  • How the economic recession affected me- AY declares

Nigerian comedian and entertainment entrepreneur, Ayo Makun better known as AY has revealed how the recession affected his business. The filmmaker made this known in a recent chat with Zain Asher.

AY noted that Nollywood is now attracting investments because investors see the profitmaking potential of the industry.

“People are now beginning to know that you can make money from our movies. Investors are starting to come in and collaborations between different production outfits are beginning.”

On how the recession affected him, he said: “It affected the last movie I did, 10 Days in Suncity, because of the exchange rate. I was shooting in Nigeria and South Africa so the exchange rate was crazy and that affected finance

“Recession or no recession, Nigerians want to like a product and they are ready to go out there and see it – it’s part of the relief for them”.

He also urged aspiring filmmakers to have confidence and cultivate the ability to take risks.

“The secret is not for you to just jump in because you think people are making money. You need to do your research. You also need to have an understanding of finance.

“(As) I have other comedy platforms, maybe the proceeds from doing standup will divert into this new line of business, which is movie making… And I’m a risk taker. I do not ask for any sort of funding.

“I have lost so much (money) from (the piracy of) 30 Days to A Trip to Jamaica. This has also affected the industry – some producers believe that if they spend so much and pirates come, they are going to (have a) huge loss.

“But if they spend less and they make a little money before the thieves come, it will be fine. This is affecting the quality [of the films being made].”

Shola, the rewire, used to be our neighbour here at Ikorodu before he moved to FESTAC after he got married in 2010.He is a specialist in Honda cars and that was why my brother begged him to come and help fix his vehicle. If not for the traffic they encountered along the way, they would have arrived Ikorodu earlier to tow the car with the SUV Shola brought from FESTAC.

“But before they could get to where Paul’s car was parked, they were stopped by some guys on the road. One of the guys who stopped them told the others that he knew my brother and that they should be allowed to go. The others refused and proceeded to searching the vehicle. They saw the chain Shola wanted to use to tow the vehicle and brake oil in the boot of the SUV. Immediately the guys saw these, they started shouting Badoo.

“Even though the other one said he knew my brother well in the area, which another person among them also confirmed, they went ahead to kill the three of them by burning them alive. By the time we got there by 3:00am after receiving a call from somebody who witnessed the scene, it was too late. They had been burnt already,” Elizabeth a younger sibling of the late comedian revealed sobbing.

How an executive producer ran away with my money- Bovi

The talented comedian shares the story of how he started out in the industry serving Richard Mofe Damijo and losing money from his major TV production because his executive producer refused to pay his own share of the money.

He said: ”Fame hit me before I was even ready for it. I had no car, I had no good clothes but I refused to dwell on it. I had no girlfriend, I had nothing. I was the one physically taking the tapes of my soap opera to all the TV stations myself .

“I was seeing friends doing well, but I knew this work had to grow and reach out to people. Those days, I usually take public transportation, I decided to stop taking public transportation once it was 1.45 pm because secondary school would have closed by then and when they see me in the bus, they would start making all sorts of fun about me. After the TV programme had run for 2 years, my executive producer refused to give me my share of the money 7.4m naira, I was entitled to 40%.

“Long story short that was how that project ended. I told her that it was a dream Joseph interpreted that took him to the prison, it was another dream he interpreted that made him a Prime Minister .I started again” he reveals.
