Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi is in an induced coma after having the first phase of surgery on a serious abdominal injury.

The Nigeria international, 27, collided with the post in the 88th minute of the 2-2 draw against Leicester at the City Ground on Sunday as he attempted to get on the end of a cross from Anthony Elanga.

He had surgery on Monday night and remains in hospital, with the rest of the procedure set to be completed on Wednesday.

In a statement earlier on Tuesday, Forest said Awoniyi was “recovering well” following the operation.

After the incident on Sunday, he received treatment on the pitch and was able to continue but was visibly struggling when the match restarted.

Awoniyi, who joined Forest from Union Berlin in June 2022, had only been on the pitch for five minutes, having come on as a late substitute for Ibrahim Sangare.

Owner Evangelos Marinakis took to the field after the game to express his concern to manager Nuno Espirito Santo over how Awoniyi’s injury was handled.

Marinakis is being kept updated on the forward’s condition.

On Tuesday, Forest said that Awoniyi’s injury was “a powerful reminder of the physical risks in the game and why a player’s health and wellbeing must always come first”.

Ex-France international dies after 39 years in coma

Former France defender, Jean-Pierre Adams, has died at 73 after spending 39 years in a coma.

Adams, who played for Nice and Paris Saint-Germain, had been in a vegetative state since 1982, following a routine knee operation that went wrong.

During the surgery, there was a problem with the supply of anaesthetic. Also, a cushion used to prop him up, had slipped without hospital staff noticing.

Adams suffocated and suffered a cardiac arrest.

According to his wife, Bernadette, the anaesthetist failed to spot the signs that he was lacking oxygen “because of his skin colour”.

Adams, who was born in Senegal, spent the next year in a coma in hospital before he was taken home to be cared for by Bernadette.

He was able to open his eyes and digest food, but was unable to move or talk.

Totti meets girl who woke from coma after his message

Nineteen-year-old Ilenia Matilli has been in hospital since December, after a car crash which killed her best friend.

In her gradual awakening from a coma, a video message of support from former AS Roma great Francesco Totti played a part.

“Hold on and don’t give up,” the 44-year-old former Roma captain and forward told Ilenia in a video he sent following a request from her parents.

After hearing his voice, Ilenia gave further signs of recovery and wrote on a special blackboard that she wanted to meet her idol.

Totti and Ilenia spent an hour together, the Gemelli hospital said in a statement.

Even though she used to play for the women’s team of Roma’s city rivals Lazio, Ilenia was wearing a Roma T-shirt which Totti signed with a golden marker pen.

“I want to see you out of the hospital soon and get your life back,” Totti was quoted as saying.

Doctor Luca Padua, who leads the neurorehabilitation unit, said listening to music, sounds and looking at images were an important part of Ilenia’s therapy.

“There is still a long way forward, but we are confident,” Padua said.

Former Italy international Totti spent his whole career at Roma, playing over 600 Serie A matches for the club before retiring in 2017.

  • Warri Bishop charged with rape, victim in coma for days

Warri Bishop charged with rape, victim in coma for days

Delta state police command has arrested a popular Warri cleric, Bishop Elijah, over alleged rape of a 19-year-old girl, identified as Miracle.

Miracle was said to have gone to his church, off Apalla in the heart of Warri South council area, for spiritual deliverance when the incident happened.

Briefing newsmen over the arrest, the Warri Area Commander, ACP Mohammed Muktar Garba, said the suspect who is the founder/general overseer of a popular prayer ministry was traced to where he hid and was arrested last Friday.

According to him, the suspect is currently being detained at the “A Division’” police station.

He disclosed that the arrest was effected following a complaint by the mother of the victim.

He said the mother took the daughter to the church for deliverance to avert sudden death based on revelations of the pastor who has been her spiritual father for many years.

ACP Garba said, “she said the pastor had a dream that death was hovering over their house and for peace to reign, she should bring her daughter, Miracle, for prayers (deliverance).

“The woman brought the lady to the church. I think what really happened is that the pastor May have drugged that lady and raped her. I personally took the lady to the hospital because she was in coma for two days.

“We have been looking for this pastor for the past three weeks. Later on I used my detectives to trace where he hid and I got him arrested and I am charging him to court now. This is somebody that I arrested since Friday. He has been in cell since Friday, Saturday, Sunday and today Monday, I am charging him to court.”

While noting that the police would ensure full-scale investigations into the matter, ACP Garba acknowledged that, “we have prophets that are good. We have churches that are very good. But I cannot imagine a pastor raping his member inside the church premises.

“And it is this same pastor that’s making allegation that the police are looking for money to release him. He has a right to say whatever he wants to say. But as far as I’m concerned and as far as I remain the Area Commander, this man is going to court and he must be charged to court.”

