    $498,000: Court reserves judgement on bail application of Rivers Rep, still remanded

    The Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt on Tuesday reserved judgement on the bail application of the detained member of the House of Representatives, Chinyere Igwe, who is standing trial for money laundering.

    The lawmaker, who represents the Port Harcourt Federal Constituency 2, was arrested by the police, a day to the Presidential election with $498,000, said to be part of the Rivers financial war chest of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

    Igwe was said to be in possession of the money without reporting to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

    At the resumption of the matter, the Principal prosecuting lawyer, Chidi Ekeh, from the Attorney-General’s office applied to take over the prosecution from the police.

    His application was not opposed by the defendant’s lawyer, Reuben Wanoghor, who insisted on moving a motion for the bail application.

    The Presiding Judge, Justice Stephen Day-Lop Pam, reserved judgement on the bail application and adjourned the matter for May 4th, 2023.

    He ordered that the lawmaker be remanded in police custody.

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that the Rivers State Police Command has arrested the federal lawmaker (Chinyere Igwe) with $498,100 on suspicion of attempted vote buying and money laundering.

    Igwe, who represents Port Harcourt Federal Constituency 2 in the House of Representatives, was arrested along Aba Road in the state capital.

    It was gathered that the suspect was picked up by men of the Command on stop and search duty. Also found in his possession was a list for the distribution of the money.

    Police Public Relations Officer of Rivers State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the arrest in a statement.

    Chinyere Igwe, a member of the House of Representatives for Port Harcourt City Local Government Constituency II, has been arraigned before a Federal High Court in Rivers state over money laundering allegations.

    The lawmaker was alleged to have been in posession of $498, 100 on February 24, 2023, during a police stop-and-search operation.

    When the charge was read, the accused pleaded not guilty.

    His counsel, however, made an application for bail which was objected to by the police counsel.

    Trial judge, Justice Stephen Daylop-Pam after listening to the argument, adjourned till March 14, 2023, for bail consideration.

    He, thereafter, directed that the accused should be sent to Nigerian Police Clinic for medical attention.

    The accused was arrested a day to election in Rivers state.

    A member of the House of Representatives, Chinyere Igwe, was arrested in Port Harcourt with $498,100 in his car, in the early hours of Friday morning.

    Police said the money was found during a stop-and-search operation along with a list of people Igwe planned to give it to.

    The 57-year-old is an ally of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar.

    A statement by Rivers police spokesperson Grace Iringe-Koko said the lawmaker is being investigated for money laundering and attempt to buy voters ahead of the presidential and national assembly elections on Saturday.

    “He was arrested by 2:45 a.m. on Friday by police officers deployed to Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Headquarters at Aba Road in Port Harcourt.

    “The police officers, who were on stop-and-search found a cash sum of 498,100 USD inside a bag in his car meant for the elections. Also recovered from him was a list meant for the distribution of the money,” Iringe-Koko said.

    She added that the assistant inspector-general of police in charge of elections in the state, Abuto Yero, has ordered the lawmaker’s interrogation and arraignment in court.

    A video of Igwe being interrogated by security agents was circulated by the Rivers State Government on Friday morning.

    In the video, Igwe said he was driving home about midnight when he was stopped by security agents along Aba Road.

    He said part of the money was meant to support the PDP while the rest was his personal money.

    Igwe’s arrest occurred two days after a radio and television station belonging to him was attacked by gunmen in Rivers State.

    A few months ago, a fuel station belonging to the lawmaker was sealed by the Rivers State Government over alleged involvement in illegal bunkering.

    Igwe said he was being victimised by Governor Nyesom Wike for supporting Atiku.
