US pick Nigerian to coach Under-16 team

The U.S. Soccer Federation has appointed US-based Nigerian tactician, Michael Nsien, as the new head coach of the country’s U-16 Men’s youth national football team on a 3-year deal.

Nsien, with over 23 years of experience as a player and coach for clubs in the United States, becomes the first Nigerian to take the reign of the U.S. U-16 Men’s youth national team.

Nsien, born in Oklahoma of Nigerian roots, holds all the UEFA Pro Coaching licenses and is seen by his peers in the U.S. as a “trailblazer” for black coaches in a sector with very few black coaches.
I feel really good about getting this role and opportunity as a first-generation Nigerian American, it is really important to me that we show that my family name and the people of Nigeria are exposed and represented in a positive way not just in the U.S. but across the world.

  • My worst moment coaching the Nigerian team- Rohr

Former Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr, has revealed his worst moment coaching the Nigerian team, Super Eagles.

The German professional football manager said the highest governing body of football in the world, Fédération Internationale de Football Association, (FIFA) ordered the Nigerian government to pay him $377,879.46, after breaching the contract, yet it is still not done.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) recalls that Rohr dragged the NFF before FIFA on a $1m compensation claim for unfair dismissal.

Rohr pointed out that the President of the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, Amaju Pinnick, at the World Cup, said to the players in the dressing room after the match, that he is a great coach, one of the best coaches and two months later, he sacked him.

“The worst day was when we were supposed to celebrate that we had qualified for the play-offs and we were called to say that we are sacked, unfair and painful. When we came Nigeria was 67 in FIFA rankings and 13 in Africa. When I left, Nigeria was 32 in the world and fourth in Africa.” he said.

Speaking on how he felt when Nigeria exited at the group stage at the World Cup in Russia, Rohr said; “I was disappointed, but it was the youngest team of the World Cup. We all must accept this lack of experience in the last minutes of games and also, there were regrets because of the penalty, there was a clear handball for us and unfortunately, no second penalty (was given to us). After our last World Cup game against Argentina, we got many congratulations for the performances of our team, the youngest in the competition.”

The former Super Eagles coach noted that members of his staff are still waiting for the bonuses for the last game they won together.

Explaining how he felt about the Super Eagles performances at the 2021 AFCON and 2022 World Cup playoffs, Rohr maintained that, “I think we built a really good team that could have done better if we carried on with the momentum we had. I was sad for the players because they deserved better.

“We were getting the desired results and we were not sluggish. We played attacking football scoring a lot of goals and having good goals scorers all the time, you know them, (Odion) Ighalo, (Victor) Osimhen and others. We created chances in all the games, even in the ones we lost or maybe drew. The most important was to get results and also to allow young players to progress and to learn.

“Football is not a game of small or big teams; you can lose to anyone at any time. It’s a part of the game. Argentina lost to us in the friendly, Iceland lost to us in the World Cup, Brazil drew with us, and we played with a very young team, and they still had to learn. The (African) champions Cameroon lost to us in World Cup qualifiers and AFCON. There are so many examples.”

  • Borussia Dortmund name Terzic as new coach

Borussia Dortmund name Terzic as new coach

Edin Terzic returned as coach of Borussia Dortmund on Monday, a year after leaving the same job.

He will sign a deal until 2025, Borussia Dortmund said in a statement on Monday.

Terzic was installed as interim coach at Borussia Dortmund in December 2020.

But by the time he had achieved a UEFA Champions League place and a German Cup triumph that season, Borussia Dortmund had already agreed to recruit Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Marco Rose.

Terzic then moved upstairs to become technical director.

Fast forward a year and Rose has been let go after an underwhelming campaign and Terzic was the obvious and cheap choice for the Bundesliga runners-up.

The 39-year-old German-Croatian takes on a side who are losing Erling Haaland to Manchester City but have already recruited Germany trio Niklas Süle, Nico Schlotterbeck and Karim Adeyemi.

Cologne’s Salih Özcan is also arriving.

  • Waldrum: Our mission is to see Super Falcons compete creditably with the world’s best

Waldrum: Our mission is to see Super Falcons compete creditably with the world’s best

Days after leading the Super Falcons to once more earn a berth at African women football’s flagship tournament – the Women Africa Cup of Nations – American gaffer Randy Waldrum has informed thenff.com that the mission of the current technical staff of the nine-time African champions is to see the team match the world’s best teams yard-for-yard and width-for-width at the most glamorous championships.

The 65-year old, signed on by the Nigeria Football Federation in October 2020 to steer the Falcons to new levels after decades of flagrant domination on the African continent, believes the current squad has the spirit, depth and capacity to go toe-to-toe with the likes of Team USA, Germany, Japan, Norway and Brazil when the die is cast.

The Falcons have been to every single edition of the FIFA World Cup since the competition was launched in 1991, but have only survived group stage attrition on two occasions – in the USA in 1999 and in France 20 years later.

