2023: Guard against hate speech, violent campaigns, Cleric urges Nigerians

Bishop John Ayah, the Chairman of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria Committee on Laity Affairs, has called on Catholics to participate actively in the 2023 general elections.

Ayah, who made the appeal at the 8th Biennial National Convention of the Catholic Social Forum of Nigeria in Abuja, said this was neccessary to ensure the emergence of credible leaders in the country.

The convension was organized by the Catholic Laity Council of  Nigeria with the theme, ”The lay faithful in Nigeria democratic experience: the journey so far”.

Ayah who is also the Catholic Bishop of Uyo Diocese, said Christians and all Nigerians should be civil in conduct as campaigns for the 2023 general elections commenced.

He added that Nigerians, including politicians, must guard against violence and hate speech during the campaigns.

The cleric who was optimistic on the success of the forthcoming polls, said that Nigerians were determined more than ever to vote candidates of their choice.

“I don’t see voter apathy this season, for what I see compared to the previous years, I anticipate a lot more people.

“I pray that people don’t go violent to discourage those that want to vote, I trust there is going to be civility and people won’t distort the process,” he added.

He advised Catholics to be steadfast in prayers for the church, family and country.

Similarly, Rev. Fr.  Gerald Njoku of the Catholic Archdiocese of Owerri called on Catholics in Nigeria to be properly involved in politics, so as to ensure good governance.

Njoku said in his paper, “Politics: Political Participation and the need for good governance,” said that the electoral process must be allowed to work.

He advised election observers to do their jobs thoroughly so as to provide constructive criticism and suggestions on the electoral process.

The cleric advised voters to elect credible leaders and reject vote buying and selling.

“INEC, can really get it right, if it wants through adhering strictly to the provisions of Electoral Act as amended; recruiting well informed experienced and digital savvy staff.

“It should not in any way compromise, but rather remain an unbiased umpire, ensure prudence, before, during and after the elections.

“We shall be putting INEC’s conscience to test in the application of electronic application through BVAS machine,” he added.

According to him, the task on INEC is to deliver free, fair and credible elections in 2023.

Newsmen reports that the convention attracted politicians and candidates who pledged to ensure that the 2023 elections were free and fair, devoid of violence.

It was also attended by traditional leaders, and stakeholders in private and public sectors, as well as the academia.

  • How cleric allegedly defrauded 88-year-woman N36.5m

How cleric allegedly defrauded 88-year-woman N36.5m

An Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) investigator, Mr Samuel Adelana, on Friday told an Ikeja Special Offences Court how a cleric, Ayodeji Olorunfemi, allegedly defrauded an octogenarian of N36.5 million.

Olorunfemi is standing trial on a three-count charge bordering on obtaining money under false pretences and stealing.

Adelana, a police officer with EFCC, was led in evidence by counsel to the commission, Mr Ahmed Yerima.

He said that his team received a petition signed by one Mr Adedayo Olayide on behalf of the complainant, Mrs Tawakalitu Ilumooka, against the defendant, sometime in 2018.

The investigative officer said that his team began investigation by writing letters to different banks mentioned in the petition.

“We received a call from one of the banks that one Kayode Isola has been apprehended in the bank.

“A team member went for the arrest and they said Kayode was brought to our office.

“He was shown where his name was mentioned in the petition and told that N30,000 was paid into his account by the complainant.

“Kayode told us that he owned the account but his boss (the defendant) asked for the account details, add that as soon as money was paid into the account, he withdrew it and gave it to his boss,” he said.

The witness testified that Kayode led the EFCC team to the defendant’s house and the defendant was taken to an EFCC office where he made a statement in the presence of his legal counsel.

“The defendant explained that he knew the complainant through her daughter, Kuburat, who was his friend but had travelled out.

“He says he is a prophet and had been praying for the complainant’s daughter before she relocated and that she prayed for the complainant when she found it difficult to sell a land.

“He said that the complainant also paid N200,000 to his account to show gratitude after the land was sold,’’ he testified.

The witness added that the defendant told the team that the complainant called him to pray for her first son who was sick but he introduced her to some people who could handle the situation in Ondo Town.

“He said that he gave the complainant the people’s names as Awoyemi Fakunle and Mose Alade,”

The witness said that the complainant was received by Fakunle on arrival at Ondo and was taken to a shrine where she was told that all her problems would be solved.

He added that the duo promised to make the complainant wealthy.

The witness said he led the five-man team to Ondo after the defendant had written a statement.

He told the court that EFCC wrote a letter to that effect to the Commissioner of Police, Ondo State Command.

