Shi’ites attend Christmas service in Zaria

Shi’ites, an Islamic group, joined Christians at a Christmas Service at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Samaru, Zaria, Kaduna State on Monday to strengthen religious harmony and unity between religious groups.

Leader of the Shi’ite group, Prof. Isah-Hassan Mshelgaru, said it acknowledged Christmas as a day for festivities, friendliness and unity.

He added that joining Christian faithful as they marked Christmas was meant to renew hope for divine unity among Muslims, Christians and other religions.

Mshelgaru said the visit to the church by the group for Christmas was to strengthen relationship between the two faith groups.

He noted that Islam and Christianity were revered faiths with more than 90 per cent of Nigeria’s population as adherents.

“When other faithful unite with the two faith groups, it means the whole of Nigerian is united,’’ he said.

Speaking on the impact of the visit, Mshelgaru said as a group, it started visits to churches more than 25 years ago and since then there had been improved understanding between the group and Christians.

“The visit has reduced the fears and some animosities between the two faith groups. They (Christians) are now open to us; we share sentiments and problems together.

“The regular exchange of visits has bridged the gaps between us,’’ he said.

Earlier, the parish priest, Most Rev. Isak Augustine, commended the Islamic group for the visit and urged the group for more visits to strengthen religious harmony and unity.

He prayed for the peace of God to come into Nigeria and to salvage the country from myriad socio-economic challenges.

The Shi’ite group later presented gifts to the Catholic Church.

Joy to the world – By Sonnie Ekwowusi

It’s another Christmas, the dies natalis (birthday) of Jesus Christ. At Christmas, we are invited to relive that deepest mystery that took place more than 2000 years ago. As the Psalmist puts it: “A child shall be born for us, and he will be called God, the Almighty; every tribe of the earth shall be blessed by him”. Prophet Malachi unhesitatingly joins in re-echoing the urgency, immediacy, and the eschatological underpinning of his coming. “But who will endure the day of his coming? And who can stand when he appears” (Mal. 3.1-4)? When peaceful silence enveloped the earth, and the night had run half of its swift course, God, who had taken flesh in the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary, chose to be born in the relatively humble city of David called Bethlehem. St. Josemaria Escriva recaptured it in these words: “When the fullness of time came, no philosophical genius, no Plato or Socrates, appears to fulfill the mission of redemption. Nor does a powerful conqueror, another Alexander, take over the earth. Instead, a child is born in Bethlehem.” Meanwhile, Pope Francis invites us to speak to and listen to the newborn child Jesus. “Let us turn our eyes to Bethlehem and listen to the first faint cries of the Prince of Peace. For truly, Jesus is our peace,” he says.

The events leading up to the birth of Christ are a salutary lesson in humility, self-abnegation, love, and self-sacrificing service. Presidents, Emperors, and Kings of this world are born in special hospitals, but Christ chose to be born in an animal pen. He came to serve, not to be served. Even as a newborn baby, he allowed himself to experience suffering, want, and deprivation. He was laid in a manger, not in a golden bed. Animals were the first to witness his birth. He was the light. He cared for both the spiritually and materially poor. He condemned injustice. He fed the hungry. Seeing the widow of Naim, who lost her only son, He wept. Later, he allowed himself to be crucified on the cross and, by doing so, redeemed mankind and made the cross the pathway to salvation.

Therefore, following the exemplary life of Christ, world leaders should bring light to the dark land, hope to the hopeless, justice to the oppressed, and integrity to the wasteland. This Christmas affords an opportunity for Russian and Ukrainian leaders to humbly return to the roundtable and re-negotiate a peaceful settlement and ceasefire to the war between the two countries. Equally, we call on Israel and Palestine to end the latest war, strife, and hostilities that have engulfed the Middle East and have claimed uncountable precious human lives, especially the lives of innocent children. In particular, let us pray for peace in Bethlehem, located about 10 kilometers (6.2 mi) south of Jerusalem, where Jesus Christ was born more than 2,000 years ago. We continue to pray for peace in war-torn Southern Sudan. We pray for an end to the bloody conflicts and instability in Libya, Somalia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Mali, and the Central African Republic (CAR).

