    Five-storey building collapses in Ibadan

    A five-storey building still under construction has collapsed in Ibadan today, Thursday.

    The collapsed building was erected at  Awosika axis within Ibadan North Local Government Area and close to the Oyo State Government secretariat.

    The building said to be a hotel caved in the early hours of Thursday when construction work was still ongoing.

    It was gathered that about seven persons  have been rescued from the rubble of the building.

    Operatives of the State Fire Service, Federal Road Safety Commission, and other security agencies, have been deployed to the scene.

    The rescue teams are still searching for the workers who must have been trapped in the building.

    The casualty figures are still unclear as of the time of filing this report.

    About seven people died and 10 others were injured on Monday after a roof of a mosque collapsed in Khairpur District of Pakistan’s southern Sindh Province, local media reports said.

    According to the reports, the incident took place in Ahmadpur area of the district due to torrential rains.

    The reports added that over 100 people, including women and children, got trapped under the debris.

    The rescue officials said the victims were sleeping in the mosque during the tragic incident.

    The victims were the local flood-affected people who have taken refuge in the mosque since their own houses were affected by the floods.

    The officials said rescue teams reached the site and shifted the victims to a local hospital.

    Heavy rains in the area over the last four days have resulted in multiple accidents.

    No fewer than three persons collapsed on Monday during the military parade to mark the Democracy Day ceremony at Eagles Square, Abuja.

    Those who collapsed during the parade were believed to be members of the different units of the military, who had been on their feet hours before the commencement of the event.

    The colorful parade, presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari, was already in motion when a bit of commotion broke out from behind one of the parties as some security and medical personnel were seen scrambling stretchers to move those who had collapsed for urgent medical attention.

    They were rushed to the tents provided at the square for medical personnel where physicians successfully resuscitated them.

    According to reports, it was not clear whether they were able to return to their duty beats for the continuation of their duties.

    On arrival, President Muhammadu Buhari inspected the parade immediately and was followed by military/police march past in slow and quick time.

    The event also involved combat march display by the Nigerian Army Women Corps as well as the combined silent drill display by the Armed Forces and Police.

    Dignitaries in attendance were former Presiding Officers of the National Assembly, Service Chiefs, Members of the Diplomatic Corps, Youth Corps Members and former Cabinet Member under President Yar’Adua, Babagana Kingibe, President Goodluck Jonathan, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

    Many escape unhurt as another building collapses in Lagos

    A two storey building has partially collapsed in Ago Palace way, Okota area of Lagos state.

    Fortunately, most of the occupants of the two storey building escaped unhurt as they heeded to warning signs and left two hours before the building went down.

     

    TheNewGuru.com Recalls that last week a building caved in at the Ebute-Meta area of Lagos state and about 10 occupants lost their lives.

    However, the occupants of the Ago Palace way building got signs that the building might collapse hence their rushing out of the building in record time.

    The incident occurred at Chris Igadi Street in the early hours of Saturday, while emergency operations which commenced immediately, lasted till daybreak.

    The cause of the collapse hasn’t been unraveled as at when filing this report.

    The Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu who confirmed the incident.

    He, however, added that the site of the collapsed structure had been cordoned off and handed over to the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA).

    According to him, “On arrival, information gathered from the residents revealed that the building gave signs several hours before it collapsed.

    “Fortunately, nobody was trapped as all the occupants evacuated the area when the signs began two hours before the collapse.

    “A head count of occupants was carried out to ensure no occupants are missing and the remains of the building were cordoned off.

    “The operation was concluded around 5.23 am. The site will be handed over to LABSCA and Ministry of Physical Planning for further investigation.”

    Also, the incident was confirmed by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Lagos State Territorial Coordinator, Ibrahim Farinloye, who said, “the two storey building partially collapsed at about 2.am.

    “The occupants had rushed out before the collapse because the building had given signs two hours prior to when the incident really occurred. No one was injured or any casualty recorded.”

    Another building under construction has collapsed in Magbon, Badagry area of Lagos on Wednesday with four persons feared dead.

