Woman breakdowns in church while fasting, dies in Lagos hospital

The family of a woman, Joy Owoyele, is in sorrow after she died during a 14-day fasting in the Isheri Olofin area of Lagos State.

According to reports, Owoyele had sought spiritual help regarding her matrimonial challenges at the Christ Apostolic Church, Ori-Oke Gbogunmi, aka Ajanpelenbe Mountain, located on Pipeline Road, Isheri Olofin.

She was said to have been placed on 14-day fasting and prayer, but on the 10th day, things took a tragic turn as she suddenly collapsed after the morning prayers inside the church.

The pastor, Alfred Sunday, said after Owoyele lost consciousness during the spiritual exercise, she was rushed to the Igando General Hospital for treatment, adding that she died in the process.

Sunday said, “She came for prayers and nothing more. Before the day of the incident, we held a vigil and she was fine. Her fasting was supposed to be for 14 days, but the incident happened on the 10th day. God is my witness, there is nothing hidden here.

“Her daughter, Oluwatise, was also with her in the church during the spiritual exercise and they always slept together. The incident happened around 7am. I was praying on the altar when one of the church members informed me that she had passed out.

“When I moved closer to assess her, I observed that she could not stand up and when I called her name, she answered faintly. We had to rush her to the Igando General Hospital for treatment, but she died.” Sunday told Punch.

The cleric noted that he went to the Idimu Police Station to report the sad occurrence, adding that during investigation, the police imprisoned him and the General Overseer of the church.

He stated, “When I reported the incident, the police took my statement and that of the victim’s daughter. But the General Overseer and I were detained for three days and the police also visited the church to conduct an investigation.

“But the family insisted on not pressing any charge and after the police investigation, we were released. I met with the woman’s family immediately after the incident and they accepted what happened as fate.

“During the spiritual exercise, she was fasting and praying, and usually broke her fasts with honey and water. But on the 10th day, she became very weak and we had to rush her to hospital to save her, but she died.

“After the incident, we insist that anyone embarking on fasting and prayer in the church must break with pap instead of honey and water that we usually use. Anyone who refuses won’t be allowed to embark on the spiritual exercise in the church.”

A source also revealed that Owoyele had been fasting and praying persoanlly over her botched marriage before she sought spiritual help in the church.

“The woman’s daughter said she was in the habit of running from pillar to post in search of spiritual help so that her husband, who had abandoned her and her daughter for seven years, could return,” the source said.

We’re saddened by invasion of Kaduna church, killing, abduction of our members – CAN

The Kaduna State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria has condemned the Sunday killing and abduction of church worshippers at the Haske Baptist Church, Manni Kuriga in Chikun Local Government Area of the state.

The bandits in large numbers were said to have invaded the church at about 9.00am when Sunday service was ongoing and shot indiscriminately at worshippers, killing one and abducting scores of them.

A medical doctor with the State Ministry of Health, Dr. Zakariya Dogo Taro, was shot dead.

“Dr. Zakariah Dogo Yaro, a medical doctor with the Kaduna State Ministry of Health was shot dead and an unspecified number of people kidnapped while so many worshipers sustained varying degrees of injuries.

“As am talking to you now, we have not seen some of our villagers who ran into the bushes while the shootings were going on.

“We don’t know what’s happening that we are facing this kind of scenario in our peaceful communities. Most Villagers are threatening to leave their homes because of the constant attacks in so many villages in Chukun Local Government,” Yakubu Bala, an eyewitness said.

Reacting, the Kaduna CAN through its Secretary, Rev. Caleb Maaji, condemned the attack, noting that the organization was saddened by the development.

He expressed concern over the sorry state of the security situation in the country and in particular, Kaduna State, and urged the government to talk less and act before citizens would resort to self-help.

The CAN’s scribe in a statement said, “Our hearts are saddened over the sorry see security situation in our dear state (Kaduna State). It has grown so unfortunate and on a daily basis continues to grow worst with no appreciable resistance given the unholy terrorists who have continued to hold our dear state and nation to ransom.

