  • IPOB: Self-proclaimed Jews using Christianity to wage war against Nigeria – Presidency

The Presidency has said the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) is using two interconnected campaigns concurrently, using false allegations of persecution of Christians to wage a war against Nigeria.

Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity made this known in a statement on Sunday.

According to Garba Shehu, the campaign consists of producing articles in the names of an alleged Christian NGOs’ leaders and letters to and from members of Congress to the White House.

He said it was unfortunate that some Members of Congress have clearly been persuaded by the campaigns.

The statement reads: “The Presidency wishes to draw the attention of all citizens and the international community to a most misleading campaign spearheaded by the so-called Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) using false allegations of persecution of Christians against the Nigerian State.

“A very deep and wide investigation by an agency of the Nigerian government, working with international partners have made us become aware that there are two, interconnected campaigns being run concurrently by the IPOB in this regard.

“Both are using the cover of Christianity – and calling for a US Special Envoy to be appointed to stop the “genocide” of Christians in Nigeria. But the real purpose is to drive a wedge between the Nigeria government and its US and UK/European allies.

“IPOB leadership of course self-proclaims as “Jewish,” a position not shared by the generality of the members.

“For reasons of convenience, he claims to have an interest in the welfare of Christians – but this is a ruse: the case for independence, the leader believes, is strengthened by “proving” the government of Nigeria is “autocratic”, engaged in a “silent slaughter” of their own citizens along religion and ethnic lines – and that therefore the only viable option for the unique religious and ethnic minority is a sovereign Biafra separate from Nigeria.

“Nigerians and the international community are advised to be wary of this divisive campaign, which available evidence shows is being funded with a monthly spending of $85,000 USD since October 2019, with no records of the source of this largesse.

“The campaign consists of producing articles in the names of the alleged Christian NGOs’ leaders (of campaign groups created at the time this PR contract with a US lobbying firm was signed) and letters to and from members of Congress to the White House.

“Unfortunately, some Members of Congress have clearly been persuaded there is indeed a “Christian persecution” underway in Nigeria – and do so quoting the campaign – and they are known to be taking up the case directly with the White House to appoint the special envoy.

“The American charity secured a meeting with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and has made presentations to the US Commission on International Religious Freedom.

“There is also a UK and European angle of the Campaign, which is more opaque than its US sister campaign – given there is less legal requirement for public filings – but what is known of this at the moment is that their Budget is sufficient to hire four PR firms in the UK, Belgium, France and the US (the latter additional to the above).

“They have founded an “NGO/Charity” and a linked web-based campaign named “Stop the Silent Slaughter” which is well designed and complete with video “evidence”-completely concocted.

“Members of the alleged Christian NGO have had multiple Op-Ed articles in conservative news websites promulgating their message of a “Christian Genocide”. Some of those articles have also been used as “evidence” in the sister US campaign.

“Two of those conservative news websites were co-founded by the owner of the UK PR firm they have hired to generate their publicity as well as an OP-Ed article in the name of a British MP who may have been convinced by their campaign under false pretences.

“They have secured additional coverage in France, EU and Germany.

“They secured a MPs debate on the “Christian Genocide” in the House of Commons in which staff member of the UK PR was referenced as the “private secretary” to the leader of the UK-based Charity.

“It is clear from all of the above that the IPOB’s extraordinarily and dubiously well-funded campaign in the US and UK/Europe is misusing the issue of the welfare of Christians purely to further their own political ends, and it seeks to damage inter-religious dialogue in Nigeria as well as to damage the international reputation of Nigeria.

“Nigerians and the international community are hereby advised to ignore this campaign as they have disregarded similar past campaigns originated by this group which has been designated as a terrorist organisation by the Nigerian State.

“International groups and societies are welcome to send representatives to Nigeria and give a lie to the false claims made by these terrorist groups who are duping them of their money and involving them in conduct and activities disguised to destroy the harmonious relationships existing between their home countries and Nigeria”.