“Upon our arrival at area commander’s office, we did necessary documentation and we were given two policemen to assist us.

“The defendant took us to the shrine but we did not meet anyone in the old mud building.
I took pictures of the shine.

“The defendant also took us to some of the addresses we found on Fakunle’s bank details, but we were told they were no longer living there,” he testified.

The witness told the court that investigations revealed that the complainant’s nude pictures were taken at the shrine without her knowledge as she was bathing with the soap they gave her.

He said that the complainant was surrounded by 20 men chanting incantation and she was given an iron box to keep at a corner of her room in Lagos.

“She said that, during the period, two accounts were given to her in Fakunle and Alade’s names and she paid in trenches, a total of N36 million into the two accounts.

“In the course of our investigation, we discovered that Fakunle transferred N1 million to the defendant’s FCMB account on Aug. 3, 2016, and another N850,000 was paid into his account on Sept. 2, 2016.

“This money was transferred immediately after the complainant paid into Fakunle’s account.

“We confronted the defendant on this revelation and he told us that he sold a car to Fakunle in the sum of N2.3 million that he was able to pay N1.8 out of it.

“We asked the defendant to show us the evidence of purchase of the car to Fakunle which he could not give,” he said.

The witness further said that the EFCC team was able to recover N1.5 million draft from the defendant.

EFCC alleges that the defendant with six others at large fraudulently obtained N36 million from the octogenarian

The alleged offences contravene Section 1(1)(a) and 1(3) of the Advanced Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences, 2006, and Sections 287 (1) (2) and 285 (1) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2011.

Justice Mojisola Dada adjourned the case until Nov.25 for the continuation of trial.

  • Jonathan, Tinubu, clergy eulogise Bishop Kukah at 70

Jonathan, Tinubu, clergy eulogise Bishop Kukah at 70

Statesmen, including former President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday in Abuja eulogised Bishop Matthew Kukah, Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, as a man of peace, striving for a better Nigeria.

The leaders spoke at a dinner to celebrate Kukah’s 70th birthday anniversary.

In his remarks, Jonathan described Kukah as a priest, who craved for peace and oneness of Nigeria; who would go to any length to ensure unity and justice.

He noted that no matter the level of his friendship with leaders, Kukah “bashed’’ them when he felt they were not doing the right thing.

According to him, it is not surprising that the theme of the conversation is focusing on what the organisers identified as “Nigeria’s unfinished greatness: Next steps’’.

    “Nigeria is indeed a work-in-progress.

“Until that work is done people like Bishop Kukah who God has positioned as the conscience of the nation will continue to be around to constantly hold the mirror of our progression to our national face.

“In the course of the last few years since I left government, I have been involved in the work of promoting democracy, credible elections and peaceful transitions across Africa.

“This is the focus of my Foundation, the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation,’’ he said.

The former president said that from his travels and interactions, he found that experiences and struggles for development were similar in many parts of Africa.

According to him, Nigeria may not be where everyone wants it to be, but everyone should not give up or lose hope by focusing on only the negatives.

“Judging from where we are coming from since independence in 1960, we may have been moving slowly in our journey of nationhood, but it is a journey of progress, all the same.

“Our greatness is still work-in-progress because we have not been able to adequately deploy the enviable human and natural resources that God gave us, to full advantage.

“It is a task we will continue to work on and improve upon,’’ he said.

Jonathan noted that many people, especially youths were becoming increasingly disillusioned about the nation’s politics and its democracy.

“We must remain on the democratic path, however, because it is the only practical way of effectively managing our diversity, developing sustainably and recording progress as a nation.

“The task before all of us is not to lower our guard, lest the democracy we cherish today succumbs to threats and recedes into fascism tomorrow.

“Towards this goal, we are again faced with a good opportunity of choosing our leaders as the nation prepares to go to the polls next year.

“Let us choose those that will take us to the desired destination and the promise land,’’ he stressed.

The former president expressed joy that Nigerian youths are participating actively in the politics of 2023.

He noted that according to the latest figures from INEC, youths constitute the majority of the 96.2 million registered voters.

“That is a good sign. My charge to all youths that have registered ahead of the 2023 elections is to endeavour to walk their talk by making sure they come out to vote on Election Day.

“They should, by all means resist the machinations of unscrupulous politicians who would wish to exploit them by luring them to commit acts of violence or disrupt the process of free and fair elections.

“Our recent experience with the heightened youth interest in politics shows how desirous they are of participating directly in the governance process.

“They now know better not to lend their youthful energy to unpatriotic acts during elections,’’ Jonathan said.

