    Gunmen shoot 3 policemen to death at Ebonyi checkpoint

    Gunmen shot three policemen to death in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital on Saturday.

    Police spokesman in Ebonyi, SP Chris Anyanwu, disclosed this on Sunday in Abakaliki.

    Anyanwu disclosed that the police operatives were killed at a border community between Ebonyi and Enugu State.

    “The hoodlums operated in two Sienna vehicles, drove into the police check-point and opened fire on the policemen.

    “Three police personnel of `Operation Safer Highway’, were fatally injured and were later confirmed dead by medical personnel,’’ Anyanwu stated.

    Gunmen shot and killed two members of “Ebubeagu’’ Security Outfit in Ebonyi on Friday.

    Ebubeagu is the regional security organisation put together by governors of the Southeast geopolitical zone to contain insecurity.

    Police spokesman in Ebonyi, SP Chris Anyanwu, confirmed the killing on Saturday at Abakaliki.

    “Investigation is on-going into the matter and no arrest has been made,’’ he stated.

    Mr Monday Opara, a resident, told newsmen that the incident happened around 7 p.m. on Friday at Ebebe Junction in Ebonyi Local Government Area.

    “There were other victims, but before they could get to the hospital, two of them died while others with bullet injuries are still receiving treatment,’’ Opara said.

    Gunmen set council headquarters ablaze in Ebonyi

    The Ebonyi Police Command has confirmed the attack on a section of Ezza North Local Government Headquarters by unidentified gunmen.

    The hoodlums set the property on fire on Monday morning and left valuables worth millions of naira destroyed.

    The command’s Spokesman, SP Chris Anyanwu, in Abakaliki on Monday said that the command was aware of the incident.

    Anyanwu said: “We are aware of the attack but yet to get the full details. Right now, investigation is ongoing to get the details but no arrest has been made.”

    Narrating the incident to newsmen in his office, the Chairman of the council, Mr Ogodo Nomeh, said the attack occured in the early hours of Monday.

    Nomeh said: “The hoodlums engaged the security operatives in the council in a gunbattle.

    “Some of the hoodlums sustained gunshot injuries. So far, no arrest has been made because the incident happened in the night.

    “There were so much gunshots and many of the gunmen were injured. Right now, we are moving from one hospital to another to check for people that have gunshot injuries.

    “We are not suspecting anybody now until we apprehend the suspects. You know the thing happened around 2am.

    “We are talking with security operatives that had encounter with the hoodlums,” he further said.

    20-year-old mother, lover arrested for selling baby for N500,000

    The Police in Ebonyi have arrested a 20-year-old mother of a baby boy and her lover who sold their baby to a maternity home operator for N500,000.

    The mother, Ola China, 20, of Amangwu Edda in Afikpo North Local Government Area of Ebonyi was impregnated out of wedlock by Jonah Ogbuagu, a bricklayer in August 2021.

    Ola gave birth to the baby in April 2022 at Obigbo, Rivers, where she went to hibernate at her aunt’s residence during the pregnancy.

    After giving birth, she conspired with Ogbuagu and sold the baby.

    Police spokesman in Ebonyi, SP Chris Anyanwu, stated on Tuesday in Abakaliki that the maternity home owner, popularly known as “Mummy Abigail’’ was arrested at Ovima, also in Afikpo North Local Government Area.

    “Mummy Abigail runs a maternity home which she uses as a cover for her illicit trade.

    “The suspects have been handed over to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons for necessary actions and prosecution,’’ SP Anyanwu stated.

    He added that police in Ebonyi also arrested a two-man syndicate of child traffickers, who specialise in stealing, abducting, kidnapping and selling of children.

    Anyawu gave their details as Otuu Chizaram, 24, from Ndukwe Akpoha and Agbi Precious, 20, of Evuma Road both in Afikpo North Local Government Area of Ebonyi.

    “Each of them confessed to the crime of stealing a baby,’’ Anyanwu added.

    Gunmen attack Ebonyi communities, kill 3 persons

    Suspected gunmen on Monday attacked Ngbo community in Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi, killing three persons and destroying properties believed to be worth millions of naira.

    The spokesman of the State Police Command, SP Chris Anyanwu made this known in Abakaliki on Tuesday, confirming that the command was aware of the incident.

    According to Anyanwu, the incident occurred at Ojiogu and Okpochiri Ukwagba Ngbo communities on Monday and `few persons` have been reported dead.

    “Yes, we have some details. It happened yesterday, Monday. Two houses and one shop were burnt. Two motorcycles and one tricycle were also burnt by the hoodlums.

    “The DPO in the area said there are few dead bodies seen on the ground. The police are working round the clock to ensure the restoration of peace in the area,” the Police spokesman said.

    Mr Clement Odah, Executive Chairman, Ohaukwu Local Government Area condemned the incident.

    He assured that efforts would be intensified to unravel the circumstances that led to ‘such unwarranted attack and loss of lives and properties.’