    Five others were rescued from the rubbles with varying degrees of injury, while efforts are still on to rescue others.

    This is coming on the heels of the 21-storey building that went down in Ikoyi, earlier in the month.

    Director, Lagos State Fire Service, Mrs Margret Adeseye, who confirmed the incident, said immediately the distress call was received, officials of the Lagos Fire and Rescue Service , Badary station, rushed to the scene.

    She said, “There has been a reported case of a storey building collapse at Sunny Filled, Flour Mills, Estate, Magbon, Badagry, Lagos.

    “The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Badagry Station, had rescued five victims from the building that is under construction, while concerted efforts are ongoing to rescue remaining trapped victims.

    “The victims, who are mainly construction workers, were rescued with varying degrees of injury, but in stable condition and have been taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

    “However, four adult males have been recovered unconscious thus far as the Nigerian Police, Morogbo Division and the Community dwellers are complimenting the efforts of the the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service.”

    Rescue officials have recovered 20 bodies buried under the rubble after a 21-storey building collapsed on Monday in the Ikoyi part of Lagos, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has said.

    The building, situated on Gerard Road, trapped about 50 persons under the rubble, witnesses said.

    Residents and family members of persons trapped under the collapse besieged the site on Tuesday, furious that rescue operations were slow.

    On Monday, it took over four hours for excavators and other heavy equipment to arrive at the site.

    A relative, who declined to say his name, said he has three siblings in the collapsed building. He was seen crying and urging security agents to allow him and other men to assist in the operation.

    Another relative said his elder brother, who is an engineer, is still trapped beneath the rubbles.

    “His name Engineer Efe Martins, yesterday was one month he joined them. As at 1:04 p.m on Monday, he sent a picture to us of this building that he was working there. He was downstairs having a meeting with the proprietor, the principal – owner of the property, because he sacked a guy recently and he was trying to get him back in.”

    He said his brother is 54 years old, and the first born son of their parents.

    On Tuesday, the Lagos State government deployed more equipment and manpower to the scene of the incident.

    Also on Tuesday, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu ordered the suspension of Gbolahan Oki, the general manager of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA).

    Mr Oki had, on Monday, said the collapsed building only got approval for 15 floors, and that inferior material were used in the construction.

    Obafemi Hamzat, the deputy governor, however, refuted the claim, insisting that the government gave approval for the construction of a 21-storey building.

    At least three people have been confirmed dead in a 21-storey building that collapsed Monday on Gerald Road in Ikoyi, Lagos State. An unspecified number of people remain trapped in the building, with four rescues reported at the time of writing.

    Rescue operations are ongoing, with a team comprising the military, police and related authorities cordoning off the area to keep out a rowdy crowd that had impeded the work of emergency workers and first responders.The building, which had been under construction, collapsed a few minutes past 4 pm, causing pandemonium in the area as the loud noise from the collapsed structure forced people to scamper for safety.

    Among the casualties, it has been reported, is one of Nigeria’s celebrated developers, Mr Femi Osibona, who died in the rubble.

    Osibona, the Managing Director of Four Score, was the brain behind 360 Degrees Towers in Ikoyi. He was reportedly on a visit to the site of the building when it collapsed.

    Many people were seriously injured while running for safety.

    The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has responded to the scene of the collapse and is leading rescue and recovery efforts.

    LASEMA Director Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, who confirmed the incident, said rescue operations are ongoing.

    Police from the Area A Command and Ikoyi Police Station arrived at the scene but they were overwhelmed by the large crowd which forced the police to call in reinforcements from other formations.

    South West Coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Mr Ibrahim Farinloye confirmed to reporters that rescuers from NEMA, LASEMA and medics from the State Ambulance Service (LASEMBUS) are already on the ground.

    Farinloye confirmed that three people had died in the collapse, their bodies recovered; while four others have been rescued alive and efforts are ongoing to rescue others.