  • CRA condemns Kogi Chief of Staff’s disparaging remarks about Christianity

CRA condemns Kogi Chief of Staff’s disparaging remarks about Christianity

The Christian Rights Agenda (CRA) has condemned, in strongest terms, an insult on the Christian faith by Mr. Abdulkareem Jamiu Asuku, the Chief of Staff to Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello.
The CoS, who, on Radio Kogi 93.5 FM on Monday, while discussing a lingering quarrel among Muslims in Ebiraland over which sect produces the Chief Imam of a mosque in Okene, veered off the context of the discussion by alluding to denominations in Christianity. He compared the dichotomy among the Islamic sects to Christian denominations, and disparaging Christians for not being true followers of Jesus Christ.
In a statement signed by its Acting Director of Publicity, Tom Chiahemen, CRA argued that Pharm Asuku’s comments were not only an insult on Christianity, but they also epitomized the hatred and bigotry against Christians in the government of Governor Yahaya Bello.
The CRA is a Christian organization set up to advocate the respect for the rights of Christians in line with the principles of freedom of religion, thoughts and beliefs, enshrined in the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The statement said, “Kogi governor’s Chief of Staff’s comments steams of discrimination, bigotry, hatred and the kind of bias that should not be in the heart of a government official. The Bible says, “out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh” (Matthew 12:34). Apparently, this Chief of Staff spoke from the prevalent disposition of the government at Lugard House in Lokoja, and that is unfortunate. A government and those who run it should be all-embracing. Governor Yahaya Bello is not a governor of Muslims, except he wants to be seen to be so. But if his CoS is showing open disdain for the Christian faith, it means the administration is doomed.”

The CRA added that “Christian denominations in Nigeria have not carried out cold-blooded murders; massacre of innocent persons in villages and cities; destruction of properties; raping of women, men and children; hatred, and outright genocide that is the stock-in-trade of some religious groups in Nigeria. An evidence of this is the fact that Ebiraland is the hotbed of senseless sectarian and ethnic killings in Kogi State in spite of the fact that the majority of the people in that part of the state belongs to one religion. Christianity does not advocate mass murder, hatred, and all the evils that manifest in Ebiraland.”
The Christian organization added that “Christian denominations have, instead, fostered freedom, peace, trust, respect for each other, and even led to development. In Nigeria, the Redeemed Christian Church of God is not at war with Deeper Life Christian Ministry; neither is the Baptist Church at war with Methodist Church. Churches are not daggers-drawn at each other, unlike what happens in Okene over the position of Imam of the mosque.”
The group called on Kogi State governor to change his bias towards Christians in Kogi State, and counsel his staff against disparaging the Christian faith in the name of settling a dispute among Islamic sects.

The CRA added that contrary to Asuku’s disparaging insinuation, the various Christian denominations in Nigeria, as “true followers of Jusus hrist,” do not, and have always condemned, cold-blooded murders; massacre of innocent persons in villages and cities; destruction of properties; raping of women, men and children; hatred, and outright genocide being reported in some parts of Nigeria.

An evidence of this is the view of many Nigerians that Ebiraland is the hotbed of senseless sectarian and ethnic killings in Kogi State in spite of the fact that the majority of the people in that part of the state belongs to one religion.

The CRA is of the candid opinion that instead of dissipating his energy disparaging Christianity, Governor Bello’s Chief of Staff, who ought to have been worried about this public perception of Ebiraland, should have been finding ways of how to change the narrative.

Popular gospel artiste dumps Christianity, says ‘I no longer believe in God’

Jonathan Steingard, the frontman of the Christian rock band Hawk Nelson, has admitted he no longer believes in God.

“After growing up in a Christian home, being a pastor’s kid, playing and singing in a Christian band, and having the word ‘Christian’ in front of most of the things in my life — I am now finding that I no longer believe in God,” read Steingard’s statement. “The last few words of that sentence were hard to write. I still find myself wanting to soften that statement by wording it differently or less specifically – but it wouldn’t be as true.”

The 36-year-old Canadian musician went on to write that losing his religion occurred over several years as he began sharing his doubts to close friends. Steingard said he felt like this was the right time to make the announcement given that his band is on hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Hawk Nelson issued a statement on Wednesday supporting Steingard following his announcement that he would be leaving the Christian rock band.

“One of our best friends, one with whom we have walked, worked and lived alongside for 20 + years revealed some of his innermost feelings on his faith journey this past week,” read the band’s statement posted on Instagram. “Our mission as Hawk Nelson has always been to inspire and encourage all people with the truth that God is FOR them and not against them. In that message’s most simple and purest form, that THEY matter.”

Steingard originally joined Hawk Nelson in 2004 as its lead guitarist, and became the lead vocalist after founder Jason Dunn’s exit from the band in 2012.