He added that patriotic citizens must contribute through great intellection to guide those running the affairs of state without making their intervention look so adversarial and confrontational.

“A country grows on the hope and fervent aspirations of the citizens.

“We have a country to build and one of the key instruments is to focus on democracy and how to make it thrive and deliver on equity, justice and sustainable development,’’ he stressed.

Jonathan added that Nigerians must stop focusing on negatives, but consider Nigeria as a growing and developing country, which would get things right soon.

He commended Bishop Kukah for winning souls and for always being conscious of the society.

He advised the bishop to ensure that the Kukah Centre worked with governments on national issues, rather than being confrontational.

In another submission, Sokoto State’s Gov. Aminu Tambuwal described Kukah as a man with undying love for the country who believes in the possibility of a new Nigeria, where justice and equity reign.

The governor, who chaired the occasion said, though Kukah’s criticism of the country’s governance had been controversial, it would push Nigeria to come out of failed political leadership.

Tambuwal was represented by former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Emeka Ihedioha.

The Chairman, Nigerian Governors’ Forum, Ekiti State’s Gov. Kayode Fayemi, noted in his remarks that the bishop loves to ruffle the feathers of political leaders to steer the country away from the precipice.

According to Fayemi, no past leader has escaped Kukah’s messages, which were not based on hate or rivalry, but suggested to solve lingering issues.

In his comments, presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, described Kukah as a great man with a great mind, who loves Nigeria overwhelmingly and never gave up on the country.

Tinubu commended the bishop for his contributions to all sectors of the Nigerian economy which had helped to reshape the nation.

The APC presidential candidate urged Nigerians to emulate Kukah’s legacies of service to humanity, which is the core mandate of human existence.

Tinubu pledged to contribute to the realisation of the Kukah Centre.

In another submission, Monsignor Antonio Guido-Filipazzi, Apostolic Nuncio of Nigeria commended Bishop Kukah for his great works and enjoined him to remain a good priest and servant of God.

The Archbishop of Abuja Dioceses, Ignatius Kaigama, who spoke on behalf of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of Nigeria, said the Conference is proud of Bishop Kukah.

Kaigama said Kukah is a mentor, leader and an asset to the Church and to the nation.

Responding, Kukah thanked God for bringing him this far and promised unending support for the growth of the Church and the country.

He observed that no problem was new under the sun and that Nigeria only needed to equip the people to subdue its challenges.

He said that the Kukah Centre would focus on the development of the youth to enable them to contribute positively to the country.

The bishop thanked all Nigerians for their support calling for more prayers for him and for the country.

The event was attended by religious, traditional and political leaders from all walks of life.

Highlight of the celebration was the presentation of cheques and other prizes to some young innovators.

Kukah was born on Aug. 31, 1952 in Anchuna, Ikulu Chiefdom in Zangon Kataf Local Government Area of Kaduna State to Pa Vincent and Mama Hauwa Kukah.

The dinner was organised by Kukah Centre and Greysoft Technologies to raise funds for the building and equipping of the permanent site of the Kukah centre.

It had “Celebrating Nigeria’s greatness: Next Step’’ as its theme.

My wife’s adulterous lifestyle is upsetting me – Cleric

A cleric, Alhaji Lukman Shittu, prayed a Grade A Customary Court sitting in Mapo, Ibadan, to grant him divorce because his wife’s adulterous lifestyle was upsetting him.

Shittu, who has been married to Fisayo for 20 years,, said he no longer loves his wife.

‘My wife started driving a car soon after she moved out of our home. She told lies that her relative gave her the car but my investigations revealed that the same man who had all along been sleeping with her bought her the car.

“My lord, Fisayo started misbehaving when things became difficult for me and I was unable to give her money to rent a shop.

“She started coming home late. She decided to take the three children from my house. And changed the school of the last child without my knowledge and the other two have vowed not to recognise me as their father anymore.

“During the last Ramadan, I invited the second one to live with me, but he turned down my offer.

”Mr Lord, do you believe that Fisayo’s lover worships in the same mosque where I am cleric?,” Shittu lamented.

Earlier, Fisayo, the petitioner who lived at Odo ona Ewe area of Ibadan contended that her husband was irresponsible and threatens her.

“Shittu deceived me into getting a loan from a micro-finance bank under the agreement that I will use it to establish my business.

“Unknowingly, I was facilitating his adulterous intentions. Shittu frequently brings difference types of women into our matrimonial home.

“In addition, Shittu demolished the shop which I furnished with my money in order to deny me any means of sustenance.