Back home in Nigeria, we pray for an end to the Boko Haram insurgency, kidnapping, banditry, abduction, arson, and political hired assassination. We pray for a responsible and incorruptible judiciary in Nigeria. We pray that our political leaders should learn from Christ the lesson of altruistic dedicated service to the people. Nigerian political office holders should be ashamed that, while they live in a spendthrift, pompous exhibition of their ill-gotten wealth, many Nigerians are dying in agony in penury. Many federal highways are in bad shape. Many Nigerians will be celebrating this Christmas in darkness due to electricity supply failure that has paralyzed social and communal life across the country. The worst part is that Nigerians who have money in their bank accounts cannot collect them to purchase Christmas goodies owing to the scarcity of the Naira currency. Many illegally detained prisoners will be celebrating Christmas in various prisons across the country. Many sick people will be celebrating it in their sick beds in hospitals. The security of lives and property is not even guaranteed. By now, kidnappers must be sharpening their hands in readiness for the great kidnapping, which will be unleashed in different parts of the country at Christmas. Of course, in this Christmastime, commercial bus drivers drive recklessly; traders swindle hapless customers; workers embezzle their employer’s money; kidnappers and armed robbers lay siege to the country’s highways to kidnap Christmas travelers and rob them of their belongings.

Therefore, this Christmas calls for a deeper reflection and repentance. In general, we need a new humanism in Nigeria. We must learn to see our neighbors as human beings, not just mere instruments to be used to satisfy our selfish interests. The self-sacrificing service of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph at the first Christmas is a spur to us to be less self-centered and attend to the needs of our fellow men and women.

Christmas underlines the importance of the family in nation-building. Jesus was born into a family of Joseph and Mary. Everything in the Holy family of Jesus, Joseph, and Mary bespeaks the family values of concern, service, dedication, and altruism. The family is the nucleus of society. The family plays a vital role in the upbringing of a person. All the things that shape the life of an adult are what he/she learned from his family or from his parents in childhood. Any wonder the family has been dubbed as “the shaper of values.” The values that the family institution imparts into the child eventually form the superstructure around which the child’s future behavior will revolve. And for us in Africa and Nigeria, the family, viewed from a historical and cultural context, essentially doubles as the provider of those “social safety-nets” that a person needs to grow up to become a responsible member of society.

Finally, Christmastime is a time to regain our laughter and sense of humor. Everything may be collapsing; politics may become synonymous with hypocrisy, but with our laughter, we can challenge the sad world to look at us and be hopeful.

Thanks for your company in clothing the naked public square in 2023.

    A joyful Christmas.

Tinubu have no excuses, God will not forgive if you fail – Bishop Kukah

The Bishop of Sokoto Catholic Diocese, Mathew Kukah has said the Nigerian president, Bola Ahmed Tinubu has no excuses to make the country a better place for the citizens.

Kukah made this known in his 2023 Christmas message themed, “Time to Reclaim Nigeria’s Greatness,” stating neither God nor history will forgive Tinubu if he fails.

The cleric is of the view that the President has no excuse because, for many years, he had prayed, dreamt, wished, and plotted to lead Nigeria.

He said, “Mr. President, Sir, congratulations and a happy Christmas. Now, you have what you prayed for, what you dreamt of, what you longed for. For the better part of over 20 years, you have plotted to be our President. For years, you campaigned for a new Nigeria through restructuring or overhauling the defective machinery of the Nigerian state.

“Mr President, you have no excuses before God or the people of Nigeria. Neither God nor history will not forgive you if you fail. This is our moment, our date with history. Now, all eyes and ears are on you. Our prayers for a united country are with you,” part of Kukah’s message read.

Christmas: We feel your pains, never despair, LP tells Nigerians

The Labour Party (LP) in Lagos State on Monday urged Nigerians, especially Lagos residents, not to despair despite the current challenges facing the nation.

The Lagos State LP Chairperson, Pastor Dayo Ekong, said this in her message to Nigerians in commemoration of the 2023 Christmas celebration.

