Christmas: Share Joy, Hope Among All, Archbishop Martins Urges Nigerians

The Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Most Rev. Alfred Adewale Martins has called on all Nigerians to celebrate the joy of Christmas and the birth of Jesus Christ, despite the insecurity and economic challenges in our country.

In his 2021 Christmas message titled, ‘Joy to the world, the Lord is come’, signed by the Director of Social Communications, Rev. Fr. Anthony Godonu, Archbishop Martins also encouraged all citizens to be grateful to God for the gift of life, and for the grace of surviving the numerous security challenges that have arisen in the outgoing year.

“Being alive to witness yet another Christmas is a great gift from God that should never be taken for granted particularly in our present realities. We know that thousands who started this year with us are no longer here; having fallen victim to the endemic insecurity in the land caused by kidnappers, bandits, Boko Haram terrorists, COVID-19, amongst others. Having come thus far, we must remain thankful and hopeful that the good Lord will sustain us to the end of this year and beyond.”

While calling on all Nigerians, irrespective of their religious and tribal inclinations, to learn to live in peace, love and unity as exemplified by the life of Jesus Christ, he equally urged them to put aside their fears and open their minds and hearts to the beautiful message of the season.

“The message of Christmas is a message of hope for everyone. The message that God loves us so much that He sent His only Son to redeem us and show us the way to the Father in heaven, should raise our hope that all is not lost despite all our problems” he said. God cares and is in control even if it is difficult to see.

The Archbishop also charged all Nigerians to offer all that is within their power in order to bring joy to people especially those in a state of despair. This should be the desire of everyone not only in this season but all the time. He said:

We must be generous to the less-privileged in our midst through our kind words of affirmation and offering the support that we can as our proclamation of the joyous tidings that ‘God is with us.’ By so doing, we will, in no small measure, help to dampen the wave of violence and hunger in our land, awaken hope in the hopeless, give water of life to the thirsty and food to the hungry as well as joy to those in distress. These are what God expects from us during this yuletide and beyond.”

Finally, the Prelate enjoined the Federal Government to redouble efforts in stemming the tide of insecurity in the country, particularly during the yuletide and New Year celebrations. In the midst of insecurity and anxiety due to the killings, kidnappings etc, people must be able to see hope in the actions and policies of their governments.

Congratulations are due Yusuf Buhari, the wave-making, only son of President Muhammadu Buhari, who was last week turbaned as the Talban Daura and District Head of Kwasarawa Community. It is indeed a worthy recognition for the young man whose destiny, bound for the skies, was nearly truncated by his only known hobby, in a motorcycle accident. As most people would recall, Yusuf had to undergo extensive life saving emergency treatment in Nigeria and Germany after his very expensive BMW motorbike was involved in that near fatal accident.

It is indeed very fitting, and it makes me happy, that the Daura Emirate Council, which recently appointed President Buhari’s nephew, Musa Haro, as district head of Buhari’s ancestral town of Dumurkol, has further shown their love for the President for the massive developmental strides, in the words of the Emir of Daura, Alhaji Farouk Umar, he has brought to the emirate. As to what the duties of the Talban Daura is, that is, apart from being District Head, Emir Farouk Umar notes he would be visiting Daura regularly and participating in the daily routine of the emirate council. This puts paid to haters who question what Yusuf does for a living apart from occupying the exalted office of Son of the President!

I am particularly pleased that it is not an emirate in Niger Republic, or Mali for that matter, which decided to honour the Talban Daura. All the haters of the Buhari government would have taken to the media space to vent their impotent anger. As most people know, the decision of President Buhari to take billions of dollars in Chinese loans to build, first a refinery in Niger, and subsequently roads and a high speed connecting railway line to Niger, when most of Nigeria is yet to have a functional railway service; and when even the ones completed or built by this regime are narrow gauge, would have incurred their caustic mouths. This should shut the mouths of those who think that President Buhari loves his ancestral connection to Niger more than he does Nigeria. Even if the rest of Nigeria spew hate at him, he is surely recognised and honoured in his home town.