Delivering judgment, the President of the Court, Mrs S.M. Akintayo pronounced the marriage dissolved citing lack of love for the dissolution.

Akintayo held that there was no point keeping Shittu and Fisayo together since both have agreed to part ways.

“In the interest of peace, the customary marriage between Shittu and fisayo ceases to be henceforth.

“Custody of the three children is granted to Fisayo. Shittu must not be denied access to his children

“He must pay a monthly feeding allowance of N30,000 for the children’s upkeep starting from July 2022,” Akintayo said.

The court’s president also granted an order restraining Shittu from harassing, intimidating and interfering with the personal life of the petitioner.

  • Bitcoin boss vs EFCC: Remain upright, confident, in discharge of your duties, Cleric charges youths

An Abuja-based cleric and General Superintendent of Renewal of Grace Ministry International, Pastor Yohanna Paul has charged Nigerian youths to remain upright and confident as a way of life in whatever vocation they choose.

Pastor Paul who dropped the wise counsel in Awka at the weekend in a lecture titled: ‘Crypto Currency, Youths and the emerging cashless world’ noted that living a sincere and confident lifestyle leaves one without any fear or apprehension in life whatsoever.

The gathering which was organised by members of The Emerging Markets Association of Nigeria(TEMAN) urged youths to get busy with their brains and hands, especially now the economy of Nigeria was comatose.

The cleric commended friends of the famous Awka-based Cryptocurrency czar, Messrs Linus Williams Odinaka Ifejika, popularly known as B-Lord for standing up for his right and engaging the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for his wrongful arrest, unnecessary detention, and falsely accusing him of engaging in unwholesome transactions and internet fraud.

Chairman of the occasion, Dr Chris Udeka praised High Chief Law Ugwunna,V. I. C Okeke Esq, K. C. UmeOkafor Esq, I. A. Maikaho Esq, K. C. Nwokoro and O. H. Hammed Esq for diligent and efficient legal representation on the matter.

He urged youths to see Cryptocurrency business/trading as a genuine line of business for interested persons, particularly now that the government and Central Bank have published the official enabling guidelines.

B-Lord had consequent upon his wrongful, unwarranted arrest, embarrassing parading before the world, and seizure of some of his exotic choice cars on August 31,2020 on mere trumped-up charge of internet fraud floored the Commission at the Federal High Court, Enugu Division.

Celebrating his legal triumph in the social media, Blord had declared, “I finally defeated and deflated @officialefcc in Federal High Court. My cars and properties have been released to me. Never believed at my age I will be fighting the Federal Government but I have to fight for what is mine. This is proof that the Nigerian justice system works.”

Our investigation revealed that many individuals and corporate citizens sleep on their rights, hence organs of the government often get away with actionable illegalities. A Calabar, Cross River State based bitcoin trader-Henry Umoren admitted that he was among the lot stakeholders who strongly doubted that anything good would come out of the litigation back in 2021.
But here we are, after about 20 months legal fireworks, B-Lord has triumphed.

It was also learnt that the victory threw the Cryptocurrency traders all over the nation into a frenzy.

So far B-Lord’s Instagram followers has recorded sudden jumped grossing over 1.8 million since the positive verdict, garnering over 90, 000 views within hours and his page flooded with expressions of joy, happiness, and felicitation.

Blord’s wife, Francisca Linus, in her post stated, “Let it be known that any act of defamation on his name will not be tolerated. The justice system still works, don’t be subdued by intimidation. Know your rights and fight for it.”

Another bitcoin trader, Jerry Omonuwa from Edo state saluted B-Lord Ifejika and the legal team for their diligence, doggedness and perseverance in the face of the usual disenchantment, loss of faith and financial inhibition that often stop most citizens from seeking legal redress in the face of obvious illegal actions and unwarranted meddlesomeness by most government agencies.

Mrs Iruka Chukwuma, an Awka housewife who claimed to have known B-Lord Ifejika for a long time said she knew from the onset that the EFCC operatives we’re chasing the wind. That bitcoin business was in its infancy and many people were oblivious of its operation, hence see the operators as “dubious”, “internet fraudsters”, and or an extension of “yahoo yahoo”.

Unfortunately it was a smart internet oriented very lucrative virtual business, especially for its earliest entrants.

Mrs Chukwuma, while giving kudos to the Federal High Court, for its incisive and erudite verdict commended the legal team of High Chief Law Ugwunna Chambers for their efforts and successful prosecution.

The Anambra- based Bitcoin Lord, popularly known as B-Lord beaming with hearty smiles said he was happy the court has clearly shown there’s still hope for the common man in the country.