ACP Garba added that: “We have evidence to prove rape and we have established that this pastor raped that girl.

“We have pictures. We have examined her. I took her to the doctor. He has examined her private parts and we have everything to charge this man to court.”

ACP Garba also denied allegations of collecting money from the suspect to release him or suppress the matter.

He said, “I did not demand a dime from him and I will not collect a dime from him. He must face the wrath of the law.”

However, the suspect, Bishop Elijah denied the allegations leveled against him.

The cleric who spoke with newsmen on his way out of the police station to the court said: “I did not rape her.”

“she came to church on that faithful day on the 20th of May. The mother brought her to the church for deliverance and I prayed for her in front of the altar in the presence of three people. Immediately, after the prayer, she left the church …. She came back 5 ‘o’clock with policemen and the crowd saying this is the man. I did not rape her.”

Narrating her side of the story bebefore newsmen, the victim said she was a member of the church from cradle before she stopped.

She said the suspect saw a vision and asked her mother to bring her for deliverance.

The victim pointed out that the cleric said she (victim) slept with a suspected internet fraudster (Yahoo Boy) and that they cleaned her up with a handkerchief with an intention to use her for ritual.

The victim claimed that the cleric gave her olive oil to insert in her private part just as he also gave her more to drink before asking her to strip naked and lie down on a mat in the church with the sliding windows and doors closed.

“He started f**king me through the back. That was all I could remember. There were sperm all over my body. I shouted. He even said I should come again.

“I want to be the last he will do this to.”

My mother in coma after contracting coronavirus – NBA star

Minnesota Timberwolves centre Karl-Anthony Towns says his mother is hospitalized and in a medically-induced coma after contracting the coronavirus.

Towns talked about the condition of his mother, Jacqueline Cruz, Wednesday on his Instagram page. He urged his followers to take COVID-19 seriously and practice social distancing.

Towns said both his parents went to the hospital recently and were tested for the disease. While his father was released and told to quarantine at home, his mother’s condition deteriorated to the point where she was put on a ventilator and placed in a coma.

“She just wasn’t getting better,” Towns said. “Her fever wasn’t cutting from 103. It’d maybe go down to 101.9 with the meds then immediately spike back up during the night. She was very uncomfortable. Her lungs were getting worse, cough was getting worse. She was deteriorating in front of our eyes.”

Towns said he’s trying to remain positive attitude as his family deals with the situation.

“My mother, she’s the strongest woman I know and I know she’ll beat this,” Towns said. “We’re going to rejoice when she does.”

  • Five students rape ‘sick’ Biology teacher to coma

Five secondary school girls have reportedly raped a Biology teacher to coma at Ayetoro-Itele, a community in Ogun state.

The local police were contacted on Thursday morning when the man’s neighbour broke the news after he found the man helpless and near-lifeless in his room.

According to the man’s neighbour, five girls within the range of 16 and 18 walked into the man’s room, a one-room apartment, where the teacher was recovering from an undisclosed ailment.

The unsuspecting teacher, who was certain they were students as they had notes and textbooks on them, wrongly imagined that they came to pay him a quick recovery visit.

According to the report, in his feeble state, the teacher hasn’t attended classes since recent resumption. The teacher (name withheld) claimed that he was easily overpowered as his co-tenants have all gone for their various trades, except the neighbour that called the police.

Narrating the ordeal, the neighbour said; “I heard voices from his room, although faint because our rooms are far apart. I thought he was merely having some conversation, I also heard moans but who would think that something like that was happening. I found him naked a few minutes after the girls left as I wanted to check on his health and then called on the police”.

The man was immediately rushed to the hospital.

Police confirmed that an investigation has begun to catch the said culprits.

  • I went into coma when Jonathan called to concede defeat in 2015 – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday night said he went temporarily into coma when former President Goodluck Jonathan called to congratulate him on his victory in the 2015 presidential election.

The President stated this when he hosted All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders to a dinner at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He also recounted his experiences in the Nigerian electoral processes and his eventual victory in the 2015 presidential election.

He said: “The PVCs worked well in 2015. That was why when the former President rang me, I went temporarily into a coma. I will never forget the time. It was quartet after 5:00 p.m. and he said he called to congratulate me and that he has conceded defeat. He asked if I heard him and I said yes and I thanked him for his statesmanship.

The truth is after being a deputy governor, a governor, Vice-president and President for six years, and he took that decision is great. He could have caused some problems. He had stayed long enough to cause problems.

He said: “I am the only politician that ended up three times in the Supreme Court and still virtually refused to give up.

