UCL: John Stones tips Haaland to break Messi, Ronaldo’s record

Manchester City striker, Erling Haaland has been tipped to break the UEFA Champions League records of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo after his incredible display against RB Leipzig on Wednesday.

City defender and teammate, John Stones made this claim while answering interview questions from pressmen.

Haaland recently broke a long-standing record at Man City by becoming the club’s all-time leading scorer for a single season, with 39 goals.

The gangling forward scored five goals in Man City’s champions League game against RB Leipzig which they won 7-0.

He now has 33 goals from just 25 Champions League games so far in his career.

According to Stones, Haaland has got the prospect to emulate the incredible goal-scoring feats of Messi and Ronaldo who have netted 129 and 140 goals respectively in the UEFA Champions League.

“How do I go about this without putting pressure on Erling?” Stones said via Mirror Football when quizzed about Haaland emulating Ronaldo and Messi in the Champions League.

“He’d probably thrive off it. I believe he really could do what he wants, just from his hunger, his attitude and his professionalism and I’d love to see him do it, definitely.’

“I think he wants to just win. I think if you have that mentality, then the personal accolades just come naturally without chasing them. That could be totally wrong, but I think Erling is a huge team player and with that kind of mindset, he is going that way to break more records.”

  • EPL: Why I benched Ronaldo against Tottenham – Ten Hag

EPL: Why I benched Ronaldo against Tottenham – Ten Hag

Manchester United coach, Erik ten Hag has explained why he dropped Cristiano Ronaldo in Wednesday’s night clash against Tottenham.

Ronaldo was an unused substitute in the EPL encounter against Tottenham at Old Trafford with the Red Devils defeating Spurs 2-0.

Ten Hag had a preference for Marcus Rashford over the 37-year-old up front, despite that Ronaldo scored a hat-trick against Antonio Conte’s men last season.

It came as a surprise to see the Portuguese benched but Erik ten Hag insisted it was the right call.

Ronaldo stormed out of the Old Trafford pitch and went through the tunnel to the dressing room minutes before the final whistle was blown.

“We are building for the future, but the future is tonight,” the United boss told Amazon.

“You pick the line-up that you think has the most chance to win, and you have a game plan. Cristiano [Ronaldo] is an important player and he can make the goal.

“I have to deal with all the players’ expectations and I have to deal with developing this team. You have to make a game plan.

“This is a good Tottenham team, a compact, a transition team with high intensity and I think this is the best way to start like this. You get more runs behind, more dynamic up front.”

Cristiano Ronaldo has scored 14 goals in 20 games against Tottenham.

Int’l Friendly: Super Eagles, Portugal to clash in October

The Nigeria Football Federation and Federação Portuguesa de Futebol have signed a formal agreement for the Super Eagles and A Seleção to clash in a prestige senior team friendly at the Estádio José Alvalade in Lisbon on Thursday, 17th November.

Nigeria’s Super Eagles have won the Africa Cup of Nations on three occasions (as well as Olympic men’s football gold, silver, and bronze) while Portugal won her first continental trophy (Euro Championship) in France in 2016, defeating host France 1-0 after extra time at the Stade de France. As hosts, A Seleção lost the Euro Championship final to Greece in 2004.

Already billed to play 2019 African champions Algeria in Oran on 27th September, the encounter with Portugal is another ace by the Amaju Pinnick administration, which has enabled high-end international friendlies for the Super Eagles and other Nigeria National Teams over the past eight years.

Before now, the Super Eagles have played against five-time world champions Brazil, Argentina, England, Ukraine, Senegal, Mexico, Serbia, Poland, Cameroon, Czech Republic, Tunisia, Ecuador, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Mali.

The match with Portugal will be the first clash at the senior men level for both countries, though last year summer, the Super Falcons and the Senior Women Team of Portugal fought out a thrilling 3-3 draw in the USWNT Summer Series in Houston, Texas, USA.

