Asian country should be penalised for inflicting such pain and worry on the world as a whole.

In a series of tweets, she says, “Not to even lie I am low key mad at China, the whole world should fine them when all of this is over, the whole world is paying dearly for it. Stop eating certain animals #Sigh.

“Everyone is feeling the craziness, a lot of people have been laid off from work, a lot of companies downsizing and restructuring, this bites, crazy times ahead.

“If this outbreak started in Africa, the way they would have contained it, the way they’ll ban and close their borders to anything coming from Africa, it’s just unfair, people losing jobs, their lives, conspiracy or not, lab or market in Wuhan, this is insane.”

Nigeria recorded the first index case on February 27 and has recorded 51 cases with one death as of March 25.

Another infectious disease in town: Man dies of Hantavirus in China

As the coronavirus pandemic slows down in China, one person has died in the country from hantavirus, another infectious disease, local media reported on Tuesday.

According to a reports published in a Chinese daily, The Global Times said a person from southwestern Yunnan province passed away after contracting the virus.

“A person from Yunnan Province died while on his way back to Shandong Province for work on a chartered bus on Monday,” the newspaper tweeted.

It added that 32 fellow passengers on the bus had also been tested. Information on their test results was not provided.

The viral disease was first reported in the U.S. in 1993. It is transmitted to humans by rodents such as mice and rats.

No human-to-human transmission of this virus has been found except for Argentina in 1996 when it was suggested that “strains of hantaviruses in South America may be transmissible from person to person,” according to U.S.-based center for Disease Control and Prevention.

The development comes at a time when the world is battling coronavirus, also known as COVID-19.

COVID-19 has killed more than 17,000 people in 169 countries or territories to date.

Unlike coronavirus, whose symptoms include cough, fever and breathing difficulties, hantavirus in the body leads to fatigue and muscle aches, as well as headaches.

Another strange virus surfaces in China, one confirmed dead

Amidst outrage of the Coronavirus spread, China has reported another outbreak of a deadly disease, Hantavirus.

In a report by China’s English tabloid, Global Times, on Monday, revealed that a person from Yunnan Province died while on his way back to Shandong Province for work on a chartered bus.

He was tested positive for #hantavirus on Monday and other 32 people on bus were tested.

In a research, An orthohantavirus or Hantaviruses are a family of viruses spread mainly by rodents and can cause varied disease syndromes in people worldwide.

Infection with any hantavirus can produce hantavirus disease in people.

Hantaviruses in the Americas are known as “New World” hantaviruses and may cause hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS).

Other hantaviruses, known as “Old World” hantaviruses, are found mostly in Europe and Asia and may cause hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS).

Each hantavirus serotype has a specific rodent host species and is spread to people via inhalation of aerosolized virus that is shed in urine, feces, and saliva, and less frequently by a bite from an infected host.

Coronavirus: China to lift travel borders on Hubei province

China announced Tuesday that a lockdown would be lifted on more than 50 million people in central Hubei province where the coronavirus first emerged late last year.

But fears rose over the second wave of infections fuelled by people arriving from overseas.

After two months living with draconian curbs on daily life, residents will be allowed to leave Hubei from midnight Tuesday if healthy, while Wuhan city — the initial epicentre of the outbreak — will end restrictions from April 8.

The province ordered the shutdown in January but has been gradually easing the rules and permitting people to move about within Hubei and return to work.

People who wish to travel in or out of Hubei or Wuhan will be able to as long as they have a “green” health code issued by authorities.

But schools in the province will remain closed.

New cases have slowed dramatically over the last month, although the first locally transmitted infection in nearly a week was reported in Wuhan Tuesday, along with three cases elsewhere in the country.

But the statistics pale in comparison to imported cases, which reached 74 nationwide on Tuesday — a trend that has fuelled anxiety about a possible second wave of infections just as authorities appeared to be bringing the country’s outbreak under control.

FG denies buying ‘second hand’ protective gear from China

The Federal Government has described as fake, the news alert on audio recording being circulated on social media that Nigeria was seeking to buy used protective gear from China.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, who stated this at a news conference in Abuja, also refuted the claim on the same platform that Nigeria was waiting for money from the World Health Organisation (WHO), before taking drastic measures.

Mohammed said it was also incorrect, claims that the country had no funds to tackle the disease because its foreign reserves had been exhausted, funds had been stolen, and that the figure of those infected by Corona virus was understated.

“This is a most irresponsible, inaccurate and definitely orchestrated job by a charlatan and should be disregarded by all Nigerians.

“It is obvious that this hatchet job is aimed at distracting the hard working health officials and misinforming Nigerians in order to create panic.

The Federal Government will not be distracted in its efforts to fight this disease and keep Nigerians safe.

“Therefore, we urge all Nigerians to disregard the senseless audio,” he said.

Mohammed said that it was also fake and handiwork of scammers, the news being circulated on social media that government planned to pay N8,500 to each citizen to stay at home for one month starting from March 30.

He urged those seeking genuine and up-to-date information on Corona virus to log on to the website of the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

The minister also debunked the myth by COVID-19 pundits prescribing Choloroquine (which has not been approved for treating Corona virus), garlic, onion, hot bath, etc, all as cure for the disease.

He also described as farce, the claim that the disease could not affect Africans for one reason or another, or that the young were immune to it.

He said from what was known so far, no one was immune to the disease, and that the WHO had warned that not even young people were safe from infection by the virus.

“Perhaps one thing that is as dangerous, if not more dangerous than the virus, is fake news/disinformation.

“Our efforts to tackle Corona virus are not being helped by the spread of fake news.

“We implore Nigerians to shun these charlatans and follow directives from relevant authorities,” he said.

Mohammed disclosed that Facebook was cooperating with the government and had asked Nigerians to report any false or misleading report on Facebook and Instagram pages, so they could immediately bring them down.

“I can report that Facebook has been bringing down flagged posts in this regard.

“Facebook is also taking preemptive action to remove any false or harmful messages about this pandemic and public health in Nigeria 24/7.

“Similarly, WhatsApp is working with the NCDC to strengthen capacity, and keep the public informed on Corona virus,” the minister said.

Good news! Drug, Favipiravir shows clinical efficacy against Coronavirus in China

A Chinese official says Favipiravir, an antiviral drug, has shown good clinical efficacy against coronavirus (COVID-19).

The virus was first detected in Wuhan, a city in the Asian country, in December.

Speaking during a press briefing on Tuesday, Zhang Xinmin, director of the China National Center for Biotechnology Development, said the clinical trial of the drug has been concluded.

He said Favipiravir, an influenza drug which was approved for clinical use in Japan in 2014, did not show obvious adverse reactions during the clinical trial.

According to the official, more than 80 patients participated in the trial in the Third People’s Hospital of Shenzhen, south China’s Guangdong province.

Xinmin said 35 patients were taking Favipiravir and the 45 were on a control group.

At the end of the trial, he said the results showed that the patients who took the Favipiravir drug tested negative for the virus within a short time. On the other hand, the patients in the control group have shown no improvement.

Another clinical research at the Zhongnan Hospital in Wuhan University showed that the “therapeutic effect of the drug is stronger than the control group”.

Xinmin said the drug has been recommended in the diagnosis and treatment of the deadly virus.

He added that a pharmaceutical firm in the country has been granted the approval to mass-produce and supply favipiravir.