It is, nevertheless, unfortunate and it pains me, sorely, that I couldn’t join vice president Yemi Osinbajo, Senate President Ahmed Lawan, Speaker of the House of Representative, Femi Gbajabiamila, Governors and creme de la creme of the Nigerian society in honouring the District Head of Kwasarawa, son of the President. Much as I desired to go, the combined military and security services, burdened by the high calibre dignitaries honouring the event just could not make sufficient escort arrangements for people like me. For even if one were to land by private jet in the state, one still needed a huge retinue of Army, DSS, Police, vigilantes to successfully navigate the route to the turbaning, and return, to board ones private plane. There is no reason going to spoil the day for the young man, and the government, by making a foolish decision to go unaided by the security forces to the event. That would not only have been foolhardy, it would have been suicidal. It would have been treasonable, if one survives it.

This is because, as President Buhari recently noted, the “highly degraded”, “defeated” and “demoralised” terrorists who are making life unbearable for the peoples of Zamfara, Kaduna, Sokoto, Borno, Yobe, Benue, Plateau and so on; and who indeed have spread their tentacles all over the country, are venting their frustration “on soft target innocent citizens, looting their assets, burning their homes and killing them indiscriminately” It was better doing the patriotic thing by staying glued to the television watching the event from kilometres away.

Recall that when the jihadists and felons, terrorising the North East butchered a number of farmers recently, the farmers were rightly blamed for not informing the security forces that they wanted to go to their farms. Same goes for the Kaduna state legislator and the 38 other people murdered last week by the fiends. As it has become their fate, the Christian South of Kaduna are the soft targets of the bloody tasty gangs who maim, kill and destroy unchallenged.

What about the huge harvest of deaths in Sokoto and states in that zone? Just last week, over 40 people were set ablaze in the commercial vehicle they boarded by the Bello Turji terrorist group. There was even a foolish rumour the same week that the revered Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, who has of recent been forced to join the gang of wailers, along with some prominent Emirs and religious leaders in the north, had to be rushed out of a mosque when the terrorists struck, kidnapping some worshippers.

The brazen effrontery of the merchant of deaths is now the stuff of eulogy and praise singing by musicians and griots in the north. They control large chunk of areas in some of these states. It is yet unknown how many local government areas that have been quarantined in the strong grip of the terrorists who now levy taxes and sundry fines on the people. Indeed, in these soft target local government areas, for you to farm or trade, you must pay tax to the criminal authorities. Hence, it is no surprise that one of the criminal warlords, Mohammed Bello Turji Kachalla, whose criminal gang is said to be responsible for much of the killings in the Zamfara, Sokoto axis is lionised, feared and worshipped. He is the reason Adamu Ayuba, a musician, has incurred the wrath of the security forces for eulogising the felon in his songs.

In Nigeria today, it is only those who want to confirm their hatred for the Buhari government who foolishly lend themselves to the terrorists to use as soft targets. For example, the Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi lamented recently at a public function, attended by the Senate President, the Speaker and members of the National Assembly, among other political chieftains, that because, like other Nigerian big men, the political bigwigs can no longer visit their constituencies, they have abandoned traditional rulers who now see themselves as members of the soft targets, President Buhari mentioned through his spokesman, Garba Shehu.

As all sensible big men and political chieftains know, they are prime targets for terrorists, kidnappers and sundry criminals, should they venture, either to go by road or go in their private jets to their states and constituencies. This has informed why most have relocated important family members from their villages and cities to Abuja, or Lagos, or abroad. None of them want to be the victim of the terrorists, who the Presidency say, the military have turned the hit on. They have decided, wisely, not to burden the President with writing, yet another heart rendering condolence letter by being a soft target.

Which is why i enjoyed the spat between that trouble maker, Reno Omokri, a former aide of President Goodluck Jonathan, a PDP mole, who from his American base will not let this government “drink water and put the cup down”. He recently, wickedly, challenged the presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu, to go spend a weekend in his village in Bama Local government area of Borno state, sans security escorts, and get gifted $50,000. Omokri had challenge Shehu because he stated that President Buhari deserves credit for tackling insecuity in Nigeria. To Reno’s irreverent pomposity, Shehu retorted: “my message to anyone who made money using Leah Sharibu’s sad ordeal and they are flaunting it remains unchanged: This is blood money. I don’t need any of it. Period.