“Today 25th April 2021, innocent worshipers who went out for nothing but to worship and pray to God were attacked, a medical doctor and one other person killed, many members injured and others taken into captivity.

“This is happening in a nation that her constitution allows freedom of religion yet this freedom is not guaranteed.

“CAN Kaduna State continues to wonder what the crime of innocent citizens is, how come the terrorist appear more free and protected than the citizens?

“This is a challenge to the government, indeed a government that is unable to guarantee the safety of its citizens and their properties will be best termed a failed government.

“Our hearts go to the local church at Manini, the Nigeria Baptist Convention and family members of the deceased. We are appealing to relevant agencies and praying for the safe release of the abducted members and indeed all others in captivity.

“We also enjoined all men and women of goodwill to continue to wake up and do the needful before we are all consumed by the ongoing evil of banditry and kidnapping that has hijacked our country especially Kaduna State.

“The Kaduna State Government and the FG should stop making noise about insecurity and simply act now before Nigerians will have no option than to turn to self-help.”

The latest attack is coming on the heels of the bandits’ abduction and killing of three students of the Greenfield University along the Kaduna-Abuja Highway even as negotiation was on.

We didn’t authorize erection of mosque beside church – KPPA

The Kwara State Physical Planning Authority (KPPA) has dissociated itself from granting approval for the construction of a Central Mosque beside the Catholic Diocese around the Tanke Junction in Ilorin.

KPPA General Manager, Mr Sikiru Oyinloye, who disclosed this on Saturday at a news conference in Ilorin, denied the involvement of the agency in the construction of the Ummul Khairah Memorial Central Mosque in the area.

He said that the owners of the mosque and church had a mutual agreement that both worship centres should operate side-by-side.

The general manager explained that the initial approval that was granted to the owner of the mosque was for a business mall before it was converted to a mosque.

According to him, there are guidelines that are followed before an approval can be granted for the construction of a worship centre.

He stated that both parties later came to KPPA office “to inform us that a Memorandom of Understanding has been reached that the two worship centres should be allowed to coexist side-by-side without hindrance from either side.

Meanwhile, the General Manager has announced that KPPA has commenced the massive demolition of illegal structures in the state.

He said that shops in two different locations on Fate Road and Lower Sabo Line, both in the Ilorin metropolis, have been demolished because they were awarded Certificate of Temporary Occupancy (CTO).

According to Oyinloye, the CTO “implies that such buildings or shops can be demolished anytime by the authority after serving the occupier a seven-day notice to vacate.

“As at the time they were presented with the CTO document by the Kwara State Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, they were also given prototype of what to construct.

“It is mandatory for all land owners to approach the KPPA for advice before erecting any structure on their land.

He said the affected shops have earlier been marked for demolition, saying that they were built on places which government reserved for electricity poles, road setbacks, walkways and other public uses.

Oyinloye, who also solicited support from the media towards educating the people on the dangers associated with illegal structures, warned that demolition of illegal structures was a continuous exercise. (

Cherubim and Seraphim Church closes four Ondo branches over fetish activities

The Cherubim and Seraphim Church (C&S) has sealed four branches in Ondo after the presiding pastors were caught engaging in fetish activities.

President of Ondo State unification of leaders of C&S Primate Ade Ademisokun-Turton, who disclosed this at a briefing on Wednesday, said the churches were sealed to stop the pastors from tarnishing the image of the church.

Ademisokun-Turton said any pastor that required training would be allowed to come in.

He said leaders of the C&S have settled their rifts and are united as a body.

Ademisokun-Turton, who spoke on his installation as Baba Alakoso of unification of leaders of C&S, said his deputy, seven council of elders and three baba Aladuras would also be installed.

“We may not be one in the past before, but now we are one body there were some people that want to join us and that is why we want to train them. Not too long ago, we sealed some churches and they still remained sealed because they don’t know anything about C&S, we are not going to take that anymore,” he said.

“Those who have accepted to be trained would be allowed to come in. We have sealed about 4 churches now caught doing fetish because we have zero tolerance for fetish in C&S.

