WAR: China threatens America, says pelosi’s visit to Taiwan ‘extremely dangerous’

The government of China has condemned in strong terms the visit of the American House of Representatives Speaker, Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan, saying that there will be consequences.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in China has released a statement describing Taiwan as China’s region and warning America to stay off.

China called it a serious violation of the one-China principle and the provisions of the three China-U.S. joint communiqués.

“It has a severe impact on the political foundation of China-U.S. relations, and seriously infringes upon China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

China said the visit undermines peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and sends a wrong signal to the separatist forces for “Taiwan independence”.

The statement referred to the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758 of 1971, reminding the U.S. that in 1979, the U.S. made a clear commitment in the China-U.S. Joint Communiqué on the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations.

China recalled it was all along opposed to the visit to Taiwan by U.S. congressional members, and that the executive branch “has the responsibility to stop such visit”.

“Since Speaker Pelosi is the incumbent leader of the U.S. Congress, her visit to and activities in Taiwan, in whatever form and for whatever reason, is a major political provocation to upgrade U.S. official exchanges with Taiwan.

“No country, no forces, and no individual should ever misestimate the firm resolve, strong will, and great capability of the Chinese Government and people to defend state sovereignty and territorial integrity and to achieve national reunification and rejuvenation.”

China vowed to take all necessary measures to safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity “in response to the U.S. Speaker’s visit”.

The Chinese government said the consequences of the trip must be borne by the U.S. side and the “Taiwan independence” separatist forces.

The statement warned America to stop meddling in Taiwan, China’s internal affairs, and stop conniving with “Taiwan independence” separatist forces.

Earlier in the year, Taiwan’s Foreign Minister Joseph Wu said a war triggered by China will end in a global disaster.

Meanwhile, Ms. Pelosi, the most senior US politician in 25 years to visit Taiwan, said her delegation had come to make it “unequivocally clear” that the US would not “abandon” the island.

Taiwan is self-ruled, but China sees it as a breakaway province that will eventually unite with it.

“Forty-three years ago, America made a promise to always stand with Taiwan… today our delegation came to Taiwan to make it unequivocally clear we will not abandon our commitment to Taiwan,” Ms. Pelosi said, referring to the Taiwan Relations Act.

Within an hour of Ms. Pelosi’s arrival, China announced that the People’s Liberation Army will conduct a series of live-fire military drills in the air and at sea around Taiwan later this week – warning ships and aircraft not to enter the affected areas.

This follows days of escalating tensions in which Chinese warplanes had already ventured out as far as the median line, the unofficial divide separating China and Taiwan in the waters between them.

A China Eastern Airlines plane with 132 people on board crashed near the city of Wuzhou in the southern Chinese region of Guangxi on Monday, the country’s aviation authority confirmed.

Teng is a remote region about 300km from Guangzhou. There were reports of a forest fire after the crash.

“I’ve never heard of that,” Pengyu said.

Pengyu expressed concern for “the Ukraine situation” describing it as “indeed disconcerting”.

Russia/Ukraine war: China blocks EPL coverage, gives reason

China blocks coverage in its territory of this weekend’s English Premier League (EPL) fixtures as Britain’s biggest clubs continue to demonstrate support for Ukraine.

The Premier League has expressed its intention to show solidarity with Ukraine in various ways across the 10-match programme.

It started with Leicester City’s home clash against Leeds United in Saturday’s early kick-off.

Chinese rights holder iQIYI Sports had first reacted by refusing to show the matches.

And although the Premier League has declined to comment, there are indications the blackout is due to go ahead.

The move has been interpreted as a sign of China’s strong relationship with Russia.

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters said the league’s Russian television deal with Rambler was “under review”.

Mr Cui Jianchun, Ambassador of China to Nigeria has revealed plans by his country to take the Nigerian football team to his country.

Cui made this known on Saturday while briefing Journalists on the sidelines of the 4th edition of the Nigeria-China Ping-Pong tournament, organised for Journalists by the China Cultural Centre in Abuja.

He stressed this was part of efforts by his country and Nigeria to harness sporting activities to deepen diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Cui said, “Nigeria leads in football in Africa and we have a great distance to catch up with Nigeria football, and we are thinking of bringing Nigeria football team to China, we can do things together.

“I am working on this agenda, because there is need for the two countries, to try to use sports as a way to deepen relations between them.

“I also have lots of plans for next year after COVID-19; I believe that lots of Journalists will like to go to China, because seeing is believing.

“China has now really achieved a lot. We have lots of challenges, but I believe that if you go to China you will see China and I think that is beneficial to Nigerians.

“We can use table tennis to build friendship between the two nations. It is very important and I think it special for young people to make friends, share ideas and exchange thoughts.”

He disclosed that the Chinese embassy plans to create opportunities for Journalists to go to China and encourage Chinese people to come to Nigeria for nationals of both countries learn from each other.

More so, Cui said, although the tournament could not hold in 2020 due to COVID-19 pandemic, China is putting-up measures to support Nigeria, to ensure that normalcy is restored, saying “Chinese central government has decided to donate Chinese vaccine to Nigeria.

“Firstly, batch of 500,000 dosages will be delivered to Nigeria before the end of this year and millions of dosages could be provided by the Chinese government, so we await your government’s response.

“We have 40 countries that use Chinese vaccines, donated by China, so on the Nigerian side, I have not received any response from your government.

“I hope by the end of this year we can provide a million dosages to Nigeria and this is very important,” he added.

