  • Stop complaining; pray for us instead – Osinbajo urges Christians

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, on Tuesday, called on Churches for religious tolerance and prayers for those in government to overcome numerous challenges facing the nation.

Osinbajo, who made the remark at the inauguration of the Deeper Life Bible Church new Headquarters Auditorium, Gbagada, Lagos, said that governance was a spiritual warfare.

It is the duty of the Church, as we are, that the Church prays for the government; that the Church upholds the hands of those in government, not by complaining but by supporting us with prayers.

Governance is a spiritual warfare, if anyone does not know that, I know. I ask the Church to pray for everyone of us in the position of authority in this land,” Mr Osinbajo pleaded.

On the edifice, Osinbajo said: “This is one of the proudest moments for me as a Christian. This great edifice is for the propagation of the gospel of Jesus Christ.”

Osinbajo, who commended the edifice for its modern amenities and technology, said its surroundings were investments in the community with a connecting bridge, street lights and greatly improved access roads.

The vice president commended the Pastor William Kumuyi, the General Superintendent of the Deeper Life Bible Church, for his uncommon humility and commitment to the spread of the undiluted gospel of Jesus Christ.

He urged the Church to accept that there would be resistance, saying “the devil is even more desperate and grievous as the end draws nearer”.

According to him, part of the resistance includes resistance to the building of churches, saying there are cases of this, which President Muhammadu Buhari, has saddled him with.

The devil’s biggest agenda is stoke up a religious conflict in Nigeria, one that would make it impossible for anyone to preach the gospel while the security agencies continue to work relentlessly to wipe out the perpetrators of these evil acts.

And to bring a permanent end to all of the killings going on in the name of herdsmen, Boko Haram or any other name, we as a body of Christ must not lose focus.

We are called to bring men and women to salvation, even those who kill.

The enemy wants us to stand on our pulpits and preach hate but we will obey the Lord Jesus Christ, who said we must love our enemy and pray even for those who persecute us.

There is no person born or yet to be born that can stop the gospel of Jesus Christ,” he added.

He decried killings of clerics and bombings of Mosques and Churches, saying it was the highest level of wickedness.

According to him, the right to freedom of worship is also a right to build places of worship.

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State, who described the project as spectacular achievement, commended the Church for the multi-level car park and bridge constructed in the community.

Ambode, who was represented by Lola Akande, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, said the edifice had impacted positively on the aesthetics of the state as a mega city.

Let me reassure everyone of our commitment to ensure harmonious relationship among all residents in the state.

We will continue to uphold and respect the rights of every citizen to freedom of worship and ensure that other people’s rights are not infringed upon,” Mr Ambode said.

Mike Okonkwo, the presiding bishop of the Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM) said that ultra-modern facility was a prophecy being fulfilled, that “Nigeria would be great again”.

Okonkwo prayed for the nation to overcome the challenges facing it, saying unless God helped the country, there was nothing anyone could do.

We shall see the Nigeria of our dream, our children will no longer die in the desert. Nigeria shall be great again,” the cleric said.

He urged Christians to continue to pray for the nation and politicians across all levels of governance to end the socio-economic and security challenges facing the nation.

Earlier in his address, Kumuyi, who said that the vision commenced in 2005, thanked God for seeing the Church through the project.

We thank God for His uncommon faithfulness for seeing us through this great endeavour. When the project began in 2005, we knew that we were taking a leap of faith.

For us, we trusted the Lord that he would not only provide all we needed but direct and steer the project to a successful completion,” he said.

Kumuyi, who said the edifice was due to many sacrifices of the Church members within and outside the country, prayed God to continue to reward and bless His people.

The cleric, who also commended the Lagos State Government and residents of Gbagada for support, said that the Church was not unmindful of its social responsibilities to the community.

The Church also unveiled its new logo at the event attended by several dignitaries across all walks of life and Church members.

Renowned clerics and women leaders from Nigeria, Africa, Europe and the U.S. were in attendance to grace the occasion and commended the vision of Mr Kumuyi.

The participants were thrilled by renditions from the Church’s children, youth, campus and adult choir with musical instrument.

The ultra-modern auditorium, with about 30,000-seat capacity, has a big main bowl and four galleries with state-of-the-art gadgets.