“We believe we are the first Pentecostal church in the whole of Africa and the spirit of the Lord is still with us so the missing areas that have not been properly addressed by our leaders have now been readdressed. We now represent the new testament because those things that were taken for granted have been taken serious now.

“We are making efforts to formally have a training school for our officials, it is not enough to have a calling but someone must be trained. We realise that where things are missing needs proper training to make a church grow.”

“We realise the importance of control and we have all agreed that there must be control through the Holy Spirit, we need to control our public image and integrity. We want the Church to be founded by those who knows the rudiment of the Church so that we will not be embarrassed.”

  • Black Cross 2: Cowardice And The Church, A failed Nation, By Anthony Eferhirhie Abugu

Black Cross 2: Cowardice And The Church, A failed Nation, By Anthony Eferhirhie Abugu

    By Anthony Eferhirhie Abugu

In the noble words of the great writer Charles Dicken in Great Expectations ‘In a word, I was too cowardly to avoid doing what I knew to be wrong’ and this is the present situation of the Church of Christ in Nigeria. A cowardly church whose leaders are only brave to bind and cast out devils but physically full of fear to face the political peril that has devastated our great nation. A cowardly church that knows how to invite politicians to their Sunday services and spiritual Congress but will turn a blind eye when the same politicians are making bad laws that will erode the normalcy of lives of the citizens. A cowardly church that believes more in the power of God than political power while Walter Annenberg asserted that ‘the greatest power is not money power, but political power’. Political power is what the church of Christ needs to change the course of this great nation. Aghast, a thought foregone, forgotten, and forbidden for the church to continue to pray for politicians and the nation rather the church must deliberately involve in politics and get the vote of the people to change the nation. What use is of the prayer of a coward church? A church that will not act their prayers and leave everything for God thereby displaying the greatest height of social irresponsibility with the fray notions of treason. A coward church that believes that politics is a dirty game, a fight of blood and sweat yet the same church will pray for these dirty men in power to do clean things forgetting the theory of nature that likes beget like. Dirt will beget dirt. You can see that in the northern states that are mostly terrorized by terrorists and bandits.

Also, the cowardice of the church of Christ will prompt you to ask must the love of nation be stronger than the love of God? If it is the duty of every man to fight and defend their nation, why then is the church of Christ in Nigeria shying away from the reality of patriotism? There is a call for patriotism, patriots must arise from the church and fight to liberate this nation from the tight fist of crooked and cony men. The church must understand that by birth we are all patriots as citizens first before we became Christians – members of the church. If not cowardice that is ravaging the church, despite her strong followership and economic growths that have continue to spread in leaps and bounds has no direct
influence on our politics, lawmakers, and political leaders.

How in God’s name will the church established and fund big charity organizations to help the poor in Nigeria yet the church will do nothing politically to make sure these poor and defenseless citizens do not remain in their perpetual state of hopelessness. This is how our great nation failed. Nigeria is not a fail nation today only because of our bad and senseless political leaders but our church leaders contributed much to this failure. A church that has no firm, stable and united political front. The Pentecostals, Methodists, Catholics, and Baptists all have divergent political views and support bases. The most astonishing and surprising is for the church to continue to support sinners, men and women
whose intentions towards the political power they crave is for nothing but disaster and to fill their coffers.

On several occasions where pastors vie for political positions in Nigeria, the first enemy to kick against such a move is the church. Now you see why we are where we are as a nation. A cowardice church where the interest of Christ is allegedly poised by our church leaders to overshadow the interest of the nation. A coward church that sees politics as works of the flesh, the carnality of ambition, the psychology
of spirituality that only resides within the walls of the church, and that a Christian that wants to go into politics has to dine or about to dine with the devil. Ah! Is it not great and same time shameful that these men and women who have dinned with the devil in the name of politics just to secure political power make laws for the church which in turn directly or indirectly controls the church. Does this not go against the scripture that light is superior to darkness? How come the church which is the light is seated, controlled, maneuvered, manipulated against time and strategy, against the love of God and the love of nation by these supposedly evil men in politics. This is ignorance that is fed by cowardice that men in
dark places now make the laws through which the existence and establishments of the church rely on. Same men of the dark world now want to even collect tax from the church – the light of the world. What an iron!