    ‘Rescue operations have commenced. Four persons have been rescued and they are being treated by the medical crew of the Lagos State Emergency Ambulance Service (LASEMBUS). We are on the ground and we must finish the work today because we don’t want the repeat of what happened in Synagogue Church where it took emergency agencies eight days to finish the recovery,’ he stated.

    A witness, Emmanuel Sanda, told Daily Sun that ‘there is a strong indication that the owner of the building is among many of the construction workers trapped under the rubble. Some people said he is the owner, others said he is fronting for someone, but we know him as the owner. We saw him a few minutes before the building collapsed; so we are suspecting that he is under the place.’

    Sanda said the police had clashed with some individuals who claimed that they were journalists who came to come to cover the story and some street urchins. ‘When the clash was becoming too tense, the police had to call in the military who have cordoned off the area to ward off attacks.

    ‘In fact, when the building collapsed, we first scampered for safety because we thought it was a bomb explosion. We later came back and started calling all the emergency numbers that we had. We were lucky to get the police, who arrived and started calling emergency agencies,’ the witness narrated.

    At the time of writing, rescue operations are ongoing, with the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr Hakeem Odumosu, on the ground coordinating emergency responders. The State Fire Service is also on the ground to prevent a possible fire outbreak.

    Officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LATSMA) and police traffic section have also been deployed to the area to control traffic.

    Armed soldiers and riot police are keeping vigil and preventing non-emergency personnel and suspected hoodlums from accessing the area as rescue efforts continue into the night.

    Scores of miners feared killed as site collapses in Benue

    There’s palpable fear that miners have been killed after a mineral deposit popularly known as Tojir Mine collapsed at Duejime area, near Anyiin of Logo Local Government area of Benue State on Tuesday.

    TheNewsGuru.com, (TNG) reports that eyewitnesses in the area, indicate the accident occurred at the mine site while the victims were working in the mine.

    According to Baba Ngutor in a Telephone conversation said that three of the workers died instantly while others were seriously injured and were transferred to a hospital in Anyiin.

    It was further gathered that one of the workers who managed to escape from the scene unhurt informed locals who mobilised to rescue the victims.

    Meanwhile, Council Chairman of Logo LGA, Terseer Agber who confirmed the report however said neither he nor the state government knew anything about the mining operation in the area.

    The Logo council boss who spoke to newsmen by telephone however, confirmed three persons killed and one other injured in the mining disaster.

    But when contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Sewuase Anene said she was yet to receive any report on the accident.

    Harry Potter star, Tom Felton, was carried off a Wisconsin golf course after collapsing during a celebrity match ahead of the Ryder Cup.

    The celebrated actor, who turned 34 on Wednesday, experienced a “medical incident” and was sent to a “local hospital for treatment”, the PGA of America said.

    Photographs showed him conscious while being removed in a cart, BBC reports.

    Mr Felton is well known for playing Harry Potter’s rival Draco Malfoy in the film franchise.

    “In today’s Ryder Cup Celebrity Match, actor and musician Tom Felton experienced a medical incident on the course while participating for Europe. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment. No further details are available,” the PGA of America said in a statement on Thursday.

    A keen golfer, Mr Felton was representing Europe alongside former professional ice hockey player Teemu Selanne, from Finland, in the celebrity tournament at Whistling Straits.

    They were playing against 1980 US Olympic hockey captain Mike Eurzione and Olympic speed skater Dan Jansen.

    Samuel Kalu returned to training on Wednesday after collapsing on the pitch in Sunday’s Ligue 1 clash against Marseille which ended 2-2.

    Kalu, 23, fell to the ground in the sixth minute as Marseille’s Dimitri Payet prepared to take a free-kick amid searing temperatures at the Stade Velodrome.

    Players from both teams rushed to the Nigeria international and called for medical attention.

    He was able to get up and walk off the pitch with the help of his team-mates, holding an ice pack against his head.

    He resumed playing after getting treatment but was substituted after he appeared dazed.
    The club took to the social media to announce his return to training.

    “Samuel Kalu is back in training,” reads a tweet on Bordeaux’s handle.
