Lagos seals 6 lounges and night clubs

The Lagos State Safety Commission has said it sealed lounges and night clubs in Ikeja over the lack of compliance which is part of its 2022 Zero Accident Campaign (ZAC).

The Director General/CEO, Lagos State Safety Commission, Mr Lanre Mojola, stated in a statement in Lagos on Tuesday that ZAC is determined to ensure that all workplaces and public facilities are safe for all visitors and workers alike.

Mojola said that the action on some Bars, Lounges and Night Clubs became necessary due to their contravention of the State Government regulations despite several efforts to ensure compliance.

He slammed the failure of these establishments to obtain safety compliance certificates, and register with the safety commission through its www.lasgsafetyreg.com portal.

The Safety Commission boss said that the lack of fire extinguishers, poor hygiene and housekeeping, lack of safety signages and inadequate parking spaces had caused traffic gridlocks and other safety infractions identified by the Commission.

Mojola further reiterated that similar enforcement exercises would take place across the State as the Lagos State Safety Commission continues to discharge its duties.

He said that the commission would not relent in its efforts, especially when implementing the laws of the Commission towards a safer Lagos for all.

He implored all business entities to regularise their safety management documentation towards achieving safer public places across the State.

Obi Cubana’s club opens up on demise of customer

Popular Abuja nightclub, Hustle and Bustle owned by socialite, Obi Iyiegbu fondly referred to as Obi Cubana has broken the silence on the demise of a female client who died on their premises on November 14, 2021.

The club in a statement signed by its management and posted on its Instagram account said that contrary to news that made rounds, the young lady’s death was not caused by electrocution in the club, instead, she ‘tripped and fell’. Ever since the tragic incident, the club has been shut.

Moreso, the management of Hustle and Bustle stated that they had kept mum on the situation for two reasons which were that they were mourning with the family of the deceased and also awaiting the outcome of the police investigation.

The statement read, “We wish to thank our esteemed patrons and customers for their love and support these last couple of days. Indeed, the loss of a customer is a blow that hit us harder than we could have imagined, particularly because of the unexpected nature of her demise. We want to extend our heartfelt sympathy once more to the family of the deceased; we pray that the almighty God will continue to grant them the fortitude to bear this painful loss.

“Despite the myriad of question and assumptions out in the public, we had earnestly refrained from making any statement until this moment for two reasons; mainly because we had to join the family and friends to mourn a beautiful life that was taken too soon, and to enable the police to extensively conduct and carry out their investigations.

“It, therefore, behoves on us at this moment to inform the general public of these series of facts. On the 14th of November 2021, a dear customer whilst leaving our premises tripped and fell and this led to her painful and untimely death. Owing to this tragedy, our management reached a decision to shut down our business so as to adequately mourn the deceased, and also allow the police unfettered access to conduct their investigations.”

The club mentioned that the female clubber was playing with her friends when she tripped and fell a few metres from the car park. However, she became unconscious and died on her way to the hospital. They further claimed that the Nigeria Police have carried out an extensive investigation and thoroughly reviewed their closed-circuit television.

“On that fateful morning, the deceased after leaving the club was happily playing around with her friends, when she made a slight run, tripped and fell down a few meters to the car park and became unconscious. Sadly, she passed on, on their way to the hospital. The Nigerian Police Force has extensively carried out their investigations and thoroughly reviewed our wide and lengthy CCTV footage and we await the report of this investigation.

“We assure the public that we have employed several health and safety standards and we will continue to place safety over profit. We have also used this bitter lesson to upgrade our already decent safety procedures and we would do our utmost best to continue to serve as a leader in this sector. May God bless the soul of the departed,” the statement read.

  • Mikel quits Turkish club amid coronavirus outbreak

Mikel quits Turkish club amid coronavirus outbreak

Former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel has mutually terminated his contract with Turkish club Trabzonspor.

Trabzonspor in an official statement on Tuesday confirmed they have indeed parted ways with Mikel, but no reason was adduced for the decision.

Mikel joined the Turkish league leaders at the start of the season and played a vital role for the purple and blue, featuring in 19 games before opting to leave the club.

The 32-year-old will forfeit the rest of his wages after leaving the club in what has shocked many fans in Turkey and Nigeria.

The statement released on Tuesday by Trabzonspor reads: “The professional football player agreement between our company and John Obi Mikel on 30.06.2019 start date, 31.05.2021 has been mutually terminated. With a mutual termination agreement, the football player gave up all his forward-looking receivables”.

Though the club did not reveal why his deal was terminated, it might have to do with Mikel’s vocal stance about playing when the coronavirus has reached a pandemic state in Europe.

The former Chelsea player had last week criticised the Turkish league for allowing the league to continue despite the prevalence of the Covid-19 virus and called for it to be suspended.

Trabzonspor are currently top of the Turkish Super League with 53 points from 26 matches.

Turkey currently has 47 confirmed cases, most of which were contracted through foreign visits to the U.S., EU, or Saudi Arabia. To date, there have been no death

The virus emerged in Wuhan, China last December, and has since spread to at least 150 countries and territories. The World Health Organization declared the outbreak a pandemic.