“Our initial mandate as given by the NFF was to qualify the team for the Women AFCON in Morocco. That, we have achieved. However, in the preparation and process, we also had in mind the imperative of building a squad with the strength, stamina and technical balance to give the world’s best teams a good run for their money, anyday and anywhere.

“I am happy that we have qualified for Morocco, where our first goal will be to qualify for the Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand next year summer. We will continue to work on the project, getting young players who are good enough to compete with the old guard, and pick the best team always. I like the spirit of the players and their commitment to the cause, and it is an incentive in itself to keep working hard at the project.”

Waldrum, a former American professional soccer player who has coached the USA U23 girls as well as the senior women team of Trinidad and Tobago, underscored his boldness when he handed four players their first caps in the crucial 2022 Women AFCON final qualifying round, first leg match against the Lady Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire in Abuja on 18th February. Defender Ashleigh Plumptre (who has trained with the Nigeria team since August 2021 but got FIFA go-ahead to represent Nigeria at senior level in December 2021), midfielder Amanda Mbadi and forwards Ifeoma Onumonu and Esther Okoronkwo gave good accounts of themselves on the day.

Plumptre was the heart-throb of the crowd with her strength and savvy in defence, while Onumonu, who plays for Gotham FC in New York, scooped the honours by scoring both goals that handed Nigeria the advantage in the two-leg fixture.

Okoronkwo, who plays for Saint Etienne in France, was the heroine in the return leg, hammering the nail in the coffin of the Ivorians with an 87th minute goal that sealed a 3-0 aggregate win, after goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie had saved a penalty with 11 minutes left in the first period.

Ageless and tireless stallion Francisca Ordega scored a goal that was ruled out in the opening half, and the fact that the Falcons felt strongly that they were denied a penalty of their own summed up the fact that they gave as much as they received in Abidjan. The performance ledger was of a different colour from the way they puttered and petered out against the same Ivorians in the race for a spot at the 2020 Olympic Women’s Football Tournament.

Veterans Onome Ebi and Osinachi Ohale also stood firm in defence, with Toni Payne and Rasheedat Ajibade pulling strings in midfield.

Your victory is well deserved, Buhari tells victorious Super Falcons

Talking about strength-in-depth, another veteran, Rita Chikwelu still have some fire in the middle of the pack, and Uchenna Kanu and Christy Ucheibe can add lustre at the fore on their day.

There are still options like Akudo Ogbonna, Rofiat Imuran, Oluwatosin Demehin, Nicole Payne and Christy Ogbonna in the defence, with veteran Tochukwu Oluehi able to deputise for the fabulous Chiamaka Nnadozie in goal. In the midfield, Amarachi Okoronkwo can deliver long passes and bullet shots when least expected, and Ngozi Okobi is able to provide penetrating passes that puts the strikers in good steads to deliver. Regina Otu and the Israel-based duo of Yetunde Aluko and Peace Efih are additional ammunition in midfield.

The nifty Gift Monday remains a strong force in attack, and is sure to challenge Onumonu and Okoronkwo for starting places when the team regroups sometimes in April.

The picture is of a New Nigeria squad that is able and blessed in all departments, and could achieve great things under a focused technical crew. Waldrum, recently handed a fresh two-year contract that will last till after the World Cup in Down Under, has no doubts whatsoever that his team could become one of the world’s very best soonest.

“The girls are bold, inventive and help one another out there on the pitch. It is a good picture that brings good feelings and you have the conviction that this is a team that can do great things.”

  • Why Manchester United will sack Rangnick – Merson

Why Manchester United will sack Rangnick – Merson

Manchester United interim manager, Ralf Rangnick, would be sacked if the club does not finish in the Premier League top-four position this season.

This was disclosed by Arsenal legend, Paul Merson.

It would be recalled that Rangnick came under fire in recent weeks, with Man United putting in a number of underwhelming performances – including an FA Cup defeat at Old Trafford to Middlesbrough.

One-hundred percent Rangnick won’t be in charge of Man Utd next season

The German also watched as his team failed to beat Southampton in a Premier League tie on Saturday after playing a 1-1 draw.

The result against Southampton means Man United is now in the 5th position on the Premier League table with 40 points from 24 matches.

Merson said: “One-hundred percent Rangnick won’t be in charge of Man Utd next season. I have got as much chance of being in charge. I just don’t see it.

“I read something that said they have improved. I don’t see that. I don’t see happiness there. I hear so much coming out of Man Utd, at the moment, which is just extraordinary. It never happened before and that is my worry.

“I don’t see him being there and the way it’s going at the moment, if they don’t get in the top four, I would be shocked if he went upstairs. I know that was part of the deal, but I don’t think it is a good thing. I think this needs to be nipped in the bud sooner rather than later at Manchester United.

“I would have had someone in as soon as possible. You pay £70m to £80m for football players and some of them don’t even play. Why would you not break the bank for managers if you need to get a manager out of a club? In my opinion, they are very important.”

  • Players in good spirits ahead of Arsenal clash – Norwich coach

Players in good spirits ahead of Arsenal clash – Norwich coach

Norwich City boss Dean Smith says spirits have been lifted ahead of Sunday’s clash with Arsenal.