He sent special thanks to Barrister K. C. Umeokafor specially, and the rest prosecuting legal team who worked round the clock to get justice for him even in the face of obvious opposition and challenges. “It’s God Almighty that would reward them abundantly…”, he prayed.

Court remands prophet for allegedly raping 13-year-old girl seeking prayer

A prophet, Godson Thompson, 32, has been remanded in the Uyo Custodial Centre, by a High Court in the state, for allegedly raping a 13-year-old girl, who was brought to him for prayers.

Justice Nkanang ordered the remand of the cleric, a native of Ikot Offiong Nsit in the Nsit Ibom Local Government Area, after he heard the evidence of the victim, a student of a government secondary school in Uyo.

The victim told the court that while living with her elder sister in Uyo, her in-law took her to a church at the Information Drive, Uyo, and when he left around 6pm, the pastor took her to his house, where she was raped overnight.

She said the accused person, a father of three children, gave her a bucket to urinate inside the house in order to prevent her from going outside.

The victim said, “My in-law took me to a church by IBB Way, Uyo, by 6pm, saying he will pick me up by 7pm. When my in-law left the church, the accused person made a phone call to a tricyclist and the tricyclist came in.

The accused person asked me to enter the tricycle, saying he was going to pray for two persons and that he would also pray for me.

“When we got there, he prayed for the first and second persons. Thereafter, the accused person and I trekked to the main road and he stopped a tricycle.

We both entered it and at a certain point, the tricyclist stopped and the accused person said I should wait for him.”

She stated that they later ended up in the accused person’s house, where he brought out a black liquid substance in a plastic bottle and drank before raping her.

She further told the court that she started bleeding and using sanitary pads for two weeks after the incident, which occurred on Friday, July 10, 2022.

The victim informed the court that she saw ladies’ pants in different colours and pictures of women inside the house of the prophet.

The SS1 student said she escaped when the accused person forgot to lock the door of the house, adding that she ran to a church where she was rescued.

Justice Nkanang adjourned the matter till August 1, 2022, for continuation of trial.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) recalls that the alleged rape of minors by prophets is taking an increase, as one Prophet Ikechukwu Nwadike, had been accused of rape and other indecent sexual acts against an 11-year old girl.

  • Separate, don’t remain to be killed, Cleric advises couples in violent relationships

Separate, don’t remain to be killed, Cleric advises couples in violent relationships

The General Overseer of All Christians Fellowship Mission, Rev. Williams Okoye, has advised couples in constant and extreme abusive relationships to take a break from such marriages.

According to him, the law permits separation, even though the bible forbids divorce.

He made this known on Friday in Abuja in an interview with NAN.

He explained that anyone who found himself or herself in an abusive relationship should opt for separation, instead of staying there to be maimed or killed.

“Stay away from that relationship and pray and do whatever is needed to be done from both sides to make sure the situation is rectified.

“But if it is clear that the man or woman is not changing, I don’t encourage anybody to go back and stay in that relationship.

“I don’t believe that God will want you to go and die because of that,” he said.

Okoye said it was an abomination and negation of the words of God for people to beat their wives or husbands.

“The bible condemns killing and divorce but alternatively to prevent being abused to death take a break to resolve it through prayers,” he said.

Family of Lagos RCCG cleric killed by new converts demands probe

The family of Pastor Babatunde Dada, who was killed in a parish of the Redeemed Christian Church of God in FESTAC Town, Lagos State, has called for the probe of the case by the police.

TheNewsGuru recalls that two people attended the church on the Sunday before the attack.

The two youths were said to have come out during an altar call and surrendered their lives to Jesus.

The church accommodated them on its premises after they claimed to be stranded.

They had barely spent a week in the church when they stabbed the cleric to death on Thursday, December 2, 2021.

A spokesman for the family, Mr Abolarinwa Olatunbosun, in a chat with Punch said: “I discussed at length with members of the family and what everyone is saying is that they want justice to be served in the case.

“Pastor Dada was not just a cleric; he was also the accountant of the church so we want the investigation to be thorough. The police should unravel those behind the killing and their reason for killing him

“We don’t know whether his killers came from outside the church or they were members of the church; they could even be from anywhere, including the family.

“We want to know why he was killed. Maybe somebody invited the so-called converts to carry out the killing or they just came on their own to end his life.”

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Adekunle Ajisebutu, on Thursday, said the police were working on the case.

He, however, stated that he would not divulge the extent the police had gone in order not to jeopardise investigation.

“Some arrests have been made. We are making progress in the case,” he added.