Only the brave would take up such a challenge. I sure won’t. Even $50 million won’t tempt me except I am able to make discreet arrangements with you-know-who and we have a concrete agreement. If not, my answer, like my senior colleague Garba Shehu, would be, No thank you. Which is why without the combined security escort, I couldn’t venture to attend the event of the year in Daura. As we say in Waffi: e pain me, nobi small.

Christmas drama: Taskforce storms Abuja recreational parks, sends fun seekers home

The FCT Ministerial Task Team on Enforcement of COVID-19 Protocols on Christmas Day cleared some recreational parks of fun seekers who trooped there to celebrate Christmas.

Some of the parks where fun-seekers were sent out by taskforce included the famous Millennium Park, Jabi Lake, Unity Fountain and Magic Land.

Although the gates at the Jabi Lake were closed, some anxious fun-seekers made their way into the park through porous entry points.

Upon arrival at the Lake, many of the violators took to their heels for fear of being arrested but the task force had to call them to sensitise them on the need to adhere to safety regulations.

Head, Media and Enlightenment of the task force, Mr Ikharo Attah, who addressed the fun seekers, said that the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic seemed tougher.

According to him, the FCT Administration cannot allow people to gather in crowds, contrary to the directives of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 (PTF).

“We know you all want to enjoy Christmas but you can do it at home. We plead for your understanding on this matter. We don’t want to hurt anybody but we have a duty to save residents from contracting the virus,’’ Attah said.

Addressing journalists after shutting down the Magic Land Park by the Abuja city gate, the Media Head, who expressed sympathies with the residents, said that there will be more celebrations in the future if they abide by the safety protocol.

“We are truly pained doing this on this day but we have the responsibility to save lives and protect FCT residents from being infected with COVID-19.

“We see in large numbers, children who have come to these recreation centres to have the best of Christmas.

“They look obviously unhappy and we are feeling their pains and disappointment.’’

Christmas: Don’t let our challenges make you lose hope, PDP tells Nigerians

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged Nigerians to use the Christmas and yuletide celebrations to rekindle hope and trust in God’s divine intervention in the affairs of the nation.

It made the appeal in a statement on Thursday by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, to commemorate this year’s Christmas.

The party believes Christmas rekindles faith that all hope is not lost for Nigeria, claiming that the failures of the current administration have led to widespread economic hardship and worsened insecurity in the country.

It also decried that under the circumstances, most families have nothing to celebrate with as many were mourning the losses from the increased rate of insecurity.

“Nevertheless, we must keep hope alive and find strength in God’s unfailing intervention as demonstrated with the gift of salvation in the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ.

“Indeed, Christmas offers us a great lesson as a nation that no matter how long darkness, characterised by violence, oppression, economic repression, hunger, abuse of rights, disregard to the need of the people, and widespread corruption, as we have witnessed in the last five years, may appear to dominate, salvation will surely come as exemplified in the birth of the saviour,” the PDP said.

It added, “Our party, therefore, urges Nigerians to use this period to intensify their bond of unity, as well as comfort and reach out to one another in love so that the joy that Christmas brings would not be lost.”

The PDP stressed that Nigerian leaders must have some introspection, show remorse, and review their policies which it said have brought anguish to the people.

It prayed to God for healing, stability, and prosperity of the country, as well as blissful Christmas and yuletide celebrations.

Pray for a united, peaceful Plateau, Lalong urges Christians at Christmas

Gov. Simon Lalong of Plateau has urged citizens of the state, particularly Christians, to use the Christmas season to pray for a united and peaceful state.

The governor made the call in a Christmas message signed by his Director of Press and Public Affairs (DOPA), Dr Makut Macham, on Thursday in Jos.