Conclusively, the church of Christ in Nigeria must directly be involved in politics. Pastors, Apostles, prophets, and Bishops must be elected into political office. Just imagine if out of the 36 states in Nigeria 20 is governed by pastors or prophets as governors of these states. In retrospect, you will see the political dynamics if 70% of our Senators and Representatives are pastors and Christians filled with the Holy Spirit. The salvation of our great country does not reside on the intellectuals, men of discipline, and
career-oriented individuals or big corporate bodies but lies within the church. Until our pastors, Apostles, Bishops, and Prophets directly be involved in politics, elected to political positions, this nation will continue to remain a failed nation. Nigeria needs men and women of strong ethical principles to build the fallen walls of our great nation and you can only find these men in the church. Men are covered with the dust of fear and the pretense that every man must dine with the devil to attain any meaningful political position in this country. These and many more are the spurious lies
postulated by Christian bigots who are more of religiousness than practicing real Christianity. They are many ways the church can directly be involved in politics and elected into political office.

Where is the courage of the church like that of Elijah who not only confronted king Ahab but also acted politics and see the redemption of the land? Nigeria pastors must not only stop at criticizing governments and politicians on the altar but they must get involved in real politics and save the soul of our great
    nation, Nigeria.

What I dislike about Oshiomhole – Obaseki

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki on Saturday reunited with his predecessor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole in Auchi, Etsako-West Local Government Area of the state.

The governor however disclosed that he has no personal grudges against the former national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) but only dislikes his style of politics.

Obaseki said this while interacting with journalists at the Centenary Birthday Thanksgiving of Msgr. Thomas Oleghe and 18th Canonical Erection Anniversary of the Diocese of Auchi held at Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Auchi.

Obaseki, who exchanged greetings with an elbow-bump in compliance with COVID-19 preventive protocols, with his predecessor, said they are both sons of Edo with the interest of the state at heart.

The governor said: “I don’t have anything personal against Oshiomhole. I may not like his politics, but he has not done anything personal against me. We all are interacting with the interest of the country and the development of our community at heart.”

  • Black Cross Part 1 – A Failed Church, A Failed Nation, By Anthony Eferhirhie Abugu

Black Cross Part 1 – A Failed Church, A Failed Nation, By Anthony Eferhirhie Abugu

It’s no more a new thing to everyone that Nigeria is now a failed nation and this failure must not be attributed to our well-established brainless, indiscipline, godless, ethnicitybias, religious bigots, and social rascals as our leaders. No, our political leaders have not failed us. Yes, they are just mere men born out of the whims and caprice of ‘men and moments’ rather say the available men of the times. Men and women who made themselves available in the realms of power while the Church of Christ in Nigeria continues to wallow in the spirit realms of holiness without righteousness and been heavenly conscious and earthly useless.

No, our political leaders did not fail us rather the church of Christ in Nigeria does. The leaders – Pastors, Bishops, Prophets and all spiritual leaders of the church failed the common man in the streets of Nigeria, killed the love of nationhood-patriotism in the
hearts of our children, betrayed the trust of our youths, wastes the reformed and revolutionary ideas of our intellectuals and our youths’ energy misplaced in the name of working for God – Gods work.

The norm has always been the church continues to pray for our political leaders, pray for peace in Nigeria. Pray, pray the pastors will say, pray for the peace of Nigeria for there lies the peace of the church and our society. In the first place, what happens to the peace of Nigeria? Was it stolen and the thieves could not be caught or the peace of Nigeria has been captured with no ransom demanded? Is the peace of Nigeria dead? But now you will say, the peace of Nigeria is threatened if that is true, by who? Who allows these elements of blood and scattered flesh as masters of political zombies to threatened our sacred peace as a great nation? While will the church of Christ in Nigeria continue to pray while men of bad blood continue to play games with the peace of our country?
Pray they say but for how long? How long will these prayers continue? how many deaths, terrors, and horrors can these prayers stopped?