The message was issued by Mrs Olubunmi Odesanya, the LP Publicity Secretary in the state.

Ekong described the season as a moment of joy, peace and reflection of God’s goodness and love to humanity.

According to her, there is still hope for the nation, no matter the intensity of the current economic pains.

“Labour Party in Lagos State felicitates with the Christians in the State, the nation and the entire world on this very important occasion.

“We feel your pain and request that you do not despair.

“Every pain and suffering has an expiry date and we know, for sure, that the chain of hardship, struggles and gloomy future will be broken soon,” she said.

Abuja residents groan and moan as prices of chicken and foodstuffs hit rooftop as Nigerians celebrate Christmas today.

In a short survey conducted by TheNewsGuru.com on eve of Christmas day, it was lamentations all through as most women revealed that foodstuffs and chicken mostly used during yuletide were unaffordable.

At the Kubwa village market many customers were sighted moving from one axis of the market to the other wearing long faces.

A lady who identified herself as Iyabo Kayode told our correspondent that:”Look around you do you see anybody buying anything, we are just here for window shopping and nothing else.

“Look at my long list here, I have been here for well over 2hours and I have not been able to buy a sachet of crayfish.

“All the prices of just last week have suddenly gone up, even ‘ugwu’ vegetable that we normally buy for N200 for a bunch is now N800. Tomatoes and pepper are now the exclusive of the rich.

Another woman, Mrs Christiana Chijoke at Dede market spoke in the same vein declaring that”honestly I am fed up things can’t continue this way there’s nothing that is affordable.

“N20,000.00 is like N500 of 2015 because with just N500 then you can at least buy tomatoes and pepper then little oil to cook something without chicken and meat.

“I came to this Dede market and till now it’s difficult for me to decide on what to buy at least for us to celebrate Christmas.

“How long will this continue because by January schools will resume we will now start thinking of how to pay school fees with empty stomachs.

A man who claimed to be a poultry farmer at the Dutse market had this to say: “This 2023 na small we de see so because by 2024 one broiler go reach N50,000.00.

“You know why, price of one bag of feeds for chicken de go up everyday, now the price na N16,000.00 we never know wetin go happen next year oh!

“If we start to de buy feeds from next year for N20,000.00 for one bag expect to buy old layer for between N6500 and N8000.

TNG recalls that inflation rate increased to 28.2 per cent in November showing a 0.87 per cent points increase over the 27.33 per cent recorded in October.

This is alarming as there’s no price control mechanism that has really worked in Nigeria and the withdrawal of fuel subsidy has further fueled price increase across all sectors of the Nigerian economy.

700 Airbus Atlantic staff are believed to have fallen ill following the company’s Christmas dinner, health authorities in France have said.

Workers from the aerospace group’s site in western France were left suffering from vomiting and diarrhoea, according to the ARS health agency.

Airbus Atlantic is a subsidiary of the world’s largest aircraft maker, Airbus, and employs 15,000 people in five countries.

ARS did not provide details about exactly what food might have made people ill at the dinner, which took place last week, but it did say earlier on Friday that diners showed “clinical signs of vomiting or diarrhea”.

An investigation was being launched to find the source of the mass food poisoning, the organisation told the AFP news agency.

The wider Airbus group employs 134,000 people and provides products and services in the aircraft, helicopter, defence, space and security industries.

In a separate incident in France earlier this year, a number of people fell ill and a Greek national died, after contracting the rare food-borne illness botulism at a restaurant in Bordeaux. (BBC)

SAD! Woman killed by falling Christmas tree at market square

A woman was killed and two people were injured by a large Christmas tree that fell over in the Belgian city of Oudenaarde on Thursday evening, authorities said on Friday.

A spokesman for the Oost-Vlaanderen province prosecutor said the victim was a 63-year-old woman from Oudenaarde.

Two women from the same town were lightly injured in the incident.

“The investigation will focus on whether the tree had been properly secured and will also look at the impact of the weather,” he said.

Storm Pia, which has disrupted traffic in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands on Thursday, hit western Belgium on Thursday and the weather service had issued a yellow code warning for the coastal areas.
