INEC stops journalists, party agents, observers from Lagos Collation Centre in Somolu

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials at Somolu Local Government Area of Lagos State have prevented journalists, party agents and observers from the collation centre.

As against the practice of collating results publicly in the interest of fairness, the returning officer of the Governorship and House of Assembly Elections, took the results from the wards to an inner office where she and some selected persons carried out the exercise.

Journalists and observers who had converged on the collation centre at the end of voting and polling units collation on Saturday were denied access to the inner office.

Those at the inner office spent long hours working on the results from the ward.

At about 4:58am on Sunday, the returning officer alongside police escorts left the INEC LGA office at Somolu with the results.

It is unclear if they were headed for the state collation center at Birrel Avenue, Yaba, as they refused to address the media.

Although party agents were not allowed in the inner office where the selective collation took place, they were later to sign and obtain duplicate sheets.

An observer, who spoke off the record for the fear of being victimised, said, “After spending the night outside at the INEC office , I was able to get result snapshot from an official whom I had met in the last presidential election. The person was invited to the inner office.”

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that Somolu is one of the LGAs that the ruling party lost to the opposition in the presidential election.

Activities will kick off at the State Collation Centre by 11am, according to an earlier announcement by the electoral commission.

  • Drama at INEC’s collation centre as Dino Melaye stages protest over non projection of states recorded results

Drama at INEC’s collation centre as Dino Melaye stages protest over non projection of states recorded results

There was mild drama on Monday at the collation centre of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Abuja, as an agent of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Dino Melaye, staged a protest over the non-projection of states’ recorded results.

Melaye, who is a former senator and was a member of the 8th Nigerian National Assembly, representing Kogi West, asked the Chairman of INEC, Yakubu Mahmood, to allow the results from the states recorded at the state collation centers be projected on one of the screens in the center so party agents present can compare with what the Resident Electoral Commissioners from each state are presenting.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that the lawmaker staged a protest at National Collation Center in Abuja this afternoon, February 27.

His request was however ignored by the chairman who opined that if there are any discrepancies in the results, party agents at the state levels should have made their objections known then.

Melaye then proposed that party agents should be made to declare that the results they are declaring are tallying with what has been uploaded on the INEC server.

When his proposal was not accepted by the INEC chairman, Melaye began to talk in a high voice, asking for the collation exercise to be suspended until the Collation officers are made to say his proposed declaration.

Melaye raised his concerns over alleged inconsistencies in the number of votes and over voting in Ekiti State.

National Collation Centre DAY 2: INEC announces presidential election results of three states

As Nigerians continue to express mixed feelings over the conduct of the presidential election that was held across the country on 25th February, 2023, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, on Monday, announced the result of the poll in Kwara, Ondo and Osun states.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, opened the floor for day 2 of the national collation around 12 noon, at the International Conference Centre in Abuja.

The electoral chief had adjourned sitting on Sunday night after the presentation of results from Ekiti State. Yakubu had adjourned to enable the state collation officers for the presidential election (SCOPs) in the other 35 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

For Kwara, Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) polled 263,572 votes followed by Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who scored 136,909 votes.

Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) polled 31,166 votes while Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) polled 3,141 votes.

In Osun, the APC polled 343,945, LP 23,283, NNPP 713 and PDP 354,366.

For Ondo, the APC polled 369,924, LP – 44,405, NNPP 930, and PDP 115,463.

Mahmood also said the collation of presidential election results will be done at four levels — first at the 8,889 wards, then at the 774 local government areas, then the SCOPs at the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory will submit the votes per candidate in Abuja.

The electoral chief said the collation centre will be open all day and all night with short breaks.

He also cautioned political parties to only draw their figures from INEC.

“I appeal to all political parties and media organisations to draw their figures only from the official results released by the commission as the only body constitutionally responsible for releasing official election figures,” Yakubu emphasised.

Elections for the office of the President, 360 House of Representatives and 109 Senatorial seats were held in the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory on Saturday and Nigerians expect the declaration of results by the electoral umpire.

Though 18 candidates are in the race, pollsters and analysts have described the contest as a four-horse race between Kwankwaso, Atiku, Tinubu and Obi.

While Obi and Tinubu are from the southern region of the country, Kwankwaso and Atiku come from the northern part of Nigeria. The four heavyweights and strong contenders have large followings with the numerical potential of emerging as the successor of President Muhammadu Buhari whose two-term tenure ends on May 29, 2023.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that elections were held at most of the 176,606 polling units in Nigeria as 87.2 million voters with Permanent Voter Cards voted for their preferred candidates.

Lagos INEC opens State Collation Centre, says no result yet from LGAs

About 24 hours after the opening of polls in Saturday’s Presidential and National Assembly elections in Lagos State, no single result from the 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) has arrived at the State Collation Centre.

Prof. Adenike Oladiji, the State Collation Officer and Vice-Chancellor, Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) disclosed this during the official opening of the centre for final collation of election results in Lagos State at about 12.00 a.m. on Sunday.

Oladiji, who described the collation as a serious assignment, said that the centre was still awaiting results from all the 20 LGAs as at midnight.

The professor said: ”This is a serious national assignment that has brought us together here.

”It is also an assignment that is of international importance, and that explains why we have international observers here with us.

”Our job is simple. If we follow the well laid out procedures of INEC, we know it is very simple and easy.

”It is a call to duty, it is a national assignment and we hope that we will not fail our country. As we can all see, the result are not here yet.

”So that we wont keep ourselves just waiting expecting the results, we are proposing that we reconvene tomorrow (Sunday) at 10.am.

”We know that by that time some of our results will be here and we will be able to process them all in this hall.”

Earlier in his opening address, Mr Olusegun Agbaje, the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Lagos State, who commended the state collation officer, said that collation was at various stages in the state.

According to Agbaje, at the end, Nigerians will be happy that INEC has done a lot to ensure that people are allowed to vote in spite of few hitches.

”We want to assure Nigerians that their votes will count,” the commissioner said.

The State Collation Centre for the 2023 Presidential Election in Lagos State is situated at INEC Media Centre at the commission’s headquarters in the state.

The Presidential and NASS elections were held simultaneously across the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory on Saturday.

Journalists, observers among other stakeholders, awaited the commencement of the collation on Sunday.

Collation of results was still at various stages, some at the registration areas, federal constituency, senatorial district and local government collation centres.

Some security agents were sighted at the centre.