It can also be recalled that in 1989, Portugal’s U20 boys defeated Nigeria’s U20 boys 2-0 in the final of the FIFA World Youth Championship (now FIFA U20 World Cup finals) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The Estádio José Alvalade is a natural grass facility that holds 50,000 spectators and is the home venue for Sporting Clube de Portugal. The facility is named after José Alvalade, the founder and first club member of Sporting CP who died in 1918. The stadium was opened in August 2003.

Portugal will be led by five-time Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo, easily one of the best footballers the world has ever seen, while the Super Eagles will be led at the fore by Italy-based forward Victor Osimhen, growing to be one of the most lethal strikers in world football.

  • Ronaldo Transfer News- ILOT BET

    Ronaldo Transfer News- ILOT BET

Christiano Ronaldo has few options to choose from after his contract ends with Manchester United. The 37 year old Portuguese player joined Manchester united in 2003 from sporting Lisbon for 12.24 million euro as a teenager at that time. Manchester united was his first ever English club to ever play for. He won three premier league titles and a champions’ league trophy during his first spell at old Trafford and he also won his first ballon d’Or while he was playing for Manchester united. Ronaldo left Manchester united on the 11th of June 2009 without leaving any indication that he was about to make that move. It was known when Manchester United announced he had “expressed his desire to leave” and that Real Madrid’s world record £80m offer had been accepted. Less than three weeks later, the transfer was concluded.

After he left Manchester united, Ronaldo played for Real Madrid from 2009 up till 2018. Then he joined Juventus where he played from 2018 till 2021. Ronaldo joined Man United from Juventus in the 2021 summer transfer window on August 27 for £12.85 million. The Portuguese was given the number 7 shirt as Edinson Cavani agreed to switch to 21. Ronaldo made his second debut against Newcastle and scored the opening two goals as the Red Devils won 4-1. As of October 2021, Ronaldo surpassed the $1billion mark for career earnings. Ronaldo is said to have a net worth of $500m. According to reports, the 37-year-old football star is reportedly earning £480,000-a-week at United since his return to the Premier League.

Christiano Ronaldo has shown interest to leave Manchester united, but he is currently running out of time and options after 2 clubs pulled out of the race to sign the Portuguese superstar. So many clubs around the world would want to have Ronaldo in their ranks but only some of these teams will be able to match both Ronaldo’s ambition and sky high wages.

The team of professionals at ILOT BET strongly believe Chelsea is one of the clubs everyone is expecting Ronaldo to sign with after news emerged last month that Ronaldo’s agent, Jorge Mendes met with Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly and the pair discussed the Portuguese’ potential transfer during their meeting. Despite that, it seems the chance for Ronaldo to move to Stamford Bridge is very slim, manager Thomas Tuchel is believed to not be too interested in the idea of Ronaldo joining the Blues, and with a deal for the Manchester united winger Raheem sterling, it seems like Ronaldo may not be signing with Chelsea.

Added to the frustrations surrounding the lack of signings, report claims Ronaldo has been left ‘unfulfilled’ by the reduction of player salaries [25%] as a result of their failure to play in the Champions League football. When he penned a deal at Old Trafford, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner agreed a £480,000-a-week contract with the club but this season, he would be set to earn a salary of £360,000 as united play in the Europa League. Ronaldo believes he has ‘three or four years’ left at the highest level, but some still believe he will remain in Manchester united.

I’m greater than my contemporaries; stop the comparisons, Cristiano Ronaldo warns fans

Cristiano Ronaldo on Sunday rated himself above his contemporaries while stating that there is nobody in the world with his ‘talent, dedication or work ethic’ and insisted no-one can be compared with him.

Recall that the five-time Ballon d’Or winner as always being a subject of debate with Barcelona’s talisman; Messi over who is better?

Speaking in a new Nike advert, Ronaldo said: ‘In the beginning I was dreaming to be best player in the world.

Friends of mine, they look at me like, “what are you talking about?” I played for fun, for a joke, but in my mind I think that potential started in Manchester, that’s when I started to believe.

I don’t see many people with my talent, my dedication, my work, my ethic of football. No-one is going to be compared with me, no-one is going to be Cristiano Ronaldo. You’re going to be yourself, I’m going to be myself.’