The governor urged the citizens to show love to one another, adding that this year’s Christmas was being celebrated at the time the world was passing through serious challenges occasioned by the Covid-19 pandemic.

“The world and indeed Plateau State is going through tremendous challenges occasioned by the Coronavirus which has significantly altered human interactions and impacted negatively on the economy.

“This has resulted in hardship to both the government and citizens. Nevertheless, we have collectively demonstrated resilience and hope.

“This should continue, especially as we mark the birth of Jesus Christ, who primarily came to give hope to mankind.

“As Christians, we should not only be hopeful, but also use this period to show love to one another, as well as work for a more united, peaceful and tolerant society,” the governor said.

Lalong said his administration would continue to develop policies that would grow the economy and uplift the living standards of the ordinary citizens.

“This administration will continue to give the needed leadership that will fast-track economic recovery and stimulate empowerment of youths, women and the entire citizenry,” he said.

He called on the residents of the state to adhere to the safety protocols to curb the spread of Covid-19 during the Yuletide.

Christmas: Jonathan urges Nigerians to show love to one another

Former President Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has charged Nigerians to show love to one another as they celebrate Christmas on Friday.

The former president, in a statement extended his warm felicitations to Nigerians as the world celebrates Christmas to mark the birth of Jesus Christ.

According to Jonathan, the spirit of Christmas required people of the world to rededicate themselves to friendship, kindness and compassion.

“Christmas is the day, in the calendar of Christendom, that marks the birth of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. It is a commemoration that connects the world to love, selflessness, sacrifice and solidarity; which are the virtues that Christ unambiguously propagated.

“Jesus’ message of salvation speaks to the essence of both spiritual deliverance and earthly redemption. It is a constant reminder that humanity will have a more peaceful existence if people of the world rededicate themselves to friendship, kindness and compassion.

“People have been through so much in 2020, including navigating the snares of the deadly novel Covid19 pandemic. At Christmas the world needs love. This is the spirit we have to imbibe to heal all that is broken in our world,” he stated.

  • Christmas: Abuja residents groan as prices of food items hit rooftop

Christmas: Abuja residents groan as prices of food items hit rooftop

    By Emman Ovuakporie

As Nigerians celebrate this year’s Yuletide, the prices of food items in the capital city, Abuja hit the rooftop.

TheNewsGuru.com, (TNG) visited some markets in Abuja satellite towns to carry out an on the spot assessment.

At the Gwagwa market, the prices of broiler was between N5k-N10k and bags of local rice were sold at between N25k and N28k.

Dutse market along Bwari road too had a semblance in prices of food items like chicken and rice across board.

Also at the three major markets in Kubwa, prices of chicken and rice remained constant like other markets in neighbouring satellite towns in Dutse, Gwagwa, Kaigini, Dede and Bwari.

Some of the traders who spoke to TNG attributed the rise in prices to insecurity on “our highways”.

A market woman in Dutse who simply gave her name as Moraimo from Kogi said”the prices are higher than last year because our roads are occupied by kidnappers and bandits.

“Poultry farmers are also complaining of the cost of feeds for chicken so they have to pass the difference to customers.

“These chickens we are selling for N7500.00 to N10,000.00 we sold them for between N5k to N6k last year.

“But this year it’s different because we don’t get supplies early and when they’re supplied they come with extra cost.

TNG recalls that earlier in the year poultry farmers had cried out that smaller poultry farmers are shutting down their farms because of the high cost of feeds.

Poultry farmers under the auspices of Poultry Association of Nigeria, PAN, had in June urged the Federal Government to come to their rescue, lamenting that their farms were crumbling over the rising cost of maize and soya beans.

They lamented that small poultry farms were closing down as a result of the high cost of feeds.

Delta State Chairman of PAN, Chief Alfred Mrakpor had earlier in the year appealed to the Federal government to save the local poultry industry from total collapse due to the high cost of poultry feeds.

Mrakpor lamented the large numbers of small scale poultry farms that have closed as a result of exorbitant prices of critical ingredients in poultry feed formulation.

The situation seems to have manifested in the high cost of poultry products in this year’s Yuletide.