  • 2019: ‘Churches now aware there is religion in politics – Demola Olarewaju

2019: ‘Churches now aware there is religion in politics – Demola Olarewaju

    By Demola Olanrewaju

“In the build-up to the 2015 elections, many clerics in parts of the country openly asked their followers to vote against the PDP as it’s candidate was an “infidel”.

Churches have now woken up to the reality of religion in politics and demanding their members get PVCs and vote.

Maybe this is something that can be tapped into to stir voters out of electoral apathy.

Whatever it is, people now realise that there is religion in politics, ethnicity in politics, even gender issues in politics – and yes, they are all real and valid issues.

I’ve seen people (political neophytes mostly) say “these and these tactics” were what got GEJ voted out of power and since PDP can’t replicate it, no hope.

But I remind myself of a lesson I learnt in one joint like that:

There is always more than one way to kill a catfish.

  • Patriarchs, Heads of Jerusalem churches pen President Trump last-minute plea

13 Patriarchs and Heads of the main churches in Jerusalem has on Wednesday delivered to U.S. President Donald Trump a last-minute plea, urging him not to change US policy toward Jerusalem for fear this could cause “irreparable harm”.

“We have been following, with concern, the reports about the possibility of changing how the United States understands and deals with the status of Jerusalem,” a letter from them Wednesday said.

“We are certain that such steps will yield increased hatred, conflict, violence and suffering in Jerusalem and the Holy Land, moving us farther from the goal of unity and deeper toward destructive division.

“We ask from you, Mr President, to help us all walk towards more love and a definitive peace, which cannot be reached without Jerusalem being for all,” the letter further stated.

Oyo govt seals three churches for noise pollution

…plans to seal more churches, mosques in the coming week

…I was harassed by a pastor while sealing one of the churches – Commissioner

The Oyo State Government over the weekend said it sealed three churches in the state for violating environmental laws government’s prescribed noise level.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Chief Isaac Ishola, who supervised the sealing of the churches said he was harassed by the General Overseer of a new generation church while attempting to seal off the church for violating environmental laws.

The commissioner said the General Overseer allegedly molested, harassed and insulted him on the church premises to prevent the sealing of the church.

He noted that the ministry would no longer tolerate what he called the impunity among religious bodies that were fond of exceeding the prescribed noise level.

Ishola said: “…I was insulted and harassed (at the weekend) by a pastor, the owner of one of the sealed churches. He refused to comply with the state noise regulations. The pastor refused to attend a meeting when called. In fact, the pastor came out, pounced on me and said I could not seal the church because if I did, it would close my destiny. And I told him that I am a Christian too, but ‘you cannot use Christianity to disturb the peace’ of others…”

The commissioner urged religious bodies to remove speakers mounted on their buildings, saying doing so violated government’s laws regulating noise in the environment.

According to him, anybody who refuses to comply will be arrested and the premises sealed, in line with the laws regulating noise in the state.

  • Churches take bribe, encourage corruption – Obasanjo

Churches take bribe, encourage corruption – Obasanjo

Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, has said that churches in Nigeria are abetting corruption by accepting gifts and other material things without concerning the source from the donors.

Obasanjo stated this on Saturday, while speaking at the convention of Victory Life Bible Church International in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

He was represented at the event by Femi Olajide, who is the chapel of Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library’s Christ the Glorious King Church.

“There is no doubt that all our institutions have been tarnished by the brush of corruption.

“If the Church, as an institution, does not take bribe or get involved in other corrupt practice, the behaviour of some of our men of God leaves much to be desired.

“They not only celebrate but venerate those whose sources of wealth are questionable. They accept gifts (offering) from just anybody without asking questions. This gives the impression that anything is acceptable in the house of God.

“But if Jesus can chase out those buying and selling from the temple with the declaration that, ‘My house shall be called the house of prayer, but ye have made it a den of thieves,’ then it is time to stand up against corruption,” Obasanjo said.

He also urged churches to preach prosperity messages with caution and moderation.

“Our present day ‘money changers’ and ‘merchants’ must be chased out of the Church and put to shame in the larger society.

“While miracles, signs and wonders are the expectations of true believers, such must be based on righteousness. To preach that one can acquire wealth without labour is not only deceitful; it is a call to corruption. It is false preaching and it is sinful.

“We must be careful in believing and celebrating every testimony of miraculous blessing, hence we end up being hoodwinked into celebrating corruption,” Obasanjo added.