The last time I checked, the more the church of Christ in Nigeria is praying for peace in Nigeria the more deaths, the more blood in the land, the more anarchy, divisions, and the sounds of war. Is the prayer of the church useless? You should judge by yourself.

Have these prayers changed the dirt, corruption mentality, and darkness that had loomed and swallowed our politicians since independence?

Let’s not forget that the church of Christ in Nigeria was praying when former President Obasanjo accepted and allowed Sharia Law to be prevalent in the northern part of the country against the 1996 constitution that governs everyone, regions, and tribes of the
    country.

Where was the prayer of the church when Boko Haram started dancing their terror dance as a child play and sees how it has grown to become a national threat to our sovereignty as a nation?

The church was praying when former president Jonathan lost to the great and current president Muhammadu Buhari when we all knew what he stands for, his extreme religious ideologies when properly decipher from his person, training, and political career as
former military head of state from 1981-1984.

Where was the prayer of the church when his vice president – Osinbajo was used to divide the votes of the church in the greatest
electoral process of Nigeria’s democratic history of 2015.

The church is still praying while Fulani jihadist and herdsmen infiltrated our military, encroached into our farms’ lands from the north to the west, south to the east. Still in her knees praying the Fulani invasion continues to grow deeper and wider. The church
continues to pray and kidnappers continue to be kidnapped even including pastors been kidnapped and paid ransoms and goes back to prayer. All for a prayer of peace for Nigeria, pray and pray for the peace of Nigeria, yet what we have seen is the pieces
of a people disintegrated, degraded, killed with blood bleeding from all corners with bones shattered across every space of the country.

Why must the church continue in these religious fallacies cajoling the grace of God to be stupid and rendering the potency of faith as a wishy-washy phenomenon without any proof as stated in the books of James chapter two verses twenty “faith without work is
dead”. Prayer without work is death. While the church continues to pray millions of Nigerians are kidnapped daily and killed in the hands of terror and you are saying our Christian leaders should not be blamed? They are the real killers, terrors of horrors who beguile their congregants with hypocrisies of prayer without faith and faith without work thus the shedding of the blood of both the guilty and innocents Nigerians daily.

A country not at war but at war with itself and the church continues to play ‘peace war’ while there is a real war out there.

This is not a question of God still hears and answers prayers of the church. No! God hears and answers prayer yet God is not an irresponsible God. The church of Christ has become an irresponsible spiritual entity where God must build our nation for us. Where God must use our darkened-hearted politicians to walk in the light to build a great country. How does God change darkness to light? How? How will God change our wicked and
brainless politicians to righteous men overnight if the church is not swimming in the rivers of delusions and religious ‘Omni-nonsense’?

How will the church continue to pray for peace and won’t do anything? Every true lasting peace comes with a price. Every great nation today becomes great because the citizens of these nations pay the price of peace. The church must free herself from the
illusions of heavenly citizenship mentality and not citizens of the earth – Nigeria.

If the church continues to toll this path, blood will continue to flow in our lands from the north to the west to the south and down to the east and nothing will happen.

The church of Christ is the only hope for peace, stability, progressive growth, and the building of Nigeria to become a great country and the church will not do this by prayers alone. Praying alone will continue to make the church a political prey for political
predators to manipulate any time any day. If the church of Christ in Nigeria limits herself to prayers alone, then the thought pattern that these killings are restricted to the villages is a joke because it won’t be long when our cities that housed the big churches are
captured and becomes citadels of terrors and horrors and when this happens the church of Christ in Nigeria will suffer most.

Conclusively, our Christian leaders, real Christians must all wake up and take responsibility – political responsibility. If the church continues to remain the dancing winds of prayers and pray alone then it should know that for every Nigerian killed in any form and part of the country the church is socially, morally, politically, physically, and spiritually responsible. The church has failed Christ thus failed our great nation, Nigeria.