  • Nigerian Christians not as committed as Ethiopian Christians

The world’s most committed Christians live in Africa, and Ethiopia ranks highest for Africa in a new study report released by the Pew Research Center (PRC).

TheNewsGuru (TNG) reports Ethiopia, with 98% committed Christians, toppled Nigeria that has 82% committed Christians and Ghana with 89% committed Christians in the world’s most committed Christians report.

“Christianity is the world’s largest religion, with a big presence in most parts of the globe. But not all Christians share the same levels of religious commitment,” PRC noted.

According to the recent PRC study, “Christians in Africa and Latin America tend to pray more frequently, attend religious services more regularly and consider religion more important in their lives than Christians elsewhere in the world”.

The study analyzed 84 countries with sizable Christian populations. In 35 of those countries, at least two-thirds of all Christians say religion is very important in their lives. All but three of these 35 countries are in sub-Saharan Africa or Latin America.

The four standard measures of religious commitment used for the study are affiliation, importance of religion, worship attendance and frequency of prayer.

Findings reveals that Honduras is having 94% committed Christians, Philippines 91% committed Christians, Ghana 89% committed Christians, Colombia 80% committed Christians, Ecuador 80% committed Christians, South Africa 79% committed Christians, Brazil 77% committed Christians and Peru with 74% committed Christians.

Among Christians, religion most important in sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, and the United States

Findings also revealed that “at least four out of five Christians in Nigeria, Liberia, Senegal, Cameroon and Chad pray every day” and that more than 60% of Christians in every African country surveyed, said they attend church at least weekly.

The study indicates that Christianity in sub-Saharan Africa is growing the fastest than any other part of the world.

“These findings reflect the broader pattern of Christianity’s “march southward” from wealthy countries to developing ones.

“This phenomenon is particularly evident in sub-Saharan Africa, where Christianity is rapidly growing,” the report stated.

The study attributed the rapid growth of Christianity in sub-Saharan Africa to high fertility rates.

  • Christians rise up in prayer for abducted Dapchi girl who refuses to renounce Christianity

The Christian world in Nigeria has risen up in prayer for Liya Shuaibu, one of the 110 girls of Federal Government Science and Technical College, Dapchi, who was kidnapped by the terrorist group, Boko Haram, but was not released along with the 104 girls who were released by the group, yesterday, allegedly because she refused to renounce Christianity and convert to Islam.

According to the girl’s father, Nata Sharibu, who spoke on Raypower FM radio, he was informed that his daughter was not released along with the 104 girls whose release set Dapchi and indeed the entire country agog in joy, yesterday, because she refused to renounce her faith and convert to Islam.

Sharibu, said even though he is sad his daughter, though still alive, was not among those released, he was still very happy that she did not denounce Christ even at the risk of her life. “They gave her the option of converting in order to be released but she said she will never become a Muslim”, she was quoted as saying. “I am very sad but I am also jubilating too because my daughter did not denounce,” Sharibu said enthusiastically.

His call for Christians to rise up in prayer for his daughter’s safe return has been taken up by several Christian groups who have been sending WhatsApp, text messages and emails to Christian groups and individuals to rise up in prayers for Liya Shuaibu.

The chain messages which have been circulating since last night urge Christians to rise up in fervent prayers for the exemplary Christian girl who refuses to renounce Christ and Christianity.

“Pray for Liya Sharibu, the Dapchi girl who Boko Haram has refused to release because she refuses to renounce Christ and convert to Islam”, one of the messages said, while asking them to “Pray for her safe return. Pray for her to remain strong in her faith. Pray that God will stamp out the terrorist group”, some others urged.

Others said “People of God, please let us raise prayer for Liya Sharibu that the hand of the Lord will be upon her, that the Lord should deliver her from the den of lions den and bring her safely without being molested. Please let us arise and pray for this girl. If you are a true Christian, send this message to other Christians and dedicate at least three minutes to pray for this girl till she is released.”

Of the 110 students who were kidnaped on February 19, 104 of them were released and brought to Dapchi by the terrorists yesterday, while five of them were said to have died in circumstances yet to be known.

Only Liya Sharibu, remains unaccounted for though some of the released girls told the father she was alive but remained in captivity because of her refusal to renounce Christ and convert to Islam.