Also speaking, Mr Emmanuel Ogbeche, Chairman of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Chapter, thanked the Embassy of China and promised to work closely with the mission to sustain the feat.

According to Ogbeche, the support derived from the mission and its Cultural Centre has gone a long way to promote the well being of members of the Union and to physically keep fit.

In a separate interview, the overall winner of the tournament in the men’s singles category, Tiennabeso Bibiye, a staff of AIT, expressed appreciation to the management of Daar Communications for its support.

According to him, the management provided the enabling environment for its staff to prepare adequately for the tournament.

“I came into this competition with some level of confidence, because I am a regular table tennis player, that is what I do, it is a passion for me, it is something I do to keep fit.

“But, I never knew I was going to meet stiff opponent in today’s game.

Equally, the overall Winner of Women’s singles category, Hannah Onoja, also a staff of AIT, attributed her success to adequate preparations.

“I really trained hard for this game, knowing fully well of what is ahead for me, I trained under the sun and rain just for this particular tournament.

“So, I am not surprised at my performance, I have been playing since the past three weeks,” Onoja said.

  • China declares cryptocurrency transactions illegal

    China declares cryptocurrency transactions illegal

China’s central bank on Friday said all financial transactions involving cryptocurrencies are illegal, sounding the death knell for digital currencies in China after a crackdown on the volatile trade.

The global values of cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin have massively fluctuated over the past year partly due to Chinese regulations, which have sought to prevent speculation and money laundering.

“Virtual currency-related business activities are illegal financial activities,” the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) said in an online statement Friday, adding that offenders would be “investigated for criminal liability in accordance with the law.”

The notice bans all related financial activities involving cryptocurrencies, such as trading crypto, selling tokens, transactions involving virtual currency derivatives and “illegal fundraising”.

The central bank said that in recent years the “trading and speculation of Bitcoin and other virtual currencies have become widespread, disrupting economic and financial order, giving rise to money laundering, illegal fund-raising, fraud, pyramid schemes and other illegal and criminal activities.”

In June, Chinese officials said more than 1,000 people had been arrested for using the profits from crime to buy cryptocurrencies.

Several Chinese provinces had already banned the operation of cryptocurrency mines since the start of this year, with one region accounting for eight percent of the computing power needed to run the global blockchain — a set of online ledgers to record bitcoin transactions.

Bitcoin values tumbled in May on the back of a warning by Beijing to investors against speculative trading in cryptocurrencies.

  • 2020 Paralympics closes with spectacular ceremony as China top medals table

2020 Paralympics closes with spectacular ceremony as China top medals table

The Tokyo Paralympics ended on Sunday with a spectacular closing ceremony as China finished the Games top of the medals table by a huge distance.

The Paralympics has been held without fans and under strict coronavirus protocols, just like the Olympics in the Japanese capital in July and August.

China racked up 96 gold and 207 medals in total, followed by Great Britain with 41 gold and 124 medals in total.

The U.S were third with 37 gold and 104 medals in total, ahead of the Russian Paralympic Committee (RPC) with 36 and 118.

Russia was not allowed to compete as a nation due to doping-related sanctions, and the Russian para-athletes who had no doping offences were allowed to compete under the RPC flag.

China, which next hosts the Winter Olympics and Paralympics in February and March next year in Beijing, lost out to the U.S in the medals table at the Tokyo Olympics.

The Paralympics closing ceremony at the National Stadium in Tokyo had fireworks, video montages, light shows and modern music.

Japanese Crown Prince Akishino was in attendance.

The athletes’ parade included the two Afghan Paralympians who managed to reach Tokyo late after fleeing the Taliban takeover of their country.

Otherwise, only select members of teams were allowed at the ceremony due to COVID-19 rules.

International Paralympic Committee (IPC) president Andrew Parsons later handed over the Paralympic flag to the Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo ahead of the 2024 Summer Games in the French capital.

A crowd in Paris then partied beneath the Eiffel Tower while Parsons and Games chief Seiko Hashimoto delivered final addresses in Tokyo.

“It’s been wonderful to see each venue full of smiles,” Hashimoto said, adding that the difficulties holding the event during the pandemic made it extra special.

“I’m very proud of this wonderful (organising) team. Thank you very much.

“I’m so glad we hosted the Olympic and Paralympic Games. I believe in the value they bring.”

Parsons declared the Games over, adding: “What a journey, what sport, what a Games. Together against the odds we did it.

“To the people of Japan, you made this possible,” he said before the Paralympic flame was extinguished.

Below is the Games’ final medals table:

China condemns ‘hurried’ U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told Secretary of State Antony Blinken on that the hasty pullout of U.S. troops from Afghanistan had a “serious negative impact,”but pledged to work with Washington to promote stability in the country.

Similarly, Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying on Tuesday said Washington had left “an awful mess of unrest, division and broken families” in Afghanistan.

Beijing has long feared the neighbour could become a staging point for minority Uyghur separatists in the sensitive border region of Xinjiang.

But a top-level Taliban delegation met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Tianjin last month, promising that Afghanistan would not be used as a base for militants.

In exchange, China offered economic support and investment for Afghanistan’s reconstruction.

Hua on Monday said China was ready to continue “friendly and cooperative” relations with Taliban-controlled Afghanistan.

She urged the new Afghan regime on Tuesday to “make a clean break with international forces” and “prevent Afghanistan from becoming a gathering place for terrorists and extremists again”.

Biden promised a complete withdrawal of US troops by September 11, marking an end to two decades of war.

But Washington was left shocked by the rapid collapse of the Afghan government and the Taliban’s sweeping advance.