Smith has welcomed several players back to the fold.

“I think the atmosphere a couple of days after the Aston Villa game was a little bit low because we didn’t play very well and we felt we’d thrown points away in two home games,” said the Norwich boss at his Christmas Eve press conference.

“We performed really well against Manchester United and should have got something out of it (losing 1-0) and then didn’t perform so well against Aston Villa (losing 2-0).

“But as I’ve said, on reflection and in hindsight, I can take responsibility for that because we never really were going at Villa at full tilt, with the players that we would have liked to be going at full tilt.

“But the Manchester United game, we all came out of that really buoyant and I’ve spoken to the players about that game, accepting responsibility for Villa, and the last three days there’s been a real lift in the camp again.

“We’ve got some players back from illness, some players back on the training ground, so that has certainly lifted the mood.”

  • New Super Eagles coach will resume at AFCON – Amaju Pinnick

New Super Eagles coach will resume at AFCON – Amaju Pinnick

The new Super Eagles manager to be hired by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) would most likely supervise the national team at next month’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) if a deal can be struck immediately between both parties .

This much was disclosed yesterday by NFF President Amaju Pinnick in Lagos, adding the new manager can take over from Super Eagles caretaker coach Augustine Eguavoen amid speculations that one of Jose Mourinho’s protégées, Portuguese Jose Morais, is favourite for the job.

“I can’t be categorical about who would be the new Super Eagles manager,” Pinnick said. “Of course, we have spoken to three top coaches and it included some of those names already being speculated.

“You know that Nigeria is a country where any top coach can make an immediate impact and based on that there is no top coach that

“We’ve discussed with Jose Peresiro, Jose Morais and Mladen Krstajić who has gone to Israeli club Maccabi Tel Aviv but we have our internal due process as far as head hunting a coach for the Super Eagles and we are working in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development.”

Pinnick said the choice of would-be Super Eagles manager will be hinged on the antecedent of the coach as far as discipline is concerned; his hunger for winning trophies and the person must ready to make Nigeria his home.

Pressed on the likely resumption of the new manager, Pinnick said there was no time to rigmarole hence the fellow would assume immediately.

“What else would we be waiting for when the technical committee has submitted their report?” Pinnick asked rhetorically. “Once the board approved their choice, what would the new coach be observing if we are able to sign a contract before the AFCON?

“ He is coming to work and I was so impressed when I spoke with one of the coaches last night (Tuesday) as he shared the strengths and weaknesses of all our players; so we are not going to experiment.

“ Why can’t we win the AFCON ? We have a collection of the best young players . Of course , Eguavoen can do it but we also need somebody who can do it better .

“ We also need input from the outside but in case we can’t finalise a contract , we shall build capacity around the team to Cameroon but I won’t tell you that if we had the contract signed and sealed, the new coach won’t lead the Super Eagles to AFCON,” Pinnick noted.

  • What I don’t understand about VAR – Liverpool coach

What I don’t understand about VAR – Liverpool coach

Liverpool assistant coach Pep Lijnders feels VAR needs adjusting.

Lijnders said there has not been any conversations with referees’ chief Mike Riley after Sunday’s controversies at Tottenham.

“No, because everyone saw what happened,” he said. “I think VAR is a good thing that is in football because it can help to make the big decisions right.

“Everybody makes mistakes, I make mistakes, if me and Jurgen [Klopp] make big mistakes we get punished, if players make big mistakes they get punished, but if referees make big mistakes probably or usually the teams or the players get punished as well and that’s not correct.

“I’m not talking about the small mistakes in the game because that’s football, it goes so quick, but VAR is there to help the referee and what I still don’t understand is why VAR is always a separate person, why VAR is not part of a team. They need to be a team because together they are responsible.

“I wish we had VAR to make better decisions as coaches because then I won’t make mistakes.”

  • I know I’m good enough to succeed abroad – Ajax coach

I know I’m good enough to succeed abroad – Ajax coach

Ajax coach Erik ten Hag says he isn’t desperate to work abroad.

The Dutchman is a target for Manchester United and also turned down an approach from Newcastle United.

Ten Hag said, “I think I’m ready for this.

“I would be glad to accept this challenge. But I’m not chasing this opportunity. If I still don’t work abroad, I will not say that my coaching career was not successful.

“However, I believe that I am competent enough to take this challenge.”

  • Barca coach Xavi to go back to Al Sadd

Barca coach Xavi to go back to Al Sadd

Barcelona coach Xavi wants to go back to former club Al Sadd to strengthen his attack.

Sport says he knows they need more goal threat up front and is interested in bringing Algerian forward Baghdad Bounedjah to Barça from his former side Al Sadd.

He was the top scorer there last season and this campaign has 11 goals and three assists in 705 minutes.

He’s a complete forward and an Algerian international.

With Kun Aguero’s future in the air, Martin Braithwaite and Ansu Fati injured, Barcelona are lacking up front and don’t have a lot to spend.