There is one thing that disabused my mind in a dispassionate way about ethnicity and religion across the country. You know that tribunal for presidential election started at High Court of Appeal. The President was my classmate. I missed only four of the court sittings.

For that first phase in 2003, we were in court for 30 months. My legal leader was Chief Ahamba (SAN), an Igbo man. He asked the panel of judges to direct INEC to produce the voters register to prove to you that the election was done underground.

When they came to write the judgment, they completely omitted that. Another Igbo man, a Roman Catholic, in the panel of judges wrote a minority report.

I went to the Supreme Court. Who was the Chief Justice? An Hausa Fulani, a Muslim from Zaria. After 27 months, Ahamba presented our case for two hours and 45 minutes. The Chief Justice got up and said they were going on break and when they return the following day, they will deliver the judgment. They went away for three months. That was what made it 30 months.

And when they came back, they discussed my case within 45 minutes. In 2007, who was the Chief Justice? A Muslim from Niger State.

The third one, who was the Chief Justice? My neighbour from Jigawa State. The same religion and the same tribe.

Finally, the determination of our people and technology: the Permanent Voters Cards made it possible for us to be here.

Voters’ education is important. Let people be educated that it is their right to choose leaders of their choice.

There is something that hit me very hard and I am happy I hit it back at somebody. Seven states of the North are only represented in my cabinet by junior ministers, ministers of state. In South East, I got 198,000 votes but I have four substantive ministers and seven junior ministers from there.

You are closer to the people than myself, now that I have been locked up here, don’t allow anybody to talk of ethnicity. It is not true.

I felt I should invite you and eat together and to tell you that as I am sitting here, I am very much aware of the problems in this country and that I will always reflect on the historical antecedents before I arrived here.

I keep telling people that while I was in uniform, quite reckless and young, I got all the ministers and governors, and put them in Kirikiri. I said they were guilty until they could prove their innocence. I was also detained too.

I decided to drop the uniform and come back. Eventually, I am here. So really, I have gone through it over and over again. This is why I am not in a hurry virtually to do anything. I will sit and reflect and continue with my clear conscience.

I thank you for honouring my invitation and I am telling you that if I don’t ring you or call you, it is not because I ever forgot how you supported me at one stage or the other over the years from 2003 till now.”

The APC National Chairman, John Odigie-Oyegun, said “I was very touched by what you said. I hope it is understood in the proper perspective.

It indicates quite clearly that you have listened to what people are saying. It has been such a terrible misrepresentation. You have seized this opportunity to say that you are not what people are saying.

There are so much misconceptions. Look at the example you have given that those who stood by you through the periods of problems and struggles are not people of the same religious persuasion.

You have said it that you are not an ethnic jingoist. I know this because I have known you for a very long time.

For some of us, when these things are said, we find it painful but I hope there will be proper rendition of what you said today and it will start clearing the air.”

  • Groom in coma after N300k wedding savings hangs in MMM’s custody

A soon-to-wed man simply identified as Adakole is currently between life and death after allegedly taking insecticide following the alleged crash of Ponzi scheme, Mavrodi Mondial Moneybox, famously known as MMM.

The incident happened in Otukpo, Benue State, after promoters and participants were thrown into confusion on Tuesday following the news that the ponzi scheme has been frozen.

Reports had it that all confirmed accounts, as at early hours of Monday, were frozen.

Investigations revealed that Adakole, a native of Ai Okpe in Okpokwu LGA whose wedding is slated for December 28 had earlier invested 300 thousand into the scheme last month and was expecting to get his 30 per cent income before his wedding.

An eyewitness told our reporter that when the news broke out Tuesday morning, Adakole, who was introduced into the business literally went mad.

“Kole is my childhood friend, we all grew up in Ugbokolo but when he traveled to Abuja to meet with the pastor of his fiancée, he said someone introduced him into the MMM thing but I and his babe warned him but he told us the scheme was not a scam.

“He invested the 300k he was saving for his wedding into the thing and was expecting to get the 30 per cent before his wedding on 28 of this month.

“This early morning, he called me to check the internet if the story of the alleged crashed of the scheme was true, I told him so I heard and he screamed and hung up.

“When I heard him, I knew it was no longer funny, so I had to rush to his house around Sabon Gari to discover that he had taken Raid insecticide. I had to call the fiancée to inform her.

“I had to take him to the clinic where he is currently battling for his life. The babe is already on her way from Abuja,” he added.

When our reporter contacted the Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, Moses Yamu, he said the incident has not been reported.

“We are yet to receive the report as we speak but I promise to get back to you as soon as I get the report,” he assured.

Meanwhile, the founders have announced that the scheme has not crashed as widely being speculated, adding that it was only in pause mode.

They called on investors not to panic as the scheme would return next year.
